  • 24" plastic-top Kenmore from 1981. This is a fun machine, fairly plain-looking control panel but lots of action underneath. The straight-vane agitator is one of my favorites and is an absolute BRUTE. The "woo-woo" sound is also more high pitched compared to other belt-drives.
Sorry about not having footage of loading and the start of agitation on wash, either DVD Decrypter or Premiere Elements keeps overlapping my footage on a few clips, not sure why.

I always enjoyed the older kenmores especially the "woo-woo" they made.

For a '81 it runs like brand new. Growing up, we had a Kenmore about the same year, but with the electronic controls and the dual-action agitator. That "woo-woo" sound brings back memories

I had this very same machine in my first apartment in the early 80's.. It was a great little
machine and worked flawlessly.. Now a days everyone wants these very expensive front loaders. No Thanks, I would rather spend that money on something else and just keep using my old faithful Maytag! Enjoy your videos very much!

The first time I watched a belt driven Kenmore I was surprised when I heard the drain cycle because the washer does not pause before going into drain. The belt driven My mom's friend owned was the one with the cycle knob in the middle of the control panel and had a dual action agitator. She also owned a belt driven Whirlpool later on. the belt driven Kenmores and Whirlpools was and still is one of my favorite washers.

That rhythmic 'breathing' sound is the pump sucking air. I've got a 1978 belt-drive Whirlpool Supreme that does that.

Yeah, the "woo-woo" does bring back memories. My parents had a baby Kenmore (washer and dryer set). The agitator was the exact same one, but the controls were different (the timer control was ont he right side, and was completely round). I believe the model was a mid to late 70's model?

We had that same washer when I was a kid. Even when I was little, I recognized how they had purposefully made it look cheap and tacky compared to the better machines. We had it until the tub rusted and it was replaced with a nicer Kenmore, which was also replaced when the tub rusted.

A friend of my mom's had a Belt drive Kenmore with center dial and I recall hers having a slightly higher pitched woo-woo sound it kinda sounded like Dudrovetto's Brastemp washer.

Your right about the breathing sound, but the Woo Woo sound is the transmission, and a wide belt, i have a 1972 Lady Kenmore that has a skinny belt and it does not make the woo woo sound at all. When i installed the wider belt the woo woo returned.

    Thanks for your response.
I've seen the video you're speaking of, and, although that model is definately lower-pitched in the "woo-woo" sound than this model, there are models that have even a lower-pitched "woo-woo".
My dad had a belt-drive Kenmore at his old house, and the sound of the "woo-woo" was lower in pitch than both of these washers.
Send me a personal message and we can talk more about it.

Very few of the 24 inch models had spin sprays enabled. I think it was due to splashing of the water to the outer cabinet. However, with a short jumper across two of the timer terminals, spin sprays can be restored. You will need to look at the wiring diagram on the back service panel to figure out which pins to jump.

My 1978 belt-drive Whirlpool Supreme makes that distinct "woo-woo" sound too-but whenever I have to change the belt, I'm afraid I'll have to put a belt on that will make the woo-woo sound go away!

@tvtimetravel You are correct! The 1981 models first had "Cotton/Sturdy" on the washers, though some 1980 models continued on well into 1981, etc.

I remember that machine in the Sears store, but I can't believe it was in '81. Just doesn't seem that long ago.

Many Kenmores/Whirlpools from 1948 to 1985 has the four 7 seconds spray rines. My washer is a 1981 Kenmore eighty

What causes the woo-woo sounds to became lower in tone when ramping up to speed? Is the belt moving slower than it does normally?

  • @MustangFanNC
    @MustangFanNC 15 років тому

The woo-woo sound is by and large created by the belt. I think the pitch of it can be altered by the motor (Emerson or GE) but my experience has been that the belt can quiet a machine, or change its pitch dramatically. Just look at the quiet-pak machines with the skinny belt - they are not different mechanically at all, just the different belt and pulleys. The newness of a belt can affect this too - the more worn, the further into the pulleys the belt rides, and this changes pitch too.

@vanni9283 Some things that can determine it are the age and condition of the belt, the brand of motor or the size of the belt. I've even noticed that Dual Action machines make a completely different woo sound while washing than other belt drive Whirlpool machines.

My moms friend had a belt drive washer once and it made the same noise. I believe thats the air blowing in the drum were hearing.

If I'm lucky, I am going to have a big-daddy clone to this machine up and running soon. It's a 1982 Kenmore full-size machine with the same console. Needs some work though...

  • @vanni9283

Either that or out the pump. Regardless it's a common sound among most the older belt-drive Whirlpool/Kenmore models.

Austin - I shouldn't be telling you what to do, but be really careful with a bakelight agitator in a short centerpost machine. The don't seal air as well - they didn't have to - and one can flood a centerpost easily of the agitator becomes unsealed or the seal in the cap is dried out at all.

You mention in your description that the "woo-woo" sound of this washing machine is higher-pitched compared to other belt-drives. Do you happen to know what determines how high/low the pitch of the "woo-woo" sound is gonna be in a washer from the Kenmore/Whirlpool belt-drive family?

  • @NVHSChadSheppard1

Westytoploader, that's the way my whirlpool by kenmore sounds. Except, it rinses while it spins. How long you had that machine?

  • @deltaboy767

These Kenmo's may have been noisy, but i can tell you the cleaned the hell outta some clothes and were bullet proof, i wish Whirlpool would bring back the good reliable belt drives, and get rid of these crappy Direct drive shredmores, that don't even turn the clothes over.

    LOL
When you have time, can you do a vid with the low water setting and post?
    Thanks.
