    Thank you. You straightened me out about my question of how to attach the tiles to the mesh. It made no sense to me to put glue all over the tile, then put the mesh and tile over the quickset. The quickset would just be sticking to the glue, not to the tile! Also you have convinced me not to use the sticky mesh. My plan is to cut tiles out of stained glass to cover the ugly surround on my fireplace. The more I've been procrastinating by watching UA-cam videos, the better it seems I am getting educated, lol.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much, many people do use others adhesives to adhere the tile to the mesh such as Weldbond because they find that easier, using only a couple of dabs of adhesive to tack the tile to the mesh not covering the tile in glue, that allows the thinset to cover the tile when they adhere it as the thinset does the heavy work. The more you watch, listen and read the more you learn but just remember there is always more than one way to complete a project and everyone has their preferences its just finding which way best suits the job and your needs. Its good to research as you may find a better way than what Ive suggested. :)

      Thankyou very much, you can trim off further excess of the mesh if you want to in-between the petals just depends on your design. To adhere just add some thinset to the wall using a notched trowel or notched scraper around a 5mm notch so you can a even coverage approx same size area as the flower, push the flower into the thinset firmly but not right to the wall and then clean excess thinset from around flower if there is any. Grout when your wall is finished and the thinset has cured. :)

      Thanks so much Chris, I haven't come across a plastic that doesn't work but I tend to use firmer plastics rather than the cling wraps styles, I find it lays flatter and overall is easier to use, its still a soft plastic but not as soft as the cling wraps. :)

    Great video, Thankyou. Can you just place the meshed patterns direct to the wet concrete pavers and pat them down gently so the concrete acts as the grout? Or will the mesh show through when the paver dries?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 роки тому

      Thankyou very much, appreciate that. When you complete the mosaic on mesh, its placed directly into the thinset. If you apply to much thinset it will squish up into the grout lines, however if you are relying on the thinset to actually do the grouting I think it will get very messy because applying to much thinset will go everywhere and applying to little it wont self grout. I would be applying the thinset as normal to the paver and then grouting when its cured, its another step but it will be considerably easier. Thankyou for watching. :)

    I hope you can advise...This is great information unfortunately it came a bit too late to help me with my recent project... Doing a mosaic on the front of our porch. Approximately two-and-a-half feet by 50 ft. I made 50 7x7 inch squares of various designs on mesh. These will be placed every foot along the front of the porch face. I will tell the background using pieces from one basic color tile.
    The problem is... For my 7x7 squares, I used weld Bond. The substrate is redwood (with the paint sanded off)... I planned on using thinset to adhere the tiles ( and the 7x7 squares) to the redwood substrate...
    I'm in over my head... In this video you say not to use weldbond... I cannot imagine removing the tessera And regluing them with thinset... Is that what you would advise?
    Also...maybe having the redwood as substrate well pose a problem with the freezing and thawing here in Colorado...
    Thanks for your great videos!

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  4 роки тому +1

      Thankyou very much, appreciate that and sounds like an awesome mosaic. I cant advise specifically on your project as there are so many variables, I dont know about the location, environment, the tess etc also I haven't used Redwood but the mosaic golden rule is not to mosaic onto timber outside as wood interacts with the environment and can cause issues for a mosaic, wood can shrink, expand, crack etc which means the longevity of the mosaic is not great. Weldbond is moisture sensative and if it comes in contact with moisture or humidity it can revert back to its original state, I would definitely advise not using Weldbond as your primary adhesive and if I am using thinset I then I tack with thinset but thats me personally, people have used Weldbond to tack the tess onto the mesh and then used a different adhesive as the primary. People have also used Weldbond successfully outside sealed well but there are others that haven't, there are better adhesives to use without the risk of moisture effecting it. You have mentioned its under a porch which may help but I haven't got an answer to your problem, if you have commercial mosaic artists around your area that have made outdoor mosaics you could run it by them as they may have a solution for you or create a post in the mosaic forums on Facebook with photos as that will help considerably rather than visualizing or trying to guess. :)

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 роки тому +1

      Thankyou very much Jacqualine. That depends on the thickness of your tess and the type of trowel. The one I used was a 4mm square and v notched trowel its suitable for stained glass and vitreous tiles, I could have used a deeper notched trowel, one that would have added more thinset on the the paver as the tiles were thicker and a different material, however it was just a small paver. :)

    Do you suggest embedding 3D objects into the picture or putting them over top the tiles?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 роки тому

      A good question, if you are meaning things like roses, leaves, jewllery, flowers etc, if I want the objects to be a part of the mosaic then I embed them, sometimes I do both, I will embed some and add some to it after grouting. It really depends on what they are, how easy they will be to clean up and also the look of what I aiming for in the piece. What you dont want is to have them sitting on the top and they look like they have just been added they need to be cohesive with the final piece. :)

    I am pondering the process for a cinderblock wall I plan to mosaic. Wouldn't it be easier to mosaic several mesh panels instead of individual flowers etc? Or, if cutting out individual flowers on mesh, can I then create the mural by tack gluing the individual meshed flowers to larger mesh panels...ie. resultin in double mesh thickness to thin set.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 роки тому

      I can’t comment specifically about your job as there are many variables that l cannot see. Generally when you are using mesh you can create different size panels to make it easier to handle. You can also create individual flowers and apply them where you want to and fill in around them. I wouldn’t be creating a double mesh thickness though because you want the thinset to squeeze through the mesh and adhere everything in place. You need to make sure each piece is embedded well into a layer of thinset. 😊

      Thankyou so much for watching and subscribing. I’m not a fan of mosicking onto plastic due to the surface tension many adhesives find difficult to adhere. Some people use silicone but using that long term is not good for your health as it continues to give off solvents while curing. Depending on where it’s going plastic can become brittle, definitely don’t use plastic if has flex in it.

    Could I use embroidery craft plastic mesh? To attach my glass pieces of mosaic? I find it to be a lot cheaper than marketed tile mesh backing!
    One more question, do you have to work fast with the thinset if I were to fill in the outer part outside of my design on mesh, and fill the rest of the paver with tile onto the thinset, do I have to work quick does it dry fast?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  20 днів тому

      If you are using thinset its best to use Alkaline Resistant Mesh because the thinset is so alkaline, I am not familiar with embroidery craft plastic mesh but being plastic I would consider this a red flag. The mosaics we produce will only be as good as the materials we use.
      There are different thinsets on the market some are rapid cure and others are not, the curing of the thinset is also effected by the environment its in as well. When you apply the thinset its best to work with some pace if the thinset is exposed on a large area. If you are going to create a mosaic and applying tesserae one piece at a time then you would be best to use the baggie system. This allows you to work with the thinset in the bag for an hour or two again depending on the environment. This is the way I generally work when creating a mosaic and using thinset. You do have sometime to work with thinset that's exposed but its relative to what you can get done before the thinset begins setting up. Thanks for watching. :)

      Thankyou so much Elizabeth. cement based adhesives and grout are pretty cheap and are aimed at the tiling market. Storing them correctly is very important. You can buy smaller quantities from OzMosaics in QLD. Generally coloured oxides are good for colouring ordinary sanded grouts and cement based adhesives. Always read the technical data sheets first before adding any colourants on the product you're using, they are easy to read and generally available on the manufactures website to ensure compatibility. :)

      Thanks so much Kathy. Thinset is very alkaline so using alkaline resistant mesh helps guard against the mesh becoming compromised due to the alkalinity. I have never used nylon mesh but l believe that it’s also alkaline resistant and softer so for certain projects it could be quite useful. It has been something that l have thought about trying and doing some R&D because l know very little about it. Thanks for the comment. 😊

    Does the tile scorer tool used at the beginning have a specific name?

    • @TreasuryRoad

      After I shoot the video I thought I should have named that. Its just a tile scorer and breaker, you can also use a glass scorer as well.

    Hi I’ve tried thinset on mesh and pots with very poor outcomes. As in the tiles all dropping off my pots or the mesh. What am I doing wrong?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Lib, there are so many possibilities as to why you are having issues, far to many that can be gone through in this thread. Failure of the thinset can be caused by user error, the thinset hasn't been rated for the materials you are using, you can get thinset that is rated for one material but not for glass, I would check this first as this is a common problem. It can also be not slaking of the thinset, temperature, very porous materials, doing it on a hot day, not enough thinset has been applied, tessera has not been imbedded into the thinset but just sits on top, etc. There are just so many reasons that can cause this issue. :)

      @@TreasuryRoad I rd watched your videos with using thinset. I know I did not let it slake long enough and I mixed it with water as my packet 20kg of it, did not suggest any other mixing agent. I only used it on clay pots both sealed and mesh and haven’t been game to try it again. Where do you purchase Ladercrete from so I can try that one. I’ve had plenty of success with liquid nails on all surfaces. Thank you for your helpful responses. Lib.

      @@libwade5350 You did the right thing not adding anything else to the thinset unless the packet or the technical data sheet says otherwise. It could very well have been the slaking or the sealant you used. Don’t give up because thinset is an awesome product. I use Laticrete thinset and created a video on using their website to find your nearest retailer it’s in my channel. 😊

      I just used the same tools as what I used for the circle, I will probably do a follow up video, I just used the double wheeled nippers to take off a little of the curve and then chipped away with very small chips with the compound nippers. :)

      @TreasuryRoad  3 роки тому

      I have never used liquid nails so I cant tell you, other people do use other adhesives, if you do you just need a dab, as your primary adhesive will do the work and will adhere to the majority of the tess area and the substrate.
