I DIY'd mine 2 years ago with a trencher and yes it was a ton of work, 80% of the job was actually filling the trench back in. Managed to do it all in 4 days and I get far less overspray on my driveway, sidewalks and patio than my neighbors' professionally installed systems thanks to my MP Rotators.
I also did mine myself when I was 65 in Florida in August. Sweating like a whore in church. Also dug my own irrigation well. I now have the best lawn in the sub division. Home owners association sent me letters about how great my lawn looks. So you young guys save your money and do it yourself, just not in the hot weather.
I installed this exact same system myself as a DIY on a 10k sq ft yard last fall. It was definitely a lot of work and took a lot of planning. I installed almost 80 heads, and had to tunnel under sidewalk 5 times since i have a corner lot, and need to get into the easement. Heck I was able water my entire easement with ~20 side stripe heads on a single zone, yea i have a large corner lot! It so awesome, and I don't think you can do that with traditional short range spray nozzle, but I could be wrong. I learned to use a trencher, and it took more time backfilling the trenches. I saved myself almost 5K!! It is definitely a lot of work, and it took about 5 full days to install 8 zones, and rough in 2 additional zones for landscape irrigation. After it is all said and done, MP Rotators and their Hydrowise are the way to go. I can tell a big difference between my lawn and my neighbors who have traditional spray nozzles. I only water my lawn 5 times a week, and it every sq ft of the lawn get no more than 1" of watering a week. Plus the controller can monitor how much rain I received at my house to alter the water schedule. I am thinking of creating a video tutorial or my process. It includes the planning, such as how to zone using Hunters provided documents, and installation process using poly tubing since I documented every step I did for future reference. This is pretty much my exact setup: mprotators with the hydrawise controller (my installers thought I was nuts when I asked for them since you need a lot more heads for full coverage). Only thing I wish my installer did was give me 6” popups in certain areas since I mow tall at 4” most of the year. In certain sloped areas, the head barely gets out over the grass especially when it’s overgrown. Something to consider if you have sloped areas or mow tall!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare in certain areas I may make them swap them out but I finally got the lawn back to what it was prior to install so I’d hate to tear up some of turf again. Even though they used the same machine as your installation, it still left divots that I had to level out alone with reseeding certain areas. Minimal damage compared to trenching but definitely still needed work after they left…
Amazing job fellas, im a Irrigation Technician myself and the install looks phenomenal. The only thing I'm not really a fan of is the Poly-Pipe for the main an zone lines. Thanks for the video. I have the Hunter PRS bodies and MP rotators, only 18 months since install and two MP rotators do not turn automatically anymore and need a manual turn to get them going. The supplier replaced both for free, but it took a lot of discussion back and forth before they would accept the return. Citing reasons like, my pressure is low (no), clean the units they must be dirty (that was my first step), you have hard water (well who doesn't), these are designed to work flawlessly (no). They work great and I love them, but be aware, you will have issues with the MP rotators at some point and they will need replacement. Easy and cheap to do, but not without fault. The coverage they provide is excellent.
Excellent video! I just had my irrigation system installed last year and I love it! They installed mostly rain bird RVAN nozzles but after a year most of them stopped rotating so I switched out all my nozzles to the mp rotators and it’s been perfect since then!

With the online websites available to help the DIYer, this is really not that difficult of a job as they state. This is a big sales pitch but still a great informative video. There are several website you can upload your house and lot layouts that you have drawn out of use Google Maps for an aerial view of your house and take a snapshot. Upload and you can plan the entire system out with zones etc. Now be sure to check with local laws etc for permits etc but yes it's usually true you need a plumber to get the plumbing part done but it's not thousands of dollars for the install. There are so many websites to help you out and get the job done yourself and done right. Now don't get me wrong, the Pros do a great job and have lots of experience but one can do it yourself with planning because that's what your paying for with a Professional installation. Heck I currently use my backyard faucet with a 3 way timer splitter and it works great! Do what works for you!
We got this done at are house we bought all these parts and some fancy wiring stuff to control the sprinklers to are phone we did it the trenches way we got it done saved us a lot of money but it was definitely a headache because we used UA-cam and weren’t verified on this but it turned out great and we have a sprinkler system you would think was installed by professionals
you mentioned the risers come in various lengths. when, under what conditions would you use a taller riser. sometimes as my grass grows the riser spray hits the grass when spraying??!! Larry
Hey George great video & info, but this is a new install..how about replacing existing nozzels with MP rotators, how to do it, instructions or contraindications..will this be as easy as replacing the nozzels or thre is more to it..your advise will be much appreciated
I installed my whole system myself, even digging the well cause I didn’t want to run off the municipality’s water. Yes it’s a lot of work but it’s perfect and what I wayer
that is the best timer on the market, congratulations on getting an awesome irrigation system. I love using my timer to water when the yard needs it. I personally have a well so all I have to pay for is the electric which is very nice.
Great video. I paid 13K to have our sprinkler system installed a few years ago and I told the guy that all I care about was to have good coverage. Needless to say I got the complete opposite. I’ve got zones with 12 to 14 heads on them which is WAAY to many. As a lawn care nut, it’s one of the biggest stresses in my life.
If you don't already have them, swap out to mp rotators. Their low flow can handle that many heads on a zone provided you have 1" lines and decent pressure.
1 zone can go up to 100 IF you have strong water flow called GPM ( gallons per minute). For example: if you have 20 GPM, then 1 sprinkler used 1 gpm. You can use up to 20 sprinkler. Most of RVan is the kind of rotary nozzle have use 1 or less. So basically check your water pressure, use rotary nozzle like the video you will have good system.
An MP-Rotator system isn't trivial to install. There are a lot of different heads. Mapping the locations and distances accurately is critical. But well worth it. I've done 3 systems in the family and the results are excellent. Never mind the physical labor, which is the same regardless of which underground head system is use.
So many cool irrigation heads out now. I have a combo of rotators and traditional heads, mistake I made was not doing a dedicated park strip zone but overall works great. Utility company ran some electric this spring and cut one of my laterals so J have a zine out but plan to repair this week. Be well!
I enjoy what I do for a living and blessed to get to work with George, really having fun with the entire process. I was born into the industry (literally) and the in's and outs of irrigation is not well know so I get excited to share information. I'm passionate & enthusiastic and life is too short not to live it with a little flare.
@kevin battistoni , your presentational skills are inspiring, not just for any product specialist, but for anyone who enjoys life more when they just let loose a little bit! Hope you are progressing well with your own channel, you deserve the exposure.
I did DIY using a regular hose, flexible pipe to connect sprinkler heads and MP rotators then each “zone” hooked up on a Orbit B-Hyve timer. Since I’m using normal pressure coming out of the house, I could only connect 3-4 heads per “zone”. I dug by hand using a shovel (huge pain) but at least it is “in ground” now.
@@kevinbattistoni5960 depends. I did professional install in my new build that’s currently building. this is solely because the real estate market in that area prefers it. (Almost every house has it.) If the local market didn’t care for it (ie. there is little to no ROI in home value for installing professional in-ground sprinklers), I would still do DIY.
You lucked out, man! These guys know exactly what they are doing. When I worked on water wells I came across many landscapers and plumbers and I’m telling you this guy is the real deal. Awesome system! Wish I had guys like that in my area!
Damn ours was put in in the late 90's tech for irrigation has gotten way better since then obviously. Kinda wish I could redo my whole yard and get that installed 😂
Very nice. I saw your video last year with Kevin talking about the MP rotators and I've been wanting to make the transition. I have a mixture of various Rain Bird and Nelson heads now, but I really want to replace them all with the MP and the pressure regulated body. I'm thinking I'll just do one zone at a time, because I have 35-40 heads over 8 zones, so it would be a lot of work to do all at once! Congrats on the new setup, I'm sure you'll love it!
Very nice! I'm sure you are excited George! Enjoy that system! Installed my own system years ago, it's a nice weekend project if you have nice weather..
My last house I paid for a professional install, my current house put in a full 12 zone system myself, 0 issues. The professional one, multiple leaks, heads not dialed in, and a messing looking wiring in the valve box. My install super clean valve box, all wiring in conduit, added surface shutoff, filter, pressure gauge and blow out connection. I think this guy is overselling the professional work being labor intensive lol. One of the easier jobs I have done.
Man!!!!!.... Kevin's' the BOSS. I thought he was just being funny at first, but then I realized that he IS funny, and also KNOWS HIS SHIT. Awesome video man, thanks.

RB is good competition but I respectfully disagree with your statement especially when they don't even manufacture a remote and we have been remote ready and manufacturing since 1996. Some people like Ford and other like Chevy. To each there own. Thank you for engaging in the content!
what happens in winter when freezing comes to the water trapped in the check valves? do you need to evacuate the water with air pressure? how does that work without an air compressor?
Yes, the system will go through what we call the winterization process. Will shoot the process and put it out in George's channel this fall, stay tuned.
This Kevin dude with his teal Jordan's, one piece jumpsuit , violet shades and body stances seems like a character out of some script lol but knows his trade.
Happy for you to get a new system!! I on the other hand will still be pulling hoses all over the yard. I have 6500 sq ft just in the front yard. I've looked into it but stopped when the price was getting way to high for me and that was doing the work myself. Now after seeing your video I may just forget it. I installed my whole system myself, even digging the well cause I didn’t want to run off the municipality’s water. Yes it’s a lot of work but it’s perfect and what I wayer
Good job Marc!
I bet that was extremely satisfying once you were done
It varies from state to state but in Colorado homeowners are allowed to do their own plumbing, you just need to pull a permit first.
that is the best timer on the market, congratulations on getting an awesome irrigation system. I love using my timer to water when the yard needs it. I personally have a well so all I have to pay for is the electric which is very nice.
I'll start tagging you on some of my yard pics. I wish I could grow Kentucky blue grass.
Congrats on your new baby!!!
Thank you so much 😀
My city has MPs all over it, parks, shopping centers , housing developments.
i bet you live in a beautiful city!
I like how those updated heads water, can they be put on an exiting hunter traditional head? Thanks
Word👊 Thread off the list of thread on the new.
That guy was the best part of the video
Thank you, sir! I aim to entertain & educate and in that order.
He’s got Johnny Sins doing his irrigation system install. This guy knows how to lay the pipe. 🤣
Word 🎤💧
LMAOOOOO
An MP-Rotator system isn't trivial to install. There are a lot of different heads. Mapping the locations and distances accurately is critical. But well worth it. I've done 3 systems in the family and the results are excellent. Never mind the physical labor, which is the same regardless of which underground head system is use.
Ok Kevin needs his own tv show!
yes he does!
Thank you for you words of encouragement, they are greatly appreciated.
So many cool irrigation heads out now. I have a combo of rotators and traditional heads, mistake I made was not doing a dedicated park strip zone but overall works great. Utility company ran some electric this spring and cut one of my laterals so J have a zine out but plan to repair this week. Be well!
Irrigation is actually pretty easy to DIY. I’d hire out the back flow but once you’re past that it’s pretty straight forward
Good video though 👍
@@TheLawnWhisperer thanks man, idk with all those mp rotators spinkled throught my yard, i would dread digging 50 holes haha
Try that here in Florida when it's 96F outside and 90% humidity. I bet you get 5 holes dug and you're done for the day.
@@kenshinhimura9387 sounds like a nightmare haha
@@kenshinhimura9387 I would still do it 🤷🏻♂️
Kevin is a irrigation installer by day. Mafiso hit man at night
I've got to pay the bills
sssshhh
Just DIY'd our 8000 sqft property! I used a combination of Rain Bird rotors, Rain Bird Maxi-Paws, and Rain Bird rotary nozzles in the garden!
wow congrats!
The hunter guy is pretty proud of himself.
im proud of him
I enjoy what I do for a living and blessed to get to work with George, really having fun with the entire process.
@@Anrodj3 i forgot my measurement of gpm but water pressure is 50 psi
Okay, so reflecting on it, would you hire or DIY the one on your next home?
@@kevinbattistoni5960 depends.
I did professional install in my new build that’s currently building. this is solely because the real estate market in that area prefers it. (Almost every house has it.)
If the local market didn’t care for it (ie. there is little to no ROI in home value for installing professional in-ground sprinklers), I would still do DIY.
You lucked out, man! These guys know exactly what they are doing. When I worked on water wells I came across many landscapers and plumbers and I’m telling you this guy is the real deal. Awesome system! Wish I had guys like that in my area!
appreciate it jake!
Damn ours was put in in the late 90's tech for irrigation has gotten way better since then obviously. Kinda wish I could redo my whole yard and get that installed 😂
its nice!
Patrick Bateman knows his stuff!
Thank you, sir.
Kevin always looks like he’s ready to square up.
Try remembering your lines while recording with him all while he doesn’t mess up once 😂
Jp he’s a gentle butterfly
I've always been a bit intense but never looking for a fight. I the smallest of three boys in my family I got plenty of it frowning up.
I totally need one myself. It was 90 degrees here yesterday and I had to move my lawn sprinkler 4 times. Please help!!
Click the link below the video to be directed to our web page and you can request a pro in your area to give you a quote.
Wow this is very informative. My sprinklers have dry spots 🥲
Thanks Ben!
That would be quite the project! You got this 👍
Welcome to the in-ground club! Now you just need a well!
Thanks man! im gonna have to go silver cymbal style and beat a pole into the ground until i hit water haha
Very nice! I'm sure you are excited George! Enjoy that system!
Installed my own system years ago, it's a nice weekend project if you have nice weather..
Thanks steven!
Congrats on the new irrigation system. It truly looks high tech and super clean install.
Thanks cola! seen you commenting on a bunch of videos, really appreciate the support!
The heat on the feet? Dude brought out the good stuff for UA-cam.
😂
Man!!!!!.... Kevin's' the BOSS. I thought he was just being funny at first, but then I realized that he IS funny, and also KNOWS HIS SHIT. Awesome video man, thanks.
Thanks! he's the joe rogan of irrigation.
Funny and knows his stuff 💯
Thank you for your kind words! I'm a bit of a charter or so I'm told. I was born into the industry four generations deep going back to 1928. I love it and working with George has been great, learning a lot from him!
@@kevinbattistoni5960 That's incredible dude!! The substance of that heritage is evident in your work. All the best!!
P.S. I cringe when I think about the "sprinkler system" I just put in and , well, what you do. I'm certain your comments on it would have everyone on the floor laughing. Adios!
@@darshanaalles6780 all good. I prefer to measure twice and cut once but live and learn, right?
Like the automated system with WiFi!
Pretty awesome set up man. That vibratory plow is pretty nice so they didn't have to tear the hell out of your lawn. Great video man!
Thanks bro 😎
I’m not sure how I’d feel if they had to bust out the trencher haha
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I would have had some serious anxiety about them trenching up my yard. That is one reason why I have always been hesitant to get an in-ground system lol
@@TheLawnLover this is why I haven’t done it yet. Every one I’ve called for a quote all use trenchers only. 🤦♂️
@@nointro same here, I have put too much work into the lawn to have it torn to hell. I will keep at it with my manual sprinklers
@@TheLawnLover I used the link in the description to get connect with people in my area. Hopefully someone good will contact me!
I have 11 of the hunter PGP adjustable ones and 12 of the mp rotator red. They're so fun to watch.
soooo relaxing sitting back and watching them
I install irrigation systems for a living and looks great! Only issue is you went with hunter instead of rain bird, rainbird quality is 1000 times better lol
RB is good competition but I respectfully disagree with your statement especially when they don't even manufacture a remote and we have been remote ready and manufacturing since 1996. Some people like Ford and other like Chevy. To each there own. Thank you for engaging in the content!
Congratulations on a great system. Nice shoes Kevin.
Thanks randy!
Thank you!
what happens in winter when freezing comes to the water trapped in the check valves? do you need to evacuate the water with air pressure? how does that work without an air compressor?
Yes, the system will go through what we call the winterization process. Will shoot the process and put it out in George's channel this fall, stay tuned.
All your vids are so cool…
Thanks Tom, always appreciate ya stoppin by 🙂
The shoes and the socks though....👍🤙
thank you
@ 3:45, Dude opened that valve box like a BOSS 😎 lmao!
Haha for real
This Kevin dude with his teal Jordan's, one piece jumpsuit , violet shades and body stances seems like a character out of some script lol but knows his trade.
No doubt, I am that. authentic - what you see is what you get with the cameras on or off. thank you for engaging with the content.
Happy for you to get a new system!! I on the other hand will still be pulling hoses all over the yard. I have 6500 sq ft just in the front yard. I've looked into it but stopped when the price was getting way to high for me and that was doing the work myself. Now after seeing your video I may just forget it. LOL I'm still happy that they hook you up brother!!
Great video, that's a great blessing. Thanks
Thanks Eric!
Forever thankful 🙏
Very nice, I'm still rocking the classic oscillating fan sprinkler 😎. Looks good, may need some leveling after it settles.
Thanks bro!
actually the level is not bad at all in the front yard, i can hardly tell it happened
backyard is gonna need some time to recover
