I have driven under, past, and over this bridge nearly every day since 1992. So much familiar in this video and yet so much new. I always wondered what it would look like from the standpoint of a train, thanks so much for posting this.
In case you're new to this bridge, it represents one of the great engineering feats in America, Originally the roadways on either side were quite narrow, but as it turned out upon close inspection, the bridge was so over-engineered, as they say, that all the superstructure was widened without having to alter the piers, etc. Wow!
Having driven over the bridge prior to the construction, during construction, and after--I'll emphasize the word NARROW. My mom hated that drive--for her it was such a white knuckle drive--especially if there was an 18-wheeler along side you!
@@trainerfjk6269 How about when the train 🚂 crossed in the center of the bridge and made the bridge on either side where cars drove bounce. Those were some white knuckle moments driving on that bridge pre-renovations.
What a fantastic piece of engineering. …amazing super structure. Seems like that trestle goes on for miles and miles. I recall when We took the Crescent it was a highlight of our trip to go over that long expanse of the H P Long Bridge
I traveled across this bridge in 2010 on an amtrak train. That being said, I use to live 2 miles away from this bridge. Also, I forgot what year but a strong wind knocked a train off of this bridge. It might of happened in 2012 - 2014 and there is a video of it on UA-cam. It happened in Elmwood area of Jefferson Parish
My wife lived in Gretna Lousiana when she was a little girl. She still talks about how driving across the "Huey P" used to scare the bejesus out of her and her siblings...
I noticed that the old "SP" style searchlight or target signals have been replaced with the tri-color signals. Further, the overhead spans over the river proper, supporting the rail line have not been painted to match the newer supports over the reconstructed highway. I imagine that the New Orleans Public Belt Railway still owns the rail bridge structure. NOPB at one time had their own full time paint crew responsible for painting the rail bridge and maybe they still do.
Nicely done here, I assume from the back of the Sunset Limited. It is probably the only bridge whose most interesting feature is the approaches. They widened it at some time. There was originally only one highway lane on earth side.
Back in 1992-1993, I used to drive across that bridge, and it was only 2 lanes, and we are talking very narrow lanes, and I would hope and pray that I wouldn't get stuck next to a SEMI, because it would always feel that I would fall right over the edge. I see in this video that it has gotten bigger.
An amazing video of a train traversing an amazing piece of engineering/architecture. Enjoyed that, and glad to have experienced it here, since I've never been to New Orleans. I wonder how deep the water is there?
I remember European long bread I remember to have track how you go to the West Bank I used to deliver to the West Bank called the Riverwalk I've been 31 years ago calvin from Mobile Alabama
Hey I can just get a little bit of a little bit more of the stuff in my car I will pick up my mom tomorrow morning and I can just park you there and pick up the stuff for you and I’ll park on your house tomorrow night thank you so much for you
Man I remember when a severe thunderstorm not a train off the Huey p 😬 I found the video, but man that’s a big fall actually. ua-cam.com/video/U7WfeV01A4g/v-deo.html

warren wilson this and the 8mile tunnel in Washington state
Pretty sure they widened the piers too. Still an amazing engineering job
Jerry Evans they didn’t actually

thank you for posting this. I enjoy watching this video from time to time. it is very relaxing and so much to see.😎
Very very cool. I love this bridge and the rest of the ride on the train. Good job

Yeah I grew up in Westwego. That damn thing would sway and creak especially when two trains were up there during rush hour.

I rode it at night: Thanks for this.

Thanks for the ride. Impressive.
What a collosal bridge! It dwarfs everything that crosses it!
What a great idea, combining railroad and road crossings to save money

Beautiful scenery when going through the bridge . I am not scared of bridges!
Never knew that thing was so massive!!

Lots of people don't know this bridge was named after governor Huey pierce long. and my daddy was named after this governor.!!!!!!!
amazing,what a remarkable structure
Thank you, enjoyed the ride.
Would someone be so kind as to tell me what those things are at 5:10, 5:18, 5:28 & 5:40?
I was wondering the same thing . . .
Rail Expansion Joints.
ByronDuhe said it correctly! Rails CAN expand and contract with the heat and the cold.
Every man a bridge.
Okay thank you so much
Now that’s a bridge

I used to be real nervous crossing that bridge 😂
super video .................
i drove from Las Angeles to Daytona Florida via this bridge on interstate 10 in my car.. i am from upstate NY
What happens if you have a derailment on the bridge?
It happenned
The extra set of rails inside the normal rails adds some protection during a derailment.
