Despite the criticism GRRM's been getting these last few years due to his antics and constant delaying of Winds, no one could argue that at the end of the day, he's still an utterly brilliant writer
He based a lot of his world on real life history. Starks and Lanisters were inspired by The Wars of the Roses. The Conquest on William of Normandy and the Dance on the English Civil war between Matilda (daughter of Henry I) and her cousin Stephen. The Mad King is very reminiscent of Henry VI but loosely. But that's not to say he didn't do a brilliant job world building.

Cregan Stark could have been Hand of the King for a long time and gained so much influence over the realm but instead came home to Winterfell and let the realm deal with itself. Now we know where Jon Snow got his "I don't want it" energy. What a guy.
There must always a stark in the winterfell.. Lord Eddard Stark came home as well after the war. But robert baratheon called him back to kings landing, leading to his death.
yeah i did the same today . i mean the 2nd season was just tease and filler and didn´t properly move the plot after season 1 . i wanted to know how it all ends because this show can very well drag for another 5-6 years and they can also butcher it like they did to GoT . i will probably wait until it is entirely finish and then binge-watch it in 2 or 3 days .
People keep saying it’s only going to be 3 seasons. 4 at the most. If they rush this story like that they’re going to fuck it up. There’s no way you can tell this story in 4 seasons and give proper introduction to the many characters and exposition that they have given the initial characters so far. I wish people would just quit talking that shit. It’s the biggest show in the history of HBO. Quit trying to wrap it up before it even gets going. It’s not deadwood.
they were an independent nation. why would they join the war where they had nothing to gain since their gorilla tactics wouldn't work on open fields(tactics which they used against Aegon the conqueror). The same can be said about the north who sent one army of barely a few thousand and after they died all they did was sit on their asses while the realm burned and the people they allied with lost. it was only after Aegon 2 was crowned that they decided to join the war officially
“Dorne has danced with dragons before. I would sooner sleep with scorpions” -Prince Qoren Martell in response to a letter from Ser Otto Hightower, asking for support during the Dance of the Dragons
The size of his army is terrible they need to fix that shi. Robb stark raises the same amount in less then 1/6th of the time. He need 45k-50k at the lowest.
Watched this after S1E7 because I got far too excited. As someone who hasn't read the book, my jaw dropped SEVERAL times. I screamed. I paused to compose myself *multiple* times. If the showrunners get this right, this will be one of the most exhilarating, bloody, heart-wrenching, terrifying and mind-blowing series' in TV history. I *cannot* wait.
Same. There were some parts when I literally said "nu uh" aloud while reading Fire and Blood. Some of this stuff, I just couldn't believe...even for the ASOIAF universe.
The showrunners added some to the storyline. They didn't actually follow what was written on the book but hopefully they will include all the climax. Because the story of this is really beyond!! Just wow! I am not a book reader yet, but damn! How I wished I did!
@@JustJenni07This book is written like a history book with more than one source telling the story. We never know what is actually and what isn’t. So the writers of the tv show have a lot of freedom when they tell the story.
Starks always seem to get it right. Send in battle hardened warriors welcoming death while simultaneously gathering a large host. listening to a women's council on how to avoid more suffering for the realm was genius. They may have "cold" personalities but they're extremely loyal and somehow remain humble through it all.
The men of the north, such as the starks, did not intermix with the Andals upon their spread onto Westeros. Because of this, they maintained faith with the old Gods while the remaining realms adopted the faith of the s3ven, a distinctly Andal religion.
What I got from this and watching the shows is that GOT, HOTD and their entire lore can be summed up as “House Stark cleaning up messes that involve crazy people from House Targaryen”
Battle Above the God's eye honestly is what I am anticipating the most, I hate to see my favorite Dragon die, but to see ol' One Eye get his, will be well worth it.
Lord Cregan Stark is as honorable as Eddard was, but unlike Eddard, when he reached Kings landing. He didn't fuck around, he went straight to business. That's why he is better than Eddard in that sense.
Cregan had an entire army of northeners and the lads behind his back. And all he had to contend with was a battered city that was already destabilized. Ned only had 40 men under his command. That's hardly fair.
@@apacalypsagon3758 Nah, the King was Ned's bestfriend, he's more privileged than Cregan because Cregan needed an army while Ned didn't. The only thing that Ned had to do was tell Robert that his children are bastards. But instead he gave Cersei the act of "mercy" by telling her about what he discovered about her and Jaime which eventually resulted to Robert dying and Joffrey usurping the crown thanks to Ned's "mercy". If Ned and Cregan were to switch places YOU KNOW he'll waste no time and tell Robert about his discoveries.. he'll even offer to behead Cersei and Jaime himself 😂 and without Lady Blackwood this time, no one can stop him from executing their bastard children too.
@@daedalus3726 yeah but the thing is seeing the remains of raenys and aegon traumatized Ned. If he did go through with it he'd be bound by northern custom to kill all of cersie's children. I know westerosi is brutal but their are things they consider a outright cruel and devilish.

@@bharat3719 I would say what leads up to Aegon's death is the worst. At least Rhaenyra just dies, isn't prolonged. Aegon is completely handicapped and horribly disfigured.
In a horrific twist of irony, the woman who started this string of tragedies in her pursuit for power ended up with no power or influence and died a lonely and miserable shell of her former self.
people hate on the GOT ending, but I feel like that's the fate of the Targaryens - GRRM has made that clear time and time and TIME again. Just like Dany, in the pursuit of power, died in a tragedy - dying by her nephew. Book wise, I still think she's going to have a very tragic death too. Seeing Targaryen history made it so clear Dany was never going to get on the Iron Throne. Those that pursue it and want it, will never get it.
Yeah and she also grew to hate the colour 'green' if i'm not wrong. I hope they put all these little details in the show. Since the book reads as a history book from third party povs, i suppose the show will reveal the real behind the scenes if George is working closely on it.
@@thenewguyinred Rhaenyra also was alone in the end like Daemon left her for someone else to live a quiet life. Both Alicent and her had a tragic life for the throne
Is it just me or is the saddest part of the dance of the dragons the death of the dragons? They’re bonded to their riders and do everything they can to protect them. Look at Stormcloud, he died because he protected Aegon and even managed to get Aegon safely to Dragonstone before dying.
I felt that.. hearing all the deaths of dragons... It's painful.. This war is too massive. Maybe lives are lost, maybe dragons died... And for what?? Just for the throne who doesn't have cushion 🥲
If only Rhaenys the queen who never was, uttered "dracarys" to the greens before escaping to Dragonstone, then no dance of the dragons will occur and thus fire and blood rule up to this day.
Drogon survived. Maybe someday they'll make a sequel to GoT like 200 years in the future and Drogon would be still alive and now the largest dragon, even bigger than Balerion. That would be amazing
tl;dw: The greens ruined three generations of peace for a petty powergrab Corlys is the only reasonable person for a thousand nautical miles It is SUPER easy to get in and out of the Red Keep Starks get sh!t done. Alicent Hightower: the woman that singlehandedly took down the Targaryens. It may not have been immediate, but she crippled them enough to bring about their destruction many years later. Edit: Guys, the Hightower House still exists in the present story. They just aren't mentioned in the GoT show. Margarey Tyrell's mother was a Hightower. They are still a noble house in ASOIAF.
Actually it might be the tragedy of summerhall which caused the end of the targaryens as they did make a comeback after the dance of the dragons but summerhall left them with like only 4 members in the family

I am so ready to see the Hour of the Wolf in live action. It's crazy to think that they were quite literally the big storm that obliterated the Green faction. If only Rhaenyra thought rationally then maybe she would've survived considering it didn't take that long for the Starks to finally march onto King's Landing after she sailed away.
I don't think it's mentioned here, but Rhaenyra wasn't popular among the people because Greens plundered the royal treasury before they fled, leading her to impose a lot of taxes to make up for the lost funds. Her support was waning every single day. If she didn't flee, I'm sure she would've been ousted well before Stark arrived.
@@Kaboomboo This is true, Rhaenyra should've went with the Manderlys when they offered her to come with them instead of sailing to Dragonstone. Then she could've fleed safely and maybe rejoin Cregan or the Lads when they marched on King's Landing.

I would be glad of we had 5 seasons. They don't need to over extend themselves. Also, I can already a future episode named "the hour of the wolf" and I can't wait to see it.
This is insane and will make for thrilling, fast-paced television, but the key to HotD’s success will be how it fills out the space between major battles once the war is fully underway. ASOIAF has some thrilling action, but I hope that the majority of the show doesn’t become “BOOOOOM dragons, raaah! Hack slash, city destroyed, five characters died this episode, lots of fighting!” Under GRRM, Ryan and Miguel, though, I know we’re in good hands. If season one is any indication, we’ll get some of the most well set-up, emotionally-driven, politically rich medieval fantasy warfare put to screen. Still with multiple character deaths per episode!
Are you kidding me we're going to want that kind of stuff look at how is descriptive there's going to have to be lots of killing lots of blood and slash lots of blowing up stuff. But you are right we're going to have to space it out that means at least we're going to have to have three episodes of battles the fourth episode is going to be a rest. And then five and six and seven episodes are going to be battles again and then keep repeating the same thing until the end
Season 1 of HOTD is from 0:00 to around 10:00. Season 2 of HOTD starts at around 8:30 and terminates around minute 16:00. There is an overlap in this video since Jaecerys meets Cregan Stark, and Daemon goes to the Riverlands before Lucerys meets Aemond. This happens in reverse order in the series. The whole Daemon plot of season 2 is from 8:39 to 9:00, less than a minute! Basically, the whole story of Daemon in season 2 was made out of blue as there was no material in the book. Interesting that the first two seasons took around half the time of this video, and two other seasons are remaining. The timing I would say is perfect.
The one thing I would add to this video is just how messed up Argon was by the end of this.. His first major wound like literally melted his armor to him and by the time he killed Rehynera he was a crippled shell of a man and somewhat mad because of everything he had gone through. He also initially declined to take the crown when his father died but was pushed by his mother and Christan Cole. Edit the other thing I would add, aside from the death of the dragons, the blackfryers also played a big role in the downfall of the Targaryen's some 50 years before Robert's rebellion...
Nice to see that I'm not the only one who thinks this story is almost as good as the event of the book that first introduced us to the world of Westeros.
The only question is: Why haven’t I watched this video before now! I’m watching house of dragons and following along good enough, but this video makes it so much better!
Stark is always the best choice when it comes to ruling and Targaryen is the name for ruling. In the future there was a Targaryen raised by the Starks, Imagine if Jon Snow really claimed the throne.
Jon Snow was a terrible ruler ! Not fit to be a king, that's why he got stabbed in the nights watch, almost lost the battle of bastards (thanks to sansa and her negotiation skills who brought vale into battle) and got imprisoned after the battle of kings landing. Just bcoz you have a King's blood flowing through your veins doesn't makes you a worthy ruler.
@@pranavpoojary6474 Jon was actually a decent ruler of the night’s watch. He got betrayed because the Night’s watch are prejudice towards Wildlings and they didn’t want to work with them even to combat the Others.
@@Kunumbah1 I agree jon Snow was a decent ruler, but he was not a worthy king as he lacked diplomacy. A good king should always sense his foes and react accordingly, or else get stabbed by the one's he trust!
Wow a mil and a half more likes since HOTD S.1 finale on your video? Fantastic! You deserve it! It’s an amazing breakdown and the simple visuals allows the viewer to not get to confused.👍
I understand the desire to go back to old projects and remake them better than before, but damn, I'm gonna miss the old version of this. Those were the videos that first got me interested in reading more about the lore, which led to me getting Fire and Blood, and some of the quotes and intonations in the original vids were just perfect. ("The Dance of the Dragons ... was upon them.")
Can't wait to see these events interpreted in House of the Dragon. I'm assuming they'll close out season 1 with the deaths of Viserys Targaryen and then Lyman Beesbury, season 2 with the death of Rhaenys Targaryen, season 3 with the deaths of Otto Hightower and Jasper Wylde, season 4 with the deaths of Aemond Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen (?), season 5 with the storming of the Dragonpit and the deaths of Hugh Hammer and Jon Roxton, and season 6 with the hour of the wolf and the death of Alicent Hightower. Can't imagine they could do this story justice with any fewer seasons and I don't know if I have the patience for any more. I'm also wondering if they'll show Daemon dying, Daemon surviving, or just leave it ambiguous. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing everything play out.
They’ve said that they’re only looking to do 3-4 seasons for the show but I totally agree. Idk how they’re gonna fit so much stuff in such short time frames. If they’re ending the first season with the crowning of Aegon II, then maybe they’ll end the 2nd season with Aemond taking over Aegons position as King. Then I feel like it’d be a natural progression for season 3 to focus on the dragon seeds and Aemond as a villain, ending with Daemon and Aemonds deaths and the betrayal of the dragonseeds. Then Season 4 would be about the rest. It sounds rushed but to be fair the book it’s based only has it take up like 4 chapters. I’m sure they can figure it out
@@SALMANNNNNNN that’d definitely be a pretty good cliffhanger, but they could also start season 2 with it to set the tone. Either way I’m very excited to see that carnage
@@herootaku5682 I’d rather have them stretch it out a bit so they can get their big dragon battle quota filled and still keep the interest political conversations. The more they stretch it out, the further itll move away from season 8 territory
I mean yes biologically she wins but legally she lost as her granddaughters daena elaena and Rhaena were Passover for Viserys Vaella the simple and Rhaegals daughter were also overlooked so women still didn’t really have any inheritance rights when it came to the throne
This is like atleast 5 seasons worth, in a span of probably a decade, and the main book series ASOIAF will still most likely not yet finished by then. 😂

I think they'll be5 seasons. Though I can imagine them making the events of the next few battles happen in one battle if that makes sense? I'm guessing Jace dies end of season 2? Maybe battle of the godseye end of season 3?
Daemon is basically my favourite character from this story. He is like the legitimate heir to the iron throne but still joined with rhyenia and supported her till the end. Although he cheated her with another girl, he fought for her and possibly died for her cause.True chad!!
No he is heir to nothing. King's son has crown priority over the King's younger brother. The King has both a named-heir eldest daughter(Rhaenyra) and a legitimate son(Aegon II)
@Christian Lopez If Daemon had been made king, then he would have tried to kill Allicent’s children for sure, to ensure his children’s succession, after Viserys’ death. The Hightowers wanted the throne and Daemon would view them as a challenge. There would still be a dance of dragons. The only way to prevent it would be if Vicerys had never married Alicent. If he had never married, then it would not have mattered if Daemon, Rhaneyra, or both were on the throne. There would be no challengers.
Great episodes. Reviews of House of The Dragon with the new Targaryen Knights armour will look great. Could imagine a smirking Joffrey Baratheon/Lannister popping up like the Microsoft paperclip regarding Rhaenyra and Sunfyre.
The dragons had the same destructive force as nukes and only the Targaryens had them. Ironic how the other houses only had to wait until the family got rid of them themselves.
The theory is they didnt just wait but that there was a conspiracy between the maesters, the chruch and the hightower family (which all 3 resided in oldtown) to get rid of the Dragons/Targaryens
Sadly it didn't take much. They literally fought each other to the point of extinction. When all is said and done they gained absolutely nothing and lost pretty much everything. This is why I stand by the coin tossing comment. Many of them weren't wrapped too tight which is why outsiders knew how to play them.
@@janellejulianajoy The Hightowers would gain the most but they lost the most. In the show I see it as a Hightower vs Targaryen but in the books its the faith against the Targaryens.

I really love how the Northerners led by Starks came south and for a lack of better words, utterly fucked shit up, claimed ridiculous victories, ended the war and just left because they couldn't be asked to run politics.
Now I get why Tywin tells Arya that the Targaryens never fully recovered from this war, so many losses from both sides whoever was standing in the end could barely call it a victory
Otto was right when he told Viserys to wed Rhaenyra to Aegon. Criston Cole was right when he told Rhaenyra to run away with him, she never really wanted the throne anyway. Otto's fears of the realm tearing itself apart were wrong, as any who didn't bend the knee would've been crushed by a unified Targaryen/Velaryon force, with the full might of their dragons. They would not have had a chance without Otto giving them champions who could ride dragons. His fears created this.
Criston was NEVER RIGHT. Will you send your daughter to live a life of poverty and shame and insecurity with a low born man? As king's daughter she was never safe outside.
Otto was an idiot if he didnt push Viserys I to make Rheanyra his heir instead of Deamon Viserys would marry Alicent have a son and automatically he becames the heir not his brother. But after making Rheanyra his heir and he would not pas her over for a Hightower kid even if its his. Rheanyra has the blood of the dragon Aegon the usurper has half of the blood of the dragon.
She wanted her position, her only concern was she would be replaced once Viserys had a son. And this is all because of Otto. He engineered it all to remove Daemon as heir. Once Aemma died and Daemon was gone he'd have a chance to scheme openly which is what he did.
Kings gotta learning how to surrender their crown to their heir will still alive. Imagine if viserys did that, while sick, he simply gave up his crown to his daughter, there wouldn’t be any problem!

How such a rich history can be invented out of someone's mind, is amazing to me.

Lord Cregan Stark is as honorable as Eddard was, but unlike Eddard, when he reached Kings landing. He didn't fuck around, he went straight to business. That's why he is better than Eddard in that sense.

I hope we get some backstory on Cannibal! That dragon has some Smokey background and his disappearance is shrouded in mystery.

Don't be surprised if there's a fifth season because of this tight timeline
Yeah We cooked. It needs to be 2 hours at least next week. No way they can tie up these loose ends
@@WeezyD313 I'm hoping next week is the battle of the gullet. Epic way to end the season!
I think they'll be5 seasons. Though I can imagine them making the events of the next few battles happen in one battle if that makes sense? I'm guessing Jace dies end of season 2? Maybe battle of the godseye end of season 3?
@@bman77717 RIP wishes, we got nothing
Daemon is basically my favourite character from this story. He is like the legitimate heir to the iron throne but still joined with rhyenia and supported her till the end. Although he cheated her with another girl, he fought for her and possibly died for her cause.True chad!!
No he is heir to nothing. King's son has crown priority over the King's younger brother. The King has both a named-heir eldest daughter(Rhaenyra) and a legitimate son(Aegon II)
@@zymethamp6596 well he didn’t get to be king at least both of he’s sons did and 3 of he’s grandchildren that’s a w
@@free22 to be fair daemon should’ve just killed Otto since their rivalry ran deep since he knew Otto never had his bothers best interest in mind
@@richrod0122 Killing Otto would have stopped the Dance for sure but Daemon would have had to do it before Otto pushed Alicent on Viserys.
Great episodes. Reviews of House of The Dragon with the new Targaryen Knights armour will look great. Could imagine a smirking Joffrey Baratheon/Lannister popping up like the Microsoft paperclip regarding Rhaenyra and Sunfyre.
Man this world is so fascinating
Not gunna lie I absolutely can not wait to see this on screen I'm so excited!
I love the similarities to The Anarchy between Empress Matilda and Stephen de Blois
The anarchy is a kind of poor comparison to make because Stephen de Blois took his claim from being the son of the queen’s sister therefore deriving his claim from a woman.
It's not all that poor considering George has mentioned it as a partial inspiration to this Civil War. It just isn't the only inspiration.
Never forget however, the most craven act ever in the histories of Westeros, an act that left millions broken asunder and an outcry that shook the moon from it's shadow.
" I dun wan it " ! the line that killed all things, that could have been...
that part of the show doesn't exist to me
I have a feeling this video is about to explode while people try to make sense of the HBO series.
damn this show gonna be juicy, cant wait to see what they do different and what they keep
Amazing work as usual.
Thanks🙏
I just watched this entire video slowly and absorbed all the details. I'm so excited to watch all this unfold in the next seasons to come! Viserys is basically the referee that is keeping the destruction from being unleashed.
I really hope they do the war justice. I’d love to see all the battles especially with the budget now.

Awesome recap… I didn’t read the books so this was really helpful 😊
Are you watching the show? I’m really wondering if the showrunners intend to have Alicent be the villain like she is in the books. They have framed her far more sympathetic so far.... though it’s only been 1 episode
@@corvus2512 I am but it’s early yet… I think a Alicent will be a villain for sure

the show will be confusing af. every season new kids will pop up like its nobodies business and then we are supposed to feel connected to them when they die within 2 episodes. i can already tell, the saddest episode will be the collapse of the dragonpit and the death of multiple dragons.

GRRM: [interrupting] KERMIT!
I know everyone is incredibly heartbroken over what happens to Helaena but I'm over here crying over the Dragons in the pit 😭😭😭
They killed thousands don’t worry lol
Watching this after S02E08 I’m not waiting another 2 years 😂
Otto was right when he told Viserys to wed Rhaenyra to Aegon.
Otto created this by wanting an alliance with the crown. Instead both Viseys and Rhaenyra should have remained unwed
I love watching these!!! You do an amazing job!
Kings gotta learning how to surrender their crown to their heir will still alive. Imagine if viserys did that, while sick, he simply gave up his crown to his daughter, there wouldn’t be any problem!
