- Amtrak's westbound Sunset Limited crosses the Huey P. Long bridge while leaving the Big Easy (New Orleans). We pass a Union Pacific Manifest train as we descend back on to land.
I was raised in New Orleans and as a young child I remember crossing the Huey P Long Bridge ging to my Uncle's house 🏠 in Harahan, La. There were no trains breaking down on this Bridge.
Now imagine the train breaks down and everybody has to leave the train and walk ale the way from the middle of the bridge... Awesome movie, though, thanks for sharing! Cheers from Poland!
They’d shove a flatcar or two up there and give everyone an open-air thrill ride for the inconvenience.

Nice to see the old traffic lanes, yes 2, and the new ramps and lanes. Never been across after the expansion. Great video, will be historical one day.
My first train ride was this high ass shit right here.... Caught it home after moving a friend to new Orleans via uhaul and car.... It was a 3 hour ride on the train.
In the 90's one of my coworkers mentioned he had a brother working for the NOPB (New Orleans Public Belt Railway) as a painter. NOPB maintains the Huey P. Long bridge. The paint crew's work is perpetual. The job is never complete. There is always an area of the bridge needing repainting. There is another remarkable bridge on the Sunset Route, the Pecos High Bridge, 209 miles west of San Antonio (321 feet high).
Absolutely yes 👍🏼👍🏼 ! That Pecos River bridge is magnificent . I once heard that there were about 2000 Chinese laborers who built it. I think it was completed around 1906 ? It’s another engineering marvel , high enough to be scary. 😊😊

On my first trip over the Huey P Long the eastbound Sunset Ltd was hours behind schedule and not priority traffic for local train dispatchers. We experienced frequent delays over the last 50 miles and spent close to an hour up on this bridge, with about a half dozen stops on the high iron. At around the 4:00 in this video you see how far above ground we are, imagine being stopped in that location for 10 minutes. It was nerve-racking enough that fellow passengers began drawing closed the window curtains.
I rode an Amtrak over that bridge in 2019 and it scared me to death!

The Sunset Limited averages about 25mph. It takes more time to travel between New Orleans & Los Angeles today that it did in the 1800's when a steam train first ran the route. I got to ride the Limited at 80mph from the AZ/CA border to Palm Springs in 2009, low traffic at that time. A fast ride never happened before or again. Imagine the fluidity of travel if there were enough tracks for travel in both directions :) If you didn't realize it, most of this Amtrak route is on a track that passes trains in both directions. Trains starting & stopping to play leap-frog really slows down the travel time. In the 90's I rode the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Lame, NM. The ride through Kansas was in part at 100mph. Amtrak long distance routes could be quick with proper track on the routes.
Track speeds have been designed for freight; passenger trains are second-class according to most railroad[way] management.

I've driven across this bridge by car 30 years ago.. scary as hell with a big train on it. You can feel the bridge move! It shakes and sways.

Longest train bridge in United States we also have the longest automobile bridge in United States which is the causeway here in Jefferson Parish Louisiana(greater New Orleans)
Ironically longest train bridge and automobile bridge are both here in the same parish which is like a county another states

Excellent video have heard of this bridge and been in New Orleans but not by train. Looks like this monster must be 20 miles long or so because of the danger of the Mississippi Flooding this area during the spring or during hurricanes. Amazing,thanks for sharing. By the way, 'm a native of Los Angeles and the RR fly over crosses over,among other things, The Los Angeles River which is a little narrower than the Great Mississippi that was referred to by another admirer of this work. Everything about this bridge is notable,including its name!
The railroad portion of the bridge is 22,996 feet long. The bridge was originally planned to be a railroad only bridge. They're in the process of widening the highway portion of it. It's 153ft above the Mississippi River to allow maritime traffic to pass underneath it.
JetMechMA Trains run in opposite directions at the same time with no problem. The bridge was originally gonna be a railroad only bridge. The highway lanes were an addition after the bridge was in the construction phase.

While the bridge itself and its approaches are not in the best shape, the bridge's foundations in the Mississippi river rest on a compacted sand and silt stratum 160-170 feet below mean water level in the Gulf, so it is erroneous to claim that all the ground has been washed away from under the piers.

no kidding dude, we kind of figured all those buildings poking up were new orleans, those amtrak people go a little crazy when they get a microphone in their hand, it would be one of the advantages of being a def person, a condensed message would be, watch your kids and keep all your clothes on as you would at a friends house, welcome aboard

Yes, the Sunset Limited is an Amtrak passenger train which operates between Los Angeles and New Orleans. I think we're riding a westbound in this video.
What is the speed limit on this bridge? 20? It seems like it takes forever to get across it. Oh I know it is long but I don't see where they could rais it 10 to 30.
Charles Ramsey it's actually not that long. This bridge is OLD. And it wasn't built to withstand the amount of traffic it gets today. I lived in Louisiana my entire life and know many who refuse to drive over this bridge.
The rail bridge is 4.35 miles long and well over 100’ high in sections. It's an excellent test for acrophobia.

At the time, the bridge was in the final stages of a widening project. The bridge was built in 1935 and hadn't really been worked on until then.
The widening was needed for decades. Notice the narrow vehicle lanes with very little room for error. It took nerves to drive over the "Huey"!

Good God!!! This is crazy scary. I'm someone who's afraid to fly, but this is just as bad. From 0:40 thru 6:00 there is absolutely NO reinforcement on the sides of the ramp. If the damn train derails (like the Amtrak accident in Chicago of 1977; the Chicago Loop) the cars would tumble at LEAST 5 (or MORE) stories below to their demise. From 6:00 thru 7:02 is not so bad. But 8:34 thru 16:06 is HORRENDOUS!!! I would NEVER leave OR enter New Orleans by Amtrack. Smdh!...

In 2015, there was a train derailment from this bridge due to high winds from a severe storm. It wasn't at the highest point, and only freight cars fell so nobody was hurt. It's really something to behold.
