- 95% of people don't know how to water their lawns properly. In today's video, we will cover everything you need to know about how to keep your lawn hydrated during a heatwave and how to look after it if there is a hosepipe ban.
Now first things first, do you need to water your lawn to keep it alive? No, you don't, it will come back in its own time if it doesn't see any water. Though this video is for people that want to keep their lawn green and healthy during hot weather. And I will be sharing my top tips to help you from not watering properly with an added bonus of how to save money watering your lawn.
I will also be looking at different types of sprinklers and testing them out, so you don't have to.
Here are the sprinklers that we tested, the one that failed hasn't been listed as I don't wish for any of you to waste your money on it!

Great advice as always Robbie!

Great video, that adjustable one to bring the spray pattern narrow or wide looks ideal! Tried so many Hozelock sprinklers but all to big for my front lawn. Thanks guys!
The blue one was my favorite one as it has a lot of options and works really well
I have a few different types of sprinkler head and the circular Hozelock one covers a small area - might be just right for your front lawn.
@@neilfarmer6609 hey, if it's the 'Hozelock Multi Rotary sprinkler" I've tried it but it doesn't cover it all being a square garden. I might give it another go. :)
Excellent video Robbie. A water timer who knew. Brilliant idea. I do it like this. To save water for the garden and reduce water bill. Summer time no baths just showers,I also put in a 300l water butt. But this years revelation is my verticutter. The difference is night and day. Its very hot here. Keep working. 👍👽
It's hot here too, enjoy it 😁 🌞👌
Some great advice thanks. Great video.
Your welcome 😁
Great information, thank you. Keep up the good work. Seattle
Glad it was helpful 👍👍👍
Great video Robbie
Thanks Ron 😍
I really want to have a Guinness with this lad
Cracking job as always. I've got some bits arriving this weekend and might have a wee hack/bodge for you if it works.
Cool 👍 keep me posted
Some good tips there Robbie........ I use a basic soil moisture test meter, to aid me when to water the lawn . Has 'Wet', 'Moist', 'Dry' indicator scale. I just push the meter spike in, at random intervals across the lawn. Then I only water, when meter goes into the 'Dry'. I rarely water the lawn every day, usually every 2-3 days in hot weather.
Perfect 👍
I have the budget one all I do is adjust the water pressure from the tap and it reduces or increases the distance of the spray to your liking worked fine for me.
1/2 mil video in 9 days! Nice work!
Thanks 👍 sometimes UA-cam just decides to make it popular 😂 and off they go 💚
Very high percentage!
Another great one Robbie, thanks. Learned a heap more there from you and will try the screwdriver test tomorrow. I must admit I just took the hose to it last night. Got a new puppy and couldn’t be bothered or find the energy to set up the sprinkler. Am I to late for a wetting agent? I got some last month, but have never got round to it.
The wetting agent needs to go on before it starts to dry out. But to be honest I don't use them that much myself so you should be ok 👌👍
@@Premier_lawns_official Thanks Robbie.
Jason I put down new grass seed and there small patches of yellow that eventually killed off the grass. Should i re seed or replace the dirt?
I use a hose :) I find it relaxing standing there for 20mins... maybe I'm a bit simple 😂
In Bulgaria, where we get hot, dry summers, so watering is essential.
I can think of nothing worse haha 🤣
@@Premier_lawns_official Haha, but you have videos to produce! Thanks from the reply, I've learned a lot from your channel :)
I'm out in my front lawn every couple days for about half hour with my hose. I put some oldies or blues on and water away. It's cheaper than therapy.
I use a hose too. That's the best part of my day. But now I am being pressured to change my ways, to get the right sprinklers and put on the timer. So now they caused me stress, so much I don't know why, they say I am not water well, but my yard always looked good. Then when I got sick and didn't feel well enough to go out, I lost all I worked so long for, they let it get so dry. Cuz i didnt have automatic sprinklers out in my yard, now still not well, have been trying to get back what I had. It's just not working out so well.. have lost hope I ever will. I had nice green grass all over my yards, I don't know how I did, if I was doing it so wrong. But now they let it go, and I haven't got it back.. the times I enjoyed just holding the hose and destress from all they say. May never be part of my day again ... they make it sound like such a chore. But no. Because they couldn't do it ... I am so sad I got so sick I couldn't keep it up. But to any things are run by machines, my grass grew cuz my heart.
Thanks for the advice! What 'd be your recommendation for a 40m2 rectangular garden ? To sprinkle everywhere all in once.
That will depend on your water flow etc.
.
More Jason’s Tooltips in future 😀 As I’m on a water meter I can only deep water once a month. The lawn dries our faster along one edge where it borders on to my Neighbour’s drive. It’s gone brown there. Is it worth adding extra water to this part or just leave it dormant.
Jason's tooltips will be a new feature as he is a natural. Expect to see more of them! Around the edges of driveways etc it can be hard to keep hydrated as often the soil isn't as thick there as other parts of the lawn.
I have the same problem, this year I’ve been using a watering can on the edge once a day and it’s made a massive difference
The budget one does have adjustment, you can set each arm to a different arc by twisting the ends, so you have one quite vertical to stop the issue you had not getting coverage close to the sprinkler. I have it and when you have it set right it covers a circle absolutely fine
We couldn't get it to do anything apart from what it did, we must of had a faulty unit 👍 it didn't come with much in the way of packaging or instructions
@@Premier_lawns_officialmaybe there are slight variants of ‘budget’! The one I have looks the same and you can turn the ends. Thanks for the response.
@@philgornall no probs
@@Premier_lawns_official I have the budget one, you just turn the end of each head to get the effect you want. It is the best out of the ones you tested as I have tried most of them.
I have the so called budget one. It is fantastic and saves me wasting water like the long one that i threw in the garbage...
I live in South Florida. Daily watering in the summer is almost a necessity.
Excellent. Every 2-3 days been saying that since I was a sapling 😂 but no one listens 😂 some great tips as always, thank you.
Paul, welcome to my world. No one ever listens to me either 😂
What? 😂😂😂😂
I’m going to try this as I’ve been using the sprinkler every day, thanks for sharing
You can adjust the "budget" one. You change the position of the black bits and it changes the flow shape and how fast it spins
Great thank you
been looking for that oslicating one online but cannot find it. :D
It's been great for the engagement 😁
All very well and good having a timer. But my garden is a third of an acre and I need to move my sprinklers about 6 tunes to cover the lawn. So 8pm it is for me unfortunately. Although I've never had any diseases in my lawn
Your lucky, the last few years just about every lawn in the UK has had a good dose of red thread at least once a season
@@Premier_lawns_official but if I leave for work at 5:30am and the lawn takes nearly 2 hours to water, how am I supposed to do it otherwise? I'm not buying one of those £250 sprinklers that ride along the hose line.
@@mikedinni6318 I haven't suggested you buy an expensive sprinkler... If you can't water your lawn early doors, it's not the end of the world, as you say your lawn has done fine up until now :)
This video is to show people how to save on watering their lawns and the best time to do it.
Great vid .. Again!
My problem is when I go on holiday! My lawn is approx 12 x4 mtrs. I don’t what to run hoses on the lawn using a timer for obvious reasons. Hose burn in the lawn!
Can yo recommend a sprinkler or 2 or 3 in seres on a timer to water my lawn when on holiday?
Maybe a Sprinkler on the edge of the lawn… but which one?
Nice to see Jason….a junior Robbie 😀
That's a great question, not sure to be honest but something I could look at for another video in the future.
Jason is very good in front of the camera, expect to see a lot more of him
@@Premier_lawns_official I think that would make a great vid as we all have holidays!. A series of linked sprinklers would be an idea.
Maybe the ones where you could alter the shape of the spray for different lawns?
Thanks Robbie! …. Top man!
Hi, can you tell me how long, how often and how many inches of water you are currently watering the newly seeded area shown?
You just need to keep it damp, it will depend on the temperature local to you
What do you recommend for a garden with low water pressure ? thanks Rob
I didn't really test for low pressure
I have this cheapest budget sprinkler, it have 3 arms which you can adjust the tilt, more tilt more speed, you can put one arm straight up making it spray right above the sprinkler covering all the areas, other 2 arms can control wider area and slower speed of spinning, which will make water droplets instead of spray.
And lastly opening the tap will help you with all the adjustments.
Thanks a few people have said the same 👍
5:00 am whoo!
oh to use your hosepipe but not here in cornwall with a ban since last august and no chance of using one till next year
Just get it watered
There is not many water police about
Dear god, I don't think I could cope! We don't have that problem in Belfast, that's for sure with the rain we get here
@@Premier_lawns_official I checked. It was 2018 last time we had a hosepipe ban in Belfast and in typical fashion, NI Water issued a ban using English legislation so it wasn't even legal.
@@AntonGully They were asking folks not to water their lawns last year... It mustnt of made it as far as a ban

Cheers Robbie, I'll have to get my trimmer set up for the mornings. I know with this heat wave not to put nitrogen on your lawn, but what's the best granular fertiliser for summer time?
Thanks Robbie
Would you use a
9 7 7 fert or higher nitrogen?
I use a lot of slow-release nitrogen fertilisers with a balanced NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) ratio. They provide a steady supply of nutrients over an extended period, which helps avoid excessive growth spurts and minimises the risk of burning the grass in hot weather.
As always, cheers Robbie for the advice!!! 😊
@@Premier_lawns_official could you recommend any brand of fertilizer?
@@geoffaries I use a lot of ICL products
Robbie what about cutting in the heat to is it best to keep the length ?
That will depend on what height and how often it's usually cut at. My advice would be just to take the tips off
Hi Robbie I was trying to work with 30 r 35mm sitting about 40 now as let it grow ther with the heat was thinking just chip off it then
Soil test for regulating nutrients and PH test help alot for ground compaction and the ability of the soil to absorb and hold water longer while draining appropriately. The screw driver test is for compaction not how much water is in the ground. Here in Upstate New York in the U.S. we have heavy clay soil which loves to compact and become like brick if you don't have your soil nutrients and PH correct. With everything in appropriate ranges water for 1.5 inches per week if your not getting rain is plenty. Using organics in your lawn reduces compaction and less water is needed as water gets deeper into the ground. A product call Hydretain also work well for water less often...I never need to aerate my lawn or use sand to help drainage because my organic input and using humic acid along with root growth stimulates keep my soil draining well. Want a great draining soil...Grow massive roots...
Pete... thankyou for great information...💗💗
What mower is that how did you get the stripes without a roller ?
That mower show is a Milwaukee Battery mower, the lawn at the front is cut with an old antique John Deere cylinder mower
So just a heads up on that green sprinkler. It looks bad, because you didn't use it properly. You gave it way too much pressure (I did the same). You can actually adjust the nozzles slightly, to point them more up, but then back the pressure off, just turn it on a bit and you'll see steady streams of water coming out and it will cover the area around the sprinkler.
Agreed. I love this channel but I do feel they either had ulterior motives to sway the results or really just missed the blinding obvious that you could adjust it. Absolutely nothing wrong with the cheap sprinkler apart from you can’t adjust the pattern. You will always waste water with any sprinkler…
Yeah this sprinkler is amazing, you have to adjust each leg though to ensure full coverage. I do an 8x8 garden with this easily
So do I need to water it everyday or not?
Good tips. It's probably not a good idea to be grabbing foxgloves bare handed though.
Thanks, I'm all about the grass. I had to Google foxgloves to double check what you meant 🙂👍😜 plants aren't my forte
I think jason is a natural in front of the camera. I can see you doing a lot more behind the camera work in the future 😅👍
Graham as always, you have nailed it. Yes, I think my camera work will improve no end 😂😂😂
Just needs to learn how to say oss-ill-ay-ting
I must be psychic because I literally just came here to see if you had anything about watering lawns. Another week of no rain and my "lawn" will be one big brick.
I had planned to do something else this week, but my lawn like everyone else's up and down the country is drying out big time now and it seemed appropriate 👌
"Onto the budget one, there's no adjustment for this"
Yes there is, you can angle the three arms for a wider or narrower throw pattern. This also solves the "gap between the device and where the water lands" problem, by setting the three arms to different angles: having one pointing more vertically means the water will land closer to the sprinkler
Thanks 👍
The cheapest design (£2.50 @ home bargains in Belfast) is absolutely superb! It can be adjusted to remove the gap you found in the video. Real shame yous marked it down so much as it really is incredible value for money in comparison to the bigger brand units.
We couldn't get it to work any other way. It may have been a faulty unit, who knows. It didn't come with much packaging or instructions....
I agree the budget is a good sprinkler though I’ve gone and bought Amazon basics oscillating one from their warehouse at a good price to try too
I am new to gardening. What is an oslowcating sprinkler?
Sometimes spelt "Oscillating".
An oscillating sprinkler is a device that helps water your garden or lawn by spraying water in a back-and-forth motion. It has a long tube with several small holes or nozzles on top. When you attach it to a hose and turn on the water, the sprinkler moves from side to side, covering a wide area.
As the water flows through the holes or nozzles, it creates a spray that travels in an arc. The oscillating motion of the sprinkler ensures that the water is distributed evenly across your garden or lawn. This helps to keep your plants hydrated and promotes healthy growth.
You can usually adjust the range and width of the spray by using controls on the sprinkler. This allows you to customize the watering pattern to suit the size and shape of your garden.
OSS I lay ting he means
Lol. Searching for this joke in the comments 😂
A good way to tell if your lawn is getting dry is by looking at the color. Before it starts to take damage it shifts the color a bit to blue, which is the perfect time for a deep watering.
How long is a deep watering?
@@sleepersix Depends on your soil. Online you can find Liters per square meter and then calculate the time with how much flow your irrigation has.

😂
I don't know that's for sure. Man, I'm trying. Grass is not easy.
Not a problem here in Northern Ireland as it pisses down 24hrs per day.
Today is the first time it has rained in about 4 week's
I hand water with a hose a good 5 days a week. The lawn still dries out. A lot of sand in Florida.
👍👍👍
Budget spray can be manipulated by twisting the ends to give an even spread
The oscillating one can become jammed by limescale in areas with hard water.
Hey Neil I have yet to see that though have read about it
If it does jam spray WD-40 or PB Blaster into the water nozzles. Let it sit for an hour or so in the nozzles...Set it back up and should be totally unclogged...
I think you’ll find it is oz-lik-are-ing
The popped shirt collar is back !
It was a tad warm!
I’ve never understood the suggestion no to water in the evening. It rains at all hours, and we don’t worry about it.
It rains at all hours, of course, but you're choosing to add extra water on top
If you're doing that, you can choose when to add the water - so it's best to add it in the morning when the grass is about to grow and be active all day, rather than at night when fungus is active
I’ve always thought watering at night was better during a heat wave/ dry spell as it gave the water time to soak in and not evaporate
Water at NIGHT -
SAVE 75-80% IN EVAPORATION!!!
(Water will stay in ground for longer)
Agreed - Fungus doesn’t just develop by watering at night. There’s several other factors like how much water you’re putting etc.
Surely watering at night throughout droughts or when it hasn’t rained in ages would be ok to do too.
Ozlowkating?
There is right or wrong way just water especially in this warm weather we are having
Hate to be a wet reg but the budget sprinkler is adjustable… may be stiff but the black tips are rotatable to change the distance of spray from the base… throw the water higher and it will close the unsprayed ring
That said they’re still inferior to most other designs… but they’re adjustable and they work better than nothing…
Funny I have a video going out this weekend and we address this very thing 🙂
Remember each place in our country is different. Amount of rain, season, and composition of soil will determine how much water is absorbed.
I found this video because i just moved into a house and the grass is completely yellow. The problem that i have is i work late and wont be up at 5am. To clearify, i need to mow my dead lawn to keep the water in it?
No you don't need to mow it. You can also get a trimmer. Then it doesn't matter what time you are up at
@@Premier_lawns_official Even if this grass is completely dried out and yellow?
I have a big lawn and lots of plants i used a lot of water before but the water company has now put me on a water meter and im now paying per litre.
Have a look at collecting the rainwater off your roof
the hozelock stuff breaks after a year and is priced like its high quality.
I haven't experienced that
People should probably NOT aerate (or pitchfork) their lawns in a heatwave or when they see signs of lawn dehydration. Only aerate during the full growth period of your lawn. For example, for cool season grasses you missed the Spring growth period so wait until the Fall.
I don't see any one aerating their lawn in a heatwave...
A sprinkler specifically for round gardens..? Nope. It has several settings with different patterns which create different shapes... for different shaped gardens.
When your lawn is sopping wet it leaves huge footprints and doesn't spring back up either... Also, if the soil is wet below the surface the screwdriver will come our muddy. Confusing...
Like it doesn't rain in the middle of the night. So why would water at 2 am cause harm. The answer is it doesn't. Over watering is what causes harm. The time you do it doesn't. If your done before the sun comes up you have ensured to get the most out of the water.
👍👍
👍👍👍
Great advice but I needed a translator ;)

I hate Amazon. Why always link to Amazon? Great video nevertheless
Hi there
This video took two of us 1 day to film and 1 day to edit (3 days in total if you like for one person). I'm self employed and a small business and have to earn a living
The great thing with Amazon is affiliate links, these are links to the products I talk about.
It doesn't cost you an extra to buy from my links and if you do use them Amazon pays me a small commission on the sale (it's not much btw)
This in turn helps pay for videos like this 👇
Without it, I couldn't make the videos, so it's a win all round.
I'm glad the emphasis here is to preserve water. I do think watering a lawn is a complete waste of time. As a golfer I don't like them using sprinklers on the greens. It just wastes water.
Are you a member at a club, if so then those greens are your clubs biggest asset
Keeping those greens going with water is super important
Speaking as an ex green keeper
@Premier_lawns_official yes i am. Golf courses need to be using water from their own lakes. Once that runs out I think Water courses are need to take priority. As periods of drought become more frequent and last longer wildlife which we depend on and agriculture needs to take priority.
@@streamleazefishhouse most golf courses that don't have a lake and if they have the money are putting in bore holes.... There is plenty of water down there.
Playing golf although fun, is more harmful than watering grass. Do you drive to your club? Isn't that wasteful based on your logic.
