I have dived at Ti Point many times. Our club did a couple of fantastic drift dives from Ti Point and I would do it again in a heart beat. Proper planning along with a surface safety boat for recovery of the divers is mandatory. Plenty of gas and good solid wings with 20Kg plus lift. A hand held float with blue peter on and staying deep and bunched up will keep you out of boat harm. I highly recommend the dive to experienced divers.

The current there is so dangerous, I still remember that the first time I kayaked there, i was exhausted fighting with the outgoing current at the neck point when i was trying to be back to the launch point. You have to always make plans in advance for a safe trip.
Yep for sure. It’s not the place rock up and just hope for the best. A good plan goes along way, but at ti point if you don’t have one, you might go even further lol

Agreed, diving directly in the channel there is just ridiculous. The boat traffic there on any weekend is just tempting fate to be taken out by a jet-ski or boat. Float will do bugger all with some of those drivers
Yeah, with the way things are it will only be a matter of time until someone gets smoked. Only safe way to dive it would probably be directly off a proper boat or kayak.
I learn’t to dive there and loved it. We found heaps of variety. Mostly comes down to right tide right time.
Incredible variety! It's one of those places that you never know what to expect, always an adventure. Some of the more interesting species I speared there are stargazer and squid. Even got a legal scallop on the shallow flat sandy area before the closure.
I once had a bronzy grab the butterfish at the end of the float at Ti Point. It dragged me through the water for ages when it somehow got itself tangled in the line.
Thats unfortunate, good reason to get a float boat. They are more expensive and slight pain to dive with but seriously worth towing around.

Cheers mate. I know the area, we are just down the road. Exactly true, tide current through the channel is off the planet. You need to be so super fit to even think of taking a dive at Ti Point . Talking about the boat traffic, I think I would rather take my chances with the sharks. Stay safe.
It can be a wicked spot for sure. It's easy to underestimate, as I have done in the past. I'd much rather be getting up close and personal with the sharks than boats.

Absolutely beautiful, my favorite dive on that coast. Often more than I bargain for, however. Wouldn't call it "a chill spot for a quick and easy dive"

To be honest (IMO), I think most of the shark encounters in this area are at ‘The Outpost’ which is the point at the north side of Leigh Harbour..

@@BlueNeoprene I’ve dived there and didn’t see any ‘taxman’ but I’ve heard plenty of people recount stories of encounters there.
Just watch the people who come down to the wharf... particularly towards dark.

@@BlueNeoprene back in 2015 something happened to a couple of fisherman. It's a bit isolated... So be vigilant!
as long as some boat doesnt run you over, you could just float over to omaha if the current gets too much.
It is possible, but you are very much at the mercy of the water. If you're diving the channel and lose a fin or two, it's not up to you where you end up. Best case scenario, Omaha or inland. Worse case you're doing an overnight mission to little barrier lol

Thank you Monewa! I will try my best, but the ocean will always have an element of unpredictability. I believe that most problems can be avoided or easily resolved with the right knowledge. I hope to live a long life but when I do pass, I would prefer it be in the ocean!

When shoul you dive then because we dived ti point 3 or 4 times now,the first time wasn’t good because we didnt know of the current but thes past times wasn’t as bad
At a guess go probably near slack/mid tide when its changing to incoming that way you wont be getting sucked out and there should be less dirt in the water its getting sucked up instead of spit out
I second what Logan said. You never know when the fish will be there but it's always going to be safer diving around the slack tide. Weekdays are best as there is less boat traffic. It's also worth looking into tidal coefficients, some days will have more water movement than others. Usually when I dive Ti point I will check it out before hand and be ready to pull the pin if its not nice. There are other easier spots close by. Dive when you can, Ti point can be a good option but not always. Don't force it

How deep do you have to dive at ti point
You have to always dive within your abilities, well within preferably. You would have to swim along way to find anything deeper than about 14m but as anywhere, you can shoot fish from the surface. The most productive depths are usually 0-10m
The sharks are there but they are not aggressive in my experience I love ti point
They pick their battles. I have personally witnessed sharks taking much more "interest" in new or inexperienced divers. I think that by simply conducting yourself with competence most sharks will leave you alone. Maybe the sharks recognize you, but know you are not a noob so they are not aggressive towards you?

That makes more sense than the white and blue on to be honest, hard to see out on the water
