Not sure if this guy owns the machines, but they generally don't require much maintenance at all provided they're decent commercial ones. I worked with a family member who owns an appliance store for a few years and we dealt with a lot of property owners. Water/electricity are more expensive costs. The drums/belts, pulleys and electrical boards are built to last years if not decades on commercial machines. Most components are very sturdy.

We used to use nylons, it made the machine think it was getting quarters but you could pull them back out. It was a older machines but my mom kept the same quarters for years to do laundry.

Living in Europe I can't imagine not having a washing machine in my house. So even though some people tried with these businesses here they failed miserably. The only ones that work well are the specialty laundries that will wash your suits, dresses or stuff like curtains, carpets.
I'm from the UK and used to have a washing machine there but Laundromats are still existent there. Currently living in Portugal and I don't have a washing machine and use my buildings communal washing drying machines. Laundromat are a lot more common in Portugal

The laundromat I use to go to would constantly get broken into and vandalized. And certain machines you could just hit and they would run.
We used to use nylons, it made the machine think it was getting quarters but you could pull them back out. It was a older machines but my mom kept the same quarters for years to do laundry.
