My 1984/5 Kenmore Washer

  • Here is the Kenmore Sears Best 10-program washer with Dual Action agitator my parents bought in February 1985; it has been working non-stop ever since, having gone through several repairs, though the automatic dispensers don't work any more. It is belt-driven, as I remember the repair man had to work with the belt to install the new pump when the old pump ceased; the belt was also replaced at that same moment. It's washing one set of my clothes and one set of dad's clothes. You can see that the first item I'm putting in is my overalls - and I did this while wearing overalls! (You can't see them because my hood is hiding my straps.) The actual timing for the cottons colored cycle is 34 minutes, with the following breakdown:
    Fill
    8 minutes wash
    2 minutes neutral drain
    2 minutes spin, with 4 spray rinses
    Fill
    2 minutes rinse
    2 minutes neutral drain
    6 minutes spin, with 4 spray rinses during the first 2 minutes
    Had I chosen the permanent press cycle, the cool down would've comprised 30 seconds partial drain, 90 seconds pause (neutral), fill, and 2 minutes agitation, followed by the drain and first spin.

    I love the Sear's detergent. I bought a 17.3 lb box in early May, and I'm still using it. It's great stuff!

      Jim Kalin I’ve used there detergent ! It cleaned really well . In fact it worked better then leading national brands ! I have a front load washer & ive used sears detergent in it man that stuff worked & did a good job of getting My Landry really clean I wish you can still buy it . I’m not sure if you can

    A few years ago, I had my washer restored by sears. It had to get a new motor in it because the old one used to make knocking noises when it went into spin mode. To this day, it still wokrs like a pro! The motor has the woo-woo sound.

    Yes I remember when these dual action agitators first came out in the late 70s. I was 9 in 1976 and I remember seeing these in the Sears flyers we would get with the Sunday papers.
    Your machine would still look good today on a showroom floor. These old Kenmores had style.

    Agitators were the best machines ever - they get clothes far cleaner than any of the modern machines today. Bring them back I say !

    @penhouse861 If you notice that difference, it's because yours is one of the first direct drives, while mine is one of the last belt drives. It's not a malfunction; all Kenmore belt drives were made to work at this slower speed.

    Yes, the sound of these washers back then stays the same in older models. The machine I told you about was my grandmothers. We used to have use the soap powder from sears. It made my load of whites whiter.

    I learned that from the UA-cam video "1959 Kenmore Eighty". My repair man (from an independent business) had previously said it was an Inglis, but as it works the same way as the mid-70's Roto-Swirl my grandma had and all the other 50's, 60's and 70's Kenmores and Whirlpools here on UA-cam, it's obvious it's actually a Whirlpool.

      same! i loved watching washing machines wash and my grandparents' whirlpool direct drive washer with a black control panel and a straight vane agitator had a stuck-closed lid switch so i could watch it wash; i would sit on the matching dryer's top to watch it

    My family had a washer and dryer similar to this one since I was a baby, and got replaced by a Maytag pair in the 2000s.
    Those machines built back then had superior quality compared to how they're made today.😀😀😀🙂🙂🙂

  • @m2esectr

    @mrbrandon71 No, it's on regular cottons. Belt-driven Kenmores, this one being one of the last, had the slowest agitation and spin speeds. Different agitators have different splash levels; this is the Dual Action whose bottom is straight vane, while the all-spiral Roto-Swirl makes much more splash.

    great action love the belt driven dual action it's so much more better then todays direct drives dual action and cleans your clothes so good. I have the same machine as you but it's about three years never and my knob is in the middle and two on the sides. I have replaced one timer and 3 belts already I purchased new it in in 1987 kenmore heavy duty plus would not change it for the world

  • @m2esectr

    Yes it does, this is indeed the type of Kenmore whose regular cycle spin is 525 rpm, at the time when Kenmore had the slowest spin on the market.

    @whirlpool1978 I agree, my mom has one washer that they make today, luckily we still have our 1979 Kenmore, it got a new motor in it and everything. Whirlpool built the older belt drive washer to last.

    i watched a video of the full cycle of a 1947 general electric washing machine, and it works quite differently from the filter flo machines that came after it
    -there is a wash timer on the left side that allows you to set how long the wash time is between 3 and 20 minutes; once it reaches the 3-minute mark it starts the main timer up
    -the machine doesn't have an on/off switch, as turning the main timer out of the off areas instantly starts the machine up
    -the machine does have a lint filter system that works kind of like some of today's machines that have them: the top of the inner tub has filters that pass under the hidden recirculation spout during agitation
    -the wash fill has water flow through a detergent dispenser on the top right
    -the agitator has holes in it that act as the water level switch: water flowing through the bottom one flows into a cup that gets heavier until it activates a switch that starts the agitation. there is another one that switches off the filling above the first one
    -at around the last minute of agitation, the recirculation spout turns off and the machine drains the outer tub to prepare for spinning, which is at a speed of 1,140 RPM, the same as the frigidare unimatic
    -during the main part of the spin cycle, the lint screens are flushed
    -the rinse water isn't drained since you can choose to save it for the next load

  • @m2esectr
    @m2esectr  15 років тому +1

    This Dual Action was designed so that the top part only follows the bottom in one direction, as the bottom does the traditional two-way agitation. The spiral on the top part is meant to facilitate turnover.

    This is when they REALLY made washers that CLEANED your clothes instead of shredding them as the ones today do.

  • @m2esectr
    @m2esectr  15 років тому

    This one originally had a properly aligned main knob, but the control wheel behind it was replaced several times. As the knob has two pieces, the bottom one slotted and the top one screw-on, this replacement led to the out-of-alignment knob you see in the video. The catalog this washer was ordered from pictured other models with the knob slightly out of alignment, but this model was pictured properly aligned as it originally was.

    Really, there were two Kenmore capacities? I didn't know that! I don't have the instruction manual any more, but I remember from it that if no drain is available you needed a tub of at least 77 litres to drain the water into.

    I haven't checked how long it takes, but it would be starting with Pre-Wash, which then goes on automatically into Cottons White (with 12-minute wash), and activating the 2nd rinse. The 2nd rinse is also 2 minutes followed by 6 minutes of spin, but no spray rinse.

    Yeah, I believe that if Tide survived, it's because it had already made its reputation as the greatest in the 1950's.

  • @m2esectr
    @m2esectr  15 років тому

    No, it has no off-balance sensor at all. You can hear a loud knocking at the start of the first spin, which is caused by an unbalanced load. The load can be even further off-balanced and the washer will still try to go on with its spin, this loud knocking keeping on and damaging the structure. When dad called the repair man about that, all he did was fill in a gap created by that knocking and advise that when it happens, we have to stop the washer and re-distribute the load.

  • @m2esectr
    @m2esectr  15 років тому

    Bilingual control panels, like the one on this washer, were only made for a few years in the 80's, as models both earlier and later were in English only. However, the operating instructions were printed under the lid in both languages for much longer than that, 70's models already having them.

    I recently tried out the longest cycle on this washer, which is starting at auto pre-wash going directly into cottons white and activating the 2nd rinse. Fill; 4 minutes pre-wash at low speed; partial drain; 90-second pause; re-fill; 14-minute wash at normal speed; 2 minutes drain; 2 minutes spin; fill; 2 minutes rinse; 2 minutes drain; 6 minutes spin; fill; 2 minutes rinse; 2 minutes drain; 6 minutes spin (no spray rinse in the last one). That whole cycle took 60 minutes.
