    Doctor - you need the “Metropolitan” discovery, just a nice step up from the Hse and the Hse lux. I drive a lot of JLR products in my work and own a RRS supercharged V8, the V8 is the best engine I’ve ever had but is impractical for me and so my next car is the D300! You are so spot on with your analysis 100%, D350 is good but you’d ask why as the D300 does the job just as well. Keep the faith!!

  • @Discovery_Dad
    @Discovery_Dad Рік тому +21

    The D300 is a cracking engine. Love it. Nice noise for a diesel and great mpg for such a big car. Down to south of France managed over 35mpg on autoroutes. 40mpg is not unachievable. Done 6000 miles in one now. Very impressive.

    Great video - many thanks. I have owned a D300 R-Dynamic Velar since April 2023 and it is a great car. We drove to Croatia and back this summer, 3,000 miles over 2 weeks and it didn't miss a beat. 35mpg on the twisty roads and over 40mpg on the motorway, although the autobahns were very tempting and at 100mph you certainly don't get anywhere near that! However, since returning, we have had a compressor failure in the suspension unit and it was with JLR (Virtu, Yeovil) for 2 weeks and off the road for 3 weeks prior to that as I tried to find a dealer with the capacity to do the work. All fixed now, but big note to anyone buying one; go for the JLR warranty!!!

    Aussie here. On my second Disco 5. Previously one was the V6 diesel. My new one is the D300. It's a bloody cracking motor. Buttery smooth, reasonably quick off the line, sips fuel like it's trying to lose weight and makes great torque. By most accounts it appears to be a lot more reliable than the old donk too. About to buy my third one soon with the upgraded power. Just on the 2 litre, issues on that thing have been so bad over here that there are Facebook groups dedicated to 2L engine failures.
    My opinion on what the causes of issues are twofold :
    1: Small displacement and high pressure turbos. LR are trying to push far too much power out of far too small a motor., stressing the components to the max, particularly under load (EG: Towing a heavy caravan. So many engine failures over here related to towing). If you compare, say, the 4 Cylinder in the Toyota Prado, that diesel donk is a 2.8L with lower boost and has proven far more reliable over a long period of time. The Japanese tend to favour lower power outputs and higher displacement because most owners want their cars to last longer than the average European buyer.
    2: Service intervals that are too far stretched. The computer in my car says I don't need to change the oil for 37,000kms (23,000 miles). Come on!! There is NO WAY any oil is going to last that long without breaking down or smudging up...or both. And we know why LR stretch these intervals. It's pure marketing. Less time spent at the dealer getting your car serviced = convenience for the customer. A great selling point.
    So long as the car lasts the warranty period why should LR care? Judging by the way they are handling claims on engines here THEY DON'T. They're literally conditioning the buyer to move out of their cars sooner to buy a new one with a fresh new warranty. The whole thing is a scam,. Needless to say, if you're after reliability there is no replacement for displacement. But maybe one day LR could do something about the two big issues that continuously plague their cars: Defecation and Depreciation. Take care of the former and the latter will take care of itself. Just my .02pence worth. Cheers

    Had a 2017 First Edition Discovery with the older 3.0 engine and it never missed a beat, solid engine and covered over 100k miles in 4 years. Now changed to 2022 Metropolitan with the D300 and again it is spot on. Effortless performance, and economy around 38mpg, that’s with towing and a heavy right foot. Had a loan 2.0 for a couple of days last year and it was awful, gutless and slow. Such an underpowered and highly strung engine for such a large car.

    I had two, trouble free Discovery 4 vehicles - 180,000 miles between them. Bought a ‘5’ with the 2 litre engine next. The 2 litre Ingenium engine is a disaster. Under powered and not as fuel efficient as it should be. Mine failed at 56,000 miles - JLR quoted £15 - 20,000 for a new engine. Bought a BMW.

I have been unable to find a video that talks about the 3.0 reliability and this video does nothing on that front other than saying I have not heard much about them. As far as my research can find out the 3.0 is just a bigger version of the 2.0 so basically the same engine.

    After three discoveries and a Range Rover sport, I can honestly say the newer they got the worse they became. In keeping with the trend; the service levels and customer service from JLR has followed suit and has become equally shocking and extremely poor, on every level.
