Do you find the center autofocus an issue? I was thinking grabbing focus then locking it off would still make it quick to use autofocus for wedding days and events. Thoughts?
@@AtomicPixel Letting it grab focus and then locking it off is the way to go. Mapping AF lock to button 7 (the button on the side handle) makes it easier.
My colleague and I were just discussing this. I dislike the plastically look and jittery feel of watching 4K films. I do agree that 4K is great for music videos but for film I love the classic look and motion blur that 1080 offers.
@@hyperreelmediafilmworks8579 Motion blur and colour have nothing to do with resolution... Like, the motion blue is exactly the same if all other settings are the same, nothing changes just because you're shooting at a higher resolution.
@@TechnoBabbleOf course shooting at a higher resolution also makes for more detailed motion blur. It's still blurry because, well, it's blurry, duh, but still has more information than 1080p videos and therefore the motion blur is softer as well.
I've got my C100 mkII in December 2015 and sold it in April 2021. I miss this camera. I worked with ARRI, RED, C300 mkII, but I miss how fast you could work with this camera. Run n gun! Also image quality was incredible.
Great video! I absolutely love the c100 mark II. It has aged incredibly well. It's almost the PERFECT camera for small high school, summer camp, or college film programs because the files are so easy to edit, the camera is so rugged, and the form factor makes it is easy to learn.
I love this series of revisiting older cameras. These old beasts still have a lot going for them - at a very affordable cost. Thanks for doing these reviews, Caleb!
I think what I'd really want is a C200 Mk-II with some proper 10-bit 4:2:2 codecs. Having to choose between RAW and 8-bit feels strange, since even a lot of professional shooters would take 10-bit over RAW for the simpler workflow and storage savings. I suppose the C70 kind of fills that role for most people though.
Here's a camera that needs to be in this lineup: JVC LS 300 (yes, JVC, you read that right). It's probably the best "underdog" older cine camera out there.
2020 Oscars best documentary winner American Factory was shot on this camera. If it's good enough for the academy it's good enough for most of us :) Personally i love my c200!
Still using this camera today, love it. Keep thinking I want something newer but hard to justify anything much better than this, and especially at the price. I also think it has better low light quality than it was given credit for here. I've seen footage shot outside at night that's still amazing . Who needs 4k anyway when 99.9% of us are just shooting for online streaming, most of which is viewed on a phone.
You can use very cheap lightweight EF-S IS lenses since The C100 M2 has a Super-35-Sensor. Image stabilization is a game-changer in run and gun. Love the Canon 10-18mm 4.5-5.6 IS STM on this Camera.
I used to mainly shoot with a Panasonic GH4 and G7 but I found a barely used C100 Mk II on eBay back in November and it has been my favorite camera to shoot with. So many featured packed into this thing and it feels so good to hold, too! It has made my video workflow so much more efficient and the quality is amazing! An absolute workhorse of a camera!
Still use my 2 C100 Mark II's every week for weddings, corporate, and pro video shoots. The image and DPAF is still amazing to this day especially if you don't have to deliver in 4k. Going to update to C70's soon but I will always keep my C100MKII's forever!
Love the c100 and have used many of them over the years. Always thought it to be a perfect “youtuber” camera when using EF-S glass. Shocked more youtubers don’t use it… but I know H3H3 has used many for years and so do almost all the LA comedy podcasters.
You forgot another difference between the C100 I and II, the two has a built in mic on the body, so you can get scratch audio even without the handle or a mic attached. Seems small but it screwed me over on a shoot where the DP didn't realize that. Cool vid. I bought the C100 II at the beginning of 2020.
We run a C300iii and C70 but kept hold of our 2 C100ii’s because they’re still so versatile and produce a beautiful image. Probably my favourite camera, long live the C100ii.
Used this camera as everyday workhorse for over 2 years. If you nail exposure and WB, the clog it delivers its gorgeous. The battery lasts almost all day and so does one 64gb SD Card. The 8bit only is a bummer but its easily the best 8bit i'll ever see. You can easily jack this thing up to 2400 ISO and it still looks fine! Wouldnt buy this for myself but it's reliable, ergonomic and just a pleasure to use.
I use the Canon C100 mark I as my main camera for EVERYTHING, bought in 2019 for around 1k. Other than its size it's great and the battery life is so incredible.
I got a great deal locally in Michigan, a camera+Lens+5 batteries+charger + little rig body cage + a water and air sealed hard carrying case. for $1850 . I took it to my two months overseas trip. The results was unbelievable, just the fact that it looks professional it was a easy pass to many events that I didn’t have tickets for also clients takes you way seriously!! than showing up with a DSLR or Mirrorless.
I've been shooting with the C100 mkII for close to 7yrs now and love it. Best camera I've ever owned. It just gets the job done without any fuss and it is built like a tank. The only negative is its shape and weight (kinda top heavy even when stripped down) makes it challenging to fly on a gimbal. I can only last a few minutes at a time before my arm feels like its going to fall off. I now have an XC10 as a B camera and for gimbal use and it is so easy to match with the C100 (although the XC10 is not great in low light).
We still have one of these and use it ALL THE TIME. If you are shooting only 1080p and looking for a new camera. Don't buy a new one....get one of these! Hands down best used deal anywhere. Also, amazing review. I don't think anyone does reviews as well as you do! Superb! Best part was the light burning out...I actually LOL'd at the "RIP"
I just replaced mine a month ago. The C100's a great camera that can really take a beating, I put mine thru hell. That said, the lack of 10bit & 4K, plus the fact that the auto-focus is only centred really limits it in 2021. I wish the C70 would have been a better replacement (no full-frame, no EV, and kinda expensive). Had to go with Sony A7S3. Nice vid, tho.

Great point! Never had issues with Canon's cinema cameras and have heard WILD stories of them falling, breaking in half and still running after a little gaffe tape!
have 2 C100mkii's that I use for interviews, music events (opera, and orchestra) and some other bits and pieces...reliable & good enough image quality for my purposes

Got one with 29 hours on it in damn near mint condition for around $1600, kitted it out with an 18-35 Sigma 1.8, Rails, Matte Box, Follow Focus, and it is absolutely stunning. Literally pricing out cinema cams for work right now and wishing the c70 was in this form factor. We are still considering getting the c100ii because the price is so good!
The C100 is amazing. Our church uses it. I want to get my hands on one and check it out vs. what I have. I am already a Canon fanboy but the C100 mk.2 does impress me. Time has been friendly to this camera. Great tech stays on point today.
I bought one 6 months ago and it’s made shooting such a pleasure. It’s a fantastic camera. But also - it’s made shooting on a non cinema camera a lot harder. I’m spoiled with my NDs and XLRs
I have two C100 mkii cameras, still use them for weddings/events. Yeah they're bigger compared to the newer smaller cameras but they've Never let me down in 5+ yrs of use.
I work for a small church with a low budget, we got 2 of these last year for our live streaming setup due to the pandemic and they blew me away with how well they held up image wise
Hands down the C100 MKII is the best 1080p camera ever made thus far. I purchased it about 4-5 years ago and it is still a workhorse. For more serious work such as feature films and commercials, I defer to my Ursa Mini Pro. But for corporate talking heads, reality show pitches, low budget indie's, and any job that requires 1080p deliverables, this camera can't be beat. I will never sell mine and am actually looking to buy a used 2nd one after years of owning the first one. I can easily see myself continuing to use it for years to come. It's that solid and proven.

It's nice for sure, but you can also get an R7 now for about the same price. It shoots 10-bit, has still photos, in-body image stabilization, even better autofocus, and, of course, has 4K up to 60 fps as well as 1080p up to 120 fps. You can even get an XLR add-on for it. The only reason to get the C100 Mark II now is for the built-in ND filters and the ergonomics. And, if anyone could rig it up properly to improve the ergonomics, it's Caleb. So, by the time you kit out an R7, it could get a bit more expensive, but it's still worth it to get the improved video specs.
This channel is a manifestation of gear heads inner dialogue. New cam or older cheaper and proven work horse. The MkII editing workflow is so fast with our 2021 pc’s and macs too.
Still enjoying mine! Great worktool that helps you get the job done if you make stuff for social media. Wouldn't mind getting another one even though there are more options available that push more pixels.
Great little cam but I still prefer the image coming out of the C300 (mk I). 50mbps 8bit 4.2.2 was a bit more usable in post. 1080p60 and AF were nice tho.
i always find a huge disconnect between used prices cited in used gear reviews and reality price points , almost like channels rely on the adrenaline rush of great deals to create excitement , even without looking i'm guessing the reality price point is $2 if you are lucky , lets see

I shot the majority of my school projects on the original C100. At the time it didn’t like it that much. looking back I didn’t know enough to really appreciate good colors and built in NDs
I have been using this as my main cam for the past 2 years. I pair it up with an EOS R in clog1 as my b-camera (and gimbal cam). The XLRs on the C100 are a godsend for corporate interviews. Also, I can just throw on an XLR shotgun mic with a 70-200 lens, and I’m all set for event work.
I'm sure someone else has mentioned it in these comments, but the a6400, while 8bit, is kind of an unfair comparison since the reason the 4K is sharp is because it's oversampled from a 6K sensor. Figured I'd point that out, but either way...the C100mkii still looks great in 2023 if you upscale the footage to 4K.
I don't like how you can't have the body up against your body for extra stabilization, since the LCD is on the back; you have to hold it out in front of you more. I prefer the FS5 where you can have it further up on the handle and have the camera against your chest.
I do sports videography and still use my 2 C100 MkII cameras all the time when filming sporting events. I just wish it could do face tracking with any lens or at least allow you to move the focus point.
Love this camera! I used it for several years in an event production company & worked great in ballrooms and the woods. They’re still using it in one of their studios. So easy to use and the quality is great. Might have to pick up a used one now that the price is so good.
C100mkii mark ii was my first cinema camera. Shot with a pair of them for years before finally ditching them for a c300 mark iii when it released. Still a great camera in 2021
I’ve had 2 of these for 5 years now, and see no need to change them! My only wish is the auto focus box could jog left or right a little so a subject doesn’t need to be dead centre.
I was close to upgrading to C70 but instead kept my C100ii and instead got new (used) lenses, more audio gear and Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter that makes this camera even better. Btw if you are looking for a stabiliser I'd recommend the Zhiyun Crane 3S, flies this camera fully rigged no problem even w the screen etc
I love your view on the cameras and this series. It is so nice to see you comparing the sony alpha 6400 with this old c100 ii and realizing the picture is much softer and nicer to look on the canon.
I purchased mine a few months ago and loved it. Though given some financial difficulties I have recently listed for sale. After watching this video, the thought of letting it go is so much worse. C100 mkii gang ✊🏽

Yes, color quality over resolution! With all the race to 8k and beyond, many forget that our screens (and eyes) have a limit too.

It does?! My 300MKII does...but I've never noticed that the 100MKII does. It only records two audio tracks. Am I missing something here?

i always find a huge disconnect between used prices cited in used gear reviews and reality price points , almost like channels rely on the adrenaline rush of great deals to create excitement , even without looking i'm guessing the reality price point is $2 if you are lucky , lets see

Love these. One of these on the C500 mark i would be awesome, as there is really no videos on it in the last 10 years and seems like it could be a bargain at under $2k these days.
Is the 1080p on the C100 Mark ii comparable to the 1080p on the EOS R?

I have one of these for my high school video program. The one thing you forgot to mention was that this camera is almost kid proof. It really is an amazing value.
I really enjoy this series! I only just upgraded from my C100 a month ago to the BMPCC 6K Pro. The C100 has been such a pleasure to use! I'll still be using it for specific types of content that I would not need a rigged 6K Pro for.

Trying to find a newer cinema camera that is comparable to this one in terms of features-albeit with higher resolutions like 2K and 4K. What do you got?
I shot the majority of my school projects on the original C100. At the time it didn’t like it that much. looking back I didn’t know enough to really appreciate good colors and built in NDs
I have been using this as my main cam for the past 2 years. I pair it up with an EOS R in clog1 as my b-camera (and gimbal cam). The XLRs on the C100 are a godsend for corporate interviews. Also, I can just throw on an XLR shotgun mic with a 70-200 lens, and I’m all set for event work.
I'm sure someone else has mentioned it in these comments, but the a6400, while 8bit, is kind of an unfair comparison since the reason the 4K is sharp is because it's oversampled from a 6K sensor. Figured I'd point that out, but either way...the C100mkii still looks great in 2023 if you upscale the footage to 4K.

Shooting a feature length doc on a C100 Mark 1 right now. Still an incredible camera!
I don't like how you can't have the body up against your body for extra stabilization, since the LCD is on the back; you have to hold it out in front of you more. I prefer the FS5 where you can have it further up on the handle and have the camera against your chest.
I do sports videography and still use my 2 C100 MkII cameras all the time when filming sporting events. I just wish it could do face tracking with any lens or at least allow you to move the focus point.
I love my c100! It’s underrated.
Love this camera! I used it for several years in an event production company & worked great in ballrooms and the woods. They’re still using it in one of their studios. So easy to use and the quality is great. Might have to pick up a used one now that the price is so good.
C100mkii mark ii was my first cinema camera. Shot with a pair of them for years before finally ditching them for a c300 mark iii when it released. Still a great camera in 2021

I’ve had 2 of these for 5 years now, and see no need to change them!
My only wish is the auto focus box could jog left or right a little so a subject doesn’t need to be dead centre.
I was close to upgrading to C70 but instead kept my C100ii and instead got new (used) lenses, more audio gear and Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter that makes this camera even better. Btw if you are looking for a stabiliser I'd recommend the Zhiyun Crane 3S, flies this camera fully rigged no problem even w the screen etc

Finally just sold all 3 of my C100 Mark IIs last week. They were such workhorses but too cumbersome in 2021. Great cameras.

I'd agree with this. I've had a C100 mkii since 2018 and there are still loads of times I pick this over my other camera, the Pocket 6k Pro
I love your view on the cameras and this series. It is so nice to see you comparing the sony alpha 6400 with this old c100 ii and realizing the picture is much softer and nicer to look on the canon.
I purchased mine a few months ago and loved it. Though given some financial difficulties I have recently listed for sale. After watching this video, the thought of letting it go is so much worse. C100 mkii gang ✊🏽
