My Dad did the musical arrangement for this song and as a shy 7 year old, I sat quietly in our living room as both Don Estelle and Windsor Davis rehearsed the song with my Dad playing piano, will never forget the discussions on how to sing the song and Don’s incredible voice.
Windsor Davies’ comedy aside, Don Estelle’s voice is simply outstanding. Pitched exactly, passionate, confident and with a superb tonal quality. Just fantastic.
Back in 1974 we had 3 tv channels, no satellite TV not Videos and no Freeview but we had class acts like these and millions tuned in to watch them. We may have massive choice now but little quality, and performers like these are a thing of the past never to be repeated. RIP British TV

Reminds me so much of my granddad who was a WW2 veteran and died back in 1986. He used to love this show so much. I can still hear him laughing out loud, sat in his favourite armchair. Now Don Estelle and Windsor Davies have both passed on too- I feel a powerful wave of nostalgia for my happy childhood in the 70s/80s. Such a beautiful song.
wow, me too - my brother and I were raised by our grandparents.. grandad was in ww2, AND, died in 1986 also. Wonder if you're a sister I never knew about?
Late 1970s, early Saturday evening, sat by roaring coal fire, eating jam on toast, drinking tea. Laughing at It ain’t half hot mum with my grandma and grandad. Happy days in deed. RIP Mr Davies thanks for the lovely memories....

I'm Italian and I live in Italy but I was born and grew up in England. I have FOND memories of British TV commedies and this brought back a lot of wonderful memories. Don Estelle had a BEAUTIFUL voice. Greetings from Italy
I saw Don Estelle singing this in a shopping mall in Clydebank in 1990. He was singing live to to a backing tape. He sang it just like this maybe even better. I stood in awe for his whole set. I thought it was a shame that he had to do this to sell his Cds when he was one of our Great British icons.
My mum told me he was in our local shopping centre selling his CDs around that time. Annoys me greatly when I think back now, an absolute legend of the screen having to do that. Brilliant actor and singer, that had me in tears laughing.
Yes Don did it loads. Sad he had to do this when clearly he had so much talent. I have heard Windsor was a very nice man off camera. Would talk to anyone.
My dad who served as an 18 year old soldier toward the end of the war loved this show. All the characters were brilliant, and Windsor’s ‘Old Shutup” was the cherry on the cake. Comedy died when political correctness buried these wonderful shows.
@AMT The tide is turning on your wokeness....woke is over. Would you allow Richard Pryor to be a comedian today? The best ADULT comedy usually is observational taking aim at absurdity and hypocrisy... Hail the great Dave Allen...
@AMT and how long does the new 'comedy' last? I doubt they will be replaying many tv shows from today in 30 years. They are not funny and too many actually are insulting to anyone with a working brain.
Apologies to the late, great, Don Estelle. As a kid in the seventies I dismissed this as a crappy novelty record that didn't warrant being in the pop charts, despite loving "It ain't half hot mum". Over the last few weeks I've been watching re runs and was astounded with Don's singing in the show.
Sat here with tears streaming down my face. The memories of my late mam and dad loved this when I was a young lad. I can see and hear them both singing it. It's my memory and that's so special to me.
Steve Brown Hope your doing really well now I loved the 70s and you always think your parents will live forever I'm a dad to 6 my mum died 10yrs ago god I miss her every day stay strong my friend we will all meet Again God bless
My Dad loved this program......can still see him laughing.....I grew up in an era when if you didn't like something or were offended by it then fucking tough- get over it.....nowadays, folk are .......best not to say anymore......nuff said....
+David Simpson I remember my grandfather telling me about the Ink Spots original when I came home with this version. He was right about how great that is too.
I remember shivers running down my spine the first time I heard this: just after he said "Sing Lofty" and I had imagined something ridiculous happening, then this fabulous voice that stops you in your tracks because it is so beautiful. Happy times......
walking around Skipton one Sunday afternoon i heard the most beatiful singing voice i've ever heard coming from inside an arcade of shops/ turned out to be Don Estelle. RIP Don.
The lovely thing about this video is how Windsor Davies tried visually to claim the credit for the music in his faces and gestures, and it was purely comedic, nothing else. The humour between these two men was brilliant. Doh Estelle was of course a lovely singer. I love rock, punk, you name it, but I know good singing, and Don's voice is a dream.
I remember well my dear old Dad sitting in the front room enjoying this show every week, he had served out in Burma and India during WW2 and he could relate to those great characters, he rarely spoke of the war but I think this comedy helped him to think of anything funny and positive from those awful times.
there was discrimination back in the 70's yes but sometimes people get offended just for the sake of being offended. The series and a few others highlighted the problem rather than being the problem and be very funny with it too.
Its an attempt to please everyone. The attitudes of the 70s were normal back then, that's how it should be judged not from a modern sensibility. The past is another country etc.
I swear we had some of the programmes from 70's were the best ever, yes some were racist, sexist, etc, but the world was then, and is just as now however much they try to convince us otherwise.....
So true. As I said in an earlier comment, Don was born a little too late to be appreciated fully. Imagine how big a star he’d have been in the 30’s and 40’s?
I remember watching this as a wee lassie and loving it... Imagine me watching it as a 53 year old..I love it even more.. Windsor Davis is as camp as f*CK, it's hilarious, I love him..
I came back here to visit this great video again. I will just only say, I loved this show of what I could find of it! I loved British humor. We never got this show in America. I wish we had. I know these 2 fine men have passed on sadly.
Don Estelle's voice is very beautiful. Beautiful timbre...Windsor Davies is the perfect foil...he was very funny as the SM...two very talented men...I hope they lived happy lives for they certainly gave a lot of fun to Brits in the 1980s.
I remember sitting with my grandad on a Saturday night, watching this, Only fools and horses, Dad's Army and comedians like Tommy Cooper, Morecambe and Wise, over and over. And I'd swap all the modern day shit for just one more night to watch them all again with him.
If it wasn’t for Windsor Davies this would not be considered a comedy record. Windsor is only doing what he’s supposed to. But Don is showing his true class. A great voice.
We buried our brother last saturday he was 49...my brother sang ths song wen he was 12...n those days we watchd dads army...thank u to my cuz...who sang it at my bros tangi...funeral service....
He had a lovely natural tenor, being a small man who applied absolutely no forcing or constriction to his innately pleasing tone. Perfect vibrato and really musical phrasing. And a pure falsetto!
Don had an awesome voice. I watched this show as a kid and absolutely loved it. Windsor played his role perfectly. I am a gay man and I found no offence in shows like this. I used to absolutely kill myself laughing. Anyone who says they are offended has no sense of humour and is only claiming it for the attention. The PC Police have simply screwed us all out of a good laugh. No wonder we have so many people with depression nowadays, there is nothing to have a good laugh at on TV.
Listening to this in 2020 and amazed by the wonderfully clear, beautiful voice that Don Estelle had. What a great song. RIP Don and Windsor - very talented men, sadly missed.
When I first heard this long ago, I was blown away to find out that Don Estelle had such a beautiful voice. I'd listen to songs like this as well as Bowie, Pink Floyd and Led Zep.
Windsor Davies RIP A great comedy sergeant major character in yet another 1970s classic comedy series..Thanks for the memories and god bless you Windsor.
How Don Estelle stopped himself from laughing with Windsor Davies doing his thing just behind him I don't know, what a pair of great actors and what a great singer with such a wonderful voice Don was, you are both missed so much RIP both of you, thank you for many years of top class entertainment.
I'm American but saw this show on UA-cam. FANTASTIC comedy really great stuff. I think the fact that Davies was really in the military made it more cool :) and yes I don't care what anyone says about this show, its fantastic comedy. I say I am American, to just say I am NOT British. But I DO ENJOY these British type of shows. I saw this the first time ever here on UA-cam. and I saw Benny Hill on tv here and on UA-cam. I like British shows. of all types. This is also a great performance here .
Totally agree. I'm a gay man and I loved it. I was never offended by his loud "Fairy" name calling. Windsor was brilliant. If anyone says they're offended by this type of comedy then they're just doing it for the attention.
Dons voice is flawless, his was the first voice I really appreciated at a young age i think i was 12 years old when I first viewed this on top of the pops and still love it !!!
Last year I bought the It Ain't Half Hot Mum entire series on DVD. Brought back many wonderful memories and lots and lots of laughter. We would have seen these guys and the rest of 'the gang' many more times on our TV screens over the last few years if it wasn't for the damn PC Brigade! Truly excellent stuff. RIP Don Estelle, one of the world's wonderful voices. Think I'll go and watch my IAHHM DVDs again :) SHHAAAAAT AAAAAPPP!!!!
Historically correct if not politically. I loved this show. Especially when the boys were in drag. Stuart McGugan did a brilliant Rita Hayworth considering he was all muscles. 🤩😂
The pc brigade have become much much worse since your original comment 8 years ago. Gods knows what it’s going to be like in another 8 years. We will probably be arrested for comments we made on UA-cam years before!
Don was a wonderful singer the only thing missing was looks , if he'd been 6ft and handsome with that voice can you imagine what might have been....RIP Don and Windsor
Don Estelle’s voice is so pure and his expression is one of such joy, that only now, looking back, does one realise that he and Windsor Davies really did create a beautiful moment in time.
Cameron Richards Hi Cameron It's a great series and a very good purchase Watch it and celebrate the great work by those who created and starred in it Take care

Two great, truly great performers, now sidelined by the current PC trend. F**k Off PC, please just enjoy this for what it was and is - a great performance from two consummate, and genuine professionals..
I am 52 now and I remember watching this show back in the late 70s or early 80s as a kid. Myself , mum , dad and my sister could not believe that beautiful voice coming out of lofty, great to watch it again after all these years , thanks for posting.
Such a sad end for Don Estelle trying to sell his music in a shopping centre and with a voice like that. It is true that there is no justice in this world.
I heard that he ended up as a chimney sweep cleaning houses of the Aristocracy....They are said to have paid him extra to sing Whispering Grass while half way up a chimney.According to the Duke of Bedford the sound emanating from the chimney was "ethereal in nature"......A sad ending for this charismatic actor.
I watched Don singing in the Middleton shopping center while he was selling his cd's, and thinking if he was born in an earlier time what a huge star he would have been, he truly did have a beautiful voice, but I suppose life's like that eh, it has to be right time, right place
My aunty used to sing this song to me when I was young, sadly she passed away, two years ago, everytime I hear this song I think of my aunt I cry every time, such a beautiful song though

If anyone says they're offended by this type of comedy then they're just doing it for the attention.
you are american and?

PC?! “Oh dear, how sad, never mind!”
Dons voice is flawless, his was the first voice I really appreciated at a young age i think i was 12 years old when I first viewed this on top of the pops and still love it !!!
Windsor Davis will always be Battery Sargent-Major Brynn Williams to me, he played that part beautifully.
frogstamper Shutttt up!!!!
frogstamper .typical, decent, talented . he ŕeminds me of the r.s.m we had at school, from the argylls and hard as nails!out of uniform a gent.r.i.p.
frogstamper I think he was born to play that part. Perfection.
SSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTT UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP !!!
frogstamper
Best sergeant major ever
And a great comedy actor
Last year I bought the It Ain't Half Hot Mum entire series on DVD. Brought back many wonderful memories and lots and lots of laughter. We would have seen these guys and the rest of 'the gang' many more times on our TV screens over the last few years if it wasn't for the damn PC Brigade! Truly excellent stuff.
RIP Don Estelle, one of the world's wonderful voices.
Think I'll go and watch my IAHHM DVDs again :)
SHHAAAAAT AAAAAPPP!!!!
I discovered Don Estelle about 6 months ago. I love his voice . Wish I had known him way back when. I'm well and truly hooked. He was fabulous.
Don was a wonderful singer the only thing missing was looks , if he'd been 6ft and handsome with that voice can you imagine what might have been....RIP Don and Windsor
Totally agree - often average/poor talent but "good looks" gets ahead of super talent but supposedly poor look....
Aww he's cute !!!
He didnt have a good mansger who could promote him well. But lucky he was in this comedy. We could enjoy his voice.
God bless them both.
He has a lovely kind face and a beautiful voice which together make him appealing '
Don Estelle’s voice is so pure and his expression is one of such joy, that only now, looking back, does one realise that he and Windsor Davies really did create a beautiful moment in time.
And how I am 88 this was the first recording i danced to with my big broter james Crichton deceased asof yesterday
RIP Windsor Davies - Legend
Great welsh voice. RIP can't watch It Ain't Half Hot Mum now. Too sad to watch as he is no longer with us.
Cameron Richards
Agreed - absolute legend
Such a great man
@@paulelliott3220 I am 14 years old and love It Ain't Half Hot Mum. Got it on DVD 3 years ago.
Cameron Richards
Hi Cameron
It's a great series and a very good purchase
Watch it and celebrate the great work by those who created and starred in it
Take care
@@paulelliott3220 Windsor grew up in Wales and I am actually from Wales myself. He grew up in Bridgend which is round the corner from me. Funniest thing when he lets Parkins off with everything. Did they find out to see if Parkins was Sergeant major's son?
You can see the friendship in their eyes. Simply awesome stuff!
Absolutely fantastic, takes me back to my youth. What a brilliant rendition of an old classic... 👌
Sadly we have lost both these legends of Yester year. Rest in peace Windsor & Don. You'll never be forgotten, as comedy today doesn't even come close to your standard or class.
Respect Sirs. God bless you both.
Can't believe what i just read below about Don Estelle, he was such a lovely little man with a fantastic voice, no one should end their lives like that xxxx he was wonderful.
My Father served in India 1946 and always loved this show always telling stories of punkawallas and Sgt Majors who had too much sun
My grandad did as well Phil and spoke warmly of his time there
Best 3 minutes of my day today.
Seen my mum tear up as this was dad's favourites .. love you dad xx
"I will not have gossip in this jungle..!" - Brilliant.!!!
RIP Windsor Davies and Don Estelle who died a few years before. The world is a sadder place without them
thanks to youtube for this wonderful video of a great singer and a wonderful song. i had never heard of don estelle until i accidentally ran across this video on youtube.
One of the most underrated songs of all time ⛅️ God bless you both for this performance 💕
Don Estelle should have got into doing musicals, brilliant singer..
Sadly Don Estelle also past away back in 2003 and so has Windsor Davis recently. These comedy geniuses will be sadly missed. RIP Don and Windsor.
My mu n dad went to see him( little Don) in Worksop around 94, he was excellent.
He would of made a great Nicely Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls. He has the solo Sit Down, Your Rocking the Boat.
@@lister-of-smeg4056 I expected nothing less.
I meet Don in the 1980s singing in the old swan shopping center Birmingham, it was so sad to see him fall so low, I had a long chat with him and purchase a cassette tape off him and he signed the inlay card for me I still play it lovley man lovley voice r I p
I heard he ended up working on a roundabout, trying to open a petting zoo, in some small village somewhere. Tragic.
are you a fucking moron or was that a stupid joke,, he made brief appearances in two episodes as Little Don, the keeper of the Roundabout Zoo,,
I heard that he ended up as a chimney sweep cleaning houses of the Aristocracy....They are said to have paid him extra to sing Whispering Grass while half way up a chimney.According to the Duke of Bedford the sound emanating from the chimney was "ethereal in nature"......A sad ending for this charismatic actor.
really? so sad...whats went wrong?
I came across Don Estelle in the mid 90s in Banbury shopping Mall selling his CDs and had that exact thought !!
You told the blabbering trees _ I will not have gossip in this jungle. BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!
I think this is a cover of an old Inkspots song
+colinp2238 Yes!
Absolutely fantastic. Love it.
2 proper legends . Our time's gone but we've the memories . All take care , care for each other 💖
Never forget seeing them perform this in the doorway of Woolworths at Scarborough one summer in the early 80's.
Today’s sad news of his passing brought me here. RIP Windsor
me too. :-(
Oh dear, how sad...
Ditto, another great gone, but not forgotten.

This is just a knockout
I remember watching this when I was 10,with my Mum and brothers, when it was on the telly in the 70s..lovely memories
What a big big voice from the little man ....lovely tone and resonance . wonderful ! !
Got a feeling they're performing this song somewhere today. Rest easy Windsor Davies.
I like to think that, my dad loved this
Pure class. I really enjoyed that and Don Estelle has a beautiful voice.
I watched Don singing in the Middleton shopping center while he was selling his cd's, and thinking if he was born in an earlier time what a huge star he would have been, he truly did have a beautiful voice, but I suppose life's like that eh, it has to be right time, right place
My grandad loved this song.. Brings back fond memories...
R. I. P Windsor Davies. You made us laugh.
RIP Windsor and Don, glad to have been a kid when they we're on TV along with Melvyn Hayes etc...
My aunty used to sing this song to me when I was young, sadly she passed away, two years ago, everytime I hear this song I think of my aunt I cry every time, such a beautiful song though
Wow I always remember this tune and remember singing it as a child and I knew every word of it" amazing back then as it is now, I'm 53 and wow.
Makes me cry every time i hear this, brings back all my memories from the 70's, i miss everyone ive lost .
