  • Perhaps one of the most eagerly anticipated cars of the year. The Discovery 4 was a superb car and a hard act to follow. Whilst looks may divide opinion, the huge weight saving and brilliant engine choice make this latest Disco hard to fault !
    Thanks to Harwoods Group for letting me drive this car straight out of the wrapper. As an ex-Discovery owner I have been waiting a long time to get my hands on Discovery 5...it didn't disappoint.

      Thanks Geof. I actually struggled with this one as I only had the car for less than an hour. Would have loved to spend more time with it but I think I covered the main features.

      Agreed. Come to terms with the styling and what you are left with is a truly great vehicle and definitely a big step up from the Disco 4. The huge weight saving makes the drive feel far more dynamic.

    I thought the review easy to follow and the enthusiasm infectious. It looks a fabulous car. I'm sure LR is aware that it needs to get models into the lower price bracket as existing models go upmarket. As for the looks, I thought it is fine but always reserve final judgement to seeing it in the metal.

    Land Rover - a tow truck driver's dream come true: Walter M, Takes one of these to Death Valley NP, turns down the dirt road to Race Track, uses the hydraulics to raise ground clearance and speeds on his way! Until he happens on a shallow gully cut across the road during last winter's storm. When the low profile tires quickly compress, the diminished suspension travel (from using the hydraulics to raise ground clearance) fully compress and in a mater of milliseconds, two tires and two rimes are destroyed, However, this is only the beginning of Walter's problems as the nearest town that has replacement parts is hundreds of miles away!

    Great review! Although the back does look a bit like a van instead of an SUV, still impressive. I always thought that if I was to get a 4x4 it would have to be a Range Rover (not just for luxury but as it can handle so much more than most from swamps to boulders) but as you point out the difference between LR and RR seems to be closing/blurring. In US the difference between fully loaded Disco and fully loaded RR, with same 3.0L diesel is $20,000 (£16,000), and the RR only seats 5. Is LR getting to be an even better choice than ever before? Nearly a RR but so much less cost? As usual, keep up the great work!

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 років тому +1

      This is as good off road as a RR and the cabin feels very premium. So close :-)

    Hi Peter, This car is mega but it sounds like the engine is working hard when you pull away from a standstill you claim it gets down the road well it looks hard to grasp it sounds under-powered when you consider you have 238Bhp can't remember the torque figure you gave but its a massive car the is no doubt about it but I think it's a great looking car I would enjoy this car but would have the higher powered engine. Kind Regards, Alan B P.S The Vlog is just MEGA

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 років тому

      Hi Alan. The first thing to think about is thanks to aluminium construction this new Disco is nearly 500kg lighter than the old model. The 2.0L engine actually performs really well and it certainly doesn't feel lacking in power. If you were buying this car and were going to spend most of the time driving in town and weren't that concerned about outright performance, the MPG and emissions make it a great engine choice.
      I'd go for the 3.0 Diesel. I've not driven it but I think for me that would be the one to have. I tried to use MEGA a little less in this one !!

  • @larry365

    Its a great vehicle but they really messed up with that rear plate positioning. Trying to keep the style that has been there since the D1 is cool, but it doesn't work with a long plate, it just looks odd.

    Can that control panel in the rear be deactivated? I'd hate to think that luggage shifting around might bump a button or two and try to move seats etc while you're on the move.

      I'm not sure but the button do need a pretty positive push to activate them.

    I'd been looking for a replacement for my 10 year old Discovery 3 for a long time. A D4 was an option but was hoping with the forthcoming D5 that LR would have considered the recent climate change and emissions issues and developed a petrol/electric hybrid, with a decent battery, or a full battery-electric. But no, still into fossil fuels and still promoting diesel! In the end I bought a Tesla model X 90D with no regrets. The D3 and D4 were great but they've had their day. The D5 is a big disappointment in so many ways.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 років тому

      Interesting. I Hybrid will come to LR I'm sure. The engine in the car I drove, the 2.0 Twin Turbo Diesel is way more enviro friendly than D3 and D4. I can't wait to drive the Model X.

      @Oscar Wild Absolutely I have the 2ltr SE SD4 Auto Black edition from new and had two trouble free years 21.000 miles and is a wonderful engine, powerful great mpg i regularly get 40 to the gallon...towing capability is flawless it pulls a two ton twin axle van and you have to keep looking behind to remind yourself its attached. I have a had a lot of top end 4x4s this is streets ahead of those in all areas.

  • @MilesV8

    Good review!
    I like the Disco but I'll NEVER buy the four cylinder diesel, I think that's a huge step backwards for this class (and price) of car. It sounds absolutely horrible and quite tractor like on acceleration. Thankfully there is a 6 cylinder option. I'll also look a the 6 cylinder petrol model as I don't do a huge annual mileage.

    • @ezrapardede1921

    • @MilesV8
      @MilesV8 7 років тому

      I agree up to a point. But the main priority has to be to make engines much cleaner and more efficient. Even bigger ones can be much for efficient and thankfully they are getting there. Having said this, I certainly don't consider a 3 litre V6 to be a big engine.

    • @ezrapardede1921
      @ezrapardede1921 7 років тому

      Sorry to hear you had troubles, but that's not typical. I have had 3 Discovery's and all have been reliable. I did have the odd software glitch early on but my latest 2014 HSE has been a paragon of reliability. I take mine off-road on Fraser Island (Queensland) and they are incredibly capable and comfortable. I don't understand owners who don't take their's off-road; its like owning a Ferrari and never putting your foot down! I also feel sorry for the German "SUV" buyers who look the part but own vehicles incapable of handling anything worse than a dirt road. They are so obviously going for style over substance, and substance is what the Disco has in spadeloads.

    Pressing a button to drop the rear suspension to hook up a trailer is the lazy man's way. Using the trailer's jockey wheel is an intermediate step but real men just pick the trailer hitch up and throw it on the tow ball.

    4:30 now there is a real Land Rover.
    As awesome as this car is, it's sad that Land Rover is just trying to turn it's whole line up into Range Rovers for footballers and rich people.
    I desperately hope that they release a decent replacement for the Defender, that farmers and tradesmen would actually buy, and hopefully the next generation Disco will look less like a Range Rover and more like the Disco 1, 2, 3 and 4.

    These days landrover/rangerover reviews are pretty much the same rhetoric every single time a new product (car) comes out, some of the words you won't miss: Luxurious, most off-road capable, best...etc It's like these reviewers read from the same script, all praise, absolutely no objectivity at all!!!
    To be honest the selling point of this version discovery was the remote access rear sears, apart from that....meh!

    A short story from a(near) 27 year veteran country bus driver. Winter 2008, compacted snow with a layer of treacherous black ice underneath. Myself in a Enviro 200 single decker bus with 40 kids on board(some standing) driving along a fairly narrow lane in East Surrey with my speed down to an average of 10-15 mph(proved by police at the time of incident). Woman in brand new Land Rover Discovery driving on the same lane with her two small(very small) children on board coming towards me at(wait for it) 40-45 mph, national speed limit lane but even so.... She sees me panics that she cannot get past me(she had plenty of room at least three feet on her nearside(once again proved by police at scene of incident), slams on her brakes slides into me head on at a an estimated speed of over thirty five mph!!! Luckily her airbag deployed and as her two small kids were properly secured as well they were unharmed which is more than i can say for her Disco!!! Unluckily for my standing children on board one suffred head injuries(minor), one a fractured wrist and one a similar injury with a few more with severe bruising, hence the police were called and ambulances attended.
    What has this got to do with your review Peter well nothing I guess. I just hate all Land Rover Discovery's as they seem to be driven by people that think they and thier Disco's are indestructable in all weather and at all speeds. It's the old saying "it does not matter what you drive it's how you drive it that matters" or as the thicker people like me would say, "all the gaer NO IDEA!!!!".
    Please when people buy these type of cars why don't they learn A: how big and wide they are. B: They do not stop in icy conditions very much better than anything else, indeed the added weight causes more kinetic energy or if you like "sliding" than your average car.
    Sorry to rant on your channel I hope you can forgive me Peter and I'm sure someone will "have a go" at me in your comments but don't forget I am a profeesional driver and have probably driven more than a million miles in my time as a bus driver, but don't get me wrong I'm not saying I'm a brilliant driver because I have made some monumental cock ups in my time(none with any injuries incurred though), I JUST HATE LAND ROVER DISCOVERIES!!!! Great video though. NEXT.
