I had 2x purchases with the Catalytic converter problems that showed up after driving it 200 miles later. It is shitty situation but in Florida, who cares, just keep reseting it every month or so. And sell it again by resetting it first. We have enough trees in Florida to clear the smoke from cars
HI Scotty I Have a 2009 Suzuki sx4 with 310 000 Km and it still drive and run great but I have this misfire P0303 code and sometimes p0304 . I've already change all spark plugs and coil pack but the error code keep coming back on cold starts most of the times, what could be the issue? (I dont have any power loss) thank you!
Brought a cheap, old scan tool with me when I bought a used car a month ago. No check engine light was on, but I pulled 3 codes. Saved me $500 off the price he was asking.
I wonder when a scan tool will be built into the vehicle. Edit I said I wonder when. I didnt say I thought it was a good idea. The ability to manipulate the consumer is exactly why I wonder about this.
@@fixitallpaul4847 if it was up to the manufacturers (and dealers) you wouldn't be able to scan/fix your own car, and you would have to take it into the dealer. Be thankful that the OBDII requirement is written into law. Although this hasn't stopped manufacturers from putting barriers in place to stop people from fixing their own cars anyway. When the manufacturers are donating millions to fight right to repair legislation you can see what direction they really want to go in.
I have cheap Sears scan tool and it really helps alot! Went to look at a used car and the guy says, No check engine! Plugged in the tool and it lit up like the Apollo 13 computer!
Men like this who have spent their lives learning and dedicated to their craft, and, are willing to share that knowledge are absolute treasures. Thank You Scotty!
I bought a Blue Driver back when you first reviewed it. Last winter my check engine light came on in my Passat TDI and it had a hard time starting, especially in the cold. I plugged in the scanner, it told me it was the glow plugs were bad. I think it even told me which one it was. I ordered the parts and replaced all the glow plugs myself for good measure and it’s started great ever since 😃. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Scotty! I watch all your videos and it’s save me, my family, and friends a lot of headache and lost money.
I wonder how a used auto dealership would react to someone showing up to their lot with a scan tool. If they don't let you plug-in, that would tell you something.
I doubt the dealership would care. They mostly hire anyone and generally may have one decent mechanic and a bunch of parts changers posing as mechanics. Unless it's warrant work the dealer is the last place I would take my car !
Not necessarily, some people might have the cheap testers that can damage the computer! So, I do understand if the car dealership don't allow it. It makes a lot of sense to me!
I was in a shop having my tire replaced and a young man next to me and I got talking. He was trying to resurrect a 1995 car with a bad A/C, I told him he was better off buying a car later than 1995 when they changed over to the new coolant, because the no one is importing Freon any more and it's almost impossible to find anyone able or willing. I told him that a conversion would cost around $2K and an older car probably wasn't worth it unless it was a classic of some kind. I went on to tell him that I had just gone through the used car shopping process after watching a lot of Scotty's advice on inspections, engine and transmission 101's, and scanner tools. He asked the owner how much a conversion would cost. "About $2K." I told him about Scotty and he checked on his phone and seemed quite eager to view the huge list of videos, including the one on scan tools like this one. The manager of the shop overheard me and said, "I've got to stop you there. I can't tell you how many times some guy comes in hear with a home diag from one of those cheap tools, and it's totally wrong." I asked, "You use a professional $5K scanner right?" "Yes, I do." "Of course; you own a shop, and you use it nearly daily, so you can justify it. I just need something to show me any red flags, which my cheap tool did great. I caught a guy who tried clearing his check-engine light, and another who had some weird readings that a test drive confirmed was not accelerating right. I skipped both those vehicles. How much would you charge to check out a car for me if I brought one in here?" "A hundred bucks." "That's reasonable, but I checked out ten cars before I picked one. I couldn't afford to bring them all in here to take advantage of your pro scanner. That tool was well worth it to me." The young man was still busy checking out the list of Scotty's videos like someone who had just discovered a guru.
Lots of dishonest people will disconnect the battery before you go check out the car they are selling . That ( temporarily) clears the check engine light UNTIL the monitors have time to reset them . A scanner will tell you if the Computer Monitors are set or not . Dont buy a car if the monitors are not set or you may have codes show up once they re-set .
That doesn't work on OBD2 vehicles. Codes are stored in NVRAM. Disconnecting the battery won't clear NVRAM. The NV part literally means "non-volatile".... The codes actually have to be cleared and a quality scan tool (such as an OBDLink LX or MX/MX+ with OBDLink software) can tell you how many miles the vehicle has travelled since codes were cleared, or how many times the vehicle has been started since codes were cleared.
@@aaronthomas6155 But it does turn off the check engine light on odb 2 cars . Try it ! I had people do it right before I showed up and then say the battery went dead.
He isnt wrong.. I picked one up at harbor freight, diagnosed all the codes my Camry was throwing, 1 by one I tracked down the problems and fixed them all...Its great that he explains what graphs mean and when the percentages are acceptable... Gotta love this guy.
We bought a scan tool on your advice quite a while back. Fortunately we had it with us when we were traveling with the class C RV on a Sprinter chassis. It kept going into limp mode, reducing our speed to a crawl. It turned out the fuel filter was dirty. Replacing it solved the problem. But if we weren’t able to reset and get out of limp mode it would have sucked.
I too have one for my Sprinter. Mercedes is very picky and I had to buy a very expensive scan tool. The expensive ones are needed for some complex features of the vehicle.
Todd , that's really COOL that you were able to diagnose your RV, when you were on vacation, eliminating down time and having to pay for the high costs of having a mechanic do it!
edgar aragon We still had a mechanic replace it, we were on a trip and we didn’t have the tools far away from home. But if I had to crawl it would’ve taken a long time and I wouldn’t be able to schedule the repair down the road in a shop of my choice. We were stuck on the side of the interstate. Just being able to continue made that little machine worth it’s weight in gold.
I like to think of myself as a experienced mechanic and auto electrican but this dude is up to his eyeballs in knowledge, and he's not one of those egotistical folks like some. good on him..
A system normal drivers don't use but maybe once a year because rain or something bothers you, but those abs, traction, and CEL lights blinking and making noise. All day everyday do not.?
I know this is a year after you posted this, but I’m curious what you mean. I’ve unplugged and plugged in my Autel into my ‘06 Colorado plenty of times in all varieties of ignition status with no issues, and have never heard of this issue before. Same with countless other vehicles and monitors. Only with OBD 1 systems am I aware of issues regarding KOEO/KOER status when using the devices. Is that what you’re referencing, or am I about to learn something new?
@@GetTheFO A lot of sensors have a five-volt reference signal going to them computers can be susceptible to voltage spikes when your pugging, or unplugged a connector to a component whether it be to a sensor, battery, or the data link connector i was always told in my schooling as an automotive technician its just good practice. The same goes for wearing a ground strap when working around printed circuit boards. you might get lucky 20 times its the one time you get a voltage spike that will cause you a lot of unnecessary grief.
Keep cranking these videos out Scotty! It doesn’t matter what the subject is-it’s new to me and I always learn something! You are a treasure of info for diy’ers. Tremendous thanks.
That 20 seconds headlight on is actually a really good simple test of the battery. If you have a borderline dead battery, turning on the headlights without the alternator running drains the battery extremely fast (it's 2 light bulbs draining about 4amps each, nothing else drains that much on the car) and you can see the voltage drop from 13+ down to 12 in a few seconds. If you then try to crank the engine, the battery can already be drained enough that you can barely start the engine, if at all. I know this because I went through this mess. Oh, and to give you credits. The bad battery was also the cause of rough idling and bad acceleration because the spark plugs weren't properly provided with stable voltage since the battery has a buffer function in the overall system and the alternator isn't a reliable stable source of voltage.
@@ert-wert Your point is granted. I missed to point out that it may also just be an issue with weak or bad alternators in conjunction with bad batteries and if the alternator is dimensioned in a such way that it can easily dish out all the energy needed ten it probably won't cause issues. But most people have factory alternators which are much weaker than 220A. The displacement of your engine is rather irrelevant in that topic btw
@@ert-wert it’s about the pulley dimensions and those don’t really scale up that much from smaller to larger engines. The difference between 1l and 3l+ engines is sometimes not even 30% in crankshaft pulley diameter. Alternator pulleys are mostly also the same size. So, 1000 rpm on a larger engine generates not much more rpm on the alternator than a small 1.0l engine.

My Bluedriver arrived today per your recommended tools link. Zeroed in on the service engine alert on my wife’s car within one minute of use. Small fix, $27 part, but she wants a garage to change the part. Next test will be driving the car around and see if anything else trips. Thank you Scotty!
I have a story that fits this video perfectly. My car has 325K miles on it. It's a 1996 Ford Probe SE. It has two catalytic converters. A primary and a secondary. The O2 sensors only monitor the Primary inside the front engine exhaust manifold. Anyway, the secondary converter started rattling and the car was showing a P0421 cat below efficiency code so I had it replaced. The code remained so I figured that the primary converter with 325K miles was going out...it's old. That cost 1000's and that's if you could find a good one. I ignored the code because VA doesn't perform emission testing and drove for years with that code. One day my muffler started getting holes in it so I had it replaced. When I got the car back after the muffler replacement, it had lots more power. I asked to see my old muffler and shook it. All kinds of white chalky dust came out of it. Come to find out, the secondary cat had blown chunks of debris in the muffler restricting the exhaust system and the computer was reading the improper flow through the primary converter as a converter issue. The light has stayed off and the car runs great now. So the converter was never the issue. It was the muffler plumb on the other end that was to blame the whole time.
I need to investigate this one as well. 05 Vue 274,000 miles has been throwing this code. Resetting it and it goes away for a while, but it comes back. Thanks for sharing your experience, greatly appreciated.
It's great Scotty is giving lessons in how to read scan tools. I know a car dealer that has one and can't determine the data shown. He once changed an accelerator pedal when the scan tool showed throttle sensor fault he actually needed to buy a new throttle body.
😂🤣🤣 OMG! This made my morning! The younger generation today! I'm not even an auto mechanic by ANY stretch of the imagination, but even I can generally identify every component under an Engine's hood! I helped a young friend out one day who could not identify ANYTHING under the hood! He knew what the radiator was, that was about it! Geeeezz! They should teach basic auto mechanics in the classroom!
@@mattpaws ok good. I had to change the throttle body on my car because of no acceleration. but there is another problem. 1. the vehicle cannot reverse up a slope only on level road. 2 start vehicle and the idle rev stays high at 1.5. - 2 Until you put it in Drive
After watching this video I was gonna get the Innova 5160rs and got the 5610 instead. No regrets. Works fine. It even helped me with the drive cycle to clear an incomplete monitor that I couldn't clear. I followed the instructions on the scan tool and the light went from blinking red to steady green immediately. I took the car in for a smog check right afterwards and it passed right away. Awesome!
I agree. Had a 2007 Matrix myself. It was amazing. Mine was the red version of his with the tinted windows. Just didn't have the tinted tail lights he has. And oh yeah,I live 30 minutes from Toyota plant where it was manufactured in Cambridge, Ontario. .
I've had a bluetooth tool for a few years now.. has saved me so many headaches and made it so much easier to figure out what is wrong. Everyone should have one!
I bought the Blue Driver and use it often; it works great! Be careful not to lose sight of it however, your friends, family and neighbors will be using regularly as well!
Scotty, that is one tool I’ve been wanting to buy for years. But just haven’t bought one. I’m tired of going to Auto Zone to get my vehicle scanned. I would enjoy having my own scan tool do my own scanning.

Great tutorial, it helped me sort out my vehicle problem. Diagnosed EGR circuit failure. Car went to Limp mode. I noted also way too much oil had been put in during recent service almost 2 pints over. I pumped out excess oil, back to correct dip stick level, and fault now appears to be solved.
I bought one you recommended a while ago, it made me feel safe when I checked and nabbed a Lincoln Towncar 2006 for $7,000 w/ 80K miles. Thank you Scotty!!!
Have one of those things for work. Well, technically, harbor freight Zurich but it is an Innova. Does everything I need for brakes and suspensions and more. Paid $230 with an open box discount for a scanner that Innova sells for around twice the price. Worth every penny. Does most of what my coworkers $3000 Snap-On scanner does. Only downside is that it only goes up to 2018 currently, that I know of, but that is what updates are for. I don't make enough or do enough to justify a multi thousand dollar scan tool.
One of my friends bought an Autel very simple one, I read the instructions and bleed his brakes with it, adjust his head lights and fix a problem with the brake pedal. He got a Buick Enclave, sad part of it he just got it back from GM dealer and they charge him over 300 bucks just for diagnostic.
Yeah dealers cost way to much due to Government Taxes/Fees and Mandates on those businesses. My dad moved to Apple Valley back in the 90's and wanted to get a job. He went to a local mechanic shop with two bays and no cars to be worked on. The owner said he really needed him but couldn't afford him. My dad was confused until the shop owner started listing all the California Laws that ACTUALLY made it financially impossible for him to hire my dad. So may dad said, well rent me the two stalls and I'll open a shop under my own name. The owner laughed and said sure. My dads shop, once word got out, always had cars waiting to be worked on. Dad did complain about the California Tax and Fee laws that made it almost impossible to make money working on cars. He had to live in a little run down shack just to be able to pay the bills. Yep shops and dealers cost a lot. So most of that $300.00 bucks didn't even go to the owner, it went into employee pay checks, benefits and Government Taxes and Fees to keep the shop open. That's why I do my own repairs unless it's a transmission or rear end. If you really want to find out who's ripping off customers go ask a business owner with employees how much of that bill is Government Taxes and Fees. Best Wishes and Blessings. Keith Noneya
@@keithnoneya But you have to pay your employees and pay to license your business. Of course only a small percentage goes to the owner, depending on shop rate and his management abilities. The thought that a business person who can't do things himself but needs employees keeping all of the money is ridiculous.
@@mark4347 I agree you have to pay your employees and pay license fees to open a business in the US. I also agree that a person to open a business to try and make money, and then give all of it to your employees would be ridiculous, unless your running a charity. So we agree, most of that $300.00 bucks didn't go to the business owner, it went into keeping the business open and pay Government taxes and fees. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
@@keithnoneya Your Dad's story is the perfect example of why Toyota, Elon Musk, and a lot of other industries including Mom& Pop style operations are closing shop in California and going to other states and providing jobs to people in those other States!
You notice he's working on an older inline 4 banner.Try working on a newer Dodge V8 or even a lot of the newer 6cyl engines Dodge again where you have to remove the intake to even get to the coils or spark plugs
I bought that same scan tool to work on my vw. I wouldn't have bought it if I know what I know now. It's to late I've got the jetta. Hopefully I can fix it now.
Thanks for explaining how to use some of the scan tool functions and more importantly how to interpret the data. I have an Innova 5210 scan tool and the owner’s manual doesn’t explain too many of the functions, but Scotty fills in the missing information. What a wealth of knowledge!
Newer ones are electronic parking brakes. They can't be deployed in an emergency, or in the snow for fun. They are only motor actuated and just apply the outer pad
@@don2deliver The design has changed over time, but the primary function hasn’t. Even though some could be used that way in some vehicles, I’ve never seen the word “Emergency” used for the name in the owner’s manual or inside a passenger vehicle. It is usually referred to as a Parking Brake, which is the primary function.
@@bobwigg761 - Correct. It's to stop your car from moving on inclines, putting enormous stress on the pawl in the transmission. If that shears, your car is not stopping for anything.
My 1st vehicle a 1999 ford escort zx2 had no abs brakes man that was a learning curve and I drive that for 7 years before the transmission started having issues, that was in 2012 when I got it.
I love Scotty. I never fail to learn something and he is definitely entertaining in his presentation of what is otherwise rather dry material. High schools need more teachers like him to engage the students and keep them interested.
How about a scan tool that can copy/reprogram ECUs, reset Airbag modules and all that...that ISNT subscription based and can stop working whenever the manufacturer wants?
@@roypetersen1400 Still looking myself. I ended up just going with the super duper top of the line Snap-on Zeus. (If it wasnt priced 3/4off I wouldnt have bought it. But, its just an overpriced touch screen computer (ok, I like that it has Windows 7 so I can load it with all of my checklists, but it cant communicate with Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, is only partially compatible with Mopars like the new ones, and is straight up not compatible at all with any 80s cars Whenever I get some cash, I will try the Autel scanners that are bidirectional. They were cheesy and hoaky back then but now, they have established themselves as reliable and decent...even if chinesium. Im already struggling with a car that has all kinds of issues, I cant diagnose. So your comment just reminds me of how frustrating this is, and its on purpose.
Awesome video Scotty, I drive a Volkswagen. Naturally, it has many electronic bits. I left the headlights on with keys in the ignition, wile I was cleaning the interior. I came back to a dead battery. I Jumped the thing and the airbags were disabled. Had a message on the cluster screen. The local Toyota dealership wanted to charge me $100 bucks to reset it. I had to drive 50 miles to reset and test the bloody thing. Luckily Volkswagen did it for free. Still that tool would of saved me a headache.
Good Thursday afternoon to you Scotty, you should be practically if not already back in Tennessee by now. However if you drive your car like you test drive some of these on your videos you may be in the Gulf of Mexico!😲🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🧰🙌👍🍺
I have a graphing OBD2 with specific functions for Porsche on it. It works as a generic OBD2 meaning it works with all cars for the standard things which is great. The Porsche specific stuff allows you to do headlight levels, moon roof, stereo, steering angles, and a bunch of other stuff. It was only 250$ and worth every penny.
The Mechanic Shop i take my Car tool over here in Ireland is a franchise of Bridgestone so Tyre replacement is a Big Part of it's work, but they do all sorts Clutches, Shocks Brake repairs and Suspensions, Laser Tracking Alignment and FREE Diagnostics so they are the Go - To folks for me when the 'Money Light' comes on...you're more than correct Scotty, that firstly the Scan Tools just give a Generic Code to what could be or cold not be a Problem, i was having a Random Miss fire on a Cylinder Younger Mechanic wanted to order up a Coil straight away, but the Older mechanic fired in a new Plug for Free then swapped the Coils around and cleared the Code...Code didn't Follow, he told me to drive it away and ...NO CHARGE... months Later i was getting multiple random Miss fires....turned out a New Code was stored, it was up there as Crank Shaft Position Sensor Number 1...so it was that was the sucker that was the problem going bad over time same was ordered up replaced and no more problems ...again Scotty you are the Man, sometimes you have to take a step back and see which way the wind blows, like yourself and the Battery /Alternator inspection don't Dive straight down a Rabbit Hole ..great Upload....
Thank you for all your videos Scotty everybody in my family knows who you are because everyone has run into car problems and came across your videos hahah Thank you for all you do!
I love you so freaking much Scotty, you're like the wise old Grandfather I never had. I'm having issues with my 2011 328i, at first I thought the transmission was slipping but I realized it's something related to valve timing, most likely VANOS, especially at 84k. That was a relief but I tried going to O'Reilly's today and used this exact scan tool minus the graph option and like you said, I'm in that no man's land where it's not throwing anything significant. That being said, I'm so glad the UA-cam algorithm recommended this video at just the right time. When my personal mechanic comes to check on my car I'm gonna make sure he also runs tests on everything you listed in this video to make sure I don't miss anything or end up fixing what's not broken. What would we do without you Scotty? How do we repay you for your infinite knowledge and wisdom?
Thank you for being there Scotty you make the world 🌍 a better place 👏Bless you for all you share today and every day helping us to understand how things work!🥰🚘💯🇺🇸
I watched a video where someone filmed how you film and its amazing to me you can just pick up on the thought you had continue the sentence not mess up and think what was I saying?
Scotty recommended a cheap scan tool around a year ago. Creeder 3001. I bought it and it works well with the basics. Nice that it does do data streaming so you can monitor temps, etc. I think it was around $40.
Great info there Scotty. As for the "Test the battery and alternator first" def spot on. Way back in the early 60s when I was an apprentice in a university electronics lab (where we built/tested and repaired everything from in-house built to commercial equipment) the first rule of fault finding was: Test the voltage levels: If the power supply is bad then nothing else will be working properly and therefore fault-finding isn't likely to be successful!
I just today purchases the newer version of this. At least I think it’s the newer version it’s the 5210 and it works great. I got it because of this video.
If you are buying you're first scan tool it's wise to look at what the scan tool can do? because a good scan tool will perform tests on more systems in your car. such as ABS and transmission testing. it's a bummer to buy a scan tool that will perform tests on engine management systems. and then have an ABS light come on and find out that the scan tool that you bought doesn't test ABS. and there are so many systems on new cars now such as climate control systems. and tire pressure monitoring and SRS and many more. especially on expensive Luxury cars these days. even if you're on a budget you will ultimately want a scan tool. that will do the most tests and will remain in you're budget.
Scan tools are a must have item! It's been getting bloody cold here in Australia of late, and my car has started having this weird issue in where the automatic headlights are turning off the moment the key is pulled from the ignition. Through using my Bluetooth OBD2 tool and a battery alternator tester I was able to work out that it's the cold mornings putting the hurt on my battery resulting in a low voltage trigger on my BEM in which it disables my auto headlight courtesy timer as the car thinks the battery is bad. The battery is fine however, still reads 640 of 650 cold cranking amps, it's just that my dedicated LPG vehicle doesn't like the really cold mornings...
At Scotty’s recommendation I bought one of those Autel scan tools, and I have to say that it is a pleasure to use and shows me a LOT of information about my cars. I got the cheaper one, so it doesn’t have bi-directional capability which means the annual updates subscription is cheaper. That is one point I don’t recall Scotty making - the more expensive the scan tool, the more expensive the updates to it can be, and can run into many hundreds of dollars annually for those over-$1000 models.
Absolutely awesome! Thank you Scotty. Please, what is that scanner? I discovered your channel around a year ago. I have learned so much! I own 4 BMWs. 1 528 manual and 3 750's. I have owned 11 in the last 30 years. They have been nearly flawless. I'm driving distance from you, if they fix the bridge. I would enjoy you driving my 2020 750! It is incredible.
I bought the entry level Innova a few years back and it's saved me lots of cash. While it doesn't pinpoint precisely like the higher end tools, I've enough experience with older trucks to wade through the junk. It's helped keep my 2000 and 2001 Ram 1500s on the road after 160,000 + miles. Don't go there Scotty.
You got lucky with the Rams, I had an old d100 ,loved it, and I had a 98 ram 1500 sport, short bed, small lift, and flowmasters, I loved it, but ,I got it w 140k and it already had a new tranny in it
@@richsweeney1115 Fixing little problems before they become huge ones is something it's taken me decades to learn. In central Alberta in the country it's pretty tough on vehicles. My attitude is if it moves, it will break.
Great review. These devices are as you say invaluable now. Thanks for your insight, and advice. Some Bluetooth OBD set-ups will now tell you if Eg ABS is fitted or not. I've old school and modern battery and alternator test kit (DIY) that work on most 12/24v systems, but won't work on 6v (motorcycles and disability scooters etc), but they can be a phaff, an OBD device can do the same job, in seconds instead of (if you know what your doing) 10 -30 mins (depending on circumstances and fault). The amount of times, back in the day, when I worked in parts, I'd have customer say to me "I need a new battery", I'd ask them if they were sure, they'd look all puzzled. I'd then go and test the battery and the alternator (the VR) and 8 times out of 10 it was an alternator fault, if it had overcharged the battery (a VR failure) then it would take the battery out too, thus it would kill a new battery too. Whether I sold them a battery or an alternator I always ended up with repeat business because I was honest👍💜😊 I had two friends on house boats, with a VR problem within a year of each other. Their batteries are big (banks of them) and very expensive. With caution they were able to limp back to dock, when I diagnosed the problem remotely, get the VR repaired and thus save their batteries💜👍
Your videos are great, I've been sharing them with all my friends. I've been a mechanic since I was 13. I worked at a gas station (when they were actually full service stations.) I went on to be come an ASE master tech as well as a Gold Level Honda tech. Now that I'm 67 I opened a Lawnmower repair shop. They have computers too. John deere has the most. Cub Cadet riding lawnmowers have a fuel injector where the carb used to be.
Love this channel.. love the attitude and personality of this guy! Any recommendations on a specific scan tool Scotty? I'm a UA-cam mechanic and pretty regularly service my own vehicles and families

hi scotty
I had 2x purchases with the Catalytic converter problems that showed up after driving it 200 miles later. It is shitty situation but in Florida, who cares, just keep reseting it every month or so. And sell it again by resetting it first. We have enough trees in Florida to clear the smoke from cars
Hello Scotty, may I please ask for your recommendation for an OBDI scan tool for a 93 F-250? Thank you.
(I dont have any power loss)

Scan tools on modern cars are mandatory. Otherwise you’re just shooting in the dark. Good luck!
Oh yeah!
I wonder when a scan tool will be built into the vehicle.
Edit I said I wonder when.
I didnt say I thought it was a good idea.
The ability to manipulate the consumer is exactly why I wonder about this.
@@fixitallpaul4847 I'd rather to use standalone scan tools. If it's built in to the car it can be manipulated easier, so eh
@@fixitallpaul4847 if it was up to the manufacturers (and dealers) you wouldn't be able to scan/fix your own

If they don't let you plug-in, that would tell you something.
id also imagine they wouldnt let you test drive a car long enough to get real readings on a scan tool either
I doubt the dealership would care. They mostly hire anyone and generally may have one decent mechanic and a bunch of parts changers posing as mechanics. Unless it's warrant work the dealer is the last place I would take my car !
From my experience the salesman doesn't mind at all.
Not necessarily, some people might have the cheap testers that can damage the computer! So, I do understand if the car dealership don't allow it. It makes a lot of sense to me!
So Scotty which scan tool ruined your and you are mad as hell??
"About $2K."
I told him about Scotty and he checked on his phone and seemed quite eager to view the huge list of videos, including the one on scan tools like this one. The manager of the shop overheard me and said, "I've got to stop you there. I can't tell you how many times some guy comes in hear with a home diag from one of those cheap tools, and it's totally wrong."
I asked, "You use a professional $5K scanner right?"
"Yes, I do."
"Of course; you own a shop, and you use it nearly daily, so you can justify it. I just need something to show me any red flags, which my cheap tool did great. I caught a guy who tried clearing his check-engine light, and another who had some weird readings that a test drive confirmed was not accelerating right. I skipped both those vehicles. How much would you charge to check out a car for me if I brought one in here?"
"A hundred bucks."
"That's reasonable, but I checked out ten cars before I picked one. I couldn't afford to bring them all in here to take advantage of your pro scanner. That tool was well worth it to me."
The young man was still busy checking out the list of Scotty's videos like someone who had just discovered a guru.

I had people do it right before I showed up and then say the battery went dead.

Great story
Cool story bro, big if true.

💯
My 220amp h.o alternator on my 1.8l laughs at the accusation of not being a reliable source of amperage
@@Asto508 smaller engine - smaller belt - smaller alternator??? Thats what I was figuring

This vid is rich with pro info, i really appreciate your depth of passion and knowledge.
Thank you for all your videos Scotty everybody in my family knows who you are because everyone has run into car problems and came across your videos hahah Thank you for all you do!
Scotty, my Tundra loves it when I listen to you on long road trips 😎👍
Scotty Kilmer, the most wisdom gentleman in the mechanic world.
Nice to Know him by his UA-cam videos.
I bought an Innova on Scotty’s recommendation and it is great.
Me too. I just have to teach myself how to use it properly.
2 words for y'all: tu torial.
@@cspruitt3190 funny.
I didn't see the part where it destroyed anything..but it did give you vital info, that you elaborated very well on.
Thank you for being there Scotty you make the world 🌍 a better place 👏Bless you for all you share today and every day helping us to understand how things work!🥰🚘💯🇺🇸
I watched a video where someone filmed how you film and its amazing to me you can just pick up on the thought you had continue the sentence not mess up and think what was I saying?
can u plz link that video, thank u
Love your videos and car tips. From a life time Houstonian, sorry to hear you're no longer in Houston. Keep up the great work Scotty!
like. I need a good scan tool
Scotty recommended a cheap scan tool around a year ago. Creeder 3001. I bought it and it works well with the basics. Nice that it does do data streaming so you can monitor temps, etc. I think it was around $40.
Would it read transmission temp for a VW bug???
Nearly had a heart attack. I just bought one and went on to UA-cam to see how they work. Then Scotty shows up with that video headline....
Scotty you are a good man. I wish you were closer to Oregon so I could get to know ya better. Thanx for all you do!
If you are buying you're first scan tool it's wise to look at what the scan tool can do? because a good scan tool will perform tests on more systems in your car. such as ABS and transmission testing. it's a bummer to buy a scan tool that will perform tests on engine management systems. and then have an ABS light come on and find out that the scan tool that you bought doesn't test ABS. and there are so many systems on new cars now such as climate control systems. and tire pressure monitoring and SRS and many more. especially on expensive Luxury cars these days. even if you're on a budget you will ultimately want a scan tool. that will do the most tests and will remain in you're budget.
sooooo how did the scan tool ruin your car?
shorted out or damaged the computer in some way
It made the car say vroom vroom , instead beep beep
Scotty Kilmer has a lot of knowledge behind his back. Incredibly skilled man!
We get it Scotty, calm down 😂
not gonna happen
Scotty Hall Of Famer.
Doesn't get much better than that.
What's with the heading. Hate it when people do that.
You are correct. I overheard my mechanic complaining about the high cost of these software updates. His scanner updates run into the thousands!
Whew I just bought an innova and I almost thought that was the scan tool that ruined your car. So glad it wasnt!
I love the bird🐦 sounds and cats 🐱 in Scotty’s videos!!🤣🤠☺️
I picked up scanner shortly after taking ownership of my little 328i E90. Has really been an indispensable tool.
Does Scotty know the folk tale about the boy who cried "wolf, wolf" ?
You have to complain ,huh?
Whether I sold them a battery or an alternator I always ended up with repeat business because I was honest👍💜😊
I had two friends on house boats, with a VR problem within a year of each other.
I HAVE TO HAND IT TO YOU, YOU REALLY KNOW HOW TO PRESENT SOMETHING. ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE. I WILL BUY ONE NOW.
