  • It's a pain when you've got valuables that you just HAVE to bring to Burning Man with you. It's something that tends to affect us burners coming across from overseas, especially if you're planning on doing some pre or post trip adventuring!
Obviously if there's any way you can leave bits and pieces behind then that's going to make life a hell of a lot easier so try and think if there's any alternatives to bringing stuff along (like buying a pre paid phone out there instead of bringing yours along).
But, I'm sure that for at least some of you you're going to have at least a few items that you'd rather were protected from the dust and potential thieves so here are some tips to keep your valuables safe!

Thanks for the practical advice, it's a big consideration for those of us visiting from abroad. Can't believe it's only 46 days! :)

I always struggle with the valuables thing. This year I'm just going to leave them all at home and save myself the hassle. Pretty much everyone else in my group is bringing phones so there's really no need for me to have mine.
It's getting so close and gate opening is even closer!!!

I read on ePlaya that you can lock most electronics in your car, maybe in a mini cooler. Then you turn your keys into lost and found. Now you don't have to worry about losing your keys and everything is safe in the car!

I never heard about the lost and found thing! One year we had a big camp panic over some lost car keys that turned out to be with a camp mate that wasn't at camp at the time. Was definitely not fun, we always bring spares and hide them away now just in case.

My thinking where to hide valuables one would be in a zip lock bag bury in the ground center under your tent with a little bump to monitor . what is the grosses thing in your tent really dirty. Bring a broken phone or camera fake decoy to leave out to distract. Don't show off what you can't loose. Bring a cheap wallet put some expired junk in it put a bunch of ones and five dollar bills initial all discretely to leave out. Many time it the least obvious person who will steal. Don't broadcast things you care about. Lock your tent when you leave be friends with your neighbor .

I feel like people are really over thinking this, I doubt anyone will steal your stuff...

Burning Man corporate should plant some honey pot items and generators with GPS transmitters to catch the thieves and post their pictures extensively online. Let them know that if they steal at Burning Man, they WILL be caught. Then prosecute them and make sure the charges stick.
This is coming from someone who is very liberal and lives on the LEFT Coast. People coming to an event like this to steal from us is really sickening predatory behavior. I know of much worse but. . .
It is interesting that she mentions that Burn night is a big time for thieves to steal from everyone. Makes me really sick. I was telling my husband a few days ago that I bet lots of thefts happened during the burn. I was kind of half joking when I said that.
A negative (I am being restrained in my words to describe them) element comes to Burning Man to make a very good thing much less good for a lot of Burning Man citizens.
I hope that in 2019 the Burning Man organization and other Burners will do what is necessary to catch these "individuals" and let them know that it is not in their best interest to attend this event with the intent to steal from Burning Man citizens.
It is a community and it will attract all kinds. Doesn't mean the ones who are so damaged or whatever you want to call them that they steal from us should be allowed to get away with actions that bring harm to this otherwise incredible gathering of people.
This would only work with individuals caught with generators and other large objects with a GPS chip in them but it should be done.

I'm only going with one other person so my campsite will be unoccupied a lot when exploring the plya. I may keep all the food and valuables in the car while out and about. Thankfully you can buy ice at burning man.

Can you imagine Burning Man without ice! We'd all be stuck drinking horrible warm drinks and peoples food would stink by the second day! It's definitely a good idea to keep your valuables somewhere nice and safe, and meet your neighbours too because neighbours generally keep an eye on each others camps a little when they're at their own camp!
Make sure the car doesn't get too hot and fry your electronics batteries though if you're bringing any devices!

WARNING: in the day time your car will get stupid hot and any food will likely parish.. so I definatly would not recommend that in the day time and honestly nobody is going to try and steal your food.... hahaha your choice doe

I see you always stressing about the "alkaline" dust which on one hand I get but I think you might be stressing people out too much... I used my labtop on playa on an art car and the dust didnt phase it... and my phone was also fine. I get you would rather be safe than sorry but Ive never experienced the dust damaging my electronics... also I left my back pack at an art piece at deep playa and found it at lost and found 2 days later so hopefully the same can happen for anyone else loosing stuff. also you were talking about not bringing your camera, why on earth would you not bring your camera? obviously your gonna want to take pictures.....
