During the war in Bosnia,I was listening Dire Straits like crazy.I was trying to replace horror and fear with art. These guys didn't save my life but they did safe my soul.Forever thankful
You are totally right . Soldier to soldier , you have my respect. Person don't have to be born in USA to respect your service. Stay strong and God bless
every memorial day I play these two great songs ride across the river and brother in arms! in honor of the fallen! where ever they live! and where ever they die! in the service of countries that send them knowing they might not return back to there homes and loved ones!
An truly original piece from the great Dire Straits. With incredibly tight guitar that is as exquisite as the finest silk & a rhythm & melody that wraps it up, it makes for one of the most iconic tunes from D.S & from the 80's. I'm yet to hear anything anywhere close to this tune - in 2019. Where & when the hell did real music lose so much?
Some of the best guitar music ever I'm 65 and still love this song and will share every chance I get. Youth now in these days don't understand great music. So just share away as I do and spread the music of the greats.
Im 61. And love dire straits. I of course love the guitar, but the trumpet.. it makes this one my favorite dire straits song.. I share every time I listen to it.. Which has been at least once a week lately. I crave it.
Yes that's right!!! the musical part after the last chorus is the best piece of Pop music I know.. this sound in 1985 was.. crazy, amazing, unbelievable !!
Muitos anos passaram... Até que surja algum outro gênio que consiga fazer um arranjo tão perfeito como esse, com tanta sintonia!! Momento único de espiritualidade e criatividade...
In this song, the Yamaha DX7 ROM-1A patch “Tub Bells” and internal patch “Steel Drums” and the Yamaha DX7 ROM-1A patch “Tub Bells” mixed with the Yamaha DX7 internal patch “Bass 1” were heard.
I like the tune and song very much when I see last ship and I get fan of it and want to intract with all the people in episode .I m from india. ❤️❤️❤️🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
me encontrei em espírito e corpo na reserva de pedra talhada em 1988, onde hoje possuo um terreno lá graças a essa sinfonia de métrica quase impossível na bateria.vou morrer véio no mato, graças a essa música...
great post and glad to be the first to comment. this track always stood out for me from a very iconic album full of quality..this was always my favourite track and still is. this absolutely typifies not only the musical genius of this man, but also his magical lyrical ability which is spread over the decades. this so illustrates todays modern fractured world where everything has its price, even life itself...I have followed Mark Knopflers career since first discovering Dire Straits in the late seventies. I am lucky enough to have a ticket to see him this summer at the Royal Albert Hall...thanks again doroty66...!
Bryan Ladden I love mark knopfler but this haunting song is a particular favourite cuz it resonates with my experiences in the 80's when I lived through a civil war with the U.S. supporting a repressive state in my country. This song eerily captures those times, a testament to his genius. And the river was deep and wide, a raging torrent like the dangerous times, the land and its people.
I always think of the Contra rebels in Nicaragua when I hear this song as at the time this album was released it was one of the major conflicts in the world. Could we have guessed that at the time the US was supplying them with arms funded by the profits of drugs being brought into the US from Colombia.
Washington's army on one side (soldier of freedom), Hessions on the other (soldier of fortune). That's what I think this song is about. Change my mind.
@Thomas-gu4ll perhaps but you are wrong that it's a mercenary. He's describing both in two separate lines. "I'm a soldier of freedom in the army of the man, we are the chosen we're the partizan". Then "I'm a soldier of fortune, I'm a dog of war". If he wasn't intentionally describing Washington's river crossing of the Delaware to take the Hessian camp of mercenaries by surprise, he nailed it to a T anyway when he wrote the lyrics.
This has and will continue since man learned he could hurt another and kill him. It will continue forever cause there is always someone with greed and power seeking.

Verdade! Os jovens de hoje não sabem o que é música!
Probably the best guitar playing and sound production you will ever hear.
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour share this accomplishment.
Guitar and Sax

Same here dude.. God visited him in those times..
I think soldiers and veterans can enjoy these songs more
Thinking of my Dad, he was a hero both in Glasgow Scotland and in North Korea.
Really digging the emotion of these tunes!
This one gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's haunting.

Bring back sad memories*
Lauren Wallace For me too. I lived through the times that mark sings about. Dangerous times.
Good song en good lyrics
Very mystical song 🎤😊🌻🌐👏
Have you heard the new live album from Dire Straits bassist John Illsley? It features Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing and Romeo and Juliet...
A song for the times.
Great band
E questa me la porto con me, sempre e per sempre nel mio cuore ❤️

Essa música é a melhor da banda.
Best of the best,

I'll leave it at that
Agreed
I think very few people connect which decisive ambush in the American Revolution this song is about.
Battle of Trenton
@@alexmason2659 I don't know if that's what they intended but it sure sounds like the story they're telling to me?

mega
There's no flutes in this. It is keyboard, and possibly steel drum. No flute.
Wrong. Flute is definitely instrument played. Don't believe me? Watch it live on youtube.
The lyrics don't match. The text is what the song should have said, but what they sing is what they meant.
😂❤😂
Great playing but mediocre singing by Mark on this album. Band of my life, however.
BS go listen to fergie or some other crap
