Part 4: • Tavis Smiley on Becomi...
Part 1: • Tavis Smiley on Being ...
    --------
In this clip, Tavis Smiley spoke in-depth about the nature of his 20+ year friendship with the late-great Prince. Tavis recounted how they became friends after Prince pursued him for a conversation about things in the realm of racial justice and politics. Tavis said they immediately became close through their love of conversation and intellectual exchange.
Later in the clip, Tavis confirmed that Quincy Jones tried getting Prince and Micheal Jackson to collaborate on Michael’s song ‘Bad.’ However, that never happened because Prince couldn’t get past one line that Michael was to sing.

PRINCE has been my all-time favorite artist for most of my life!
I'm a middle-aged MAN, and I still have a poster of this cat that I purchased in the summer of 1983, on Hollywood Blvd, when I was seventeen. A couple of years ago, I had it touched up, framed, protected from harmful UV rays, and mounted on my wall.
It's from my favorite album, 1999. Which was released in 1982. That's when he became my favorite artist.
What Tavis said about PRINCE loving his Black people, doesn't surprise me. I've said that on UA-cam before and a lot of people hated that comment.
People had the audacity to say that he didn't see color. That he was beyond color.
That's fuckin' ridiculous and pretentious! I love ALL good people in this world. But I have to start by loving my family first. Biological or otherwise. Which are my Black people.
Without loving your people, you can't love yourself!
PRINCE always helped his fellow Black musicians from Minneapolis from day one! His biggest influences were Black musical geniuses. His first audience and fans were all Black, long before white people knew who he was! He also kept his music funky as hell! His songs and music, spoke to our inner souls as Black people. Like the griots of Africa. And he also spoke about Black history and empowerment.
So it was good to hear Tavis Smiley confirm this.
RIP PRINCE. YOU CHANGED MY LIFE.

@@horrorpowerfilms9481 Evidently, you are either too young or unaware of the REAL LIFE story behind the song “Bad”. Michael wrote that song based on a young man from the street and gang life, who went to a private school/college to get away from his street life. He came home for Christmas break and his old gang friends convinced him to get back into the gang. He was killed by the police while trying to do a gang hit. Michael wanted to collaborate with Prince. Prince didn’t want to do it and it worked out even better with Wesley Snipes in the video. FTR, the fact that Prince didn’t do the song was the BEST thing that could have happened for Michael and the song. It was a hit anyway, as Prince supposedly predicted it would be.

So ridiculous, funny and absurd. "Michael Jackson's album was only called Bad because there wasn't enough room on the sleeve for Pathetic.” - Prince. Majoring in pychology and studying the mind it makes me think what was he doing and or going through to come up with such nonsense. Listening to the song one with good sense would know it's NOTHING SEXUAL ABOUT IT!

Chris Rock interviewed Prince and told that exact story about MJ. Hilarious and Chris cracked up. I am a fan of both Prince and MJ. I admired Prince more because "he decided" as a youth to become a musician...Michael was put into music by his dad and did whT he needed and became great. Prince, as a kid, practiced instruments and mastered them. Was already a great dancer and figured out the music business on his own(met the right people who showed him what was whT). That...to me is so admirable. And his music is beyond awesome to this day. He created enough for everyone to listen to for a lifetime. It never gets old.

By the time Prince breakthrough into the mainstream, MJ and his brothers were THE privilege family of show business, they had every door open for them and every string to pull. They were a generic (talented) boy band, forced to sing hit written by others. They were PUT into the Motown Making Money machine, sad.

Prince didn't have anyone standing over him with a belt waiting for him to mess up. His dad had some input but most of Prince's work ethic was self motivated & look at what he was able to achieve as a young teen.
Yes I'm sure the Jackson's wanted to do music but I'm not sure how much of that was initially inspired by their own self interest, excluding Michael,he had to do music. There's this line in the American Dream, where Katherine said to Joe "is this their dream or yours"
