  • I cut open my saggy Beautyrest Black Lydia mattress expecting to need to replace some of the foam layers, but found that removing the cushion tops bottom layer resolved the issue.
Update: Dec 2023. The mattress has been fine until recently when I started having sever lower back pain again. I flipped the top open again (I never bothered to sew it back) and removed the remaining thin foam that I'd left on the back of the top cover. Once again the mattress (and my back) are totally fine. See the updated video here:
    • How I Fixed My Sagging...
The mattress was 2 yrs old when we bought it but supposedly the previous owner only used it 6 months. They'd received it after returning a previous one that wasn't holding up. It is possible for a mattress to slump very quickly. My previous Sealy was sagging within the first month.

Planing to open like that in the video and add something hopefully help me . I did same with my couch and helped a lot . Regular price was 1,500 just mattress but was a special they tell me to pay 1,200 and something…. I expect to last 10 years but only give me 6 years of life

On previous mattresses I'd put a 3/4" piece of plywood between the mattress and the box spring which helped some but the damage is usually in the thin foam that is on the backside of the top cover. In this video, I removed the waffle layer from the back of the cover which worked well until now. I recently removed the remaining thin layer on the back of the cover and again was fine. If you want it a little cushier you can always buy a mattress topper and put in on top or under the top cover. It will work for a while but eventually crush down too. My previous mattress what a low end Sealy and it began to slump within the first month.

Terrible how these companies are using such inferior materials and then charging multiple thousands of dollars for these mattresses. I don’t know what you paid used but I feel sorry for the people you purchased it from. They must have lost a LOT of money on a mattress they had for only 2 years. Shame. Corporate greed at its finest!
I’m glad you were able to solve it and get some good use out of the mattress. Too bad you cut it instead of just pulling the thread to remove the tape that holds the top on.

And they de-volved mattresses so most are no longer flipable so you have to buy them even sooner than before.
No difference between cutting or pulling a thread- you still end up with an open mattress. With a sheet on it, it doesn't matter.

I've seen the video of pulling the thread but didn't have the patience to find it. Doesn't make any difference - once it's open it's open. Only the outer layer was cut, no foam damaged. The previous owner had gone thru several mattresses and supposedly only used this one for 6 months. It had pretty significant slumps. Once i removed most of the padding on the underside of the top cover, it was fine until about a month ago when I started having a lot of pain again. I removed the last of the padding from the back of the cover and it was fine again. It is insane that they can charge more than a few hundred dollars once you see what's inside of the mattress.

I assume you are small at that weight. You'd expect to have less impact but I think maybe that instead of the weight being spread out over a larger area it is more concentrated in one spot that it affects the mattress more. I'm 5'2" and think I make more impact on the mattress than my 5'10" husband.
