Bought the reel, loaded it with Asso Hard Skin 20lb and Asso 15-60lb tapered leader but cut the massive 15m leader down to 11m by removing line from both ends. Slackened the spool end tensioner until there was a little bit of side play and made first cast with mags full on. Lovely cast, next one backed the mags off 2 clicks, still smooth as silk. Third cast backed the mags off another 2 clicks and 6oz and bait still flew out trouble free. I am now consistently using it with the mags backed off to half and only change the setting if I am casting into a headwind. It’s a lovely multiplier and very friendly for someone who wants to move on from fixed spool.
I do enjoy watching your videos... I have the Penn Fathom 2 Special Casting which is really nice reel that I actually sold my Diawa 7ht Mag blue and bought another fathom 2 CS. My reels are loaded with 30lb daiwa hyper sensor and these are paired up with Century TT Supermatch Graphex for an all round setup. I now use this setup for clean to light rough ground and it covers my 99% fishing situations
I bought one a few weeks ago just on spec as Angler Direct had a flash sale and priced them at £70. I bought the smaller capacity one for boat fishing. Nice reel.
Bought a pair of these on offer for 99.99 each a cpl of months ago. Loaded up with 0.38mm line and a 70lb leader, once the bearings are cleaned out properly and oiled up, they cast like a dream. Can get well over 100yds with a baited pennel rig on a TDXS 133PM👍👍
I'm the same with tackle, I'm sure scratched rods and dirty reels catch more fish anyway. If the handle still turns the spool then it works fine. Daiwa SL20SH or X20SHA for rougher ground and shorter casts, and Daiwa 7HTs for distance fishing and clean ground. I'd be surprised if you could ever break a SL20SH tbf
I really wanted a mag 4, but they’re not available as a leftie. I went with Akios Shuttles instead. They are nice smooth reels, & are pretty forgiving on the cast. I would put myself in the average caster bracket, ut I can’t really tell too much difference with the mag fully on or off, until I hit a good cast, on the odd occasion. The annoying thing is that, despite carefully rinsing with fresh water after every use, & a light wipe with WD40, they are starting to show some signs of corrosion, even after only about a year. Enjoy your new reel, & tight lines.
This was so interesting! I have a pair of slosh20's for heavy ground, a pair of Shimano Speedmasters (mag braked) and a pair of Penn 515 mag3's....the Penn's have 15lb line and tapered leaders, very happy with them. Shimano's are my favourite though😎...yes I'm a tackle tart😳
Got a pair of the 515 mag 4's and a pair of the 525 mag 4's, nice reels. Also got the Kenzaki beach rod but not had a chance to use it yet. Try the asso ultra cast, much better line than the hardskin.
There great reels mate .. perfect for beginners... I done a video when it 1st come out on them ... just take the blue grease out as they put to much in there lol ...
Anyone find that the reel is harder to turn on the wind in than other multipliers? As in its hard to turn the handle fast and it feels stiffer compared to my slosh, and older 525s. Its as if the oil is thicker or something preventing me to wind fast. This is on 2 new reels I've purchased, same as the video. Cheers
Hi Mat got a 525 /4 for Xmas last year absolutely gorgeous smooth and silent even Keith Baker was impressed , my only criticism is the spool doesn't re engage on the handle .I suspect this is to prevent crack offs in casting it's a great uptide reel providing you are ok with thumb laydown . I'm looking to trying it on the beach matched with a verrchelli oxegine . New give me a call if you want to film it💯👍
Maybe one day I will give a multiplier a go, always been put off by horror stories of birds nests. CheersMatt you’re review has made me think and with the magnets I may take the plunge.
Set them up properly (loads of info online on how to) and take it easy with a nice smooth cast rather than thrashing it and you'll get on just fine. One thing with multipliers though compared to a fixed spool, is that the cheaper ones are absolute pants. Dont go for a new abu, they are absolutely awful as far as quality goes. Akios, Penn and Daiwa are 10 times the quality of an abu. The akios reels may looks similar but they are a much higher quality👍
Hi mate. I got the 525 mag 4. Cracking reel on my Leeda icon m power sport. Absolutely flies with just an off the ground cast. Only just doing basic pendulum casts and with the brakes halfway off it's singing. I've also got a Akios Airpower435 srs rod teamed up with the F15 nitron. To be honest my favourite is the Akios set up . That's only my opinion but I get slightly more distance with 435 and F15 . Cheers Cracking video as always. Regards Paul 🎣 🎣 🎣
Ive been the other way around tbh. Started off years ago as a kid with a shakespeare fixed spool reel. Couldnt cast it smoothly so brought an abu 6500 elite. From that point onwards, the only time i use a fixed spool is for fishing lures with 20lb braid, and for carp fishing. I just can't get on with them for beach fishing or uptiding at all lol
Just an update. My Penn 515 broke after buying it last October. The gear mechanism packed in. Rather disappointing as I had bought another one as was so impressed with. Penn replaced the reel after a few weeks. No correspondences from them or Angling Direct and as I I couldn’t be without a reel for an unspecified period I bought an Okuna?
Penn 525 4mag is European version of the Penn Squall II SDCS "Casting Special" with the Knobby mag. Penn also put out one that Far surpasses that one and it's the Penn Fathom II SDCS about a 25% or so increase in cost vs Squall II. But the Fathom II 15SDCS has a Metal Frame not Graphite like the 525 or Squall. It will Cast and smooth like Butter haha.. Squall II 15 SDCS is an excellent budget Surf casting reel whereas the Fathom II is it's big Brother haha.. More sturdy and higher quality. All three are excellent reels tho.
This was always a reel I thought about for a beach caster. I was recommended the Daiwa Millionare HT mag or the Abu Ambassador depending on casting leads. I got a Penn Slammer 3 about 3 weeks ago and a Major Craft Triple Cross lure rod last week. Waiting on Major Craft Braid from Lure Candy. Dying to get a cast, I’ve been saving up for this gear for months. Been on a Savage Gear LRF lure rod for 2 year and have been wanting to step up to a bigger lure rod for a while. Hoping to get a good cast before the dark nights roll in and the weather changes for the winter
The 6500 reels (NOT the recent made in china crap) the Akios 656 reels and the Daiwa 7HT reels are all well and good for casting, in fact theyre excellent for beach casting. The 515 and Fathom 12 reels have almost the same capacity, (the 525 and 15 size have a bit better capacity aling with the Slosh20) and are far, far tougher reels better for the fishing side of it, and only a very slight reduction in casting distance, not that you'd ever notice it on a beach.
I was snapped a finger off and inside it read A B U. Then one day a guy sold me two Penn 515 mag 3,s. Uprated the bearings and OMG I'm sorry Abu but after 50years my 6500,s are now reserve reels. Superb reels.
I've got every Penn mag and i rate them... Penn mag 1 9/10.... Penn mag 2 6/10.... Penn mag 3 4/10... penn mag 4 7/10. i must say the fathoms are much better than the newest penn mags
Hi Matt, I changed from a Diawa Millionaire to the sonik AVX 10,000 same as the one you were using, I’m missing my multiplier but don’t want to go back to using mono as I really like braid, can’t make my mind up, which do you prefer?
Braid for me , just got used to the snappier casting and that direct contact makes me not want to go back. The only thing is cost that keeps me on mono at times
@@SaltwaterAngler thanks for that, that’s made my mind up for sure, think I’ll use the 7hts every now and then for a change. But I won’t bother spending out on newer multipliers. Thanks, saved me a few quid 👍
Excellent video I would love to get one of those,I'd have to get one from overseas as they aren't available in Australia. The Fathom 25 is readily available and would be way cheaper for me to get one of those.Im assuming it would be as good.Whats your opinion? Cheer mate keep up the great work!

Open it up get rid of the factory heavy duty grease and replace with rocket fuel oil makes it miles better
Cheers Chris
Excellent video pal. Nice little fish too

Nice reel as usual fan to watch thanks for the shearing

Yes 👍 for the ultra cast thanks Jason
515 mag 4 paired with a diwa 14,2 ft multi sandstorm a dream
Has anyone had any problems with the brakes. I did a cast and the went ping. Now the knob where you turn it keeps going round?
Brakes slow but reliable on mine
Nice looking Reel, great review Matt! I do love Penn gear but can't get on with multipliers so I'll stick to my Surfblaster! Stay safe & well! 👍👍
Hi Dave , cool man good old surf blaster !
Good reels Matt, I bought one recently as a backup, still got USA made Penn 525 supermag, they last years in all conditions with a little tlc 😀
Very cool!
There great reels mate .. perfect for beginners... I done a video when it 1st come out on them ... just take the blue grease out as they put to much in there lol ...

Interesting point here, thanks will think about this on my next retrieves
get the factory blue grease out replace with rocket oil I got 2 mag 4s
I will do I think because although it’s smooth and easy it doesn’t zip off the spool yet thanks

Nice reel. I tried multipliers years ago. Never really got on with them. Prefer my fixed spools. 🎣
Fixed spools easier ofcourse but there’s something about having that reel close to the rod makes for better balance to fish and cast
