This seems a very efficient way of purling. I taught myself how to knit English and continental style by watching youtube videos. I will have to try this technique next.

This is genius. I'm a self taught Portuguese style knitter and tried to figure out intarsia earlier this year. I kept switching my yarn balls around and getting tangled up! I hated it so much, that I gave up. I'm going to pick it up again. I'm so excited to try this! Thank you!!!

I knit this way and I have seen videos of Greeks knitting this way. I really enjoy the technique and I have tensioned the yarn around the neck and also with knitting pins.

I like the way the tension is not on your hands

Do you have to start the project inside out? I've finished the ribbing on a hat with right side facing me. Is there a way to now transition to inside out fair isle Without knitting the wrong way?

If you’re not workig in the round, how do you knit like this on the knitside?
    I always struggle with that.

Andrea, I have your two classes on Craftsy, but they are not available right now. Am wondering how to do a two color ribbing....my swatches are not looking correct and cannot find where anyone has instructed on two color ribbing Portuguese style. Thanks for all your help!

Don’t know why this type of knitting is referred to as Peruvian. It’s from Portugal. However, Andrea Wong is from Peru. Maybe that’s where the misnomer originates.

If a South American country knitted in the Portuguese style that would be Brazil.
Why are the hearts upside-down in the chullo?

these are regular pins people and people in peru in the highlands don't knit like this CAUSE they don' have access to pins...i know , cause i lived there and my maids never knit like this. they knit english style others continental., depends on the way that you knit naturally. i can knit both hands, so could my maids

Ella Marie The pins are not what makes this Portugese knitting. She says the yarn can be put around the neck or one could also put it around a knitting pin. A pin is not neccesary for this style of kniting. What makes this style different from continental or english is the location of the working yarn and its tension along with the manner in which the stitches are made on the needles. Peruvians usually knit in the continental or english style but a great many indigenous citiizens of Peru that live in the Andes do knit in this style and are renown for their speed and precision.
