    I've been hoya obsessed since sitting at my grandmas table, nibbling toast, while staring at her hanging carnosa in a ceramic parrot planter as a child. We had a cutting in our west facing window growing up and it would fill our cedar home with the most exquisite fragrance on summer nights. That cutting is 47 years old now and I have my own cutting and several other cultivars. They are truly special.

    • @onlyplants

      Whoaaaa 47 years old! Sometimes reminds us that plants have been around far longer than we have... and will probably go on and on...

    I've got a little tip for how to speed up propagation. I saw for the first one, the Hoya retusa, you cut each cutting individually, put your shears down, pinched the leaves and stuck it in the soil. This takes a lot of time. The way we used to do it when I worked as a gardener is that we'd cut the whole vine and then just stick the lowest stem, where we just cut, in the soil and then cut above the node. Stick the next stem right beside the first one, cut above, repeat. This works well for any vining plants with fairly sturdy, not too long internodes (the stem between nodes). It's also easier for plants with smaller leaves, because if the leaves are big you have to do some manual tucking and turning to fit multiple cuttings. Don't know if you apply this method later in the video, haven't watched far into it yet.
    Btw, you can stop the white sap by putting the cut areas in warm water for just a little bit, no more than a few minutes. This works with ficuses too, and really any plant that produces the milky sap. Though this is probably more useful to any viewers reading this than it is to you, as you said it doesn't bother you ;)

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  4 роки тому +17

      Whoaaaa cool tip. It will definitely cut down propagation time and also not confuse you as to which side up the cutting is

    I saw your video yesterday. I kept waking up all night thinking about giving my Hoyas a haircut. Today I did. Some of them never had a haircut in 13 years so they are large and some are 20+ from a friend. Some are only about 5-6. And I was greedy!!! Omg I have soooo many cuttings!! And the plants look great with their haircuts. Thank you for reaching me that it’s ok to trim them like this. Very inspiring. I will have plants soon for plant swaps.

    I thank you for showing all the different methods ... I am growing in a fairly cool climate in Melbourne Australia .. I find that the carnosas and Bella love the cooler conditions . ... Now that I have watched this I will be butterflying and looking for aerial roots and trying all propagation methods .. It is winter here and my hoyas grow mostly outside undercover and get plenty of filtered light.. Also have some growing inside where they hang in the window which gets all the morning sun... I keep some semi tropicals inside ... Bella is an awesome hoya and flowers well inside for me in my Bathroom .. cheers from Aus

    Watching this again (autoplay, lol), and I am reminded of how greedy I usually am when propagating as well. LOL
    I got freebies from my neighbor today- their jade pothos is overtaking their front yard, lol- and I saw myself in that bit when you were looking at the cutting intently and figuring out what you were gonna do with it, then decided you're going to be greedy about it. So me! LOL

    Making like u-shaped pins out of wire ( shaped like a rounded staple) might be a good way to keep the butterfly cuttings against the rooting substrate. I plan to try it today! My very first Hoyas are coming in the mail today! ( yes I am geeking out) I plan to root the slips in pumice. If they survive their winter journey from Connecticut to Michigan. 💚💚💚

    I'm so late about Hoya, and always skipped Hoya videos from you for some reasons. Since I bought my first two Hoyas yesterday, and according to your video, I believe it is named Carnosa green form and the other one with very small leaves, I'm still researching what named is, because seller only labeled "Tanaman Hoya", so here I'm stuck with your another long video. Thanks Sean, very very good job.

    So some weeks ago I got that Hoya that looks like an upside down butt with variegation in the middle. I got it as a cutting and it is putting out new leaves. It is my first one and it is my new ❤️. Depending on how this one goes and if I can get another variety will try another one, you have inspired me.🙏🏾

    Far away, here, I picture Indonesia as being a big garden, lush and green but where our building was built was also once a grove of trees. We have relatively more trees than most cities but city life seems to create a need for indoor plants. Do you have indoor plants too or are most of your plants obtained to grow outside but still close to your residence? I have one Hoya which in many years only bloomed once, but it was wonderful while it lasted. There are some tips and gems of info about different Hoyas in this video. So audience, pay attention to catch these. 😊Thank you!
