    My first night flight ever was out of KLPR to KMFD (few pattern stops) and back. Second time, again out of KLPR, west to KFZI, then KPCW and back to KLPR to meet private cert minimum reqs. First flight notes: I found flying at night to be fine except thinking about engine out scenarios. If the engine were to quit, I think less than a 25% chance of living as it's impossible to discern field from trees etc. Even the roads, some of which are lit and visible, would be guarded by power lines and traffic lights. I think the only / best defense beyond being sure as you can be that the engine is good, would be to gain as much altitude as practical to improve your chances of finding a reasonable place to put down. BTW, KMFD didn't have vasi nor papi the night I was there (same as you showed flying back to 1G5). Lack of vas/papi didn't bother me at all, though, maybe because most of my time is on floats? Second flight notes: We flew on a night with pretty good wind from the north setting up a strong crosswind with runways 07-25, 09-27 and 09-27 respectively (I took off and landed to the west each time). At night, it was difficult for me to understand what the crosswind was going to do even after hearing the numbers on ATIS, it's not the same experience as seeing trees or water etc. So, my first couple landings and take offs were crap as I got blown around pretty good. Finally figured out what was going on and took off / landed thereafter with ample aileron inputs and that made all the difference. Really good learning experience. Returning back to KLPR, spotting the airport beacon was really hard and briefly found myself on the way to KCLE and its Class B before getting "corrected" by my CFI; even with the gps map it was hard. BTW, on a daytime flight the day before my second night flight, also out of KLPR and this time to the east and back. Whilst over KBKL, ~3000 agl, CFI shouts out, drone! I look to where he was pointing, and a silver quad was up right at our altitude, maybe 15 yards off the starboard wing as we flew past it. No time to get scared, though I shudder to think what would have happened had we struck it. Finally, I think killing flying things, even moths, before departure is bad luck. Capture and release would have been better.

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 2 дні тому

      I agree - engine out at night is a nightmare scenario. In my plane, I would be heading for roads in the daytime anyway, as this type of aircraft typically doesn't do well landing in fields. So at nighttime, I would definitely take roads with chances of wires over black holes of unknown. That said, being within gliding distance of an airport trumps all of that, and I am always watching my "nearest" - my G3X definitely helps with that, it automatically shows the closest viable airport in gliding distance at all times. My thought with the moth was "I do not want this flying in my face when I am at a critical phase of flight." Sorry, moth. :)

    Did you ever figure out why the Garmin didn't load? My thoughts (I work in IT) are 1) heat, maybe a failsafe to keep it from working too hard (similar to your iPhone dimming screen when super hot), 2) maybe storage problem (run Spinrite if HDD/SSD), 3) moisture makes sense too.

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 4 дні тому

      According to Garmin, it was the SD card - if I had ejected the SD card, it would have come right up. No idea why it fixed itself (I'm suspecting humidity from days of rain) but it hasn't happened since, and I'm still using the same SD card. The log files written to the SD card while it was having this problem support this diagnosis.

    • @paulstejskal
      @paulstejskal День тому

      @@CanardBoulevard If you can get the SD card to come up in a computer from the BIOS, you might try to Spinrite it. 6.1 is out and it's a really good tool. I'd say do a level 1 to check for errors, and if nothing comes back do a level 3. If not, maybe replace it with a new one.

    This is a great video. I can tell you're not only a good, safe pilot but experienced. Question: how do you check radar on your iPad? I think I saw your cell phone too. Do you get cell reception that high, or are you using something like a Starlink?

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 4 дні тому

      My iPad is connected via Bluetooth to the GDL 39R ADS-B receiver inside the panel. This receives NEXRAD radar, TIS-B and FIS-B information from dedicated ground stations and displays it on my MFD and PFD. It also sends it over Bluetooth to my iPad. Occasionally I'll pick up a cell signal for a couple of minutes if I am flying over a built-up area, and when that happens it can also update then...but primarily it's FIS-B data coming from ground stations.

      Tickets are necessary right now - I was actually turned away. Because a fair amount of the museum is shut down for renovations, they are constantly at capacity, so they instituted a first-come-first-served ticket system. I showed up, saw the huge line, and was told that I needed a ticket (with a specific entry time) to go in, and that they were sold out of tickets for the entire weekend (and that was on a Friday).

    What if the engine fails, how good gliding characteristics does this plane have? Is it possible to land it without crash?

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 5 днів тому

      The Cozy actually has an excellent glide ratio - about 13:1 if the engine is stopped. Compare that to a Cessna 172 which is closer to 8:1. So you can glide quite a bit farther than a Cessna. Can you land it without crashing? That's entirely up to the pilot and his choice of landing area! But yes, it can (and has, many times) been done.

    CAS beep, rebooting avionics, map draw issues, headwind, what distractions! everything about this trip is a good case study for new pilots.. traffic, radio, weather, all the things. realized I've been to GAI when I was learning how to fly in the SFRA. amusingly DC people call it SFRA ("siffruh"), in Los Angeles they call it "special flight rules area". regionalisms.

    Not sure about the Cozy fuel pickups, but on low wing airplanes you never pull fuel from both tanks at the same time. If one tank empties first, the engine will pull air from that side and the fuel from the other tank will not be used. Great video, btw. My Cozy is SO close to flying and these videos encourage me to get it done.

    It can't be correct, surely, to say that there is no prop wash over the wings with a pusher prop? A prop has to draw in exactly the same amount of air from ahead of it as it expels aft of it. On a canard that air is drawn, in part, over the wings. I can think of reasons why a canard may benefit less from prop wash than a conventional aeroplane for rotation, but a complete absence of prop wash is neither realistic nor an explanation.

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 9 днів тому

      On a conventional aircraft, propwash goes over the horizontal tail surfaces and rudder, so you get immediate effect. You can literally raise the noise on a soft field takeoff by pulling back on the yoke and blasting your tail with propwash. This does not happen on a canard. Plus the concentrated, accelerated high-pressure area behind the prop (what we call propwash) is not the same as in front, where some air from a much wider area is accelerated towards the prop, but nowhere near like what happens behind it.

      @@CanardBoulevard So you accept my point that there is prop wash ahead as well as behind the prop, and are effectively saying that the issue is that the forewings are less well located in relation to it than the tailplane of a conventional aeroplane, with which I agree. That the forewings have less distance from the centre of gravity (and hence the elevators have less mechanical advantage) will presumably also contribute to the effect you describe, which I don't doubt for a minute. I stand by what I said before: 'I can think of reasons why a canard may benefit less from prop wash than a conventional aeroplane for rotation, but a complete absence of prop wash is neither realistic nor an explanation.'

    D that mark 4 is sounding good! I almost purchased a Long EZ many years ago. The deal was conditional on the seller buying another plane. His deal fell through and didn’t sell.

    Was curious if you have auto-throttle on your setup. I’m personally leary about using VS mode without an auto-throttle installed on the autopilot. Almost stalled myself out on a go-around once. Anyway, love the videos! Thank you for doing documenting your experiences!

      No, auto throttle is typically found only on much larger, carrier class aircraft (usually turbines). But that is the exact reason I use IAS when climbing, and VS for descending. That said, the GFC autopilot envelope protection will not allow it to come anywhere near to stalling the aircraft no matter what you tell it to do.

    LOTs of Stuff >> I'm watching this for my 2nd time.... lol, why you might ask? I'd tell you I'm trying to learn to fly but the real reason is.. I liked enough to watch it twice. Did you buy this plane & you had all this gear added or was it installed when you purchased her? I ask b/c I see what looks like there was older equipment & that someone decided to update things. It's amazing to see the screens all lit up, that stuff dazzles some of us & it does look great as you fly. Some of the older analog gear is just black & mundane but this gear lights up everything. Back to my 2nd run. peace & thanks for the video, fly safe always

      The avionics you see in this airplane are actually 15-20 years old! The G3X displays came out in 2009, the GNS 530 came out in 2000. I'm planning to actually upgrade all of it.

      Ahh, I still think it looks sharp by contrast to other planes I've looked at. Almost like a video game but I'm guessing when you upgrade it's really going to be a "Video Game" looking setup, but real! Thank you, Sir.

    Be careful to not put the concentrator in an enclosed space. The exhausted N2 can be sucked into the intake and the purity can drop. Also , the sieve beds do eventually wear out even when not used as they adsorb moisture from the air and that deactivates the beds over time. The concentrator should alarm when that happens.

      That area is not actually enclosed, it's open to the rear of the plane, and air flows through there from the front. That's why I chose it.

    You should not have the oxygen concentrator in a enclosed space. The separated N2 can recirculate into the gas intake and the separation efficiency can be affected
