  • This video talks about how to read Tire size information, and explains why we chose to purchase new mud terrain tires for our Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. How much larger did we go? How do we like the tires we bought? We loved our original BF Goodrich KMs 255/75/R17. We went with something better though.

    I run Hankook Dayna Pro MT 2's ( 265/70/R17) on my 2019 Sport S. I opted for the 10 ply and here in Montana on snow, ice and mud they do great.

    I just replaced my stock mud terrain tires with some Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ LT285/70R17 tires.
    They are 33's and made a huge improvement for noise and street handling, plus they look really good on the Jeep. Had to put some wheel spacers on though because of rubbing when the steering wheel was on full turn. And I put on a Teraflex (1-1/2 inch lift ) performance spring leveling kit with some Fox Performance 2.0 shocks, what a difference in ride comfort, didn't think the springs and shocks would improve the ride but boy was I wrong.

      wrangler, I like the look of the 285s with the spacers too. I think it wouldn't look as good with mine because mine are narrower. What kind of backspacing do you have with your rims, and without the spacers? What part of the ride is improved? Can you describe it more? I was thinking about a lift to stiffen things up a bit since we carry a lot of stuff with us. I actually wish I could just get stiffer springs at the same ride height. Haven't been able to find those yet.

      I am not sure of the back spacing, but I have the same rims as you have, I bought them off of Craig's list from a guy that bought a 2016 Rubicon for his wife and she wanted different rims and tires. I put on 2 inch spacers front and rear.
      The teraflex leveling kit raised my jeep by 2 inches in the front and one inch in the rear. ( 1-1/2 lift ).
      Not much of a lift compared to what other people put on their jeep, but it helps a lot with the extra weight I have on my jeep: recovery rear bumper and tire carrier, front recovery bumper, and I just put on my Super winch 8,500 lb today, the winch weighs 72lbs with the wire rope. Going to get synthetic rope for it later, saving around 20lbs.
      And I also have a Kargo Master full safari rack that weighs quite a bit.
      So that is a lot of extra weight before loading all the camping gear.
      The Teraflex performance leveling kit took the front nose droop away and made the jeep stance level. And the fox performance 2.0 shocks made a huge difference. When going over a bumpy dirt road with pot holes my head would swing back and fourth a lot. Now with the fox shocks the ride is so much smoother. they take the fatigue out of driving long distances.
      I would recommend these shocks to anybody.

    well it's been a tad over 4 yrs, how did the tires hold up? i'm currently debating on tires and have looked at the 255 80 r 17s as well...i have a leveling kit on my '17 rubi so it sits just a bit taller than stock so i'm not concerned with rubbing or anything..how was it with MPGs and did u notice any other issues other than breaking and acceleration after a while?

    Great video, thanks. Question: you mentioned the gearing you have on your jeep. Is that stock gearing, or did you modify that? Thanks.

      I have the stock gearing for an automatic Rubicon. 3.73.

    Great video...did you have any issues with speedometer being off with larger diameter tires?
    Thank you

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  7 років тому

      Frenzy Fire, the speedometer was off a little bit. I bought my tires on Thursday and Saturday I had an appointment at Jeep to have my thermostat housing replaced. I had them update the tire size in the computer. They did it for around $50. The speedometer is now accurate having passed a few of those radar speed limit signs.

    How as the dependability been over the first 43K miles? Is that up in Canada again for those off roading clips?

      Rich Beach, We had our first issue with the Jeep. We had a smell of radiator fluid coming from the front end. I couldn't find where the leak was coming from. It was slow, but always seemed to be there. turns out it was the thermostat housing. I took it to a local dealer that sees a lot of Wranglers, and they fixed it for $230. I think that is a little high, but there is a lot of labor involved in it. No smell afterward. That is it for my issues with the Jeep. So far so good(knock on wood)

      Rich Beach, Yep older footage from Ottawa, Alaska, and Alberta. Can't wait to get out of the snow and into the dirt again.

      One thing the dealer didn't tell me was about what anti freeze to put in the jeep. I found out later through a UA-cam video that if you use anything other than the factory recommended anti freeze you can destroy your engine.
      The 2007 to 2012 Wranglers use a HOAT (Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) coolant, whereas
      2013+ Wranglers have switched to a OAT (Organic Additive Technology). Chrysler insists that these coolants are NOT interchangeable, and any mixing of the two can result in accelerated cooling system corrosion and overheating.
      If you mix these two anti freezes together it will turn into a thick syrup and over heat your engine.

    Did you lose any power and or change your shift points?

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  7 років тому +1

      I did lose a little power, with lower RPMs at the same speed. It is still acceptable, I liked the acceleration better stock, but it will probably save me gas since I won't try to drive it as quickly any more.

      I have a 2017 sport unlimited with 3.73. I think when i get new wheels and tires i will stick with the 32's. thanks for posting this on UA-cam.

    whats the 1 year cost of ownership of this Jeep Rubicon. gas,oil and maintenance. thank you

    • @ExploringJeeps
      @ExploringJeeps  7 років тому +1

      I put way too many miles on my Jeep to be able to give you a valid number, but I would calculate it for you with the following numbers. Take the number of miles you plan to drive, lets call that X. Divide X by 17. This will give you a rough estimate of the number of gallons of gas you will use for the year. Multiply that by the cost of a gallon of gas. that will give you your fuel cost. Now for oil changes, I divide X by 5000 and that will give me how many oil changes I need to have for the year. Cost of an oil change could be between $40 and $120 depending on the oil you chose and if you chose to do it yourself. I got 44,000 miles out of my tires. Exact replacements would be about $1000 for a Rubicon if you shop around. I hope this info helps.
