Congratulations on figuring out the CHT and all ur hard word on baffles really paid off. Now you can add the additional understanding of the ignition into ur troubleshooting for the future. As a pilot and A&P I love watching these kinds of real world aircraft owners stories. Keep it up!
Thank you for the awesome video again. Glued to the screen during the entire trip. I always like, I will start sharing the videos. Great content, enjoy all the effort. I fly vintage American Aerolights Eagle ultralights with a canard. Thanks again.
It's one of those deals where you feel like you could kick yourself because you never thought to think about what other systems in the aircraft would cause the same type of symptoms. I never thought it would have been an ignition problem
FYI, In addition to South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay), Kelly's Island DOES have a runway, and so do Middle Bass Island, and North Bass Island, . Boat and ferry service to the islands stops when the lake starts to freeze over in the winter months. Those runways are the only way off the islands in the winter. The air taxi service based at Port Clinton (KPCW) takes kids to school! Back in the '40s thru the '70s, Island Airlines flew Ford Trimotors to the islands!!!
It wasn't showing up on my map because I have it configured not to show any airport with less than a 2500 foot runway. 2800 is my absolute lower limit, I'll use 2500 in an emergency, but the 2200 foot runway at Kelly's island is right out - so I didn't see it on my map.
@@CanardBoulevard I get that. A canard aircraft just isn't a short-field or rough surface aircraft like the similar-powered Beechcraft, Cessna or Piper with their thick high-lift airfoils... BUT you get to fly MUCH faster and farther! My next question is will you try your new prop again, now that you have the CHT problem addressed?
Very nice. I love the editing. Well done on the go around. Well done on the ignition. I couldn't quite make out the engine data, but with the improved ignition, I would expect to see higher EGTs along with the lower CHTs. Was that the case? Mike Busch' s book "On Engines" has great information on engine data interpretation and differential diagnosis. Well worth the read for anyone into that sort of thing . Thanks for the video!
Kudos for your suggestion in replies to Scott's 4/27 video to look closely at ignition timing as a primary cause of higher CHTs. Curious why the high-temp problem persisted when the mag and electronic ignitions were selected independently during testing.
I was wondering that too. I'm guessing that the electronic ignition was failing in a way that would not show up initially in a ground run up, but presented as elevated CHTs in air initially and then progressed to complete failure on the ground run up . Some electronic ignitions do adjust timing at altitude, so it could have been an issue with that function not working correctly, possibly? I'm not sure, but an interesting chain of events on the CHT troubleshooting for sure.
the good: the first trip to put-in bay! flying with your wife! cooling issues fixed! goat cheese bacon dates! the tour! wild discovery of CHT fix! the bad: short/hard landing. flies. ignition death. traffic. commentary: haven't recognized the vocal fry on the west coast. interesting. wondering how regional it is? thanks for posting this. glad you figured out the CHT, the graphs make it easy to see.
3:33 DUDE !!!! THAT RUNWAY VIEW (the whole airport) IS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER THAN CANARD GUTTER ALLEY (beta .002b blvd.... lol hahahah snikker) sigh, for a KITFOX or ZENITH or TEMP FIX CUZ YOU HAVE A PLANE AND it is all that you can find and you gotta put your plane somplace!!! SOOOO HAPPY FOR YOU !! such an awesome upgrade!!! apprecieate you takin us along with ya !!! I’m with you. When people let their voice trail off to a growl, it irritates me to no end. It could be one of the most uncool things someone can do to be cool.
Great video. Thank-you. 👏 You mentioned a followup to what happened to fix the timing of your EI? From what l can gather you cleaned and reseated all the contacts and this fixed the issue? I have a similar problem with my LE ignition with high CHT’s that are slowly getting worse with nothing else changing. I’ll certainly try what you have done. I am curious if you found out more. 😊
I am new, nice flight glad you flew home with no problems. At the end of the video what is the plane that was parked out side? May be it is something Jimmy is Interested in, Jimmy from Jimmy’s World.😂😂
Thanks for this very instructional video - much appreciated! I would have never guessed that these overheating problems do come from engine timing. One question though: Is it necessary that you recite the whole sentence of 'xyz this is experimental cozy 797DL.. yada yada yada' at each and every transmission? It's been a lot of years since I flew in the US but wouldn't 'cosy 7DL' be more than sufficient as a call sign perhaps with the exception of the very first contact? The idea being to save some bandwidth... ret. ATP ...
If you are broadcasting into the blind (i.e. CTAF or UNICOM) then that is the correct verbiage according to the FAA. If you're talking to ATC, then once they have responded with a shortened call sign, you can use that shortened call sign from that point forward in communications with that controller.
5:26 WOW... I CAN ALMOST SEE FULTON STREET off at like 10:30 11slightly off to the left over the carnard, (it's to the left of the gypsim quarry...is how I always thunk of location/locating it) ... COOOOLD up there.....
Its possible that the mag wasn't working at all at full throttle cylinder pressures. High EGT and CHT temps are one mag symptoms. I think you have an 0 360. If so I'm concerned about the 2200 rpm being low for full throttle at your elevation.
in my troubleshooting experience with systems 70% of the time it is something minor or not a real failure. it pays to check connections and measure components. nice catch
Glad to see your CHT issue is resolved and that your extra ducting is working. Curious if you are comfortable with the electronic ignition? It started working but do you why? Any concerns it will stop working unexpectedly again? I was holding my breath on your takeoff from the island, that would have been a really bad time for the power loss to show up again. Love your videos, watch them as soon as they come out.
