  • The temple at Burning Man is a special place for many people out there and a lot of people regard it as a sacred space. Like with many sacred spaces it has it's own special set of etiquette that you might want to be aware of before you head off to visit it, or settle in to watch it burn. So here's some tips on making sure you know what to do (and what not to do) while you're at the temple.
    For any of you that are visiting the temple because you have things going on it your life I really hope that the temple gives you whatever it is you're looking for and that everything works out for you. x

    going to the temple to grieve is a large reason I'm going to BM this year. I can't wait to leave it all in the desert and watch it burn into the universe.

    Brilliant Channel and thank you so much for all the information. I went to Burn in 2011 and am finally getting back to the playa now in 2023 and these are all just great reminders.

    Watching the temple burn at my local regional was the turning point that made fall in love with everything burning man is about... I remembered what I wrote in there the day before, and when it went up in flames I almost literally felt those emotions I wrote, lift away from me, which brought me to my knees in tears... I love the temple and what it can do.

    If I ever get to Burning Man, I want to volunteer to be a Temple Guardian. I am curious though, do they allow those glass novena style candles to be burned at the temple, or would that be considered MOOP?

      I hope you get to volunteer there someday! I honestly don't know about the glass style candles, I've never left anything in the temple to be burned but I'm sure there are rules about what can and can't be left. I know that burning plastic and stuff isn't allowed in general because of the toxic fumes so maybe that would apply to those types of candles as well.

      Any object that is sacred to you may be placed in the Temple, regardless of material. At the end of the week there will be thousands of objects in there made of everything you can think of. If it is something you are letting go of, then it is not moop. It is where it belongs, in the temple. Just make sure it isn't going to blow away in the wind or blow up when we burn the temple (An airtight metal object for example). You can place candles of any sort in the temple, but you may not light them. If a guardian allows that to happen, then it is because they have chosen to personally stand guard over the candles so long as they are lit. Generally though it is not something allowed because all temples are designed to burn, and some temple designs are even packed with "fuel" to help that happen. That is why the guardians are going to ask you to not smoke, smudge, light incense, candles, etc. Please join the Guardians though. We'd love to have you. You may even have a shift lead by me :) -Guardian Cuchulainn

    I just want to know what the moop ediquitte for pictures or ashes is in temple. I’ve never been but I wouldn’t want to create any type of trash.

      So, MOOP means Matter Out Of Place. If you put something in the Temple to let go of it or use it to honor what ever it may be, then it is not out of place. It belongs in the Temple, and the Temple Guardians will watch over it. Get what I mean? If it is sacred to you, then it is not moop in the temple. You can leave pretty much whatever you want to. Towards the end of the week you will see the temple filled with thousands and thousands of objects and pictures. What you need to consider is how you secure things in the temple so that if a storm hits us your stuff isn't flying out creating moop outside the temple. So for pictures or papers, or thin objects you can totally use a staple gun to attach them. Put a rock on them. Whatever works. Heavier things, use some screws or rope. If something is large, or awkward, or you're just not sure, ask a guardian. Guardians usually have a bandanna you can use to spot them. Some have a radio on them like a police officer. Or if you're really good at spotting things, some guardians will be wearing a tiny bracelet with a bell attached. If we see you struggling with how to place an object, then we may seek you first to see if we can't help you. Another concern to consider is sealed, airtight containers, especially metal ones, because they explode and send out shrapnel when the temple burns. Just make sure things are not airtight. -Guardian Cuchulainn

    Every year, there is on e person or one art car that doesn't get it, that makes a bunch of noise and brings disrespect to the temple burn. Everyone hates that person. Don't be that person.

      I can never understand why that happens, it's such a special time for so many people that are at the temple burn, I don't get why anyone would decide to try and disrupt it.

      This is a very controversial subject when it comes to the Temple and something debated often among the Guardians. However, we need to keep in mind that it is how some people grieve, and telling the difference between someone grieving or just being a jerk can be hard. For example, the year that members of the DPW blasted "Free Bird" was a tribute to one of their own who had died. A very fitting tribute too if you know the backstory. Many Burners were angry about it, but the hierarchy of the Guardians was ok with it. We can't pick and choose what kind of grieving is ok and what is not, as hard as that may seem to accept. It is the charge of Guardians to approach all situations involving the temple from a place of love, empathy, and openness. I would hope that the Burning Man community would adopt that approach too. -Guardian Cuchulainn

    Not creating moop is so important for BM but how does the actual burns not adversely effect the environment? I know you mention putting out a cigarette out on the playa is a no no but what about the huge scorch mark the burns leave? Just curious :))

      I get the no mopping shit, but I'm more concerned about the 20k plus vehicles leaking oil and fluid all over the place

      @redhotgalego 7 років тому +5

      Milk 2 Percent you're supposed to put something under your vehicle to prevent leaks from reaching the soil. As for the burn, there are people who spend a number of weeks in the playa just cleaning and restoring the environment.

      I understand that something like a gravel bed is built under all art Burns a gravel bed is set up before any art piece that is planned to be burned exception unless said art piece is not going to be burned example that half sunk pirate ship at BM2012 that art was dismantled piece by piece to be re-erected somewhere else I know I was there at BM2012 and watched them start taking that art piece apart as for the smoke and ash that goes up that is another matter well my woodstove also creates smoke and ash that goes up but it is cold in Canada and I am going to use my woodstove sometimes
