Thank you to everyone that helped with this video, including Slandz for his expert advice on the subject and assistance with testing.

With Patch 1.13, the offhand axe continues to fill the same niche as it did before with no changes. other weapons of the small weapon class still only do 110 poise damage, axes and hammers remain breaking max poise, and they retained their true and pseudo combos.
So can you tell us how to counter this set up?
@@Tier4911 just dont be a 4head and try and mash out of hitstun. Use good roll discipline and good spacing. Its just as easy to beat as any other setup.
@Rust_BKT wow that was a super fast response thanks!
Flowerstone Gavel my beloved
I'm wondering whether I should use a heavy infused or poison infused Forked Hatchet on my strength build.
Heavy gets 520 AR and the 50 bleed while poison gets 397 AR with 96 poison and 45 bleed. Both seem like they would do fine but I'm leaning slightly more towards the poison one since the Fire Knight's GS already does so much damage with RKR as my main weapon.
What do you usually go for?
I still remember the first time I met someone good enough to punish panic rolls in DS3. I was playing against them got hit, spam rolled back, they walked a little bit forward and did an R1 and I got hit again, and then I delayed my roll and dodged their Greatsword R1s. It was the first time I became enraptured in PvP, we were in a party so I heard them say something along the lines of “So you learned on the third swing” and I responded along the lines of “That was the first time someone’s done that to me where they were patient instead of going for the second R1”. It’s a dumb story but it’s how I got into PvP.
I remember having that exact same experience lmao
mine was like this only on elden ring! i always invaded with morgotts cgs and one guy managed to dodge the ash consistently then hit me and I just had to beat him
Actually same
I experienced that in dark souls 2
i dropped pvp because of some naked guy in DS2 who totally destroyed me. Just naked guy who dodged and rolled everything i couldn't even catch him. In 20 matches i've stroke him only twice
It's crazy how we're basically transitioning into a meta that resembles Dark Souls III's PvP basic mechanics
In rulesets where theres no massive aoe L2 yes
I’m honestly surprised it didn’t happen immediately after 1.10

Handaxe became the best off-hand weapon and the fire knigh's shotsword(dagger) became one of the best main hand weapons.
What a weird times we're living on.
wait, why is that dagger so good again?
@@calibula95 Erdsteel's R2 + long
@@leoornstein3963 erdsteel iirc still better on sacred, but on dex it truly shines.
planning to try it out with rakshasa to resuscitate the good ol erdsteel offtreespear setup, see if it works like that.
@@calibula95It’s really good, similar playstyle to a curved sword but even faster. The R2 hits twice so it’s braindead easy to rollcatch people with, especially because it’s so much longer than the other daggers. If you’re fighting an opponent with a slow weapon, you can sneak R1s in between their swings and still have time to roll away. The running R2 is also a decent poke. If you stick to people like glue and pressure them it’s very difficult to deal with. The dagger moveset but with extra length is pretty scary. Damage isn’t very good, but you can sneak hits in so often that it adds up quick. An ash of war like Flame Spear or a physical infusion with Drawstring Messmerfire Grease helps a lot with the damage (you want some kind of fire-based buff to take advantage of the FKSS’s innate fire damage). Fighting opponents with high poise can be pretty tough with it though
this is like old DS3 meta

Hi again Rust! I'd like to respectfully challenge the claim of best off-hand with the Rakshasa off-hand. Hear me out. Although it has a 17f startup (4f slower than the handaxe), it has a -65% IPDM hyper armor that starts on frame 12 to 32. It also deals 137.36 poise damage @ damage lvl 2... combine that with a 27f light--attack cancel and that leaves you with a true combo L1 > R1 with any right-hand weapon that has a 15f or faster startup R1. The follow-up R1 also gains the leftover hyper armor frames from the Rakshasa for the first 5 frames of start-up too. The Rakshasa is the only off-hand weapon that gives 1.) hyper armor 2). damage level 2 and 3.) 15f cancel window.
This leads to many ways to abuse this disgusting priority skipping with many different weapons as long as you start with a L1 first. I've tested most, and my favorite weapon setup currently is the... Great Omenkiller Cleaver greataxe mainhand with the Rakshasa off-hand. This gives a L1 > R1 true combo vs anyone w/o hyper armor and the R1 is damage level 2 as well, which provides 10 more frames of hitstun advantage to reset neutral or lead into a mixup. The Omenkiller also has great range, great damage, 50 internal bleed, can be infused, and deals 228.94 poise damage on it's R1. This combo can feel absolutely overwhelming to play against because this setup almost always has priority.
My setup might be jogging your memory to three nights ago where you fought me twice in a row with this exact setup. You commented that my weapon setup seemed a bit odd. I was starting with this setup w/ blink and hard-swapping with the other two blink somber axes to mixup... oh, and last week I was the Sword of Night + Giant Arc guy. There's a lot more to this setup, but don't want to bore you here. Just wanted to share my insight, and I might make a video with more details later.
Both are great, but they are very different tools. I like them alot
www.twitch.tv/videos/2203183339?t=2h49m25s Found my two duels in your Twitch VOD using this setup, yay! You seemed a bit thrown off about me abusing the hyper armor from the Rakshasa to the Omenkiller. GG's though! :D
I mean yeah it's bugged like the old offlance but the handaxe is literally accessible to all builds, the raksasha is a Dex thing
@@leonardo9259 idk if its bugged, it might just be a feature of how the weapon was designed, since its given hyperarmro within the context of its text as well. so who knows
15 frame? holdup, i thought the rakshasa getting a slower recovery compared to the other great katanas meant it could true combo only with daggers and at best ona late hit, hand axe
edit: oh... oh fuck i just checked
light attack cancel is for right hand not for left...
holy shit rakshasa just became my favorite offhand this instant, might as well be better than pre-dlc offhand treespear.
A lot of these are core fighting game fundamentals as well. Some people will always mash out of frame disadvantage no matter how much you punish it.
I love this comment. Some people who don’t know fighting games might also enjoy the interaction between grabs and mashing opponents. You just need a bit of timing.
Me a pure caster observing the machinations of strength and dex users. Interesting very interesting.
😂
Hand axe has nearly the exact same moveset as the untricked saw spear/saw cleaver, which are the strongest weapons in Bloodborne PvP bar none. It also plays the exact same way, stuffing attacks and regaining frame advantage.
Yo great call out, i didnt even think about that 🤘

From what I can tell, the forked hatchet and the icerind hatchet have the same moveset and will also work(I haven't tested mind you). Which is nice for the arcane builds I guess, since the forked hatchet has innate bleed.

If you run quality, or a dex build, ice-rind hatchet might be a bit better than hand axe.
Same moveset
Slightly longer
More damage
Frostbite buildup
Lower weight by 0.5
Is cooler (heh)
Better physical AR (if dex or quality build)
It also pairs nicely with a frost-infused banished knight halberd, and hoarfrost stomp on the axe is a decent zoning tool for mid-ranged trades.
why would someone use quality build over bleed?
@lukaogadze5071 I wouldn't if I was trying to win a tourney, but quality builds have great weapon versatility if you like hardswapping. Then again, so do most 2-stat pairings.

I came hero to say Void cut is and underrated AOW, and for some reason it works very well to punish if someone wants to heal, it has good poise and good damage and I don't know why no one uses it, you would have to poor it to give it the recognition it deserves (that is if you usually have to predict what your rival is going to use it)
Love the editing! Fantastic video.
I’m actually more confused than ever but that’s because of my lifestyle choices. Great vid!
You did awesome, Rust! This video was really well-made, thank you!
I dunno why, but its always really funny to me when you talk about using hyper armor being brainless because I know exactly what you’re talking about, but one of my favorite way to play is calculating my poise and weight out to trade fully charged heavies on things like greataxes or the zweihander/meteoric ore blade. Like, I barely use the weapon art on the meteor sword. I find timing my heavies that much more satisfying just because so many people either think they can stun me before I hit or refuse to play like a ‘bitch’. Like to me, the spacing and mind games are so much more fun. Could I just mash? Sure, but why mash with my hyper armor when varying my spacing, my timing, and my hyper armor through charge attacks is so much more fun. I honestly think charge attacks getting more hyper armor is one of the best mechanics they’ve made. From just… should probably rely on that more than passive poise in the future.
sounds like you would like monster hunter xD
i dig it, everyone has their own playstyle, and it sounds like youve found one that works for you
@@Rust_BKT yeah. it’s really funny as I remember lamenting the lack of passive poise in DS3, but in hindsight, the idea of only certain attacks benefitting from the poise stat or the idea some weapon arts reseting poise… in elden ring there’s more than one occassion I find myself missing how DS3 handled it-namely DS3 has a less is more approach making its hyper armor and poise feel better. I also kinda find it a shame that guard counters and charge attacks just ended up so overshadowed by elden rings ash of war system, because honestly, I find those far more interesting in how they can theoretically add to and mix up the fundamentals of any games From makes going forward PvE or PvP. Like… its not exactly PvP, but as an example… fighting PvE bosses with charge attacks and guard counters changes the rhythms of the bosses by a large amount with how much more stagger damage they do. That same fundamental difference in mechanics allows me to literally alter battle flow in a PvP fight by just having the ability to suddenly stop, wind up, and throw out a charge attack. It can mess with the opponents rhythm and force a reset. It can also get me punished horribly, but eh, that’s the fun of it being a mind game and a gamble.
Bro makes more videos 😭 you and steel and sometimes G9 are like the only good PvP UA-camrs in my opinion besides chase and lost here and there, I feel like I can get better by watching these and I learn some true combos every now and then (if I really want to learn combos I’ll just watch giggas thicas)

It's beatiful to see you using this kinda of weapons. Can you answer this question -> Is it possible to use colossal weapons like Ghiza's Wheel or Duelist Greataxes in optmized way at SL 125?
I dont know how to use them properly, then I start to play passively on arena... that results on my meta-slave oponent picking chainsaw glitch and finishing me off.
idk what all of you are doing that keeps getting you chainsawed lmao. but colossal weapons just kinda suck. super easy to strafe, very reactable, ect, ect. but having a offhand weapon like the handaxe or a dagger to keep people from being able to play super reactionary to your extremely slow attacks is the way to go
Duelist greatax Is bad but Ghiza's Wheel is 1 of the best colossals u can use, but only in 1handed because better moveset n the colossals needs a good offhand like handax, shamshir, kibas, dagger or the new Backhand blades (only if u wanna try new things) n try to get every offhand with bleed like wakizashi. Hope this helps u
@@Rust_BKT It happened 3 times, the other guy hard-swaped weapon, changed rings, all competitive things, But when I figure out that will be impossible to win with my Ghiza's, I start playing passively, running around throwing consumables, looking to draw the match. But I got wrecked by chainsaw anyways.
When playing with shitty weapons, when being outplayed at every single aspect, a tie sounds like an awesome win 😁.

hey man, quick question: does the handaxe follow-up l1 succeed only after a "poke" halberd r1 (banished knight, dragon halberd, ecc) or it works also with "chop" halberds like the black knight one? are there other weapon types that enable the followup aside those you have showcased in the video?
14 to 13 frames is a crazy buff even if ppls don't think that, 13 frames is on the verge of unreactable, as fast as old shunter and psgs cr1, and arena noobs probably can't react to it. Its not much on paper but it really does make a difference if you want to have a chance against a good player focusing on reaction-rolling qnd player passive

The one weapon I was very surprised to seem performing really well in pvp is the black knight twinblade. That extra face scaling with lighting incantation hits like a truck, I quite literally did 1203 damage on with the running R2.
5:01 i just like to point out that this technique does not work on higher latencies, especially something along the lines of 250ms and above, you are more than likely gonna hit by phantom range due to the delay in each other's actions.

spamming r1
people just be hittin buttons fr, r1, l2, whatever. just cueing an attack while theyre actively in stun frames is all it means

That night was the night my left hand married the handaxe in a perpetually bloody, violent, and toxic relationship.
Okay please help me understand. I'm fairly new to Elden Ring PvP (or souls PvP as a whole) but what alternatives are there to rolling out of hitstun? Often times I do not want to roll for various reasons. For example, rolling means displacement. Often times I want to stay in range or hold the positions where I'm at or other times I want to save the roll for another deadly attack (especially in invasions where you need to fight multiple people). Can I do backstepping or blocking for example or is that considered bad too?
