Knitting Help - Portuguese Knitting Style

  • Even if you're perfectly happy with the way you knit, I encourage you to give this video a looksie. Portuguese knitting is kind of mind-blowing, and the resulting stitches are identical to Continental/English/American knitting, which means you can work a row of Portuguese knitting or purling in your current project, if you like.
The needles I'm using for demonstration are Knitter's Pride Bamboo DPNs.
The pink yarn I'm using is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky, in color Crush.
The nail polish I'm wearing is by Julep, color "Janie":

My silver ring is actually a knitting needle gauge, and can be found here:

Staci - I am so glad you did this style of knitting - I knit Eastern European style and people tell me I knit wrong - you are showing people there is no "wrong" way to knit just different styles that end up with the same beautiful results and you can choose which is easiest for you

I knit English style too, and am faster than several of my continental knitting friends. I tend to use portuguese for my purl rows, because it gives my hands a rest - an important thing now that I'm getting older!!! LOL Knit the way you like, and don't listen to anyone else!

My father's family is from Portugal and originally I wanted to try this style of knitting as a way to reconnect with my heritage and learn something new. But OH MY GOD I think I just re-discovered knitting. This is SO much easier and less stressful on my hands and wrists. This is going to be my primary style of knitting moving forward! Thank you for the very clear and easy to follow tutorial. It's still incredibly helpful, nearly 6 years later.

I took what was advertised as a beginning Portuguese knitting class and left it confused and dejected. More than half the people in the class already knew Portuguese, so the instructor flew through this in a few minutes (standing at the front of the room), then dove into one-on-one fair isle and intarsia instruction, which took up the rest of the class time. Your video has been more far more instructive and helpful than that in-person class.
So, for anyone who has doubts, yes, you can learn from a video, especially when it has such a good instructor as Staci.

This method is amazing. You’re a wonderful teacher. I knew you would be wonderful when you put your glasses on 😂😂. I was like yeah this lady knows what she’s doing ❤️❤️❤️

Also, the purl stitch in this style is very good for people who have carpel tunnel syndrom, because it isn't so stressful for the hands.

My grandmother taught me to knit as a very young child. She was insistent that I hold my needles “correctly”from the start and instilled in me that it was sloppy to work in a way that does not allow you to control tension and speed. This made it more difficult in the beginning but was I suppose easier than adapting a poor style and then having to relearn
Although I know there is no correct way it pains me to see people knitting in an unergonomic way and 60 years later although I am constantly learning new sewing, crochet and knitting techniques I generally cannot bring myself to learn a new style of knitting. However 5his one I just might…..
By the way IMO you have the best knitting tutorials on you tube. Simple, engaging and you get to the point quickly and efficiently. I have learnt a lot from you. Thankyou

It took me a while to figure out the knit stitch but I got it! I knit English but this is much easier to switch to than continental. Purling is so fast too! The only thing I can’t do is hold the yarn tension in my right hand. I kind of do it with my left hand but hopefully with more practice it will become more natural. Thanks!

I learned to knit when I was about 8 years old, from a grand aunt that came to stay a few weeks with us, I believe she thought me only the purl stitch at that time and she would pass the yarn over her neck. After that years have passed when I got to knit again. And now I picked up the habit again (40 years later...). So purling was OK since I do it (as I just found out it was a style) Portuguese way, but knit was kind of tricky so watching many tutorials (mostly continental and English styles) I kind of adapted myself to passing the yarn over my neck as usual but then instead of leaving the yarn in the front I hold it with my left hand in the back of the work and knit as usual. Works like magic and it's really fast, almost as fast as purling. By the way I'm originally from Brazil which explains my aunt showing me the Portuguese style.

  • @c.l.8967
    @c.l.8967 5 років тому +11

Just a tip - instead of wrapping around your neck (and finding that your knitting keeps getting closer), use a portuguese yarn pin, thread the yarn through it - tension with your right middle finger (as you showed) and keep your yarn on a freely turning spindle. You'll find that your tension stays even, your knitting doesn't keep getting closer, and you don't have to adjust so often :) Love Portuguese style!

This method is so good, thank you! As a crocheter with a few years experience, I was trying to learn Continental but I just couldn't hold the yarn down to pull the loop through, it kept slipping. I tried English "throwing" and found it easy (I knit one scarf in this style as a child, so my hands remembered it a bit), but clunky with all that movement in the right hand and having to let go of the R needle. This is a perfect middle-ground for me, where I can do those small movements with my nimble thumb, and hold the yarn securely to pull loops through! Alternating knit and purl in this style is a breeze, too!

Also in summer I wear very light weight shirts and the pulling on the pin causes larger holes. My Dr who treated my for carpal tunnel researched the various knitting tec and he said this was the lest stress on the hands and wrists. Which is why I knit this way today

I'm a Continental knitter and find this method very hard. The knit stitch certainly takes much more motion than picking my yarn for the knit stitch. Most people I've talked to who have use it started out English style. So, Continental knitters, did you find this method difficult at first?

Oh my. My husband and I were on a trolley in New Orleans, there was an older lady next to me knitting very fast, but I couldn't grasp what she was doing. She was moving so quickly, and the fabric just seemed to flow out of hands, Now I know. The fabric she made in our 20 minute ride was what would take me much longer. Even my husband whispered in my ear, how does she knit so fast? This is what she was doing! But, she didn't have it wrapped around her neck, or maybe I missed that. Speedy indeed.

Another great video! You seem especially happy and you look great, btw. Love the longer hair too!
I love that you enjoy trying new knitting techniques and methods, and that you always share the good stuff with us. :)
After watching your "Flicking" video, I now knit kind of a combination English/Flicking style. (stitches held & worked close to the needle tips and sorta flick/throw the yarn from my right fingertip without letting go of the right needle) It has really increased my knitting speed!
And I'm one of the minority of knitters who has always enjoyed purling. It just feels like a more natural and smooth motion to me, and flicking made it even more so. But this Portuguese style looks like it has the potential to be even easier/faster!
Another vote for a Cottage Knitting video sometime. :)

Evidently, I hold the knitting needles with my thumb and pointer finger while Continental Knitting. The muscle between the thumb and the wrist starts hurting when I'm knitting a lot. Portuguese style knitting, since all we're doing with the thumb is flicking the yarn, relaxes the hand. Yippee! I also use a large x style paperclip to hold the yarn and attach it to the front of my blouse instead of wrapping the yarn around my neck. Same effect, just a different way to place the yarn in front.

There is easier way to knit in this style. You should put the working yarn behind and hold it with the index finger of your left hand. And the knitting is pretty much as when you knit in continental style with the yarn in the left hand, but easier (for me at least☺️).

I'm starting off with circular needles (I use the English method for the straight needles) and I couldn't find a position that worked for me for the circulars... then You tube proposed this video to me and... OH MY GOODNESS, it clicked... I need to work a little more but... it's so freaking easy and easy on the hands as well!

awesome demonstration!! Thanks for going slow so we could visually get a clear idea of this technique and thanks for going full speed to demonstrate the fact you can knit quickly with this method!!

That is so cool! It looks a bit rough on the carpal tunnels for those of us who already have the syndrome. I love the way you explain things. I learn something from every one of your videos that I watch. That yarn over the neck absolutely floats my boat.

My arthritic thumb thanks you for this video. This is such an easy style and you've shown it so I have been able to copy it. I'm converted from English to Portuguese knitting. Though can't say that I ever found an English purl difficult to do.
Great channel and I've subscribed. ❤

Gosh, I'm so glad I came across your channel today. I have hypermobility in my hands due to Ehlers-Danlos, and it made me give up knitting and crochet due to the sheer pain of it. In missing the craft, I have started looking into different ways people do fibercraft and needleworks, and your video here has given me hope. The moment you flicked the yarn with your thumb, I went "whaaaaaaat?" how cool!

And so, I got my needles and some chunky yarn and started giving this style a try. Two things I have to master.....1. my tension 2. how to keep my work from going up to my face. Any tip/s? Stay safe, stay healthy, stay fabulous ALWAYS!

Thank you for this great video! I only recently heard about Portuguese knitting and think I would like to try it. I love to do stranded knitting, and supposedly it's much easier to control your tension and keep the floats even when you knit this way. Lots of the Peruvian chulo hats are knitted in the round this way. Thanks for the demonstration.

I actually love purling lol. It's fun for me, I don't know why. I'm excited to learn something new, ( I can knit english, and continental, and I'm trying to learn lever/shetland as well), and I hope to pick this up as well!

I’m so confused, you said that the stitches end up exactly the same as other knitting styles, but I’ve heard that patterns have to be reversed. Although I cannot find any videos/articles to show how this is done. I would be extremely thankful if you could do a video about patterns and Portuguese style. Thank you for your videos so far.

Please help! I knit the Portuguese style and am having trouble converting instructions for the "wrap and twist" stitch from "regular knitting." Also, to make the edge look like a crochet chain, they tell you to slip as to knit the first stitch, I get a bulky loop when I do this. I just can't figure out how to "translate" it into PK. thank you!!

I am really trying to force myself to do all Portuguese knitting on a pair of socks. My purls are going great, and I finally have the knit stitch down and even did some rib work. However, I’m having trouble with my knit stitches being too tight. I’m wondering if I’m holding onto the working yarn too long. I feel like I need to hold onto it until I have my needle into the stitch before I pull it out. Any thoughts?

Thank you for showing this, it`s really interesting. But I cannot imagine this way of knitting may be as speedy as continental style. The thumb`s movement seems wide to me. In continental style the movements are so small, I can reach very high speed. Even with the purl stitch. But I find it very fsacinatingto see how many different knitting techniques exist.

I love portuguese style knitting. I switched to it a couple of years back because I've got arthritis in my hands and English style hurts too much. I'm only in my 30s and just wasn't content to give up knitting so I switched to portuguese. I think it seems harder than it is. I have found I like different needles with this style than English, I favour a super slippery metal sharp needle rather than the wooden needles I'd liked before. It's so fast and even looking too.

HI Staci, I love the Portuguese purling method, but I am having difficulty with the knitting method. I've watched several videos and I am having trouble seeing how to push the yarn through and I'm not sure how to position my working yarn. So, I'm knitting flat using circular needles. I'm holding the left needle in my left hand and the yarn is looped around my neck from L to R. The yarn leading to the ball is draped over my right middle finger. To start, I have the working yarn positioned between the needles and pulled to the front. Then I insert the R needle as if to knit, but I reposition it so that it is in front of the Left needle. Then I wrap the yarn around the R needle as I would if I were throwing the yarn. Next, I push the yarn down through the loop, pull it forward, and lift it off the needle. I know did something wrong because the R needle now contains a yarnover beneath the knitted stitch. Where did I go wrong?

I have seen and heard of this style and since I hsve issues with my wrists this qod well be worth learning. I read one comment where a lady using it with her continental method wonder how that's done. I continental knit but am pretty new as far as skills go. Really wished I'd learned this first before learning English and then Continental which I ended up liking best but still have issues with my wrists even with Continental. Thanks to an elderly friend who also has wrists issues and experienced trying out Portuguese knitting I have become interested in learning it now. O hope I can get the hang of it in my next practice swatches before doing my next projects. Thing is most tutorials of teach English or Continental in all projects. I get confused when watching them in a different method. Always have to review my basics when doing projects again anyway when going so long between my projects.

I use this method when doing long rows of purl. the knit stiches i still do in contiental. Because knitt stiches i do in the sleep. But my purls where always bit wobbely, with this the get better. I trid american/english stle, get them ore tense somewho but american knitting for me it slows me down and hurts. So for my long row with 300 purls i do portoguese.

That is a neat way of knitting, although I have never understood why purling gets such a bad rep, possibly because I used to always do English combination without knowing it since it felt more natural. I recently changed to continental eastern, again it felt more natural, but if I do an entire row of purl I switch back to my right hand but continue to clockwise wrap

I couldn't do it with the "yarn ring" on my middle finger, but it seems to tension my yarn ok without any special hold. When I tried the "yarn ring," the yarn seemed to be in the wrong position to do the stitches easily with my thumb. Anyway, I got the hang of it by doing my own thing. Video was a huge help!

I will give this a try. I am normally an English style knitter but having pain in my right thumb which Dr says is arthritis , not carpal tunnel. The Continental style has given me relief, but this looks even better. Anyone know where to get the tension pin???
