Episode 99
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse is final game in the trilogy for the NES, and it's an absolute masterpiece! This game ditches the free exploration of Simon's Quest, and returns to the action focus of the original.
Castlevania 3 takes everything that made the original Castlevania awesome and adds even more - New playable characters, branching paths, and more bosses than ever before!
So how did this game get made, and what happened to the North American version that made it so difficult? In today's episode we'll find out then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* The best way to complete EVERY Stage, regardless of which character you choose!
* How to recruit all three characters!
* TONS of secret codes to get more lives, earlier characters, and more!
* Wall Meat - Where to find all of it!
* The SECRET GLITCH that can WARP you all the way TO THE FINAL STAGE!
* DETAILED MAPS for every level!
* Where do all these branching paths go? We'll look at every route!
* Hidden 1-UPs, and other secrets - We'll find them all!
* MULTIPLE strategies for EVERY BOSS - Even COUNT DRACULA himself... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Poor Grant Danasty. First his entire family was killed, then he was turned into a demon and placed as a boss in a skippable stage, then he got turned into a zombie-mummy in Castlevania Judgement and then finally he got next to completely forgotten or/and ignored in the Netflix series. This underappreciated Castlevania hero truly deserves a better fate!
why did you write that?
@@mrbuttercup37 Because it needed to be said.
@@mrbuttercup37 what a horrible night to have a curse?
I boycotted the Netflix show because of that.
It was better for Grant to not be part of that mess.
In 1992, I mailed (snail mail) Nintendo Power to ask for advice on how to beat Dracula. I remember they recommended the axe, but I ended up beating the game before I got their response! Oh, the old days…
Alucard is able to use holy sub-weapons because his mother is from a "holy bloodline" according to Koji Igarashi and in SotN there was supposed to be an alignment system in which Alucard became either good or evil depending on his use of sub-weapons(good) or evil(dark magic). Also Sypha is a female who disguised herself as a male in order to escape from hunted down and executed as a witch. Nothing was mistranslated in English it was designed to keep the disguise going until the end.
Regarding Sypha, is that the reason in the games? In the crappy Netflix show (well, it was pretty good and then turned crappy) they have her dress as a man to avoid trouble while travelling. Haven't read much of the lore outside of the games, but I know in the games she works for the church rather than being a gnostic mouthpiece for Warren Ellis's anti-religious beliefs in the Netflix show
let them bitch, the salt is hilarious :-p@kollie79
@@ARescueToaster The show has its own continuity anyways, and never pretended to be canon.
...Also, Netflix Sypha's pretty based, actually.
You are my favorite channel on UA-cam. There is literally nothing I can find to criticize that you haven't already addressed and improved upon. Great work!
Hands down, easily the best channel doing this kind of content!
I totally agree. In a world where so many people are doing the exact same thing, he has managed to find the exact right recipe to make something great. I didn’t even want to watch this channel. UA-cam just kept recommending it so much that I eventually succumbed and watched one video. And once I did, I was hooked.
also agree!
@@JazGalaxy I never had a nes growing up, but I love this content.
@@JazGalaxy same
Shout out to Aunt Lynne who worked at Meijer for 25 years and bought this for me in 1990 for Christmas with her extreme discount. It was always one of the favorites of my small NES collection growing up. Now that I’m older I can see what an amazing achievement this game is - outstanding graphics and possibly the best OST of any NES release, not to mention the replay value with branching paths and party members. Unashamed to admit I’ve never finished it to this day, but that changes now with UCBVG’s episode. Hell yes!
That’s awesome. My oldest nephew is 16. Buying him Zelda tomorrow and my youngest nephew is 2. I can’t wait til the 2 year old gets into games. Uncle T is going to buy him every game he wants
Did you beat the game yet
Shout out to Aunt Lynne!
Man, that warp glitch was crazy. How did anyone ever figure that out to put it in a magazine?
Also i appreciate the little magazine slips and stuff you put in the sides. Your channel is like a Nintendo Power Game Guide come to life and I love it.
Speedrunners know all glitches in this game they can beat it in under an hr
@@chadmabe7069 Yes, but the thing is *how* does someone figure it out? It must've taken a lot of trial and error to figure out that sequence given how many steps it takes. Just like it takes any speedrunner hours and hours to be able to clear the game that quickly.
@@OhhhMyAxels I'm pretty sure they have a way to monitor memory states etc. Check out this explanation of how the Super Mario World credits warp works: ua-cam.com/video/Jf9i7MjViCE/v-deo.html
I'm sure the way they figured this out is how they find most of these things.
@@yGKeKe That is still a ton of work to decipher and figure out.
@@OhhhMyAxels Oh for sure. Speedrunners are crazy dude.
One of the best Castlevania games, and still holds up today.
Super Castlevania IV is far better
@@ZeeshanAhmed No it isnt. It isnt even the best on the SNES, lol...
I own three carts of super castlevania and I’m quite happy over it 🔥
@@ChromeCobra420 you 10??
@@ChromeCobra420 There are only two Castlevania games on the SNES and while Dracula X is overly hated, SC4 is vastly superior. Rondo of Blood and SC4 are the goats.
Castlevania III was our favorite of the nes trilogy. The art, style, and feel of that series really felt so dialed in with this release.
I preferred Simon’s quest because 3 just felt like a redone and admittedly way better Castlevania 1. Simons quest was unique and I will always love that game the most despite the cryptic parts.
@@Black01Dragon I liked Simon's Quest but it felt rushed and unfinished. The sloppy translation also hurt the game. If you didn't have access to Nintendo Power or friends who had already beaten the game, good luck deciphering some of the cryptic puzzles.
Does anyone else wish Trevor wore his cape/cloak in the Sypha ending, or is that just me?
You've done a really good job with creating your brand. You have a vision and a really solid foundation for your videos. You're even training a new recruit! I just wanted to give you credit where it's due. This is a great channel and I really enjoy your videos.
I tell you what, I am 44 years old and I got this game for my birthday January 29th 1991. I have never watched someone else play this until tonight, November 27th 2022. It is so good to see the younger generation playing these games that I grew up playing over the past 36 years, good job on this game and all of the other games I have watched you play so far!
This is my favorite on the original system.
Still a classic to this day. It was quite the adventure for the Castlevania series and a great set up for the SNES with IV
I was my brothers hero when I beat this game as a kid! This game was and still is absolutely ruthless but still one of my favorite all time games especially with its rocking soundtrack! Each Hero brought dynamic gameplay to the table along with their specialized levels, they were all so much fun to play!
I love the Dracula fight so much. One of the best in the series. The international music is still incredible, and the challenge is top tier. The level design and boss fights just rule, and the immersion is pretty great. Wish I had the Japanese cart, one of these days. Thanks for the video! Ton of fun to watch this even if you’ve played it a hundred times
One of my favorite games growing up. The multiple endings gave it such a high replay value
Oh Castlevania III, one of the best games on the NES and my personal favorite. It's also one of the best in the whole series. The feeling of dealing the last blow to Dracula after a long and hard battle is just epic. The weird ways in which they made some of the bosses laughable in the original Famicom version was also interesting though it's soundtrack is still amazing and helped getting you in the right mood of fighting Dracula's dark army, especially using Grant.
This was a massive episode! the way you took the time to show everything within the game left me speechless.
I'd like to add that with this game you can see an evolution of the Castlevania formula:
Castlevania 1 - linear
Castlevania 2 - open world/exploration
Castlevania 3 - multiple paths
And if you merge all 3 you will have Castlevania Symphony of the night.
I really enjoyed this episode, your skills are getting as big as that pup of you. 🤣
My dad's friend had this game and the giant NES pad controller ... I would play for hours every time we went over there ... this channel is so great for remembering great times
I’ll never forget the day my dad picked me up from after-school daycare, and the giant NES pad controller he’d ordered had arrived!
He knew I’d be so excited, so he brought it along and surprised me in the car.
Good times.
One of my favorite games from my childhood! Awesome! Love this series and all the detail each episode gets. Someday when I'm retirement age I'll dedicate some time to going back through all these old classics one more time and it'll be great to do it with all these tips in my pocket.
Rented the game so many times, even after finishing it, just because it was so fun, challenging and with high replay value in general.
The alúdase path by far the hardest. I still remember those nights playing multiple continues getting pass the nightmare song stages, having literally nightmares with that song playing in my brain.
Amazing choice of a video for this Samhain!!
I've said it before and I'll say it again "This channel is like Saturday morning cartoons for gamers". Never fails to impress you with the game play the secrets and strategies to get you through, the history of how the game came into existence as well as who some of the people that made it possible, and the informational extras on the side while playing adds to the viewing experience. Thank you for this fantastic channel.
Greetings from the BIG SKY. Again, I found my SNES and it's Advantage controller all functional. Now I have both the NES and SNES with Advantage controllers functional again. Glad I kept all those games. Just what an old man needs now.
Poor Belmonts. This curse will never end...
Thanks for completing this series. Looking forward to your 100th video. Also so close to 100k.
You really deserve this Silver Playbutton. I've heard it could protect you from werewolves. ;-)
curse ended with julius.
@@anotherland2462 Didn't know that. Thank you.
This is the castlevania I started on. I had so much fun playing and beating it many times. I like choosing the path that gives my Sypha Belnades. Her Spells are fun and effective.
Alacard is actually Adtian Tepes, half human half vampire being (a Dhampir). Technically a living being who drinks blood if he wishes and could become a full vampire when dead.
I can finally beat the Castlevania Anniversary Collection. Keep up the great work, and hope you do the rest of the collection!
This has to be the most complete walkthrough ever made for this game.
Also, Syfa and Trevor? Adorable couple. Happy those two crazy kids found each other. Alucard gets the cool trophy though.
What a classic and it's one NES game that I can play over and over again. But I'll never forget getting this game for Christmas, I was stoked beyond belief. Good times!! I still use a few stage music as my alarm clock.
I just shared some of your old videos in two FB gaming forums. The TMNT series. I'm not a youtuber, and I only shared one video I made in one forum and I got 60K views and 133 subscribers from that one video. You are far more worthy than I to get more attention for all the work you put into these videos, so I shared them around hoping it will bring more traffic to your sight. You are really providing a public service. We really do value the work you do! Thank you!
That's cool
@@jc.1191 Now the number is up to 191 subscribers and almost 80K views. And I haven't posted any new content yet. I'm on the fence if I want to spend the cash to get those figures here to make more videos. At least in my case I don't expect to make a living off of UA-cam. I would like to go through the figures in more detail and try to match up their accessories. That would be entertaining for myself and others. But also not excited about the figures being in Taiwan because I don't think the high heat and humidity are good for them long term. So if I were to ship them here I'd have to make some sort of game plan of what happens next.
One of the truly great NES games, used to get together with several buddies to play this as a kid. Still hang out of some of them and this game comes up in conversations to this day.
This by far my favorite of the classic Castlevania games. This game does not get the love it deserves.
Once again, awesome video! I am one of the few weirdos whose favorite old school Castlevania is Simon's Quest but still enjoying this video.
That's my favorite one on the nes too. It's the most fun to replay, and not ridiculously hard.
I think this is the best 8-bit game ever made. I honestly know only a few games that rival it, and I've played a ton.
Awesome content.
You'll be at 100k soon!
Gosh, I remember playing this game as a kid and thinking this was the hardest friggin game in the world. I am realizing now I must have unknowingly chosen the absolute worst combination of paths to go down 😂
I had a good chuckle over Grant leaving with Red Pants and Red Bandana "He'd better be careful what neighborhoods he goes through" lmao
Maybe Dracula was a Crip all along, and that's why he went after Grant and his family? 🤯
This channel needs to have a million subscribers it truly deserves it
This game was so amazing. This, Deja Vu, and Ninja Gaiden 2 was a hell of a Christmas as a kid in the early 90’s.
i got dd3 and gauntlet 2 for christmas back at that time
Great advice for life -- if you find yourself falling, "you may be able to save yourself by turning yourself into a bat so keep that in mind"
Oh I am PSYCHED for this!
One of my favorites. I still come back to this game from time to time, and it really shows what the NES was capable of. I've never beaten it, but still is a lot of fun.
My favorite from the NES Castlevania trilogy :) Boy is it fun, but also difficult.
"We're not out of the woods yet" I see what you did there
What a classic! Easily the best Castlevania on NES. I love the choices you have to make between multiple paths and the different characters you can choose to have join Trevor, the decision of which even affect the ending. It's an 8-bit masterpiece. Happy Halloween, U Can Beat Video Games!
Just finished this with the Syfa path. You made this look easy. Cheers.
The 2nd loop in this game is pretty brutal. Other than additional enemies in areas that didn't have them, it also replaces all the medusa heads with skulls and they fly even more erratic than the medusa heads do. I made a challenge to myself to beat every path on the 2nd loop with every secondary character, since you start the 2nd loop with whichever character you finished the first loop with. Also, you can not get any other secondary characters in the 2nd loop. They just do not appear when you beat the boss of their stage.
Love Castlevania 3. It's one of my most played classic cv games. Love the branching paths and different characters to give plenty of replay ability.
I beat this game a few months ago, it is definitely the hardest in the NES trilogy, but man is it fantastic! Thank you for covering these challenging games and making them easier for newcomers!
Also, I can't believe I actually managed to beat the final boss on my first try on the Sypha path, one of my biggest achievements as a gamer
You won my like early with the "Load bearing boss" bit. Amazing job as always.
That was pretty funny
Cool vid. I liked the entry codes. One thing you forgot to mention about Grant is that he can throw daggers and axes from the ceiling and walls. I fight Medusa with Grant by throwing axes down on her from the ceiling. Also, at 49:35 there is a Double in the block at the bottom left of the screen.
Also, the one watching from the shadows was probably meant to be some villager who witnesses Trevor standing there as the castle crumbles, and that villager tells the tale of Trevor's heroism. However, with the addition of Curse of Darkness, it's possible that the person in the shadows is Issac, one of Dracula's loyal followers who was too late in arriving to help defend the castle.
Finally!! This is the one console Castlevania game I have yet to beat. Thank you!
"Load-bearing Boss" is my favorite term now.
I really appreciate how naturally "wall meat" rolls off your tongue like it's an everyday-standard-totally normal object.
This is a great walkthrough of a quality I’ve not seen anywhere else. I was able to beat the game thanks to your work :)
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the sub-weapon multiplier works on the first level. Enemy kill count with sub-weapons will let you get the multiplier faster, and the candles count as a kill if you break them with your sub-weapon. You can get Holy Water x3 by the first level boss. Keep up the good work!
(Edit) Just got part way through the clocktower and noticed you mentioned the mechanic of the double/triple shot. Lol)
Medusa with Grant? Axes from the ceiling.
Also, I cannot unhear it when you say it... Chrevor jumps the penjulum to chry his shtrategy against Jracula.
Great video, I enjoyed it. Thanks.
Omg I've played this game so many times & I never saw just the trevor ending..such a masterful job..triumphant skill..so excellent..keep it up 🤙🏼
About time this was done
One of the best castlevania games ever. It was hard but fair for the most part
And while Trevor/Sypha is canon, he actually recruited everyone.
Great run
I love how you mention the whole map thing vs picking an exit on a stage. Because I think that very thing happens one or two games in the series from now. Richter also happens to be one of the favorites among the Belmont clan.
NOW THIS IS THE ONE WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR I FEEL SO PUMPED UP RIGHT NOW!!!
yes!!!
58:30 the colors used in the third Castlevania game are incredible. That Green against the purple background is something out of a dream! 💤💤💤😴💭💭💭💭💭🟣🟣🟣🟢🟢🟢🟪🟩🟪🟪🟣🟩🟪🟩🟩🟩🟪🟪🟩🟪🟩💭💭💭💭💭
This is my favorite Castlevania game of all time. Thanks for covering it. Love your channel.
Me Before the glitch: “ok this should be cool! Can’t wait to try”
Me 10 seconds into the glitch: “ok, this looks a little tricky but shouldn’t be that hard!”
Me 20 seconds into the glitch “ok, I guess this will take some serious practice but I’ll get it!”
Me 30 seconds into the glitch “ok, this might not be for me… this looks really difficult”
Me 40 seconds into the glitch “fast forward…”
😅😅😅
Greetings from the BIG SKY. Castlevania remains as a favorite for me.
Absolutely love the Castlevania series.. just in time for halloween
You keep coming out with the best content! This was my favorite childhood nes game!
Your dedication to your videos is remarkable. Keep up the great work. Much appreciated.
You’re my new favorite. I’m obsessed. This unlocks memories I forgot I had
2:15:53 I still remember when I beated dracula with sypha with the fire powerup. one of the most exciting things I have ever done in my life.
helped me finally beat castlevania iii for the first time ever. Thanks again so much! great video man
That skip to the end glitch is probably the most insane warp I've ever seen. How did anyone figure that out?
Easily the best of the "retro styled" Castlevanias. Branching paths, multiple characters, replayability. It's one of my all time favorites.
This is one of the most professional and entertaining UA-cam shows. Bravo, as always!
Man I can't get enough of this channel! Its like playing a game with a prima guide.
Ive been asking and waiting for this for the better of a year! Im so hyped! Thank you!
Always worth the wait! Thank you UCBVG!
I’m glad he started the video with the Japanese soundtrack. Thanks for that treat
This is a special one for me. This is my favorite Castlevania and I've only ever beaten it with Sypha because her homing balls absolutely tears apart bosses. But it took me a very long time because this game is by far the toughest Castlevania for NES. Now that I know that Urata code I can just start with Sypha....that's freaking awesome. Thanks again for a masterful playthrough.
The music on Alucards level damn it's ominous
i love your openings, its so great to hear some backround info about the games
I discovered this channel 3 to 4 months ago when I was looking up a guide for Legacy of the Wizard. Been subbed since this channel never disappoints.
That needs to be on a t-shirt, "Everyone's Favorite - spiders that drop down and shoot smaller spiders!"
Been watching this channel for over a year now and have been asking about this game since day one.. thanks for getting around to it
Another great review / guide. Thank you for your hard work to bring these to us. Bringing back more memories!! Keep up the great work buddy !!!
FINALLY!!!!!!!!! Finally you're doing Castlevania 3
I really really really like this channel a lot. Great work!
"Load bearing boss." That's clever. I like it.
When nothing came up yesterday, I knew you were working on something good! You did not disappoint!
"Dracula is a load bearing boss" My god... It all makes so sense now...
Amazing! This must have taken a long time to make! Perfect time of the year for it too. Thank you!
When I first heard about this game as a kid, I couldn’t wait to play it. Then I did, and it was hard as balls! I can’t believe people speed run it today.
Thank you so much! Thanks to you, I was finally able to complete the NES trilogy.
My fave NES Vania. Had so much fun renting this. Would always try to get farther each time. Only beat it via emulation years after childhood.
Emulation makes these old games way more tolerable.
I've been waiting for this video, since I discovered this channel. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!!
I've always liked the castlevania series however this guy is the man! He talkes the talk but more importantly he walked the walk u the man dog!!
I don't know why but the process for the final stage warp always cracks me up.
It's like Chaotic Realm levels of insanity to discover and perform.
Nice gameplay as always. Keep it up and I hope you reach 100k subs soon!
Thanks for the video UCBVG. So much nostalgia with this game. Great to see and hear your strats for completing this game. The warp is a bit much for me, but interesting to watch. Keep up the great videos!!!
Yes!!!! Thank you!!. Keep it going sir sooo happy to see this. Hands down my fav channel!
One of the best soundtracks on the NES.
I had a feeling it would be this one! So happy. After Simon's Quest, yhis was long awaited. I look forward to each of your videos, even if I am not interested in the game I always learn something new- and typically become interested half way through the video.
Love this game so much. One of the few nes games I had to get a physical copy of and play through the same day. This, castlevania 1, ninja gaiden, Mario 3, and contra are the best nes games ever made
