This was my fiance's favorite band long before they were anybody. He had amazing taste and foresight in music. I lost him to a self inflicted gunshot wound back in the day when depression was so poorly understood and treated. It has been 40 years and I've never found a love like what we had since but I can play a Dire Straits song and he's so alive for me once again. I love u Rob wherever u r and pray you've found the happiness that eluded u in life. I will c u again I'm sure of it. Thanks for posting this

Communique is so overlooked, but for me it is the essence of Knopfler and Dire Straits.

I really fell in love with your poetic image relating you at your 60s with a goat that listens to this fucking amazing song and then, as if by alchemy, is metamorphosed into a white buffalo. If you have never though about becaming a poet... man.. hurry up!
P.s.: I live in Brazil and I am an english teacher and also a literature professor.
I know what I am talking about. Believe me! May God keep His hand open over your head. 🌻

Their debut broke the disco stronghold and created a huge rock following

    • @tullfan7872

Could be. Dire Straits debuted in the same year as Disco reached its height in 1978. But the monotonous disco influence (Michael Jackson, Donna Summer etc) was still so potent it killed off a lot of other music until the mid-1980s. Strong rock bands like Dire Straits, Jethro Tull and Roxy Music were immune and there were a few other spots of brilliance here and there, but lots of other bands struggled and lots died in the early 80s. The arrival of popular acts like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna gave the last rights to disco.

Rock already had a huge following, Stones, Queen, The Ramones, Aerosmith, The Clash etc. The issue was simply the radio stations were catering to the new sound of disco.
