Key take away here: if any city needs to reduce it's traffic speed buy a BigBoy, works better than any other traffic management system looking at the traffic. Fantastic video, and great to see such an amazing machine running.

While there were many photo opportunities to be had, as the steam train rolls into N.O. there are those idiots who stopped on the highway, and parked in a travel lane. No respect for anyone else. You all know we Brits are a bit daft about steam locomotives and you maybe know we often have steam excursions running on our mainline. Although they are limited to 75mph, they can and do go faster, but basically they hold up much faster passenger trains behind them. So we are kind of used to spectacular steam in Britain. But I have to say, #4014 on that damn bridge was AWESOME!
While I haven't seen one in steam (4014) I have stood on the footplate of a Big Boy. #4005 in Denver over thirty years ago and, as an engineer, I know a bit about the UP x4000. They have been among my all time favourite locomotives for many years. Just the specification for their design takes your breath away; Able to take a 9000 ton freight over Sherman Hill........ on its own!
Now a question of semantics. Was this the first time in history a UP X4000 has crossed the Mississippi? (Which I can believe.) Not just the first time 4014 has crossed it? Or the first time a UP 4000 has visited New Orleans (because it occurs to me 4014 might have crossed the Mississippi way further north on her 'Grand Tour'.)

They all had to cross the Mississippi on their initial delivery (not under steam). UP 4012 crossed it when it was delivered to Steamtown in PA. UP 4014 crossed it again (the first time under steam for the 4000 class) in 2019.

@@karlrovey - Strictly speaking Big Boy wasn't under it's own steam either...
The diesel is doing the work - The steam Big Boy is kicking out is hardly noticeable, not 10% of what a steam loco climbing a gradient would give off... 😉

@@BassandoForte The diesel is in idle here.... The 4014 is capable of taking a 4000 ton train over the bridge approaches. It's not going to take much effort to keep a 1500 ton train rolling at 8 mph.

One thing for sure while 4014 was on this 4.36 mile long bridge, everyone stayed at least 25 feet back from the track.

You can't. The travel lanes are adjacent to the railroad track.

That thing is so majestic. I can't stop watching your videos. There's just something about the connecting rods going back and forth. QUESTION: what is the steam/water dumping overboard just forward of the rear cylinder? I think I knew steam trains had to purge their cylinders of condensation before moving off, but not while in motion

With its long approaches the Huel Long Bridge used to be the longest railroad bridge over a river in the world. Is it still?
