2 YEAR UPDATE: It's been 25 months since I PlastiDipped the chrome on my truck. It's holding up amazingly well in most places and so-so in others. The front grill took the brunt of the damage from bugs, rocks and more but still looks pretty good. The handles have slowly been peeling back, since I wasn't able to reach the insides of them, but they're still holding on well. The badges on the side look perfect, as do the side mirror housings. I'd say it's either time now, or maybe in the next six months to peel the grill/bumper area and reapply. It has holes peppered throughout ranging from pin prick holes to small pebble sized, probably all from rocks hitting it. I've got this truck listed for sale right now so I won't have any more updates but overall I'm super impressed with how it came out as well as how well the PlastiDip held up - especially for a rattle can application! I'd do it again for sure, and probably will.
Hey mate, did you end up peeling it now? Curious to know if the third-party enamel would have caused it to flake in tiny pieces making the removal a real pain as I've seen in other videos
Thanks for the update! I was just thinking about sending you a question about durability. I have the same grill on my 2017 Tundra, 1794 edition; and I've been looking at options. One of the knocks against PlastiDip is that it gets pocked full of holes--especially on leading edges (esp. grills and bumpers) due rocks, sand, bugs, etc. I was hoping your final layer of enamel would increase the durability; but it appears it only made a slight difference. I'm likely going to buy something aftermarket; or possibly paint my grill (sand, self-etching primer, enamel paint). We'll see....
This was a great video. My only suggestion is that if you can remove the part you’re dipping, then do so. It makes it easier to dip at getting all angles and limit your overspray than when the part is connected(rims, trim pieces etc).
Looks great in the beauty shots! Nice job. How does it stand up to heat from the sun, washing, going through an automated car wash, road wear with debris, etc.?
I just drove it today and there's not much to report, fortunately. Everything is like the day I put it in. Wireless CarPlay works great and is my favorite feature, all features are doing what they should. I'm loving it and would highly recommend it.
@@Featured_YT Haha! So sorry. I thought your comment was on my video about replacing the stereo. My bad. For the paint, we're coming up on two years now and here's the update: There are several small holes in the front bumper, the part that gets the most abuse with bugs, rocks and such hitting it. The door handles that I did a better job on still look and work great. One of them I didn't do as good of a job on getting back behind it a bit and it's peeling. The mirrors look great and the emblems look great too. I've heard that around 2-3 years they start breaking down so we'll see but even if it started coming off tomorrow I'd say it's worth it. One night worth of work for two + years of a nice new color is great with me.
Great work on the grill. I actually kept my Tundra's grill chrome'd out since it flows with the color of my Tundra but I do love seeing a Black on Black Tundra. BTW, congratulations on the purchase.
What happens if too much peels off and takes chunks off where you don't want it to? Do you have to take all the plasti dip off and redo the whole section?
You would, yes. But this stuff holds on quite aggressively. It’s still on that truck years later. The grill is looking a bit hammered due to bugs and debris so it’s probably time to redo it but doesn’t peel off in big sections ever.
Overall it's looking great. There are, however, a few small holes where either rocks have hit it or maybe it's from something else but if you look close you can see the holes. These are tiny, like smaller than a pebble, so nothing too bad. I'd totally do this again and probably will when this one starts to wear.
@@deestrings8552 Thanks so much. No, no issues at all two years in. I'm actually selling the truck right now so I won't know past this but so far so great!
@johndeaux9987 it will hold up if your apply it right and let it cure before washing. I've had mine on for 3 years. I just use dedicated dipyourcar stuff but have taken it through carwashes and it's held up
You can cut it with a sharp blade at the seems but usually the gap is big enough that the PlastiDip doesn’t actually bridge the gap. I didn’t need to do anything on mine.
It’s doing pretty good in general but definitely not perfect. The grill has tiny holes in it in a few places where rocks or bugs have hit it and maybe corrosion has occurred. The emblems on the side look perfect and the door handles have done great. Side mirrors look really good too. I think the grill is just a highly vulnerable area so it has taken the lion’s share of the wear.
@@LRN2DIY awesome and thanks so much for the feedback, I think the bumpers are going to suffer the most because the location and the vulnerability, I was expecting that, so for me it’s a save money project so it’s a go for me with the plastidip
Ok, so here’s my dilemma. I have wanted to do this for a while, thank you for the video!! But I also like to use automatic car washes. Does anyone have some insite into how the brushes will tear up this on the grill of my tundra?
It’s meant to be peeled off, power washers will easily take it off so no brushes. Go watch Doughnut Media’s latest video for how it’s supposed to be done. It’s not this easy, the dude skipped like 3 steps.
Depending on where you use it, it can last years. The PlastiDip on my truck grill has some holes in it and probably needs some touchup at this point (almost two years in - especially where it's such a large flat grill) but the car I painted with it was holding up beautifully 18 months along until we had to get rid of the car because it was totalled.
How often do you have to redo this? Plastidip isn't the most durable stuff and I imagine with washing and being exposed to sun and rain this would start to peel eventually.
Yes, it will have to be redone or removed at some point. Everyone's results seem to vary but anywhere from 1-3 years is what I'm seeing. The chrome underneath is in great shape so removing it won't be a bad thing when the time comes.
So to review, you sprayed solvent rubber into your engine bay which is super flammable while not wearing any protection so that the rubber particles also got all up in your lungs and it still looks like crap up close. There’s good DIY and there’s bad DIY, this is the latter. Enjoy the future engine fire bud.
B Shea Dylan likes to do thing the right way so the engine doesn’t catch on fire. It’s ok, your country won’t be around long enough for it to matter, its doing things the wrong way that got you were you are now.
He sprayed right into the radiator, maybe even past it into the engine bay. Could have prevented it with cardboard or aluminum foil in front of the radiator...

Tip #1 is definitely huge bonus. I’ve been using the same spray trigger for so many projects I never realize I’m getting half the power! Thank you.

Awesome job!, so much chrome so much front end! great tips, Thanks. I'm doing my grill tomorrow.
It looked nice when it was mat, right before you turned it glossy, just my opinion--Great video
*matte
mat💀
I agree. Looks much gooder
I was going to say the same thing. I don't like anything gloss though.
Looks great in the beauty shots! Nice job. How does it stand up to heat from the sun, washing, going through an automated car wash, road wear with debris, etc.?
Great video! I appreciated the quick time lapse between the coats showing the difference. I'm not sure why anyone would dislike the video.
How many cans do you need to complete the entire bumper?
I like what you did with the paint 🎨 🖌️
I am going to do my truck with the steps you listed. However there is a video on removing the door handles so I will go that route.
I've been looking for a video like yours. I don't like chrome either. I have a 2016 tundra
Should you do anything else if you choose matte? Like some type of protection spray or w/e.
AWESOME DUDE
Looks great!
Next time pull tape as soon as you r done and retape on every coat no pull on wet paint and can correct any imperfections
Good video though
Did it harm your radiator?
great video. thank you
If you’re using engine enamel you might as well just use regular paint. Defeats the purpose of using plastic dip.
May I ask how many cans did you have to use for this specific video on the matte black?
Can I do this to my rims?
Absolutely. We're actually doing this on the rims of a car this week and that's one of the more popular uses of plastidip.
Rob Fern You sure can. If you can remove the rim/tire from the vehicle it will be easier. 1 can per rim for coverage and peelability.
Can you do a update video on how it held up this past year please

How long do you wait to put on the glossifier after your last coat of Plasti Dip?
I think I have the same black color tundra. What color plastidip did you use?
So how long does that paint job on that front of your tundra last?
Your are not suppose to put any clear coat on Plasti - Dip because it makes it harder to peel off
Anything bad happen since you sprayed radiator?
cougtime No, the way we angled it around the front bumper made it so that very little went toward the radiator. Just a bit of overspray.
@@LRN2DIY sounds good. Thanks for the reply
I did plastidip on my Tahoe grill and it lasted for years
How many cans did you use?
I used 3 Cans of Plasti Dip on this (for a matte finish), then 2 cans of Glossifier (optional), plus one can of Enamel Gloss.

It was brutal seeing you not sand it first 😢 otherwise, your video making style is nice and to the point 👍
Your only to spray a sealant..clearcoat wont work
Siiicccckkkkk!!!!!!
How many cans of plasti dip did it take to do this?
All of the quantities are listed in the description. It was 3 cans of black PlastiDip.
The last coat of gloss completely defeats the purpose of using dip
