Great swap makes the truck much more useable. Also it's great working with a guy like Clint who knows what to do and does it without any instruction! Things seem to go more smoothly that way.
To get the diesel gearing you want use the Dana80 out of a late 90s freightliner step van..like a snap on tool truck. 8:25 it has the six lug buds so your wheels will bolt right up it’s a disc brake rear end and should have a 331 ratio so with your tires 1800 RPM should be about 62 mph… I did this swap into a 1956 F 8:25 600 and have been driving it for 15 years
It's a great engine swap, while it's sad that the old engine is gone, the new engine is great because it will have a better fuel economy, easier to maintain parts wise and it'll be stronger when it comes to transporting cars or cargo! Not to mention, the engine looks good in the bay, to an untrained eye they'd probably think it's the factory engine.
You will love the reliability, simplicity and MPG of the 12 valve Cummins. Mine can sit 3-4 weeks, and with just a mere bump of the key, it fires right up every time. If you do not have the 2 speed rear axle, you may still have to consider a higher r&p gear ratio to yield an ideal cruising/towing speed while keeping the Cummins max torque range at 2000rpm.
Nice work and great fitting into your truck and you guys made a great team and it runs. You should definitely get some more power and speed and be satisfied with your truck now 🎉❤😅
what you could use for a Fan ,is one from a Mercedes ML . They are almost as big as your rad, but require a controller to regulate the power to the fan motor. I understand guys over on the main mopar forum have figured this out and Run Mercedes C class fans (cheap at most car scrappers) on big block powered cars.
You should really add a crossmember back at the front spring rear hangers. I've dealt with a lot of trucks that people removed those and that leads to the frame or front cab mount brackets cracking. People think it will be fine with a crossmember in front and behind them. But there is a lot of twisting forces in that area.
I absolutely love this. The idea of repowering old rigs like this is where it's at for me, but driving that in the rain with all the sparks hitting the glass is gonna be fun #WiperShredder *Edit* not giving you 'ish' just I've wrecked a few screens over the years with work.. my last work truck was a nightmare with all the spark burns on the glass
Great work guys! Just wondering how you will overcome the vacuum brake booster issue? Vacuum pump or hydrovac brake booster? When I swapped a diesel into my '46 Chevy COE I used a GM hydrovac off of a C30 pickup and the power steering pump on the diesel ran it great.
@IronTrapGarage I guess I was just more or less making sure you were thinking about an intercooler. I've been building diesel trucks and tractors for almost 30 years this is your first.
I am getting ready to swap a 12v 5.9 Cummins into a 1969 FORD N600 that currently has a 330 V-8 FE engine. I expect the frame mounts are very similar to yours. Do you have any photos showing the slight modifications you made to the cross member and mounts? Then the old girl will be used as a car hauler.
"WOWSER!" 😮 Just how many days and hours did it take you guys to get it to where it is now? As always, Matt, you and the guys, "The Crew" did something fantastic to the ol' Ford, and I bet that the ol' gal is going to be on the road for another 25½ years to come!😅😂 Your buddy, the Cummins Man, is a great guy too👍he wasn't shy at all about jumping right in there to bust ass and knuckles to get this job done. Great work everyone! Great Show today also. Thanks for sharing all of your skills and hard work. Y'all deserve the day off.... but only on your regular scheduled day off, ok? OKAY! 👌👍✌️😁😎🇺🇸 "AMERICAN MADE, AMERICAN PROUD!" 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
So what rear are you going to use.. alot of your top speed problems are in the rear i would think.. prob has 556 gears... Hopefully you can do a ring and pinion swap and keep the stock rear....
A friend gave me a low mile 32 Essex Super Six 4 door unusable artifact. 60hp won't go, mechanical brakes won't stop, tractor steering won't turn. Got the actual Super Six, (Ford 300) figuring couple of days swap. Nope, had to cut frame at the fire wall to extend it. Replaced 300 throttle body with Weber side draft. 60 bird rear springs matched Essex spring mounts. F1 dropped axle/disk brakes and 4 runner power steer column also easy install. The topper was filling in Essex roof with rare 60 bird moon roof (don't hate me, bird t-boned long ago). Now a proper usable cruiser. Luck favors the bold.
Really enjoy your channel but it's not a good idea to have dogs hanging round your shop when your plasma cutting and welding, they have eyes that need protecting Too !

Nice Guy, was good working with him, looking forward to the next episode, Love Reading, England ........... (as usual)

Good morning friends, should be very interesting to see this video of the engine swap. 😊
Morning Matt!!! Git er done!! I like it! As I mentioned, I would love to do the Cummins swap in my one ton pickup.....way to many projects!!
Awesome swap truck will be useful. Again good work
Excellent fab work! Nicely done! Thanks!
Cool swap
Really enjoying this series, cool swap, will be a great truck.
GREAT VIDEO MATT AND CLINT!!! TOTALLY AWSOME FABRICATION!!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!! I LEARNED SO MUCH.
I love your usual hot rod builds but it is cool to see this build from you guys
Glad you enjoy it!
Most important bit is making an old unusable into an old usable with class.
That’s no small task! Good job!
Hey Moon! We love your videos Matt. Glad you picked a diseal engine for the big red truck. Hey Mike and little fella.
Look'n good guys, at least the gas engine had a big radiator so you shouldn't have any cooling problems. I'm anxious to see it running and driving.
Friends with knowledge is good 😂😂

Don't think so
@@MrJeep75 Why not? From the 60s through to the 80s you could get the medium and heavy duty trucks with Cummins diesels and Allison automatics.
Dat's gunna be a cool ride I guarantee.
First big satisfying day in any engine swap, going to be a great tow vehicle
Impressive progress in two days guys! Team ITG grooving like that harpmonica track! Looking forward to the next one!
Con grat,s. Turned it into a real truck.👍👍👍😁🇦🇺
This is one build I've been looking forward too. Thanks.

13:00 Considering this truck's intended future use, hoping to see single circuit brake hydraulics swapped out for dual before this baby hits the road.
On the list.

Not a bad idea! I figured I’d start with a cheap electric slim fan off the web and a temp controller /thermostat
Love your videos / regards from Norway
That big block Ford, with a cam, intake, and headers would make an outstanding hot rod engine.
It isn’t a big block. It’s a ford medium engine. Basically no aftermarket for the engine.
This is a killer swap. The truck will be rad and more capable now.
Nice swap.😊😊
Coming along nicely Definitely fits good in the truck

Great work you guys!
I don’t know Jack about diesel, but have seen a lot of UA-cam sites I watch say 12 valves are the way to go
Central California watching
Matt thank you for the update on the car hauler !
As usual looks like a nice job
Now you’ll need better brakes. Really cool engine swap!

Pretty slick truck there is a brewery in Indianapolis built a truck like that with a Indy car in it.
Classic truck rescue maybe be interested he’s in Oregon 😮
I had an old chain hoist like that hanging from a 2x6 back in the sixties. Scary.
6:07 Matt your more interested in torque not horsepower for your application.
Was the front cover dowel pin mod done?
Yes I did the KDP quite a while ago
@@clintttm Why are you answering instead of Matt?
Because I was reading through the comments and he’s out working? Why are you bitching instead of not bitching?
Yea quit complaining. Your question was answered
@@IEchuckie I'm asking a question not complaining. Know the difference tough guy.

The power steering unit on these Cummins motors has a vacuum pump built in with it actually
Dude!!! Nice job!!( ✌️
I think I might be related to that weirdo with the red beard
Looking Good.

#PHILLYPHILLY 🇺🇸
did i hear a comment on an electric hoist conversion from the new guy
He was in on the joke
Matt, I assume you will be changing out the vacuum brake booster and that SINGLE circuit master cylinder to something like a Hydroboost brake system?
It has a vacuum pump on the engine. Yes on the master cylinder
I am impressed.
Big red truck. Brt... name it Bert. Lol
I talked to moon and he says he wants a c in the truck and practically double dog dares you to do it his tail straight up
Is there enough room in front of the radiator for the intercooler?
There should be JUST enough room to fit a smaller first gen cooler with some light modifications
We have a welder and a plasma cutter. Yes there’s enough room.
@IronTrapGarage I guess I was just more or less making sure you were thinking about an intercooler. I've been building diesel trucks and tractors for almost 30 years this is your first.
I would've put a 460 in it
I’m really surprised that no one makes a swap kit for a Cummins diesel into a 65 F600 😆
Haha me too!
Has to be a huge need fo it😂

We took the transmission crossmember and moved it forward and narrowed it to fit in between the frame rails up front hold the front motor mounts.
Thanks
😀👍👍
Is that a new lathe ? I thought Matt had a smaller one
The swap seemed to go pretty smooth on video but, I’m sure there were a few hiccups along the way. I hope it gives you what you were looking for.
Boy you aren’t kidding
Always hiccups. But mainly just us overthinking stuff or missing the simple solutions. We’re smarter (I think) after each one!

Might be a good time to switch it to hydro boost brakes.

You should just scrap her now
So you used the same fuel tank !? Or did I miss something ?
Same tank just drained and cleaned. Diesel don’t care haha
Yes and added a fuel return line into the bottom filler neck that goes down into the tank.
Did you have to pee ? Them gams just couldn't stay still could they. LOL
Your vacuum breaks are not Goin to work with that going to need a vacuum pump
There’s on on the engine.
