  • Their musical collaborations lit up the world's music charts for over a decade in the 1980s, but all of a sudden Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones ceased their working relationship would never record together ever again.
Little has been said to explain the infinite split, but it has since been revealed that fame, money and success granted them great blessings, but also tensions began to boil up between the two. Causing a lasting rift that damaged their once close bond.

I would agree with you except there is something Q said in that interview here. Trying to say Michael was stealing music. I couldn't belive Q would try to throw shade like that. Here's the facts, using Q himself as evidence, there is no way Michael stole music from others. Do you know how I know in fact thats a lie? Quincy. Period! Quincy being the artist he is, the type of producer he was, Q would never ever sign his name to anything like that. Q has far too much respect for his craft. As did Michael. That was why those songs they did was so powerful.

You can do that with star-struck newcomers or unknown producers, maybe even with someone less successful but Quincy was well established before "Off the Wall". As great as MJ was, those albums with QJ were collaborations. Mike was not Q's equal in the studio. Very few will ever be.... Quincy Jones put the full weight of his experience in those records and a skilled ear can hear it. It was a team situation and Q had a team assembled in his projects that preceded his MJ era recordings. He used some of the same personal on MJ's work. Exactly. MJ had the focus of publishing ownership. QJ thought MJ was rather young and naive to be thinking along those lines. QJ did not want the headaches probably. Sure, MJ had successful albums and had become a superstar but Owning vast amounts of publishing? Nah. Owning Sony publishing? Nope. It happened. MJ owned all of Sony Publishing when he bought ATV and ATV merged with Sony. MJ owned 500k songs but also owned the Beatles, Dylan, Elvis [marriage to Lisa makes a bit more sense because she owned Graceland and fifteen percent of Elvis catalog] MJ also owned Cher, Springstein and Eminem; and purchased Graceland in 1988.
Visualize that, it’s almost a fantasy if it had not actually happened.
Forbes called it “the greatest catalog in existence”. In 2010 MJ earned $275 million - that’s more than Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna and Jay-Z COMBINED - despite the fact that he was no longer alive. This is why in great part QJ & MJ split. MJ was pursuing publishing ownership, Lifetime legendary status, brand and generational wealth. David Geffen said he was one of the smartest artists he ever did business with and wished that MJ could have held back spending $30M in the ranch and furnishings. Artists in general did not understand exactly how much he was doing in paving the way for future artist publishing ownership deals and that even though he just looked like a quirky artist because all artists are actors MJ was very business smart. After death his Estate still owns the rights to his original master recordings all the way back to the Jackson Five, unreleased songs and unreleased solo songs. So the trial was directly about all of that past, current and future wealth.
      I cannot imagine.

What I don't like is Q talking trash about Mike years later just because they grew apart creatively. It's like a relationship between a man and a woman; sometimes people grow apart, but in the end, you should still respect them. He said Mike stole a lot of things; well, every artist borrows things here and there. It's normal to be highly influenced, but to say Mike was not original is pure BS. I mean, why to mention his appearance when Quincy was music producer but not his makeup artist or his doctor. Even though, he did it because of trauma of childhood, how does it really influence the fact that he was and still is the greatest of all time musician. Sometimes I believe people aren't able to look at these two parts separately. We all have our issues, come in, have we ever been under so much pressure publicly. I still can't get it, it's 21 century already! And we know all facts! Being so much abused by his nasty father, it was a miracle he could present us his brilliant music and songs and not committed suicide. While working on wiz quincy saw young michael being so professional, hardworking, talented he said michael be would very early to the set for hours of make-up and remembered every dialog of all artists . That made him want produce his album , same like berry gordy was impressed by an 8 year michael .michael jackson had undeniable talent he is destined to become the greatest. The thing quincy helped michael is getting any body to work michael like for suppose Eddie van for beat it , toto demo song for human nature etc because quincy is highly respected person in music industry and also michael jackson got his great engineer bruce sweden from quincy. But michael jackson talent is what made him successful he wrote and composed his songs by himself . The record of thriller cannot be broken by anyone even michael jackson himself also dangerous sold more than bad and history sold more than off the wall and what if false allegations didn't happen 😳 imagine how big michael jackson would be ,its actually insane how michael jackson succeded even many tried tarnish him.
There are multiple reasons why thriller sold the way it did
These are the reasons why I think thriller sold the way it did
1 the music that revolutionized the sound of pop music
2 the music videos were like short films with choreographed dance breaks that has been never before(billie jean , beat it heavy rotation on mtv)
3 the moonwalk - the sales increased rapidly when michael jackson did moonwalk on motown 25
4 thriller music video -just when sales are decreased a bit michael jackson decides to do thriller music video and sales went insane

The main reason is the prominence Michael held as a member of the Jackson 5. ALL of the adults in 1979, had been 8-13 yr olds when the J5 hit the market. Michael had favorable DEMOGRAPHICS, and had a killer sound since 1969.
When it was announced that he was doing a solo album, the world somewhat waited with baited breath. (It didn't hurt that he got OODLES of additional exposure with "The WIZ').

Quincy is just bitter and jealous of MJ’s success, creativity and eternal legacy. he can’t stand that MJ completely overshadowed him, it's so sad how disrespectful and rude he is. they wrongly accused him, humiliated him, crucified him but at the end he sold out O2 arena for 50 shows with demand for 200 more with no album in 8 years that’s fucking insane. he’s indeed unbreakable even after his death they tried to tarnish his legacy and failed. his timeless music will forever live on, nobody can touch him or break him

I’ve read all this craziness about Michael deserving all the credit. The dance moves are his and I’m sure he had a hand in writing and arranging but there were 31 musicians who had a credit on the Thriller album. There was also Quincy’s right hand man Rod Temperton who had a huge influence on Michaels 80s sound. Quincy was like the head coach, Temperton was a star coordinator and MJ was like the superstar QB. You needed all the elements to make the magic work. As for Quincy, he was a jazz bandleader and then he produced movie scores. He had limited commercial success for most of his career because he was more of a studio musician/producer but widely respected in the industry. He did the soundtrack for Roots, he produced the theme for Sanford and Son, he introduced the world to Bob James and later James Ingram; he and Temperton produced “ Give me the Night” for George Benson. He was a major star in the jazz genre but it was Quincy’s collaboration with Temperton that really put Q over the top in the late 70s and early 80s

It's clear that, despite the genius Quincy has sparkled in '80s, he increasingly had something wrong going on.
Michael was right, when wanted a change. And New Jack Swing, together with Hip Hop, was way more good to reinvent Michael Jackson's legend than Rap, as it happened actually.
As a human being, finally, Quincy has been really disappointing. He didn't understand a lot, really a lot of the true Michael Jackson. And I'm not telling I know Michael better than him, I'm telling that the Michael Jackson that comes out from dozens of other friends surrounding him during years is far different from the Michael Quincy depicted.
It's a shame that Quincy didn't defend Michael from the sexual allegations, this is a point that forever will be a stain on his soul.
And for the surgery as well, he could clearly blame him for the excess he thought Michael was pushing for some parts of his body, but his words show that he completely didn't understand what the diseases Michael was suffering from made him. I guess the two never was close friends, but close collaborators.
Quincy didn't know Michael that well, honestly, and getting older he became more and more weird in his speechs. The way he changed the name of his tour to put a distance from Michael is coward and mean, a move only small men could do. And Quincy proved he is a small man. A genius in music, but a dwarf as a human being.
In the end, while Michael was alive, he always had gentle and respectful words for Quincy, and always recognized his contribution. On the opposite, Quincy has often been rude, unfair and sometimes offensive and slimy against Michael, since they fell apart. Period.

Q had or has many decades and musical hindsight and depth in his corner that the end product has been part of the persona ! Record sales and music that still resonate today , from bedtime story featuring the great bass player Anothony Jackson to I'm gonna miss you in the morning, Featuring Luther Vandross and Patti Austin ! He's worked with the best in the game ! When you are the best, you work with the best! Many are forgetting or don't know, Jackson career was at a standstill when Q came along! And if Jackson was so talented, I'm more than sure he would have pulled himself out of the mud b 4 Quincy came along, but he had not a clue what to do! The producers Jackson worked with after Quincy had easy jobs , the train tracks had already been laid ! All they had to do is come up with a few hit songs and the public was going to pounce on it ! Not in numbers like Off The Wall or Thriller but enough numbers to be considered a success ! And keep the loyalist coming back for more, the loyalist were hoping and looking for material that was as good as thriller and off the wall or better , but that did not happen . Q had taken him as high as he could possibly go SPLICE.DISCLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20191002092920%26meid%3Db6ec545d89054515aa1ab9b3648835dd%26pid%3D101096%26rk%3D8%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D124683281287%26itm%3D334475832439%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2332490%26algv%3Ddefault&_trksid=p2332490.c101096.m3021&amdata=cksum%3A334475832439b6ec545d89054515aa1ab9b3648835dd%7Cenc%3AAQAHAAAA4OF5%252BpTTB9eWzF1iVTnQDCtcrEAWJQUl%252FnuJ%252FAFVzbZBm3EzZxVukOWIMSJNl78l1AHYeEpIMOHlyxi2vPH96fTAo3sy7XpjsiV7oZQ%252Bz4OsAQIKUys7i7uW3Cp2F2op4ItuG5UYzMRU4HvQqYsxYpwERhJlV2OL7GxZDn6lznkGl74tcjiErTVkpGy9nRoTRWmjzAMzexFH1G%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2332490 happened! One of the best pairings in the music industry for sure, but also two big egos colliding at some point down the road! It's clear to me that MJ's downfall started the second he hooked up with David Geffen and the objective all along was to somehow wrestle that catalog away from him. He should have stuck with J. Branca, F. Dileo and listened to Bert Fields, I doubt the accusations and trials would have taken place. It's sad that many people tried to control him and it was only normal for him to distance himself from them, but he needed those three on his side. MJ you will always be missed, there is simply no better entertainer than you. Peace!

I've listened to a Quincy Jones interview that he did sometime ago. And I do not think anything Q said about MJ was false. MJ was tight as a drum when conducting business. Prince complained about the record companies choke hold. But he conducted the same type of unfair business with his artist. Prince and MJ were very caring and generous. And both of them tight as tight gets when conducting any type of record business. The story about MJ not wanting to give Greg Philligans his fair share of points for his contribution to a song is true. Greg has played with the greats in the industry. Non of these people are saints. They are flawed, they can be petty, unforgiving, cheap, mean. And turn around and do kind thoughtful caring things for the less fortunate.

MJ's greatest album is Dangerous, it had everything from rock ballads to gospel, to hip hop, to New Jack Swing, to R&B to Pop, and resulted in some of his most iconic music videos like Black or White, Jam and Remember The Time. It was the first album I listened to from start to finish as a kid even do I didn't really know who the artist was except the legendary name and that my aunt was a huge fan. I found the album ready in the cd player at her house and it was a fun trip, replayed songs like Who Is It, Give Into Me, Will You Be There, etc several times before going to the next ones. I still haven't had this experience with any other album. Sorry, but Michael Jackson was the true magic behind Michael Jackson, everyone else just contributed to what was already there.

Your opinion is colored by having grown up with Dangerous being your first MJ album you listen to, so of course you'd think it was the best. However Thriller was superior to Dangerous. I was 7 when Thriller was big and 14 when Dangerous was released, so I was still young when both albums came out. Some of the songs on Dangerous sound dated. The New Jack Swing sound is no longer in style, so some songs sound stuck in the 90's. Though Thriller was released in '82, it transcends the era it was made, so it still sounds vibrant today. I hear more Thriller songs still on the radio today than I do songs from Dangerous.
That isn't to say that Dangerous wasn't a great album because it is. However while Dangerous is a great album, Thriller is timeless.

  • @zorglub667
    @zorglub667 Рік тому +1

that old debate about how much part either one of them had in the magic of these three albums is easily answered by the demos. michaels demos, produced on his own, often are nearly identical down to finishing touches and small details (i.e. that iconic string run or the mid8 funk guitar lick in "billy jean"). composition, vocal arrangement, dramatic curve, all fully present in the demo, not much left to "produce" about it. the final version of billy jean is literally the demo, just with the placeholder drum machine and synth bass replaced with the real thing.
so at least for those songs, its an objective fact that jones' contribution could at best have been more that of a sound engineer (after all, that drum sound is really awesome). and then you find out that that was largely bruce swediens input (further cemented by a lot of similar sounds and aesthetics in other swedien projects of that era), and it becomes clear, that at least for some songs, jones' contribution is nowhere near what one understands as the role of music producer these days, to put it mildly.
at least for some songs. like billy jean. make of that what you will.
on the other hand, given his exquisite credit list and excellent arrangement work over several decades, jones doesnt need extra credit where its not due. he absolutely deserves his prominent place in music history. just not for some songs like billy jean. that (and other titles where the demos are equally similar to the final product) is factually a song produced by michael jackson.

I don’t remember the exact reason, it might have been cause a harmony wasn’t right or the lyrics were wrong, but Michael did something I didn’t want, and I got pissed. And I mean pissed, man.
And in that moment I just got up and stormed over to Michael and just screamed at him - I don’t even remember what I said but I was just yelling at his face for not doing something right. After a second I snapped out of it and I looked over at Bruce, and noticed he was looking right at Michael. I looked back at Michael… and it was weird, man, cause he was staring right at me, but he wasn’t looking at me. Like he was seeing something else - his eyes were all fogged up. I stared at him for like 10 seconds, and I reached out and touched his shoulder to make sure he was okay, and he sort of snapped out of it and put his arms up, like I was gonna hit him.
And it was in that exact moment that I realized exactly what I did, and why he reacted like that, and I felt sick…
We took a little break after, since Michael was a little off for the next few hours. Everything was okay, Michael got over it though by morning… He’s so forgiving, you know? All I could think after that was 'Man, I hope this kid doesn’t see me like he sees his father.'

Quincy’s version is horrible enough. People don’t understand the impact of abuse on a kid. They don’t become fine when they turn 18. The fight or flight panic thing stays for many years. Most adults I know who were abused developed serious anxiety issues as adults because that early indoctrination made every imperfection or mistake a huge stress and messed them up. They usually need years of counseling or medication to overcome it. You can see how MJ was in interviews in those early years, kind of poker faced and nervous, took him years to get past that. The stare that QJ describes is exactly that physical reaction a kid that was abused has when screamed at, it all comes flooding in. No matter how useful QJ experience, that young man needed to not work with someone who couldn’t control his shit, even if he didn’t hit him. Though I don’t really trust QJ to tell the truth if he had. Wonder where the story came from?

It's like Fran Lebowitz says about books, it's hard enough to write one incredible timeless piece of genius, let alone expect authors to churn them out like no tomorrow. Off the Wall was where Michael really shone in my opinion. Thriller is the monumental work of genius, and the albums that followed were objectively solid, but were lacking in the feeling that people had become accustomed to getting from his music. I think he wanted to continually evolve, stay relevant and enduring, to truly solidify himself as the best. Constantly chasing the high of Thriller's success no doubt indicates he peaked earlier than he perhaps was ready for. He is probably one of the most famous people who have ever lived on Earth. No doubt that came with challenges he couldn't foresee when he manifested his dream to become the GOAT. But, while the earlier albums have mass appeal and felt better curated, his later work is still exceptional. You Rock my World was like a book end to Rock with You. Displaying his evolution from his first solo album to his final body of work. No one is in their seat when YRMW blasts at a function I can tell you that. It sounds like something that could be on the radio today getting play after play. People think more so about the loss of Michael as an artist and what else he might have given out to the world, but I think more about the colossal loss it is to the industry and aspiring artists who he would have mentored. His knowledge of production, film, rhythm, the creative process, all the wisdom he would have gained in hindsight about how to handle celebrity and the press...so many questions we'll never have answered.

OMG, you described exactly how I feel about what his future legacy would have been had he lived a couple more decades!!! The blueprint this man would be still creating blows my mind!!! 🤯🫣😮‍💨
