Glen Page Thanks Glen! Please feel free to check out Lexington Lab band playing Foreplay/ Longtime. I am the one playing the blue Paul Reed Smith. And stay tuned for a Hitch a Ride coming up soon.
Thanks! I've been messing around with this solo since I was a kid right after the album came out, but finally decided to sit down and learn it "correctly" a few weeks before I shot this video. It's not spot on, but close enough. Tips would be to make all your bends precise and pay attention to your vibrato as well. Both will help you capture the essence of this solo. Lastly try to keep it clean by only letting the notes you want to ring out. Hope that helped a little, and thanks again!
That was incredible! ❤When I was a kid maybe 14, we used this solo as a kind of soundtrack for our home movie, called "Bigfoot Must Die!" That was before home movies had sound -A long long time ago!!!❤ Great job!🎉
Scott Gregory To this day I’m still blown away at the amazing talent and genius of Tom Scholz. Hard to wrap my head around that the first Boston album was done mostly by him in a basement.
+McFly Hey McFly...If I'm not mistaken, I think Barry actually came up with the basic structure of the solo. And like most Boston "solos" there are usually harmonies involved. I'm sure Tom added his magic touch somewhere in the process.
ya there is an early version of Barry doing this solo on the internet somewhere. Apparently a decent amount of the original Boston solos were re-worked from barry's original versions.
This is one of my top 3 guitar solos of all time - (hendrix all along the watchtower and the knack my sharona are the other two - yes I'm a freak) I got goosebumps listening to this - well done brother!
wow Tom, the precision of your playing is phenomenal! This is how a cover should be done, no sliding into notes, every bend is exactly on the note it's supposed to be. Your playing is an inspiration. Great job!!!
ZDS, I never get tired of your GREAT work, not just your sound, but you style is poetry in motion, smooth, clean and uncomplicated. After having done a few of your lessons on VB I have come away more inspired then I ever was. I was sad when you lost everything, but I look forward to these tasties you put out. THANKS!!!
This solo sounds like the guitar is crying, There is so much feeling in that it just makes you ache for this type of Rock n Roll again. Great job! This will be hard to top!
The Guitar Leprechaun...... There's always MAGIC in your playing and the rainbow that leads to the pot of gold ends in your lap wherever and whenever you are playing your guitars. That LP surpasses your Gold standard. Just Superb!!!!
BTW - that rendering of the SLO100 is wicked close - WOW!! I remember playing through the one we had at Washington Music - bummer I didn't have the scratch for it at the time. That solo tone rocked my world!!
One my favorite parts from my favorite album and you nailed it. Reminds me of my '66 VW Beetle blasting Boston through four Jensen 6x9 triaxials, two Craig power amps, and a Pioneer under-dash supertuner.
First rock album I ever bought in the 70's and just wanted to say thanks for such a beautiful rendition. The feeling you are able to transcend through your playing is inspiring. Thanks again!
I watched your solo at least 30 times since finding it a few weeks ago. I wish i had natural ability and ear. I grew up with Boston and even saw them live when they toured for this album. They sounded just like the album live and i was shocked they could pull it off. One of the best solos by an american guitar player of all-time. thanks for music
What a great job! I liked all the subtle little differences between you and Tom Scholes' version - Your attack and vibratos are spot-on - triplets and position shifts smooth and precise - I personally like to really emphasize the bend releases on this one - but you make it sound great even without doing those so much. One of my all-time favorites - to listen to and play. Thank you!
AG Ag Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! I actually played this song live recently with the Lexington Lab Band, and it's posted on UA-cam. I'm the guy playing the Blue Paul Reed Smith guitar. Check it out when you can. Thanks again!
Now that's a Boston guitar solo. Like others have posted, it is possibly the most beautiful guitar solo of all time. Good job, dude. Now I'm going to have to break out my Boston tab book to nail this one. Thanks for the reminder I've got some homework.
Yknow, you may not have it perfect, but your phrasing is right on, and gdamn you're clipping it right enough. Ty for the heads up on the pure GENIUS guitar solo. i love this piece of work by a genius musician. It is by far one of the most amazing pieces of guitar work i can recall, ty.
VERY GOOD Sir!I share it on twitter.I grew up on Boston in high school and you're playing brought back wonderful memories.Tom Shultz was a guitar master but i still gotta give the king EVH the nod.But shultz playe the guitar like no other and it was a beautiful thing.I am still sad to this day and upset about Brad Delp checking out.Suicide is a terrible thing and i hope i never have those kind of demons that Brad had.
Charlie Johnson Very much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed it. I also played this song recently with the Lexington Lab Band. Such an amazing group of musicians, and all wonderful people. It's now up on UA-cam on the Tonedr channel :)
Absolutely phenomenal! I don't play guitar, but I know that's incredible talent and reflective of ungodly amounts of work. It's obvious you are passionate, which makes the work therapeutic. Thanks for sharing your unique gifts!
Nice work man! With a song as perfect as Hitch a Ride, it's easy to lose track of just how much work & talent it takes to create a great guitar solo. Thanks for the reminder!
you sir are magnificent! very nice cover. havent come across one of this caliber in a while. I watched it three times in a row just to see the flawless technical playing. excellent playing, keep it up! ( wish i could make my les paul sing like that!)
This solo along with the solo on the end of 38 Special's Fantasy girl are my two favorite solos ever, even though neither guitarist is my actual favorite guitarist. Great job.
There are few who will understand the significance of this short clip of one of the best songs in history.
I get it. Well done!
100% AGREE
The fact that this is actually two separate leads on separate guitars and he's doing it all says it all!!💯😎
I get it too, if one note was off, I would have noticed.
One of the most perfect and beautiful solos ever written
I'm with you on this one my friend. It never gets old.
You aint lying. Very well put together double lead
RanterInShades It’s a tossup for me between this and the stairway to heaven.
For when the casket is being loaded into the hearse...
That guitar solo lights up my ears like it's the 4th of July!
always sends a shiver down my spine.
one of the best solos ever.
Glen Page Thanks Glen! Please feel free to check out Lexington Lab band playing Foreplay/ Longtime. I am the one playing the blue Paul Reed Smith. And stay tuned for a Hitch a Ride coming up soon.
It should always be mentioned as among one of the best guitar solos in rock history.
Agreed
Absolutely. And the tone shift between phrases is soooo tasty.
Destiny wrote that song, as the guitar solo perfectly fits the lyrics, thanks
Very nicely executed. Timeless solo from one of the best albums every released. Thanks for the effort, and thanks for sharing .
Well fucking done sir!!!
That was awesome!
That was incredible! ❤When I was a kid maybe 14, we used this solo as a kind of soundtrack for our home movie, called "Bigfoot Must Die!" That was before home movies had sound -A long long time ago!!!❤ Great job!🎉
I’m pretty sure Tom S was a genius! MIT, designed and built his own recording equipment oh and wrote every song Boston has! Wow
Not to mention he plays all of the instruments like he invented them too
Scott Gregory To this day I’m still blown away at the amazing talent and genius of Tom Scholz. Hard to wrap my head around that the first Boston album was done mostly by him in a basement.
ZenDriveSeven yep
yes, why is he never mentioned when the great guitar heroes are mentioned? pretty sure he could outplay all of them too.
The guy was a musical mastermind
Masterpiece and you did justice to this timeless solo.
Thank you for proving that classic music still speaks. Peace!
My favorite solo of all time. melodic and perfect. Takes me to another place.
Criminally underrated solo. I wonder if Scholtz's decision to overlay two guitars has something to do with it (since it's not a true "solo" anymore).
+McFly Hey McFly...If I'm not mistaken, I think Barry actually came up with the basic structure of the solo. And like most Boston "solos" there are usually harmonies involved. I'm sure Tom added his magic touch somewhere in the process.
+ZenDriveSeven totally agree! Great cover and great playing. Thanks for posting!
ya there is an early version of Barry doing this solo on the internet somewhere. Apparently a decent amount of the original Boston solos were re-worked from barry's original versions.
@McFly....Scholz?? I believe Barry did this solo, give credit where its due...look at this video... ua-cam.com/video/lEMg03OSNKc/v-deo.htmlm26s
Interesting analysis, i would agree though that it is criminally underrated.
This is one of my top 3 guitar solos of all time - (hendrix all along the watchtower and the knack my sharona are the other two - yes I'm a freak)
I got goosebumps listening to this - well done brother!

Victor Levy I like your list! But it's my #1 ENDING guitar solo of all time :)
+Victor Levy Check out the guitar solo from Xanadu by Rush, it's pretty killer. I think Hitch a Ride is my second place...
wow Tom, the precision of your playing is phenomenal! This is how a cover should be done, no sliding into notes, every bend is exactly on the note it's supposed to be. Your playing is an inspiration. Great job!!!
Beautiful solo played brilliantly!

Absolutely phenomenal! I don't play guitar, but I know that's incredible talent and reflective of ungodly amounts of work. It's obvious you are passionate, which makes the work therapeutic. Thanks for sharing your unique gifts!
