- No Irrigation? No Problem!
If you’re like most people then you probably don’t have a professional in ground irrigation system installed on your property. I've tried almost every lawn sprinkler on the market in order to properly irrigate my lawn and none of them seemed to work right. Eventually I built a custom DIY above ground irrigation system but it still had its flaws and never seemed to stop leaking. Finally we have a professional DIY above ground irrigation system available to us DIYers.
In this video, we cover the first ever professional DIY above ground sprinkler system in existence.
Hunter Irrigation just released a DIY above ground irrigation system called the MP Stake. Designed for use with the MP Rotator nozzle, the MP Stake comes preassembled and includes a check valve and pressure regulator to ensure slow and even watering. This DIY Sprinkler system is the absolute best way to irrigate without having a professional sub-surfaced irrigation system.
The best part about this irrigation system is it uses the MP Rotator nozzles which are the gold standard in the irrigation world. The MP Rotator uses multi trajectory rotating stream that helps you save on water. Rather than simply spray water onto your lawn, MP Rotators deliver multiple streams of water at a consistent rate. This slower application rate allows water to gently soak into the soil and achieves an even distribution throughout the area being irrigated. The Mp rotators use 30% less water when compared to traditional sprays which will lead to less run off of the water. Ive been using the Mp rotators on my existing DIY build and am super excited to see hunter come up with this dedicated DIY solution.

Can i replace my old Hunter sprinkler heads with the new MP heads. it's underground Hunter system and works great though. I bought a new X-core controller for it.
No disrespect.. but for anyone who is concerned enough about their lawn to even be considering an irrigation system, overall this would just be a waste of time and money not to mention aggravation. Now if your looking for a temporary solution that's only going to be used under special circumstances OR your just broke & handicapped then maybe ok for you. Also, anyone who's in the service side of the business knows these MP rotators only look good on paper, in the real world they never go the distance. On sloped grades they have there place but still fail way to much, so do the krains, so do the Toros, the rainbirds are slightly more trustworthy. If your lawn is small and isn't concrete hard and your physically capable, you can install a much better official in-ground system by hand using hose bibs, 1/2" poly pipe and a 10" Wilton slit tool, obviously you must zone the system and head count based on volume available.
I bought one MP-Stake kit to test. I don't know 'scientifically' if the lawn got a better watering, but sure worked better than the other endless big box stores' leaking-rusting-non-working sprinklers. Will buy some more and see if in one year my crabgrass looks healthier LOL.
Kevin from Hunter Industries seems to really have his act together. Almost military precision in his appearance and presentation. Great job!

That dude has to be ex military haha.
I don’t see the difference between this product and a normal run of the mill sprinkler. Your still using hose that would need to be moved when mowing and moved to prevent leaving a burn Mark on the lawn from the hose if left in place when not in use. Also your not going to be able to attached more than probably two of those sprinklers off one hose line. You need to account for length and size of hose along with water pressure in order for more than one of those sprinklers to cover properly in order for it to work like an underground system works. Seems like fluff to me. Installing an underground system is an easy diy job if you put a little effort into it. Just my opinion.
Water pressure, flow rate, hose length and whether such a setup would be able to sustain more than two units at once also came to mind as I watched this. If I'm limited to 2 units based on available water pressure and flow and I follow the recommendation that both spray back at each other, then the largest area I can cover at a time is 30 square feet. That requires moving both units and hose multiple times to cover my roughly 4,000 sq ft lawn. That's simple enough to do, but it's not quite the "set it and forget it” solution presented. No shade, simple truth.
Since you mentioned it, do you recommend any specific resources online or off to reference/consult for installing sprinklers myself?
Sounds like you could learn a bit more about pressure regulated sprinkler heads. I've set up many systems and they work great if designed properly. Yes, they have more than 2 heads. We have 20 gallons a minute flow with plenty of pressure where I live. Some simple math will yield a viable set up.
@@LemonySnicket-EUC lol. I have installed a few irrigation systems in my time. I know exactly what needs to be figured. That was the point of my comment.
I agree. Waste of time.
@@aroundthehousewithpat31 I didn’t mine also. But I did it as a temporary solution at my new construction house. 🤣🤣🤣 I set up 6 Rainbird 5000’s with the 3.0 tip, got my placement using regular spikes, and then used old hoses I already had and buried everything. 6 heads covering about 11,000 square feet with a 5’-8’ overlap. Each head is it’s own zone and running a 4 zone timer from the front of the house and a 2 zone running from the back of the house to my side yard. With the timers I might have $350 into it. 🤣🤣🤣 My neighbors who’ve spent thousands were like “Wtf are you doing”

I'm all for people putting out new products, but you don't have to trash other options in the process. I ran the Ryan Knorr MP rotator setup on stakes last year. The system worked flawless, didn't leak at all, and cost a lot less than the MP stake kits. Best of all, I was able to reuse the heads and nozzles when I installed underground irrigation this year.
people on the Lawnsite were running that set up 10 years before his video so by no means is this trashing his product

Nice video George. Definitely a step up for the DIY irrigation game. Good job on putting a kit together to make it a turnkey solution. 👍😎
Thanks Ron super excited to pioneer this solution
Looks like a pain to setup and more complicated than it needs to be. And the expense is nearly the part cost for a sprinkler system if you do the digging yourself. Similar battery operated valves don't last more than a season from my experience. But most important is you need to zone out your lot since you can only run a few sprinklers at a time. Better to just get a standard zone timer for $40, sprinker heads, pipe, and do some digging.
In most applications I would agree. However this system is modular and mobile, so that’s an advantage in certain situations such as mine
you need a hammer arrestor between the valve and the timer, otherwise the bluetooth ones do fail more quickly due to the surge of sudden stops and starts.
so every time i cut the grass, i take it all down. then reassemble. then re-align the rotators. no thanks.

Great video. As a DIY guy 😂 I can’t help myself. I just built 10 Rainbird 1800’s with the 360 rotator heads for a total of $5.18 each a couple weekends ago. With average water psi I can run up to 5 at a time from 1 hose. I also took an old 100ft hose and converted it into 10ft hoses. I haven’t seen the price of these but I’m doubting they come close to that. Getting Excellent coverage
Us DIY folks are OCD af. Especially if it works as good or better than store bought AND we can do it at a fraction of the cost.
I also built my own in-ground with 6 Rainbird 5000’s easily covering Over 10,000 square feet with garden hoses a 4 zone and 2 zone timers for barely $350. Works pretty damn good.
Wow how long did it take and is it above ground? what is a good 4 or 2 zone timer TIA
.....but.....you have to have city water pressure level, or one big kick ass well pump!
I just recieved 8 mp stakes. I have used 6 mp3000 and 2 mp2000. My water pressure from the spigot is 40 PSI (municipal PSI is terrible, I don't even have a pressure valve on main supply). My max gpm is 5.5. I am able to run 3 mp3000 per zone. They throw water about 20 feet. I am super impressed. Thank you for the introduction to the product. My front yard reno thanks you. -Cory from Cental Illinois
I’ve been in the lawn sprinkler business for over 30 years. I’ll be honest I only made it 3 minutes into this video. I was just torn between “do it yourself, or do it right” type of mentality. As a home owner and a rental property owner I think I can confidently distinguish between “form vs. function”. Yes it works … but it seems like this is a solution for someone who’s time isn’t as valuable as I would consider mine. Just think I’m the long run it’s worth getting a system installed professionally and doing the minimal maintenance.
I thought that Hunter rep was Armin Shimerman for a hot minute. The way he looked dead into the camera, it was slightly terrifying, yet intriguing.
I don't understand how this is better than using standard underground sprinkler parts available at a low price with wide variety and high quality everywhere. It's a lot more expensive, fragile, and more difficult to service though so I guess there's that.
Im not really sure how this is different than what Ryan Knorr or others have set up in the past.. What am I missing? Are you meant to leave this staked in the ground and hoses ran at all times?
He's late to the party.

Barely getting into the home stuff but we're learning a lot as I go this seems like a lot more of a DIY project than say you know irrigating your whole sprinkler system yourself and digging up your lawn now if this is something you wanted to do for a permanent fix how would you go about setting it up I know garden hose probably isn't the best for long-term pressurized use on a timer like that what would you use to permanent above ground or permanent use of that pressure without any leaks for the future from the garden hose and taking up a spigot
For myself that knows practically nothing about sprinklers, when I go to web site, shop for heads, lingo is above me. It would be so helpful for others like me to show the sprinkler head and how it sprays. This would include bubblers also.
Water distribution is a serious matter and this guy gets it.

Glad to hear 😃
This is simply outstanding. Thanks George. Super helpful...especially with the fall season just around the corner.

Does best with city water pressure. I have a well and live in the countryside here in Michigan. My well water pressure is maximum 60psi. The units are humming in there at about 25 ft. But...if someone flushes, or washing machine operating and the streams come out about 3 ft. Also, don't use contractible hose! When it empties, it will collapse and pull your stake out! The Hunter 100 doesn't have an ON button, it does have an OFF but you cannot turn it on or off manually except to go out to the unit and shut it off manually. Beats the reason for a remote eh? Otherwise, its really cool. All the neighbors comin' over to check it out.
Those first few seconds of Kevin onscreen where he's standing with George and I'm thinking I'd rather take my chances kicking Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the crotch than mess with this guy! ;-)
my last house I installed the MP rotors, the best ever in my opinion, maybe a little expensive for the heads but work great.

I've preferred Hunter over Orbit for sprinklers lately, but their plastic all-in-one valve timers won't last nearly as long as a timer and valve body setup. I've used the combo units on rental properties and had them crack and leak after 2-3 years, where the in-ground valves hold up much longer. I have yet to find a timer I like more than the Rain Bird that has run about ten years. I don't even think they make them that good anymore. Tempted to build and program my own.
I’ve used these nozzles a lot there very easy to use. Easy to adjust didn’t know about the Bluetooth app but I do know u can add a WiFi module to ur compatible irrigation controller and can use it with ur phone. Nozzles have been out for a few years now 👍👍👍 I have installed a lot of irrigation systems around Charlotte nc 👍👍🇺🇸👍

Great video, thanks for sharing. I will check out the sprinklers. I have a question, have you had a chance to use them if yes what is the comparison of your old water bill or last month compared to this one. If it can save me money and water and get better results that would be a game changer. Thanks
Thanks eric! The amount of water does not change but the application rate is much slower (.40in per hour) Average soil absorbs water at a max of .50in per hour and most other sprinklers apply much more water than that per hour. So by using this system you can maximize the amount of water your lawn will absorb which will ultimately allow you to not apply so much water and wasting it due to run off
@@PrincessCutLawnCare thanks so much for the information, I'm going to look for into it pricing and how many I would need for coverage.

Kevin was definitely in the military. And most likely in some sort of instructor position. If I had to guess, Marine drill sergeant.
I like the DYI comment not respecting people trying to do stuff themselves knowing nothing about what they are doing
Question about distance (at about 4:40). If they throw 25' and you put them 25' apart, isn't that 100% overlap or double coverage? Am I understanding this correctly?
Works great! But not with my well pump. Live in country and have a well. Had thoughts of water gently sprinkleing on my lawn....it does , but it only has enough pressure to push it out a few feet. Any ideas would be appreciated.
I got frustrated with those mp heads. They kept quitting spinning after just a few weeks. We were using city water so it wasnt getting any gunk in it. I have no idea why they kept failing. I switched to rainbird oscillating heads. Do you have any idea why these would fail like that?
What's your at head pressure?
What type of water are you running through them?
Being that this needs 40psi to operate, how many splitters could I use from 1 main spigot? Is it just the 2 shown in your video, or would I need to run a hose from another spigot to the other side of my yard?
Hey R - great question. The MP Rotator can operate down to 25psi (per Hunter's performance data). The 40psi reducer is to lower the pressure, should you have 40-60psi, etc. You will lose pressure due to "friction loss through your hose" - and with just 2 MPs you will likely lose 2-5psi for every 100LF of 5/8" garden hose. Hope that helps!
Yeah, it's gonna be in the way of mowing. There's sprinklers out there that'll do a 30' circle. I have a wire trojan fence. I have my garden hose zip-tied to a fence right after I weed whacked a ditch. After the grass grows back, you don't see the hose. Never snagged it with my mower. I have several Y connectors inline at each corner. I can use only a 25 foot hose and sprinkle about anywhere in the yard. 🐀🐾

I'll never understand how circular patterns are efficient for square lawns, or how you get even coverage when the sprays are spraying a set distance and drawing circles in the lawn. I’ve used these. Cheap plastic gear driven sprinklers that don’t last because the plastic gears get torn up by sand particles. Your always better off with metal impact heads.
You shouldn't have sand in your water. Filter it out first. Obviously sediment isn't going to be good for your sprinklers or your household fixtures. I've used Hunter sprinklers of all kinds for years and had no problems at all. But then, I knew what I was doing!
how long does it have to run before you could measure 1/2 inch or 1 inch of rain?
If they are laid out in head to head coverage the application rate is .4 -.5 inches per hour

How many of these can you string together and still get good flow?
Depends on your water output most can do 2., we can do 3
Thanks for making a video haven't heard much from you this summer
Been a busy summer, happy to be back.
Thanks for stoppin by!
You said the head maintains 40psi. Does this help if you have low water pressure to run more than one sprinkler? Or would you still need a booster pump? Thanks!
It depends on how low of pressure and how many heads you want to run
The 40psi pressure regulator can only reduce pressure, if you have 35psi, the pressure regulator will be a passthrough, and not functional. To help decrease pressure loss, you can increase the size of your hose, decrease the hose length, loop the hose, or decrease the flow rate of each nozzle. MP Rotator are very low flow rate (0.75gpm avg) so you'll have an advantage over traditional sprinklers.
Thanks for the feedback.
So I like this idea, but I want I-20 sprinkler heads. Can this be modified for the other sprinkler heads?
I was given enough 2"x20' scheduled 80. If I wanted to run that above ground along the fence line, would that act as a manifold? Would it work?
Where I live u can’t use a filter as the stuff in the irrigation water it plugs in 2 days. So u remove the filter and away u go. The stuff in the water passes thru the nozzle. Can u remove urs without any problem ?
The biggest problem I’ve had with rotary sprinklers of all kinds is they get clogged all the time. They only work with distilled water.
Yeah, we have well water and the mineral buildup is a challenge. I need to use impact heads for that reason. They each take more water per minute, which means I need more valves and more zones to cover the same space. I'd rather use 3-4 smaller non-impact versions (1-2 GPM) but have to go with 1 larger impact unit (3-4 GPM) instead. All because of the hard water.
Not true. They work fine with my moderately hard water. Yours must be phenomenally hard to be giving you trouble, in which case you need a water softener.
@@paulmaxwell8851 Salt-based softeners kill a lot of landscaping, and would use a lot of salt. I had a softener, and it was not plumbed to feed exterior hoses, landscaping, etc. for that reason.
Mineral build up is a real issue, and the tiny orifices on many spray heads will clog within a season. You'd be surprised how quick it happens when the temps go up.

Hunter are the best sprinklers hands down
Slick stuff. I have in-ground irrigation, but I've considered moving away from my orbit sprinklers to a pressure-regulated head. ill have to look into these more.
Sweet!
BTT, seems great! Do they make multiple head versions?
How many you can run depends on your visit lune and pressure of water you have at your home. You should be able to run 3 at a time no problem unless your water pressure is very low.
