Land Rover Discovery 2018 SUV in-depth review | Mat Watson Reviews

- Your eyes do not deceive you, it may look like an enlarged Discovery Sport but in fact, this is the all new Land Rover Discovery. This all new designed SUV features an updated interior, complete with wooden finish more reminiscent of Range Rover than Land Rover. However, has Land Rover managed to borrow from its cousin to compete with rivals such as the Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE and Volvo XC90? Has it finally married luxury and practicality, that can compete in the rush of the school run, and navigate treacherous off road obstacles? Well never fear, my review covers both topics, minus the children as I show you exactly what this new Land Rover Discovery has to offer, in this in-depth video review.

At first I didn’t quite like the back but now, it seems I appreciate it by having a unique look that not all cars have.
same for me, i like it now, subtil and modern
I just borrowed one, I took three children my wife and dog down to Cornwall and back in total 800 miles covered in 4 days, absolute comfort, 40mpg, not a moan from kids with entertainment and sitting high enough to avoid motion sickness, it's not as sporty as my X5 but for family and outdoor activities I can't begin to recommend this enough....fantastic
Alan Wayte .. Not nice though driving the ugliest 4x4 made today
george I wouldny go to that extent. IMO its not so bad. but not amazing either
@@sweetfreedomGBSurely that honour belongs to the G-Wagon 😂
The rear seat electrical buttons assembly looked really flimsy. The plastic moved a lot when he pressed the buttons.
I noticed that too, the panel seemed to pop in and out.
Gert Preproduction car
Cheap and nasty
nic louw plastics are the worst it can easily get scratched by something all cars are all like that
because they're mounted to the boot liner.... who cares anyway?
what did they think when they made the back?
whats up with gods holding their right hands up? when on there lunch break halfway through designing it
Young, rich and MGTOW a donkeys ass

Who knows, but Gerry is increasingly seen as 'Land Rover history'. We're all wrong, you see, seemingly, the rear is new and innovative Everyone will be copying it... :0)
I hate the exterior especially the back but I love the interior
Jeez, how flimsy is the switch panel in the boot!!
that really bothered me as well
British build quality :D
MrSpencely It could also be a result of rough use by auto journalists. As one fully loaded car is used by multiple reviewers, it could've gotten loose by some over enthusiastic journalist fiddling with it before Carwow got a hold of it. Otherwise Matt would've mentioned it as iffy plastic bits and flimsy plastic joints have been pointed out by Matt in several videos.
If that is the case then it is still shoddy build quality if it can't withstand a few rough journalists after just a few weeks. What will it be like after a few years of family use...
I was gunna say the same thing, im not impressed with this new disco. Looks like a range rover but not as well finished... I dont get the design strategy of lr with the changes
1:19 The steering column LOL
A great review, I like your honesty. Some good detail. Keep up the good work
Congrats Mat, I've enjoyed Matt Prior and Sean Carson's reviews of the new Disco, but after watching your review I now feel as though we've actually spent some real practical time with this thing, so big thanks!
I can't believe just how much ill-informed drivel has been published since last year about the 2017 Disco by obviously under-prepared or confused so-called motor writers, but you've got it down big time, thank feck.
It'll be available in July here in Australia, and might just replace the old Kombi in our family, unless the 700nm RR Sport temps me away.. And yes, we'll be needing those off-road chops around our home here in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
Thanks again, great work.
Bring it on.
Absolutely loved the Top Gear reference. Spot on. 😁😁
Keep up the good work Mat!
love the reviews.
Very good video, with a lot of information! Thank´s a lot!
Its a brilliant SUV, very practical and useful but that back end is just downright hideous. Whoever thought of that offset number plate was high af. I would go and buy the XC90. Just as practical but miles better looking.
Looks tragic to be honest...
It's an awesome back I love it wats wrong with it
And cheaper
the volvo is so ugly
The back end is due to design heritage.
The XC90 has nothing over a Discovery. Volvo is road only. Discovery is all terrain.
Advice to Land Rover :
Replace the back with the old one & Increase the height of the rear seat .
This will make a perfect Discovery .
There, you have it . Saved you millions of $$$$ in market research and R&D .
Looking into upgrading our discovery sport for this discovery as we have three boys. Great review, thank you!
Love your show, big fan. 1 thing missing. You should show all cars start their engine with the ignition like you do on the Porches
Owning a JLR vehicle these days is a great experience these days. The after sales is great, the service, the dealers, and heck even the reliability, touch wood, having owned one, is great. Now I don't completely do that car justice, but heavy green laning, highway drives and city drives alike have been a breeze!
As far as this particular series is concerned, I'm neither a fan of the way this looks, nor the Velar to be honest, though the velar has phenomenal interiors, I prefer the classic, bigger and boxier nature of the classic range rover personally, but what a brilliant family car this New Discovery would make! Heck, even the discovery sport, is a great buy I feel.
Great review as always, thx for all your great content !
What is with the button panel quality?
many of the panels move like they are on a last second stretch to braking off?
Man i just like ur reviews.. never boring🙂👏🏻👏🏻🌼
Jeremy, James and Richard, were just soo good
Did Matt say the cheap plastic on the interior was not so bad??????? On other cars he complains so so much!
Frimpong Poku-Dankwa yea i wondered too
Frimpong Poku-Dankwa yeah plastics looks horrible imo for the price of this car...
@Jumbomuffin13 you are absolutely right
British bias
Because there isn't lots of cheap plastic
Too many incidents of crankshafts breaking and engine blocks cracking. Basic, basic failures, but people are more concerned about all the stereo, heated cup holders.
It looks better on the road than in pictures or online reviews. Saw one today. Looked quite smart.
Great Video Review of one the best SUV's on sale
Boy... 17 seconds... really !?
laughed in that....
Phillip Pearl I’ll be honest, I love Land Rover, but my first phone which was a base model Sony Xperia booted faster then that.
I call head 2 head between this, the Q7 and the XC90
Looks more like Q5/XC60 competitor to me.
z00h maybe...
Why? It's 3 models down from the biggest model they offer.
no way lmao
X5 all the way!!
You're the best car reviewer in the whole UA-cam. Thank you!
That’s surprisingly easy to get the ISA fix covers it’s a flip down pedal it’s surprisingly practical
The intro was epiiic hahaha loll! !!
My wife is driving a Discovery 2017 around while our D3 HSE is having the front diff replaced (yeah, gulp). She hates it. Our dog is getting on a bit and as the rear seats do not fold down and then up, she cannot climb up :( We miss the rear split tail gate when horse riding, the front piller is way too raked back and you have to nearly break your neck to get in. It's just no way near as practical as the D3. She keep on at me as to when we get ours back. Oh and that startup time just to get the radio on is a pain in the ass. Oh and the Bluetooth audio loses its connection every 30 seconds and reverts back to the radio. Ho Hum.
Brilliant review as always Matt and team :)
This is a great review.
I used to have a V8 LR4 (Discovery 4). I would love this new one is a Diesel. Have to wait a few years to pick one up on the 2nd hand market.
From some angles it's not bad but from others it looks like the designers lost the will to live
its not totally bad, but not too good. its well...meh
Lol.. that is funny 😁😁😁😁
You are right😁😁😁
It’s the back end
EXACTLY!!!
it's all very lovely but it feels like the Discovery has become too Range Rover...
I know, i like many sunroof views from the old one
Agreed, I doesn't have that 'mean' look of the old one
Ahahaha, I just love Mat. Turning on the infotainment system is so hilarious.
I was really impressed with it when I saw the pictures....and then I sat in one...the seconds row has the most uncomfortable seats of any luxury SUV....with the XC90 being the best followed by the Q70...its just that there is not enough cushioning in the bottom and the seat is too low so your feet are raised far too high...
We need a mega test of this vs Q7 vs XC90 vs GLS
Outside, this looks like a bigger version of SsangYong XLV. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad, but it still have the same type of shape...
Thank you for the review. So Q7 or Discovery 5?
Good review Mat, thanks.
Extremely thought out interior. Exterior... well... You don't really notice it when you are behind the steering wheel.
that shape has helped shave almost 2 litres per 100 kms off the fuel bill - I like it!
MrVoayer mmlm
Only one man could be a perfect replacement for the original Top Gear cast, and that man would be you Mr. Watson. Keep up the great work.
Brilliant reviews as ever!
can you review the Maserati Quattroporte please? I love your work!
5:19 that panel looks like it will fall out on the first pothole
Overall it's great the front is amazing but the back is so ugly
Vlogs Blogs because they made the back gone worse land rover is getting a bit too far :(
Vlogs Blogs I love it
I like the back
Oh my god me and my friend Bonnie have been waiting for this for a long time also loved the pun "discovery channel" for the discovery
What a great review , well done
I have a Land Rover discovery sport 2019 so comfortable
My discovery sport panoramic roof leaked. My dealer wasnt interested in fixing it, even under warranty, I discovered there was a known JLR recall for this, roof panels wasnt fitted properly, but my dealer did not entertain me. I got rid and went to Mercedes. Still love LR but not the customer care.
Amazing how Jaguar and Landover have come on. brilliant design and engineering
Get a life brit,, if u wanna see proper car just look for german brands, not problematic british cars
I saw a vellar hse in Perth today... it amazed me😜
I LOVE the part where you show how it is to fit 3 in the back!! Those three unknowns were a nice change! (sorry mat hahah) it was just a nice surprise, and the smile on the blonde lady's face YOU GO GIRL!!
the back looks so fcking awful, holy sht.
just because the unusual positioning of the numb. plate??
Its the car equivalent of an overbred bulldog.
isur u sir .. No not just the asymmetrical rear tailgate but also the overall gawkyness, the total lack of design foresight or proportion and the bulbousness of the rear aft- axle area.
They said that about the pervious model but it sold shed loads
Alan Akeister ikr?
Those buttons in the trunk are flimsy af
Arven Tahtyan because they are plastics af you know all cars all have that its a shame that it can reduces happiness for customers to buy them
Pleasant video to watch. Well done
The weather on the day of the shoot was just perfect for this car.
Mat "whereas this one is built like a normal car"
Me: gee I'd hope so
Am I the only one who likes the way the rear looks?
Billy Johnson I like it!
Billy Johnson I like the rear part as well
So funny I like it and we actually have the same exact first and last name.
If that jeep got rear ended heavily it might actually improve the look of it.
I have 2 kids and a wife. So I just bought that car in white HSE 2018 and its amazing. Lots of space and looks good
Where did you go for the "off-road" test? Love it
What happened with the exterior, god it's hideous.
Gotta check your eyes checked bro.
kraenk12 gotta get a dictionary bro
Tomek Tabaka front is OK, but the back is UGHHHH
i checked on google what hideous means
Tomek Tabaka I love it
That non symmetrical back is ugly
Wiktor Kawala
Ikr!!!! I miss the old square Jawed defender. This I am afraid is meant to be more of a "style" or "status" symbol -.-
Wiktor Kawala Betty Boo front; Betty Boothroyd back
Wiktor Kawala the last one was non symmetrical
people like you get bothered somuch with that asymmetrical tail making its ugly, even though the overall looking of the car's good
Say what you want but the exterior isn't pretty. The sport looks nice, but the back just looks totally out of shape it ruins this car.
This has to be the leader on practicality and particularly storage, great stuff.
Hey mat can you please do a review on the all new BMW alpino b7 bcz I have been waiting for it so long........all your reviews and vedios are cool, so expecting a Same kind of vedio on alpino b7. thanks for entertaining us.
Discovery channel... :D I see what you did there :D
Reliability is the big question with L-R
hey, can you do a review video on the vogue autobiography lwb??? pretty hard to find one
😄 nice presentation man.. keep it up 👍🏼
If you fold all the seats down could you fit a matress in it to sleep on?
VEOTech you can in the back of the old laguna. We put a double airbed in the back of our 2005 model, while driving through France about 8 years years ago.
You can do that in cars a lot shorter than this, so yes absolutely
11:36 - check engine light is on! It's a sign!
The check engine light is on in the accessory position. Just about every car does that
Yeah, was waiting for this one!
Well a lot people complain about the looks and I guess I can understand... but this to me is a very good lucking and certainly one of the most iconic vehicles out there. Charisma, gents...Charisma!
Some facts that no-one in these car reviews EVER mention.
Compared to the previous model.
1) The load space is a lot SMALLER. With all seats folded it is 2400litres vs 2550 for the old model. This is because the floor to ceiling measures 10cm less; You could get a bike upright in the old one if you took off the front wheel; You CANT in this 2) The old one has five full size comfortable seats in rows 2 and 3 with good access to row 3. In order to be able to fold the seats flat with electric motors they have ruined the comfort. The seats are very thinly padded and set way too low so that for a 1m80 adult your knees are up by your ears and to give the illusion of leg room the seat squabs are 5cm shorter in the new model. They are NOT ADULT SEATS and terribly uncomfortable. They are suitable only for children 3) Access to row 3 is terrible compared to the old model 4) the middle seat on row 2 is not a proper seat unlike in the old model; It is as hard as a plank of wood and only suitable for short journeys. Comfort has been sacrificed to make it into a fold down armrest.
I regularly travel long distances with 5 or more adults in perfect comfort in my Disco 4. You couldn't in this car. It is designed and priced for wealthy people who live in urban environments who want to take the kids to school. Needless to say i won't be buying one.
The back end is also plug ugly btw
REPLY
Those are probably the lowest rear seats I've seen in a car/SUV! Huge design flaw!
Love ur videos!!
Did anyone else catch that the radio was tuned to Bad and Boujee? Love it 😁😁
Front is okay
Side is okay
But the back...
MannBrothersFilms the back that land rover made it very worse and it makes them getting too far for them D:
This is one of the best SUVs on sale.
Zach Smith When you start this car up in the morning you never know what warning lights are going to stay on
Failed sale in Australia
This comment didn’t age well…
Nice review Matt 👌great practical family wagon and highly capable too. Shame JLR didn’t listen to user feedback groups and centralise the number plates. Need to go to URBAN to get their version is far more appealing to everyone’s OCD
Great review Mat :)
You wanna go off-road, get a Land Rover Discovery/Range Rover.
You wanna come back, get a Toyota LandCruiser/Nissan Patrol.
Max Troy That used to be true, not anymore.
Bartinater ! Wrong. Still fact to him that toyotas and nissan will bring you back. This one is horrid looks likr a giany crossover unfit for offroad
99.999999%:The rear is ugly as hell
Me:one of my favourite parts about the car is the rear
Ik I'm going to receive hate comments
Many ppl thought a same. Ugly back ! The designer who design the back is totally an insane and fake discovery lover !
matt, please review the cars with a bright coloured interior, feels good to the eye and reveals more detail. I really hope you consider this advise. it'll make your already good videos even better.
Thumbs up for Top gear reference 😂
Great video as always though!
Umm interior materials are lacking for the price of this car. Lower door panels. Lower dash and glove box, and side center console are all made or hard plastics. That you'll never find inside a BMW X5. Very disappointed in this.
Jorge Gonzalez oh yeah plastics (not cheap ones) by your shins, where you will never touch! Oh and do not bring the BMW X5’s outdated interior into this please!
Jorge Gonzalez btw my friend has a BMW X5, was disappointed with the rear seat door panels!
Nice car, just a bit worried about the reliability and the poor fuel economy
Just picked mine up and part ex a disco 4 lux and this is much much better well done land rover
Good reviewExpect a head to head of GLS, Q7, XC90 and DISCOVERY
man they look so nice but u read horror stories consumer reviews and get disheartened :/
Great review again !!
greenviper46 Wouldn't get disheartened. I e had three of these of one sort or another and they've never been in the shop for anything other than servicing. My mate's X5 on the other hand.......
Ha Ha Ha! nice reference their about Top Gear Matt.
wow, really awesome discovery.. tq bro.
In 4:50 and 5:03 every time he presses the buttons it looks like the buttons frame is going to fall apart. It seems like Land Rover didn't give much attention to tighten the screws...
Brilliant design. Poor manufacture. Just pray you don’t get a Friday afternoon one.
I don't like it , I prefer the older design
Ibrahim shehab i know! Land Rover is getting way too far :((
People moan about the new exterior vs the old one. I think in todays world the older one with the boxy features resembles an ambulance not an SUV. And the new outlook is brilliant, especially the the overhanging back. To me It is the most beautiful car on the roads today.
After watching this, I love my Disco 4 even more.
So basically, germans are still better, this thing fully loaded is as priced as the audi SQ7 which has a 435 HP V8 4.0 tri turbo diesel which has earth moving torque
You can always thank the British pound sterling for that, because of its retarded high vallue everything produced and exported out of britain will be triple as expensive compared to the rest of europe, dont even bother with biritsh cars since servicing and spare parts will obiusly be more expensive than its rivals. So to summorise the purchase and upkeep of british products will contantly be a drain on resources, you are better off buying german, french or japanese luxury suv's with even more kit and options for the same price of a british one.
A heavy V8 with lots of torque, in a SUV that can't do anything substantial off road. And are those V8 diesel emissions correct?
carbiify bro don't talk like you don't know, these SUV are almost never driven off road, and you cant argue that the SQ7 is better in every way you can think of other than off road, better drivetrains, more comfy, more refined, more luxurios. Basically the Q7 is a much better product for the money, not to mention the SQ7 which can pull an airbus a380
Almost? That's not the point. If I spend huge amounts on an SUV, I would like know it can go off road. Better drivetrains? Audi longitude mount their engines forward of the front axle, making their cars nose heavy and prone to understeer. VW/AUDI DSG gearboxes are well known for failing. More comfy? Can you prove this? Platforms? JLR's aluminum platforms, are very advanced. The only area where Audi are better, is build quality and ergonomics. BTW, I'm not your bro.
carbiify come on, the Q7 has enough off road abilities for EVERYONE, for drivetrains in a SUV who cares where the engine is mounted? Audi diesel engines are known to be the smoothest and the quietest in the business and they are very economical, for gearboxes the SQ7/Q7 has a ZF 8 speed gearbox which is one of the transmissions out there, for quality AUDI are the leaders in the industry and you can not argue with that, for comfort the Q7 with air suspension according to matt is ULTRA comfortable, and its the most insulated for the outside in its class, the only 2 things the disco is better is that it has better 3rd row and better off road abilities but the for the 3rd row the Q7 has enough space.... Just don't argue that the disco is a better SUV compared to the Q7 ESPECIALLY the SQ7, germans are way ahead of british cars.
I like the old shape - new is hideous
marco168888 The more I see this the more I know I could never buy anything from LR, even if I had the money !
Hi Matt - perhaps you could post an update on the rear seat switch panel; has LandRover fixed this flimsy fitting?
I can see design of Safari Storme on the back C pillar which Tata adapts on LR discovery design .. i guess
