DIY Loft Bed in a Boy's Room Makeover

- My youngest son has the smallest bedroom in the house and he suggested a loft bed as a way to maximize space! I was able to build him a simple bed from budget lumber so that it's sturdy and fun, but also something we can take apart if he ever changes his mind... which is fairly likely since he's 8! I'm using 2x6s, 2x4s and pocket holes to build this. We brought in a paint color from his new wallpaper and sprayed all the pieces in the garage before bringing it up to his room to assemble. I was able to partner with Spoonflower for updated wallpaper, bedding and curtains so the whole room feels new and improved! He loves it and has spent so much time reading or listening to podcasts from his cozy loft bed!

His excitement is so precious! Love the color scheme.
Charlotte! You + Arthur have just gifted my 16 year-old grandson & me a ripping good dream-come-true!
He's lives with me, + has been sleeping on an uncorfortable futon. He has a mattress, but, no frame. He does not want to sleep on the mattress, just on the carpet -- I don't blame him.
This bed design is sturdy, effective, and attractive and you tutored it's build very well. Thank you, to both of you.
So happy to find your channel!!
So bright and fun. He picked out a fun print for sure. Looks great. He was so excited. Thats the best when they are happy. Great build. You make it look easy. Thanks for sharing.
He was so excited! Thanks!
Awww his smile at the end made it all so worth it!! ❤️ good video 👍
Another masterpiece! I am so impressed with your skills at making beds. Arthur is a lucky boy.
He is so happy. So adorable child
This is so cool! He's so excited! 😊 I'm nearly 30 and I'd love to have this in my room. Haha 😂 The colors and patterns look like they can grow with him. 👏
What a fantastic project. You will be inspiring your children x
Love, love, love this! The wallpaper and bedding is stunning!
Awesome job!
The bed and room are perfect!
This is a very helpful video, great job. Do you mind adding a supply list and cut list or plans to the description?
have you figured it out yet bc I’d love to know 😭
He is a Lucky boy
I want that wall paper
The pocket hole method isn't strong enough for attaching the side rails. All of the weight from the person, mattress, etc. will be resting on two screws at each corner. Attaching the rails flush onto the legs with lag bolts or larger screws would be much safer for your son.
Hi! Great job! How much did this cost would you say?
It looks good but it appears that all the weight of the mattress is held by a few pocket hole screws in the side rails. This is not a wise way to hold the weight of a few friends or siblings, especially if someone else is underneath.
I plan on making one for an adult and used this video as a reference, what would you say is otherwise more proper to hold the weight?
@@Mellow_dazed simplest mod would be to add a board (4" width at least) to the inside of each bottom side rail, such that the new board fully overlaps the inside of the post on each side, then glue it to the side rail and screw it to the post, then strengthen each joint with a couple of 3/4" dowels through the new board and the post on each side. Two dowels at each joint should prevent any racking. Essentially you're creating a half-lap joint without doing any chiseling.
Regular half-lap joints at the junction of the bottom side rails and each post is a more elegant solution, but would add to the difficulty of the build. Not by much though.
@@Mellow_dazed carriage or lag bolts
Since you dont have a boxspring under that mattress PLEASEE either get one or switch to bunkie boards!! Mattresses can harbor bacteria and grow mold without proper ventilation!
Wood glue is stronger than the wood itself. The Screws will snap if there is jumping on the bed I have seen you reply to other comments about a survey it's not worth the risk for the sake of avoiding having to cut up bedframe in the future. This is an awesome idea but research how pocket screws can snap stay safe
This is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Supporting the entire weight of everything is 4 pocket screws in pine?!? This is borderline child abuse.
Untrue: "According to a study conducted by the RADCO testing division, a common 90-degree pocket hole joint using a 2x4 rail that is attached to a 4x4 post could hold 1361 Ibs before failing. However, using the same setup, if you apply pressure from the bottom of 2x4, the same side as the holes, this 2x4 holds only 410 Ibs." And there are 16+.
People. DON'T FOLLOW THIS VIDEO TO MAKE A BED. IT IS DANGEROUS!
I really hope she has changed how she attached the side rails. Please give an update.
