  • This is my independent review for the Lemur Monitors Blue Driver OBD2 Scanner. This is my go-to scanner. If you need to get yourself a scanner, I would seriously consider the BlueDriver because not only can you read and clear the typical check engine light codes, you can also read and clear airbag, transmission, ABS, and other module codes (for Ford, GM, and Chrysler vehicles and now it works on Toyota too!).
    Here is where you can get the BlueDriver: amzn.to/1XNUGfz
    Other Information: www.lemurmonito...
    -The app is easy to use and has a clean interface.
    -Reads and clears the check engine, abs, airbag, transmission, and other module lights
    -Works with Bluetooth Phones and Tablets, Android 4.0+ and iOS 7+
    -View Freeze Frame Data
    -View Mode 6 Data
    -Run an emissions smog check
    -Repair reports help you figure out the most common fix for your problem
    -Live Data can be graphed

      What I've found is that most of these obd dongles. Are useless to a professional tech. But basically most do the same job. Some have more features then others. And some do professional stuff. But require fees to keep using said features overtime or add these too different cars. Like autel and thinkdiag. Kinda disappointing honestly.

    Best thing about Blue Driver (when you have an internet connection) will pull down the top 4 issues of a specific problem.
    You then email the report to yourself or friend and look it over. The report gives you items you may not think would be the problem.
    One item I can't seem to find on Blue Driver is nowhere does it show the battery voltage.

    • @artsmith103
      @artsmith103 5 років тому +1

      If your car doesn't read the voltage to transmit to the device it won't be available. The cheap tool store sells entry level multimeters for under $5. You'll be glad you have it for other things.

    I may honestly consider this. From this review and the other reviews on amazon, I'm thinking this would be a nice tool to have just in case. For less than the price of one weekly trip to the grocery store, this is a nice piece of mind that could save you a trip to the dealer or parts store. Then if you do need to go to the store or dealer, you will be better informed on what they will be telling you and that could save you a ton of money and time.

    • @djscoville
      @djscoville 3 роки тому

      Actually, this is not a bad strategy or “rule of thumb” for the average driver. If you know you need to change your oil winter, spring, summer and fall, you are less likely to forget about changing your oil. I first heard this strategy back in the 1970’s from my auto tech instructor. It’s the strategy he used and I pretty much use it to this day. Of course, I do all my own oil changes and they run me under $20 a pop. And considering my wife and I each drive about 20 - 24k miles a year, it works out about right, mileage-wise. If you only drive 5000 miles a year, then yes, this is overkill.

    You want to tell people that just because you have a scanner and retrieve a code, that doesn't automatically fix the car. The part associated with the code doesn't necessarily fix the car. It could be the wiring, a connection, or possibly a control module (computer). If you do not have a repair manual with a flow chart, you could spend a lot of money on a nonreturnable part, and it not be the problem. The manual gives you the color and location of wires and connectors to check, and also parameters for electrical parts that you may be able to test with a volt meter or diagnostic tool. The live data is a big plus, but if you don't know if the information is correct or not, that doesn't help. I'm just saying that it's not always that simple and people think their getting ripped off at the dealership, when the independent shops labor rates are not too far behind, and they might not have the training or technology to make those repairs. I sat threw a lot of class room time at the GM tech center to just try to learn the basics and then keep up with the ever changing technology. Let's not forget on vehicles made over the past 10 or 15 years, that now when you replace certain parts, they have to be programmed to the vehicle or the vehicle relearned. I have a Launch CRP129 for my own use. It is very impressive with the fact it pretty much covers every vehicle to the year 2015. It depends on what the manufacturer has enabled you to see, usually the newer, the more info. The engine, trans, ABS, SRS, are the general ones, but it doesn't program keys, or pcm's, or do a battery relearn when it's been replaced, or a timing relearn when you change the belt. That's why I have to buy a new one with those capabilities so I don't have to be at someone else's mercy either.

      True, and totally agree. But if you are not savy enough to know that this only points you in the direction of whats acting up or not working. No matter if you get this or get the premier software you still gotta put in work

    • @austingibson3315
      @austingibson3315 5 років тому

      As a professional tech I'd have to agree with ya. Granted I have a CRP123 as a backup scanner somewhere in the back of my toolbox. But it's rather common for someone to throw $$$at their car in parts and then bring it to us for an hour of diagnosis and a quick fix. Some even think we have super computers that tells us what to fix. Ha!

  • @buennyfry5595
    @buennyfry5595 3 роки тому +4

    That was an awesome review, Chris!
    That device has a ton more features than FIXD! I have FIXD, but I'm not too happy with it. My mother-in-law had a check engine light on, I ran a scan and it found no issues. I had an intermittent oil light and FIXD found not issues even when the light was on.
    I don't know if BlueDriver would've found those issues, but I do like the bigger feature set BlueDriver has to offer. One of the other things FIXD could not tell me is that I needed an $1500 front struts and control arm replacement. I really don't fault the device for that since I don't think my 2007 vehicle at the time had sensors to find issues like that, so I imagine both devices couldn't detect that. When my subscription is over with FIXD, I think I'll give BlueDriver a try.

      I took my 99 Mustang to Midas for a complete brake job a few years ago, after returning from Iraq. 4 years later I have uneven pad wear and grooved, damaged rotors. It turns out the guys at Midas did not service the guide pins (very easy process) that the calipers ride on, so the pins seized and prevented the calipers from free floating and thus destroying my brake pad and rotors from one side only. They also failed to instal the flat springs that go on the back of the front brake pads (they’re supposed to come with your new set of pads). *smh - Now I just do the brake job myself, save money and it gets done way better. I also take my time to clean everything well, lubricate, apply anti-seize and torque things properly.

      Well mechanics know that your car is your freedom and independence. So they take advantage of that to better their business. Horrible but true! However, there are crooked people in every profession. To avoid the bad eggs, always look for reviews and do research before you choose a place. And get one of these little devices to help you out!

      I badly experienced it at 2 PURRFECT AUTO SERVICE in Las Vegas. That's why they, gently, send you back to the waiting room, so, later, the manager calls you and gives you the bad news. THESE GUYS INVENT REPARATIONS OR REPLACEMENTS THAT YOUR CAR DOESN'T NEED.

  • @southernoftexas8229
    @southernoftexas8229 5 років тому

    Just keep in mind that the cheap ones only pull Engine codes, they won't pull Transmission codes, Airbag Codes, Anti-Lock Brake codes, etc. Those codes are proprietary to each manufacturer, have to be purchased, and programmed into the App for each individual manufacturer. Torque and the $20 ODBII scanners won't read these codes. Neither will the scanners from Autozone/O'Reilly/Advanced Auto Parts if you bring it in to pull those codes; their scanners are only set up for Engine codes.
    That said, if you only need the Engine Codes and don't care about the other stuff, then the $20 scanners and Torque is a good way to go - but if you need something to pull SRS codes (Airbag/Seat Restraints), then you'd be hard pressed to find a scanner that will display them for less than $100. That's the main thing that sets Bluedriver apart from the inexpensive ones.
    I've got one of the cheap ones (think I paid $10 for it on Amazon) and Torque, and it suits my needs 99% of the time - but recently my SRS light came on, and my mechanic wants $50 just to pull the code (which he'll refund if I get the work done there, of course). So do I pay $50 to the mechanic to pull the code ones, or do I pay $100 on the off chance I need to pull another SRS code in the future? Decisions, decisions. :)

    I just got me one of these handy scanners, partly based on this video. I have a couple of Rangers the same generation as the Mazda in the video. I would recommend that one of the first things you do if you get one...UPDATE the firmware. I ran a test and live data before and after and notice functionality improvements right away. Running the FULL scan for all code went much faster after the update. I was able to watch live fuel trim data to verify the one back had a bad fuel injector. Now I'm anxious to get my VW Bug charged back up and compare this BlueDriver to the VagCom cable (cheap knock off, but works) and VCDS software. Anyware just wanted to get if a Thank You to Chris for this an all his other helpful videos.

      It's pretty nice. It's pretty much just a generic OBD2 scanner. No ABS, airbag or other vehicle computers are supported. I was cheap so I got it so that I could just throw the adapter into my glove box and have it there if really needed. You can read live sensor data though which was my primary reason for getting it.

    Hey Chris!
    LOVE THIS CHANNEL! It really is top drawer!
    I'm thinking to get my hands on a TOPDON ArtLink500B, but wanted to know what you think of 2-in-1 OBD2 and Battery Testers? I've seen a bunch of reviews and lots of people (pros included) seem to say it's the perfect tool for a hobby mechanic (which is what I am). One thing I can't seem to figure out is if it will do DCA tests as well, to try and source a parasitic draw (your explanation for this in other videos is excellent!)
    For a bit of BG, I live in Japan and my daily is a 2021 Toyota Raize (Hybrid 1.2L....I don't think this car is available in N.Amer market) and it doesn't really have any issues, but I like be on top of info, so the mechanics here don't overdo it when trying to upsell me on things I don't need. I am also looking at picking up a used Nissan NV200 1.6L (not 100% sure on what year I'll get, but likely 2010~2015), which I want to convert into a mini-camper and flip after a couple years. I'd like to be able to do my own engine maintenance and check the vehicle with OBD2, when I buy it. Lastly, I also have a 1995 Isuzu Rodeo in Costa Rica, where my family lives. I don't think it has an OBD port, but she's total Frankenstein of a car and has heaps of electrics issues -whenever I'm back, I spend half my time fixing it (while watching your videos to learn how) and the biggest problem at the moment is trying to source a parasitic draw and occasional short somewhere in the system....
    Would love to hear your thoughts on these 2-in-1 machines? Maybe I should get the AL500B for my needs in Japan and then just pick up a regular old multimeter for the BEAST in CR?

    Am using a basic Inova scanner currently. Works just fine but limited in what it will read and a little cumbersome to use (corded device) and the user software (if you decide to download the data) is not particularly helpful. Getting the data directly into an app is a big plus for me. Again, not knocking what I'm using now. For the price it's been great and saved me (and my friends) a bunch of money and it's always worked fine. This blue tooth device just seems a better way and I'm sure it will pay for itself in a hurry...
