Thresher Sharks are an incredible creature that migrate around the British isles hunting their prey, they are high speed agile hunters using their huge scything tail to stun prey. These sharks can be anything from 50lb to 500lb in our waters and are considered by some to be the UK's most sought after sport fish.

One of your best videos John. What a fish that was! As you said, a solo angler couldn't attempt to land a beast that size, just too powerful. You both did really well to give us some great footage of that lovely animal, thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and the family.

Thank you very much. Yes these fish will test you on every level and push you for a mistake. There is always a chance I could have stopped it if I had taken a wrap around my hand but also a chance it would have taken my hand or me over the side. Given the challenge we were up against I am not unhappy with what happened. Lessons learned for next time. Best wishes to you and your family Mike and have a lovely Christmas. 😊🦈🎄

You captured some amazing footage, the speed and power of that shark was awesome.
Never seen footage of how a thresher primes it’s tail to strike.
As you said you need to be totally focused and ready to react in a split second. Your friend did a fantastic job in fighting the fish and your boat handling skills were top notch in positioning the craft throughout the fight.
    Fantastic video thank you.

I once landed a Thresher 25 miles out of Montauk, but the boat was much bigger and I was a young man (took forever to fight that fish). The captain had everyone go inside when he brought it aboard. Holy moly, that thing threshed that tail and with blood flying everywhere. Captain wanted to keep it as the the shops pay big bucks for the tail ... supposedly medicinal properties(?). The shark steaks were very tasty. But Jim would have cooked it up better than I did ! All the best

Hi John many moons ago along with some mates we booked a trip with a skipper called Ted Legge out of Gosport for thresher we were lucky enough to hook one briefly Ted had a method of putting the boat in gear when leadering the fish his theory was that the fish do not like to be motionless. Cracking fish looks like similar area to one we raised on a tuna trip back in October.

    • @TheFishLocker

That was awesome, thanks for sharing with us, have seen a common thresher, caught in a trawl net on the dogger bank in the 60s, about 20 ft long, extremely powerful fish to have flailing around the deck in rough weather, and dangerous, went over the side real quick !!

Yes, a closer look but in the water still. Dale, you may get away with it in the US but we may potentially lose shark fishing over here soon, if the powers that be get their way, so they need to stay in the water, fully supported, before reviving and letting go… 👍🏻

That was nuts! My largest caught Spring salmon was 87lbs, and it took almost 45mins, but yet a 27lb steelhead took over an hour to land(keep in mind those are all caught in rivers, so walking the banks is a must).

@@TheFishLocker steelhead are ocean trout yes, but a lake called bear lake in northwest bc hosts the largest lake trout(rainbow) in a size average of 15lb, and record is 19lb. I caught a 15lb and loved the fight. Sat at a mouth of a creek, and in 12 seconds of first cast, hooked it. All catch and released

I have rarely seen anything so exciting in terms of catches from your boat, yes the catch of the bleu-fin tuna that was also a very exciting catch, but this is something completely different and also requires a very own technique of landing the fish Cris Have you fished it yet John? because it also comes across as very calm in terms of fishing for it, calm and yet always alert to what is coming, but this shows that you just have to be with two of you on these fish if you want to land this, but fantastic to watch thanks for sharing and if there is anything else to comewe see it differently from this side a nice new year and a good and healthy new year to you your friends and fam regards Willem
