Land Rover Discovery 2017 (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Land Rover Discovery is, depending on the definition, in its 3rd or 5th generation. Land Rover Discovery Series 1 and 2 could be considered two generations, because of how long they were in production, Discovery 3 and 4 or LR3 and LR4, as they were known Stateside, were pretty much a pre face lift and post facelift cars. The 2017 Land Rover Discovery has a whiff of Range Rover about it. With 292 cm wheelbase and almost 5 metres overall length Land Rover Discovery is the size of Range Rover Vogue. Anyway, Discover is made on the same Range Rover platform. Originally Discovery was always supposed to be the cheaper Range Rover.

    This is easily the nicest vehicle in Europe for towing horses or boats and having several passengers. A brilliant car.

    I love how this new one looks as I love how the Discovery 4 looks. It looks like it blends in with all the other models but still distinctive enough so it's not a clone. I guess I just don't have as much problem with change.

    They have two different headrests. One is thinner and has a much better position. The thicker one definitely a little too forward and needs to have the ability to slide rearward like on the Porsche Macan and Cayenne.

    Looks you were not blacklisted by JLR after some panning comments on the Velar kudos!

    I think this is a fantastic modern vehicle. The only thing i dont like is that the rear windows do not close all the way down.

    a bit too pricey for what it is, I remember when the DISCO was round 40k... As for the headrests, I don't understand why more manufacturers don't incorporate VW style adjustable headrests, they are on the Passat for reference and so simple, yet very few cars have headrests that adjust laterally. If they are on a Passat, they should be on a DISCO.

      It certainly is expensive but considering its ability and in comparison to rivals, specified sensibly with the four cylinder 240hp 500Nm diesel engine in HSE trim with some sensible extras, its around £50,000UK. It can easily be bought with less spec and cost than that though. It has a two speed transfer box and 3.5 ton towing capacity and good off-road and wading ability which will by appreciated by people who need this kind of thing. Those that don't need it can buy a Discovery Sport for less cost or a Velar of F-pace from the same company.
      Yes, it is actually the third generation, despite being called the Discovery5. The arse is the worst aspect of the car. It just doesn't work for most people, looking lopsided and overly tall in proportion.Personally I don't like the C pillars and 'floating roof' at the back which reminds me of the 1998 model Mercedes ML. Its too much of a cliche and both it and the shape of the side lights can also be seen in the remarkably similar 2017 Ford Explorer, which incidentally isn't sold in the UK. I did see and take a picture of one in Russia a couple of weeks ago though.

      true, but who truly needs those capabilities, especially on the school run? ;)

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 7 років тому

      This may not be the ideal model for the school run. The Discovery Sport also comes with seven seats. In your location the capability of this type of vehicle may not be needed but in rural areas and for certain businesses its assets may be regularly used. Lots of businesses tow up to 3.5 tons and fit these with tachographs. Lots of farmers use them for work and play. Hard.

      Most Disco owners use them for more than the school run I can assure you. Visit Fraser Island or many of the State Forest trails and you'll see Discos everywhere.

    Just paint that thing yellow or orange and use it as a school bus...holy big, batman! Nice review Marek! I think the Land Rover discovery sport would be a better option if it didn't have an old 4 cylinder design powering it.

    • @meganpitcher9774
      @meganpitcher9774 6 років тому +2

      Old 4 cylinder design? The Ingenium 4's are absolutely state-of-the-art in modular engine technology with some of the highest power outputs in their class and excellent fuel economy. I think you're remembering the early days before Ingenium when LR were stuck with Ford engines.

    • @kevinn1158
      @kevinn1158 6 років тому

      over here in Canada, they are still using the old 4 cylinder engine. Maybe this year it changes over. I might go check out the F pace with the new ingenium engine.

    • @meganpitcher9774
      @meganpitcher9774 6 років тому

      You're thinking of the Discovery Sport which was initially released with Ford carry-over engines, but has now been updated with the Ingenium engines. The full-size Discovery has Ingenium 4 cylinder diesel engines from the outset, but not in America where they only come with V6's due to American's preference for bigger engines. The big jump will come when the V6's switch to Ingenium designs and you'll see upwards of 250kW from the diesel, and 350kW for the petrol. As for the F-Pace, its by far the best looking mid-size SUV on the market and a great choice if you don't need 7 seats or serious off-road capability. Check out its cousin, the Range Rover Velar whilst you're at it.

    • @kevinn1158
      @kevinn1158 6 років тому

      Yes, I was thinking of the Discovery sport. They've been updated here in NA? I thought they would give this bus the ingenious 4 cylinder petrol here in NA as well.

    What's logic behind the NFC bracelet with the key still inside the car ?! seems to be a pretty stupid idea ...

    • @ytdood
      @ytdood 7 років тому +1

      The idea is that you can go hiking / swimming without having to take your key with you. It's an interesting one, though I'm not sure how many people really need it.

    • @meganpitcher9774
      @meganpitcher9774 6 років тому +3

      The key won't work once the car has been locked with the Activity Bracelet unless the car is also opened with the Activity Bracelet, so people can't break into the car and use the key to drive off.
