Yes! Finally someone talking about HOW to water calatheas!! One thing I always heard about calathea care when I was starting out were "high humidity" and "keep them moist", but never how to strike that fine balance. It took me a solid year to figure out I was overwatering mine and that's why they were struggling. I didn't think I could overwater calatheas LOL I held back watering and it got so much better. I'd say the right watering (w/ filtered or rain water if possible!) was more critical than giving them higher humidity.
Awww I hope someday I get the chance to try tap water. My home here using water from the ground so its not been treated. But I can imagine how minerals can cause them to be unhappy.
I brought home a couple of new calathea over the weekend and am re-watching this video for any tips I might have forgotten about. I have several Calathea, Stromanthe and Maranta already in my collection but it's always nice to be reminded about what's working and what's not. I find that they really do thrive in very low light, which is why I love them so much. Some of the true very low light loving house plants, for sure!
Hi Sean, months ago after watching your video about Jungle Floor Mix I spent a big time to get all the ingredients, some are not easy to find in US. Now I can report to you that my calatheas, jewel orchids and begonias are doing great. But the most amazing success I achieved with episcias. Million thanks to you. Buy the way, you look great in this shirt.
Felt so guilty of killing calatheas in Malaysia where we get tropical weather, but yes I’ve experienced the joy of seeing them come back from the dead too. Thank you Sean for explaining soil condition with the cotton pad, so helpful! 💗 Gonna pray that I won’t kill anymore after this video.
I almost killed my orbifolia 3 months ago when I found your video about your potting mix and purchased them without second thoughts. After being dormant for about 2 months, they started to pull some new leaves again! Thank you for saving my plants! ❤️❤️❤️

My stromanthe triostar is super diva, still struggling after 3 years, hope you have a separate video for this because yours is gorgeous, anyway thank you for this care video. Greetings from the Philippines 🇵🇭.
I've watched several videos of the same theme.... This is the first one I actually found both interesting and useful! My Calatheas are already grateful for it. Thank you!
I'm in love with this type of foliage. I bought a rufibarba after much reading up but nothing near to what you shared here, thanks for this wealth of information. Inspired to find more of these.
This is very helpful video. I have a calathea which I keep indoors in law/medium light. One day I sprayed her leaves, put it outdoors in bright indirect light, in order the air to dry out her leaves. But she didn't like that and she was angry, lol. She lowered her leaves more than usual and became tough, I was scared and afraid of loosing it. Then I put it back to her place hoping everything would be ok. Fortunately she came to normal the other day. Now I know why, thank you for sharing.
I have been collecting all of these tips from all your other videos when you mention small tips for calatheas, and I have seen a lot of improvement on my calatheas and marantas! Specially the airy potting mix and the small terracota pots has been a huge difference for them. Thank you for sharing all these tips because the other videos on youtube from other people say completely different things that kill calatheas in a week (specially in tropical countries like ours).
Also they are very rewarding because they put out new leaves constantly! They never stop growing :) And I was surprised that the Calathea Rufibarba is hard for you, because for me is one of the easiest along with the Makoyana! hehe
Thank you for the very helpful information , i have killed a fewer of my calathea and hopefully after watch your video i prayed this time it will survive.
Calathea rufibarba, quite surprisingly, is my pick for the easiest to grow. Low light, fluffy moist soil mix, and not near any drafts works for me. And I agree with you on staying away from misting and stuffy humid environments! Thank you so much for sharing your potting mixes - they have made a major difference in my plant care.
Great tips for growing calatheas Sean😌🙌👏🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟I enjoyed it😌🙏💞I have a calathea makoyana and its' doing well. I might send you some pictures😉Have a great day🌞
Happy to have found a prayer plant care video by someone also from southeast asia! I was having really good luck with my "resurrected 😅" prayer plants since last year, but these past few months, they've all just been drying up significantly! They have less than half their leaves left. I'm thinking it might be the intense heat we're experiencing now, so I moved them so stay underneath some trees. So frustrating though ☹ no new growths yet either. Looking forward to your specific prayer plant videos!😊
The first plant I ever bought was a calathea warscewiczii then read it was one of the most difficult of all! 😱 I must have had beginners luck as it’s still growing strong 2 years later. My conditions here in Scotland are well suited though x
So glad you posted this, Sean. It made me move my calathea ornata closer to the humidifier (I'm not in the tropics!) and away from direct light. It's leaves have been curling and crisping like crazy and I wasn't sure how to help it. Now you've made me want more calatheas. I only have 3 and 1 maranta.
OH You just made me soo happy!! I will watch this several times. I love calatheas. I thought you would have had White Fusion in the difficult section. Thanks for this video.
I don't have many calatheas, because they are such spider mite magnets! The following mix, is what I use for all of my indoor plants.......it needs to be light since I live in California. 20% soil 20% coco coir 20% perlite 20% orchid bark 20% clay pebbles Have a blessed week. 🍃 🌼
I really needed this!! I have many calathea, and a few that have succumbed to spider mites so I’ve switched to straight sphagnum moss for rehab. My orbifilia is so crispy 😫
Thank you very much for your teaching Sean, brilliant on so many levels! I am gleefully gobsmacked with your detailed levels of thought; attention to every detail and all botanical aspects covered in all of your videos. We are the richer gardeners for all your dedication and education. In this video, the cotton moisture pads demonstration described categorically what these species need to thrive in terms of moisture. I enjoyed the part “guess which was grown inside?which outside bit”? the answer illuminating. I love the vibe if you are not artfully playing and experimenting with your plants, you are doing it wrong. Also your Ikat vibe shirt was a nice surprise detail against your white walls. All but one (except Ornata, a long time ago. I wish I kept the stump as they come back from the dead!) of my plants in this species are thriving in my garden, in a shady spots concealing my worm farms from the sunlight. I give them a handful of worm castings sprinkled over the top (closed loop fertilising here). I plant them in any areas that are less windy to keep the humidity up. I plant along with a homemade forest floor type mix with extra coconut fire and worm castings. As there are gale force winds pretty much everywhere here, a clift top spot. My next experiment is seeing whether my zebrina can grow in a super windy spot by my front gate, where I need rocks and ties, to hold the plants from being blown out of the soil, ugh. I am jealous of your high walls keeping out the wind, and your secret garden beyond.
Wow thank you for this video! Finally, a video where someone explains everything about calatheas. One of my first plants when getting my own place was a white fusion. After finding out it was a drama queen, I began to see it start dying in my care 🥲 It eventually died off and then began to regrow and is now looking nice but has lost its variegation. Still love calatheas though and will continue to learn and get more 😊❤️
@@onlyplants Just checked out the video, and wow! Totally different from what people at plant stores have been telling me (“Just give it more light and time”). Guess I’ll have to wait until the plant is a little more mature and bigger before I start propagating it then :) Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm from Singapore and never really got it when all the problems I had with Calathea kept getting rerouted back to issues related to lack of humidity, whenever I read up or looked up UA-cam videos. Your tips on potting media make so much sense and I can't wait to try them out. Also gonna get me some new terracotta pots huhu. I'm so happy I found your channel :)
I bought this plant from Costco for $23 and it's four feet tall and beautiful but i didn't know the name or any info till i saw your video so thank you very much
I love calatheas and I really had to get to know and understand them and their needs, once I got the hang of it, ( after killing a few, and some resurrections) now these fussy divas live well with me, thank God, finally !!😁😁
Thank you so, so much! Have been trying to 'get' Calatheas for quite a while now. The more Ctenanthe types do well with me, the Orbifolia, alas, not at all. The Mosaica and related ones love me! The Rufibarba is a deep love for me, but, yes, verrrry difficult. There is a huge one in the office, thriving on hydroculture. I found one in a coco pot instead of plastic and it is doing well. So I would definitely go for terracotta or any other airy pot + more airy mix + frequent watering. I live in Europe, so temperate climate with average humidity.
Somehow I see a lot of Europeans grow calatheas more successfully than here i. Tropical asia 😅 I believe its your determination and longer experience with this plant family.
@@onlyplants thank you! But you are being far too modest, Sean. Your plants are stunning and your video was very instructional. Once again I learned a lot. It is so nice you explain your thinking proces to us!
Very timely video, Sean. My stromanthe triostar leaves got burned due to extreme heat here in the Philippines. Thanks for giving me hope that it will revive. BTW the werewolves bit was hilarious.
This video is really helpful. I saw a lot of sites that recommend to mist the plant often to increase the humidity but i didn't know that it will creates a place for fungus and bacteria. I feel so bad treating my calatheas the wrong way. Thank you Sean. My calatheas will be treated they way they should from now on.
Speaking of bacteria, I collect rainwater off the roof and am starting 2 see brown spots on my picturata lately. I use worm juice with it. I live in Florida. I have about 50 or so. Is your fucata u showed very difficult? Lisa
Thank you for sharing us tips on how to take care of calatheas. I think this is even more better with the other tips I've been hearing. Certainly I will follow this tips.
from europe: I do mix my aroid subrate with a little bit more organic soil and they like it. I actually let mine dry out almost completely between waterings, maybe around 80 % dry and they never gave me a bad or crispy leaf. I am to afraid to overwater them otherwise and I do water strongly and soak the soil. They are also in terra cotta
@@joankennes3230 aroid mix: BioBizz light potting mix, bark, perlite and activated charcoal :) plus a little bit wormcasting or organic soil for the calatheas.
I live in the Caribbean and my Zebrinas are the easiest Calatheas. They thrive under my care. Thanks for the tips Sean, maybe I'll find some burnt rice hulls.. I killed my Orbifolia but I will try again.
Very informative, thanks...out of all the calathea vlogs that I've watched...you're the only one that didn't suggest filtered water 🤣🚿 tbh I've always used tap and so far they're all healthy and lush no browning except for the naturally spent leaves...as usual enjoyed your classroom sessions...watching and listening.😀
Hi! New to your channel. Thank you so much for all the information regarding calatheas. I have 5 of them and they are ok. I am going to follow your recommendations and I am going to re-pot them in better soil and also terracotta pots. I also have a stromanthe trio star and that one is happy and blooming! Thanks again! Happy planting!
I would start with one first and try to figure out the care in your environment before getting more. The biggest culprit is usually watering… followed by spidermites… followed by compacted/water logged potting mix.
Hallo 😊my mosaika Network have a white flower and lives in a 45Inch Pott and i spray every day with handwarm water🌱and she loves it 👋wishes from germany
So beautiful. Even living in Malaysia with high humidity I have killed all except for 1 Orbifolia . So tempted to get more especially White fusion . Tried it 3 times but sadly none survived. Spidermites and over watering killed them. Will stay away for time being till I'm confident. Great video with many useful tips. Thank you.
Thank you for your tips on taking care of indoor plants. Your instructions are so clear. Recently I bought a few Calathea plants. I am deciding whether to use self watering pots which come with a wick socking up water from the bottom of the pot or normal terracotta pots. You mentioned most of these plants required the the soil to dry up before each watering. So are these self-watering pots suitable for Calathea, Monstera, Philodendron and the rest of the indoor plants?
I would never use self watering pots on any species haha. Maybe except with ferns or aquatic plants. I enjoy watering plants far too much to use self-watering. Also all plants need drying out period to some degree 😀
At last, a tropical care tip for Calatheas! This may be the first I've seen on UA-cam. I appreciate your efforts in researching for this, Sean. I also like that you include indoor care tips. I have a Lancifolia for about a month, growing indoors (Singapore), and have stopped misting it after your tip in one of your earlier videos. My Calatheas thank you for that :) I also realised from your videos that it may not be in the right soil mix. It takes a week for the soil to dry out between waterings, and is also in a nauseating bright pink plastic pot. When I use chopsticks to poke at the soil, it seems loose enough. Should I repot to give it a better soil mix and terracotta pot? It seems to be doing okay so far, just worried that it may suddenly die on me due to root rot. But if I do repot, I'm afraid I may risk killing it. I'm a fairly new plant parent.
I think loosening the soil should help a lot. Or transfer it to terracotta for more airflow to the roots. They dont do well with sudden repotting of media so I would not change the media yet 😀
I have a rattlesnake plant. I loved how it looked and didn't read how to tale care of it until after I had it. I ended up cutting it completely down except for a couple and it is now growing back, like 4 right now. I have it in a darker area and doing better. We shall see. 🙂
Thank you so much for this and all your videos! So very helpful. If most calathea prefer low to medium light, when using a 2 wand, clamp grow light how far away from the light should they be?
Whoaaa Im not familiar with that… but try to keep it further away than your aroids. Also make sure you have a fan going somewhere they thrive in airflow
I suppose easy or hard depends on a lot of factors: media, lighting, watering, and stuff. My ornata is on its dying breath. Tried repotting into a different mix (from compost mix to burnt hull) and no effect. I'm just like in "when you die, you die" mood for it. Silver plate is on and off for me. Contrary to your issue the rufibarba at home was originally under the shade of a type of dracaena out in the open and I repotted it. It's doing very well with healthy rhyzomes and all. Best performing is my setosa. I hardly had to do anything. I just water it every 3 days. It's bushy and tall. Levonero is quite good but had a mysterious near death experience a few months ago. Other calatheas I have are so-so. Some are good but usually have minor case of crisping tips. All in all I was very enthusiastic about calatheas when I started my plant craze but not so much now. Still adore them but discovered aglaonemas are less demanding and of course loving crotons more than others.
Keep it up Sean! People in Malaysia and Singapore want to know more tropical care! Thank you!
yes! keep it up! people from France want to know more too! I really love your videos

Seems sound... What is your aroid mix?
@@joankennes3230 aroid mix: BioBizz light potting mix, bark, perlite and activated charcoal :) plus a little bit wormcasting or organic soil for the calatheas.
@@curryisgood6103 thank you so much!
This has helped me to understand my calatheas better. Thanks for your advice for I was on the verge of throwing them out.Great job.
😀😀 calatheas are known to come back from the dead
Never bought calathea until I saw this video. Thanks Sean!
Hope you can try your hand at some, start with easier ones 😀
So soo helpful! Thanks again Sean 😭 I'm so ready for my calathea. It's coming next week. Wish me luck :))
Good luckkkk.
Thank you for your very informative video Sean Bro..
Thanks, Sean for this. I really really really need this… ♥️♥️♥️
I live in the Caribbean and my Zebrinas are the easiest Calatheas.
Im sure minerals cause bit of damage in plants, but mainly its the moisture/humidity control with calatheas that can ensure their survival 😀
Thanks a lot.. It's very helpful.. Now i know what i was doing wrong.. They are absolutely beautiful.. 😍
Now Im on my way downstairs to check on my calatheas.. soil and stuff.. thanks a lot
Do poke the soil gently to aerate the soil too. I find that they love that
Thank youu good luck on them Calatheas
Very informative. Thanks
Me and my Siz still collecting this beautiful plants,,now we have more than 47 varieties of Calathea plants...And Begonias too...
😀😀
Yesss
Well explained ...thank you Shawn .
Yaye 😀
You’re right on time!!!! I’m going crazy 😩❤️❤️
Very good, i love calatheas! 💚🍂
Hi Sean, it's off topic but always intrigued with the painting behind, may u share the artwork info :)
Ooo I got it off the streets in Bali. Its not signed or anything 😅
This is very helpful video
I have several calathea and I have had problems with Ornata and Medallion. They died after having them a month.
I would start with one first and try to figure out the care in your environment before getting more. The biggest culprit is usually watering… followed by spidermites… followed by compacted/water logged potting mix.
Just wow you really have many beautiful plantss soon I can have plants that as many as that HAHAHAHA
Hallo 😊my mosaika Network have a white flower and lives in a 45Inch Pott and i spray every day with handwarm water🌱and she loves it 👋wishes from germany
Amazing video again man!! Keep up
I just watched the video on Calatheas. I'm so sorry for not seeing it sooner! I could have saved some of them with your Tips😪
Keep trying 😀
So beautiful. Even living in Malaysia with high humidity I have killed all except for 1 Orbifolia . So tempted to get more especially White fusion . Tried it 3 times but sadly none survived. Spidermites and over watering killed them. Will stay away for time being till I'm confident. Great video with many useful tips. Thank you.
Yeah building up experience and confidence first will certainly make calathea care a walk in the park 😀
i couldn't stop looking at your stromanthe it's so perfect! and my dad just got me a zebrina. hope I wont kill it.
Good luck with the Zebrina. It is so beautiful in person
Love all your videos! ❤️
Wow!!! just 6 days you reached 50k , you gained another 6.5k subscribers!!! Congratulations!!!
Haha thank youu
Hi Sean , I have the crocodile calathea it’s thriving thanks for this video great info I love them all 🥰🧤👒🐨🦘🇦🇺🙌🧚🌱
Yayee
My Calatheas thank you for that :)
I also realised from your videos that it may not be in the right soil mix.
@@onlyplants Thanks for replying!
A viewer from the Philippines, aaaackh still going gaga over these!! 💚💚💚
Calathea’s are divas for sure but gosh they are gorgeous!
I have a rattlesnake plant. I loved how it looked and didn't read how to tale care of it until after I had it. I ended up cutting it completely down except for a couple and it is now growing back, like 4 right now. I have it in a darker area and doing better. We shall see. 🙂
Ooo they are not the easiest in my experience.
Wow..first seeing you wear so smart..So nice yr calathea😍😍😍🥰
😅😅
all the plants look fab as usual, but I need that t-shirt man. It looks sick
Ita a traditional Indonesian weave
Thank you so much for this and all your videos! So very helpful. If most calathea prefer low to medium light, when using a 2 wand, clamp grow light how far away from the light should they be?
Whoaaa Im not familiar with that… but try to keep it further away than your aroids. Also make sure you have a fan going somewhere they thrive in airflow
I’m jealous of your collection! #goals
Wow all your calatheas look picture perfect! Thank you for the tips, I hope mine can recover after this :(
I have watched this video so many times! My favorite 😍 would you be able to make on on the varigation for the stromanthe, calathea's?
Thank you. Unfortunately I dont understand the question 😅
Whoaaa we have the opposite struggle with them hha. My setosa and rufibarba are always standing right in front of the gates of hell.
@@onlyplants do you think calatheas have star sign compatibility?
Calatheas for every sign:
Taurus: setosa, rufibarba
Omg your calatheas are super beautiful!!!!
Thank you ❤️
“I’m gonna hunt you down and smack you” -> Hit like 👍🏻 immediately!! 🤣 they look soooo good
