I still take to heart what Queen Mary said. Many of us who watch the Crown are not Royals but we are all trying to maintain our own family values and traditions for the survival of our own family, in spite of the world influences good or bad. And one thing I realized about what queen Mary said was you have to look past the good and the bad and you have to look at what is the most pragmatic and rational thing to do so that we all can carry on our own family, legacies and wealth both financial and knowledge wise.

After witnessing that scene, I informed a friend that it might be crucial to comprehend Her Majesty's internal restrictions and, at the very least, her desire for a private life with her own open opinions. At the moment when King George VI passed away, Princess Elizabeth, along with all heirs, also ceased to exist, a circumstance that endures to this day

The most poignant part of the Queens funeral for me was right at the end at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, just before she was taken away to be buried when the Crown & Sceptre were finally taken off her coffin. She was no longer Queen, she was an historical footnote, and the human remained - Elizabeth Windsor.

A lot of women ask this question of themselves when they’ve spent a lifetime sacrificing who they once were for the benefit of their family (their children, their parents, their siblings or their husband). At the end, we find ourselves looking back, searching the faces of our memory for our own youthful, sparkling eyes….. once we land on them, we instantly smell the same spark of glee that we had when we looked to our horizons as a young woman and we just as instantly realize those dawns are now in a glass box within our hearts. Some of us are lucky enough to release a few glimpses from the box and recapture moments again while in our wisdom years but quite a lot of us steel ourselves, as we’ve always done, brace for the headwinds and lean into our strength to hold her steady. We know who we are. We are the rock that others break themselves upon. We are Matriarchs of our families and our purpose is to hold the light at all costs until the last of our stragglers are in, then and only then, can we close the book!!
Don’t cry for us - we choose this honor and we accept our journey proudly. THAT is what the young Elizabeth is saying!!

Back in the 1980s, I worked with a woman called Jenny. She was old fashioned even then. Very 1950s twin set and wing glasses. A couple of younger women in the office detested her, I think because she was so old fashioned. I always got on fine with her. She had nursed a succession of maiden aunts through the last years of their lives. When the last of them died, it coincided with Jenny's retirement. My supervisor said "At least she can live her own life now".
Unfortunately she had ignored some warning signs with her own health and died a few months later.

But that's growth, isn't it? Growing from hardships, experience and becoming a more mature version of yourself each time. If you're able, you will take a look of past experiences, reevaluate them, take your lessons from them and transform yourself by changing certain attitudes and behaviour. Like shedding one's skin to grow a new thicker one, leaving the past versions of yourself behind. This scene demonstrates it perfectly.
I also like Claire Foy's piercing but rather empty stare she gives to Imelda Staunton at the end, almost robotic as if she became a shallow image of her past self, that was Elizabeth Windsor. Great acting props from both amazing actresses.

She knew since her uncle’s abdication that she was going to be queen unless her parents had a boy. From what I’ve read, she was kind of hoping that they’d have a third child who’d be a boy. And in any case, no one would have known that the king would die young. If he lived to, say, 70-something, Elizabeth would have had a few years to be…relatively normal.

This is what gets me when people say "They have a privileged lifestyle, I wouldn't mind swapping with them".
How many people really would want to grow up being told that no matter what they wanted in life, what job they'd like to do or where they'd like to live, even what furniture to have, it didn't matter. Because one day they'd have to give it all up to have every day mapped out for the rest of their lives, not just to retirement age, but beyond.
I've done miserable jobs where it felt like my life was not my own, one in particular made me very ill, but I was able to get out of them without having to involve Parliament to do so. Most of us have to do exhausting jobs, but not all of us are told that an entire institution rests on us personally and have our every move scrutinised by the world's press.

@@zacmumblethunder7466 Let's be real: British monarchs don't ACTUALLY have the weight of the institution on their shoulders if they are of average intelligence and morals. The person in Britain who TRULY has the weight of the country on their shoulders is the Prime Minister. British monarchs have some of the least stressful jobs as far as heads of state go. They don't have to make political decisions, they don't have to give interviews, they don't have to make off-the-cuff remarks that expose them, they don't have to debate anyone, they don't have to give press conferences, etc. That makes it EXTREMELY difficult to put a foot wrong; no one even knows who they are as people find fault in them - because everything they do is rehearsed and planned. That's the whole purpose of the "mystique" of monarchy. Now, an American president - THERE is a head of state that truly has the weight of the world and institutions on their shoulders. There is a reason American presidents go into their first terms looking young and spritely, but have visibly aged 30 years at the end of their four years.
The British monarchy is an old institution in which many things that monarchs do are already pre-determined and set in stone. For most things that the Queen was seen in public doing, there was a blueprint, and it was rehearsed. It's the prime minister whose day-to-day can be unpredictable due to the nature of world events. It's the prime minister who can easily put a foot wrong because he/she doesn't have the benefit of having everything rehearsed. Most of the Queen's crises have involved her own family dramas, not external dramas that were placed on her plate to deal with. I'm not sure why you think her job or life position is to be envied over other things that other people have to deal with.

    • @anyaw340
      @anyaw340 9 місяців тому +4

@@zacmumblethunder7466 Secondly, very few people in life are privileged enough to be doing exactly what they want to do - mostly because they lack resources or time - so this isn't unique to the monarch by a long shot. People give up what they WANT to do literally all the time, and for many different reasons. Also, have you ever thought how many people WISH their lives could be as predictable and planned as hers was? However, because so many people lack financial and physical security, they don't have the luxury of knowing what's going to happen to them in 24 hours, let alone 24 years - like the Queen did. Perspective is needed here.
And while it's true that regular people don't have the added pressure of the world watching their every move, it's also true that no one HAS to take on that role. She had the luxury of stepping away and still being financially okay. How many other people can say that in this world? That they could quit their jobs today and still be okay? And how many people can say that they have a guaranteed job for life? Again, I'm sorry, but I would take the struggles of a monarch over the struggles of a regular person any day. Her struggles involve emotional turmoil involving dissatisfaction with life, which we ALL experience for many different reasons. She doesn't have the additional added pressures of survival and security.

@anyaw340 The Queen could not step away from the job. When her uncle abdicated it was a constitutional crisis. People think that just means "Oh, we nearly lost the monarchy, so what?" But it was a time of great social upheaval, only ten years since the chaos of the general strike, and during the time of the hunger marches. The generation that had lived through the First World War were wondering what the sacrifices had been for and were aware that another war was imminent. George VI and Elizabeth knew it was their duty to represent stability and continuity. Losing the monarchy would probably have led to conflict and bloodshed given the inadequacies of the government of the day.
And having sworn at 21 years old to serve the people for all her life, she would not step away from that as most of her generation would not break a promise.
Of course I know that ordinary people can have terrible lives, in my working life I dealt with people whose circumstances were apalling.
If you read up about the Monarch's constitutional duties, you'll see that it's not just opening some things and launching others. It's better to research it than take what is shown in the glorified soap opera "The Crown" as fact.

Yes, I think she and Phillip initially thought they’d be able to raise their children as a relatively normal family - in the same way Elizabeth remembered before her uncle abdicated. It’s sad really, what they all sacrificed.

I am so overwhelmed with the acting. It doesn't feel like I am watching people doing parts. It feels like I am the fly on the wall watching real people living real lives. The British actors are absolutely fantastic. There aren't any descriptive words in the English language to convey the respect I have for these actors. When the either the Queen or Head of Hogworts, her acting is superb. She has well developed skills to keep you absolutely engrossed in HER. I don't know her name, which is a shame, but l will find out and remember so that I can search for her in other movies and programs.
