    What is the sealer? Is it necessary?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 роки тому +2

      If you are referring to sealing the pot before mosaicking, some people say yes and others say no, terracotta will absorb the moisture out of adhesives like thinset so using a penetrating sealant helps to prevent this, however you can soak the pot in water and use an adhesive like thinset which will help stop the absorption from the adhesive as well. They also claim that the thinset will bond better to the pot than having a penetrating sealant on it if the sealant were to fail so will your mosaic. However there are companies that make waterproof membranes such as Laticrete Hydroban that works with Laticrete thinset and of course there are thinsets that adhere to glass which is totally smooth, it depends on the type of environment you're in as well. It really comes down to weighing up everything and going with what you think is right. As always whatever adhesive or product you are looking at using always read the manufactures technical sheet which is very easy to read before purchasing to ensure its suitable for the job, the tess and the environment its in. :)

    Peter, I am watching this video both on my desk top and TV. I love how you use the teaspoon, I can add another piece. My question was going to be about the bottom of a plate when it has the rim it sits up on. I see you have used them in this flower pot with the ridge facing out. Now I don't have to throw these pieces away. Really enjoy your videos. I'm reconstructing a bird bath that my Mum gave to me years ago, a neighbours cat knocked it over and broke the dish (cat escaped) I have repaired it - so I will be working on doing mosaic work in dish. Love how your flower pot turned out. Thank you.

      Im so glad you are enjoying the videos, I generally just buy 3mm mirror from a glazier and then cut the strips to size. This allows me to create any width I need, I do purchase round mirrors though around 25m, I cut them in half and quarters to make different shapes, I buy those online from Mandella Art in Victoria . ThANK YOU. I'm motivated by this video. This will be my first project so forgive me if these are obvious or have been answered already. Questions: Can I use thinset to seal the terra cotta pot. And if I'm not using mirror, then thinset to adhere as well? And is there no sealant at the end, once it is grouted?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 роки тому +1

      Thankyou very much Kathleen so glad the video has motivated you. That’s a very good question regarding the thinset as a sealant. Generally speaking, There are different thinsets on the market. some people don’t even seal their pots they just apply thinset directly to the pot, but they do wet it down first so as the terracotta doesn’t absorb the moisture out of the thinset when they apply their tessera to it. I prefer to use a penetrating sealant on the inside of the pot at least because soils and fertilisers do leach chemicals out but that’s just me there are no hard and fast rules on it as everyone has their preferences. You can use thinset to apply your tessera which is what l prefer to use, just make sure it’s rated for the tessera you’re using as there are different ones on the market. You can seal the sanded grout at the end if you want to or use an epoxy grout such as the Litokol brand no need to seal as it’s waterproof. 😊

    Thank you for this inspiring video! I loooove the cheery colors! I wish I knew what the American equivalents are for the adhesive Fix All and the sealant. I was wondering if you put soil directly in your pot or slip a plastic liner pot in. I’m also frustrated trying to find a variety of grout colors. The black you used MADE your piece-really brought out those vivid colors, but I cannot find black grout. Maybe some of your other American viewers have some advice on that...

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  4 роки тому +2

      Thankyou very much. The balck grout is Laticrete Permacolour grout and is available in the USA as Laticrete head office is there, I and made a video on how to locate your nearest supplier ua-cam.com/video/t0ZHoEpwldg/v-deo.html . You can tint your grout with oxides which are used for colouring cement available at hardware stores that sell cement. When I have mosaicked pots I can put soil directly into the pot but I generally dont because the post can crack as the plant grows so I really just use it as a cover for the plant thats already in a pot. That way the mosaic pot will last a lot longer. :)

    Fabulous can you use all media’s as well as plates and take it to different levels like you have include vintage spoons, what about. Beads, diamantees
    I love bling don’t we all in tasteful designs like you have done. Colour combination is key yes to a successful design?
    Love Love bless you.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 роки тому

      Thanks very much Ebony. You can use pretty well anything providing it suits the environment that its in, some plates are reasonably friable when you cut them or the glaze may have crazing which means the plate is compromised and shouldn't be used outside. Plates generally shouldn't be used outside although I do but there's no freeze thaw cycles where I live, so taking into the account of what you are going to use and the environment its in is very important. The same applies to beads and all other manner of tess and also the type of mosaic you are creating, is it a wall hanging or a birdbath, a birdbath has tess that is constantly submerged in water so that needs to be considered. The same also applies with foil backed rhinestones, generally fading is an issue. For inside mosaics its a lot easier and yes colour but also design is very important but I tend to wing everything I do, I just use what I love but I do take into account all of the above and see where it takes me which breaks the design rules in itself. lol :)

    Thanks so much for the tutorial. My question is about the edge of the rim, between mirror top and broken plate base. I noticed you wiped away the grout along the edge. Did you do that so it wouldn't break later? And any tips for the bottom? Thanks again.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 роки тому +1

      Thankyou so much Margot, appreciate that. I wiped the grout away from the edge as grout on its own has no adhesive properties, so eventually it would most likely chip or crack as its meant to be used as a filler for grout lines. As far as the bottom is concerned just make sure the pot does not sit on the tess, that's why I kept its lightly away from the bottom.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 роки тому +1

      Thankyou very much Michelle. I would not recommend using anything on a finished mosaic except a grout sealer to seal the grout if you've used ordinary sanded grout, if you want a gloss finish then use tessera that is gloss. Any gloss that is sprayed on could go yellow or possibly flake off depending on the tessera you're using further down the track. Just my thoughts though. :)

Or paint the inside? The dark colored grouts are hard to wipe off the inside. Thank you for this video, it helped me a lot.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 роки тому

      Thankyou and glad the video has helped you. Generally you wont see the inside of the pot, I really wouldn't do anything with the inside except for the sealing. You can tape the inside rim of the pot with painters tape or even add plastic to the inside to protect all the inside area and then grout then all you have to do is peal the tape and plastic off when youve finished cleaning up the grout and you should have a very clean inside rim. :)

    Hi Peter, is it safe for plant to put it directly to this pot?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 роки тому

      Hi Mozhdeh, good question, the Bondall ornament sealer is not meant to be used where water pools, now being inside the pot maybe an issue as far as the waterproofing goes due to the constant soil and water, hence why l sealed the pot all over. I personally wouldn’t plant directly into the pot due to this reason also the chances are if you were to repot as the plant gets bigger the mosaic pot would probably break. If you wanted to plant directly in the pot then l wouldn’t seal the inside. 😊

      No really advisable as a plastic pot can have flex in it, also it becomes brittle over time and you can also has a situation with adhesives due to the surface tension, stick to terracotta or concrete if you are in a freeze thaw area then concrete as its a lot less porous than terracotta. :)

    Can we mosaic a plastic pot, since terra-cotta ones are hard to find?
    This video is for terracotta: www.youtube. Where to find one for plastic?

      I wouldn't mosaic a plastic pot as they can become brittle and they generally have some flex in them, concrete would be a better option then.
