I mean... in all fairness the game only has 2 normal attack buttons, and 4 if you're using offensive AoW and powerstancing. So hey, that's 50% of your attack buttons utilized!
Finding setups like these was literally my specialty back in ds3 lol, I love the way that elden ring let us use weapon skills with an offhand weapon instead of just blocking with it for whatever reason. One offhand weapon I think is super underrated is the offhand straight sword, it's decently fast and it covers strafes/jumps well if you know how to freeaim it. I find it pairs well with a mainhand spear because the spear has good running, jumping, and rolling attacks while the straight sword prevents them from freely aggressing and strafing around my attacks. I use this setup on a faith/int build with a 50/34 split respectively which gives good damage on a flame art clayman harpoon. I hope the dlc gives us more unique r1 movesets so we can have some new and potentially flashy options

Forgot to mention, offhand katana with iron cleaver axe main hand is pretty hilarious. Once people get caught in vortex and start to panic roll away, you can chase down with the charge r2 with iron cleaver and continue to vortex them
The mashing out of hitstun drives me insane. It makes me feel like they literally put bots in the game. Worst part is, I never get used to it. So many older games have taught me that you never swing out of hitstun.
it's really fascinating seeing how different 1v1 arena fights are to invasions. Truly feel like 2 different games. The skills required are mostly different.

I'm more of a casual player who likes to be informed of what makes a good setup, so I'm not so gung-ho about deleting all poise and hyper armor from the game (some AoW could definitely have their HA delayed a few frames tho). Still, I appreciate these videos, since they usually contain good advice on fun things to try and what to look out for!

Some get really jaded and mean, because yeah when you do nothing but play flawed PvP 24/7 you kinda become a dick. You have the balance that Scott Jund used to have! I have been impressed recently though - Fromsoft did make a lot of changes that the community asked for! I don't know if they care, but they have definitely made some good efforts! The game is in a much better place now than it was at launch, and I might argue a lot more fun than I ever had with DS3!
Life is rough for me in the arena, as a Twinblade and Scythe main with either offhand magic or offhand daggers to punish the reaction monsters. But when certain ashes of war like Blood Blade or Ice Spear hit, dealing fuckton of damage on even the most high defense people, it's one of the best feelings in the world.
Great hammer with off hand whip is actually amazing. Great hammer locks down close combat and when they try to roll out of range the off hand whip attack comes out slightly delayed so it can roll catch perfectly

Something only slightly unrelated is technically setup parries from hitstun have never been more practical. I run like 40 poise because heavy armor is ugly as shit, but swag comes with the downside of meta players freely monkey mashing out of most things i do. HOWEVER my low poise also serves as tantalizing bait, because even scimitar and rapier parries are very easy to land when set up with rolling or hitstun, assuming lag isnt present. I would definitely try out 2h cs and 2h ts with parry and see how it feels, even if you dont parry, both setups have crazy good backswings and can reliable rollcatch someone who opts to roll rather than attack. And in this sense, intentionally lower poise is quite nice because even if your opponent knows that you have parry, sometimes their inner monke cant resist r1 trading anyway.
Ye, parrying the monke mash is pretty consistent, since putting them in hitstun allows you to setup the parry without needing to factor latency. Just use the same timing every time. But the aggressive option of the offhand weapon just covers a few extra bases with less of a reward than a riposte, but it prevents the jump sttack out of hitstun,l2s, and atleast forces a roll. Purrying is def a good option if you have a very unga bunga opponent thho

I uhhhh.. I just ungabunga warcry pickaxe r2 trade. Turns out its very off-meta to do 4-5 R2 swings as bait then catch them with the 6th for 80-100% of their health bar.
reminds me of good ol' DS3 times, when I created my fume knight cosplay and then realized, that combining the HUGE fume ultra great sword with a straight sword is incredibly powerful and very hard for enemies to deal with in PvP. Hyper armor from the FUGS + range + insane DMG would let me win hit trades, the counter to ultras is to get close and weave attacks after a missed swing, now comes the straight sword in play. Still takes some skill to read enemies and switch up your aggression and move habits, so enemies can't predict you, though. :)

the easiest solution ive found for brainless endure-double-straight-sword-monkey-mashing is parrying actually, its very consistent for me to parry right as the endure animation ends for a succesful parry
Rapier left hand and great club (big bonk or something similar)in your right hand. Rapier has enough speed and poise to counter any start of an attack, this is going to be its role. Big Bonk is there to punish and deal poise damage. One handed club has more of a horizontal swing, which is very good for roll catch. Barbaric roar as ash of war, can be used to interrupt opponents attacks, and follow up with buffed weapon. At low level, 20 to 30ish, rapier+club is just toxic and leaves no openings. You can literally stand in one place and counter/punish any attack. Alternatively you can go light roll with no poise but I advise wearable Ng the lightest armour possible.
I almost included offzwei for this actually, had some great clips for it too, but i ended up writing it out, for the sake of brevity. Its a great option tho
When i do arena and people are mashing out of hit stun i thank the gods. Because for me its so much worse if they do the double roll back, if i even flinch. I dont want to chase them all game.

I don't duel too much but in invasions I like to have raptor Talons in the offhand to softswap to endure and escape blenders. That's led me to use them as an offhand tool with halberds, the nagakiba, and the urumi, and it's very effective against players without a lot of hyper armor (and since both it and the kiba have innate bleed you can win trades against hyper armor weapons as well as long a you roll out before taking more than one hit and then pressure again immediately: works great against OLPs who dont take much damage outside of a bleed proc
I run Braggart's Roar on the Greataxe with the Roar Medallion and a Highland Axe on my hip. If they go for an attack out of hitstun, they end up taking 1k+ damage from the trade against a non-charged R2.
Ive found wild strikes has good hyper armour and can trade into anyone spamming r1 apart from collosals, put it on an occult flamberge and have traded into rivers spam and come out on top consistently just wailing on them aslong as i dont get bled out 😅
So, what I'm getting from this is that a mainhand Fist (with Endure) with an offhand CGS would be a good setup? If you connect a hit with the CGS, then you can true combo into the Fist, or alternatively if you land a hit with the Fist, then you can freely swing with the CGS (unless they have a parry weapon out) and force rolls. You can also two-hand the CGS to activate your own Hyper Armor, or Endure on some paired Fists to trade with just about anything. I think a good candidate for the Fists would be the Katar, since it _does_ have increased range over other fists while still being infusable, does piercing damage, and has a 3 hit true combo out of the paired running heavy into an unpaired standing heavy. And of course, the best CGS for most builds would be the Dismounter like you said in your CGS video.
I dont think off cgs true combos in to mainhand fist but i could be wrong? I havent checked. But put endure on anything and it will be good, just because endure is stupid. You wouldnt keep prio on an r1 from fist into cgs, it would trade, so probably wouldnt be as useful as mainhand cgs with off fist
I did a main hand Great Stars and offhand Mogh spear set up on my bleed Str build. It could get real repressive against the more mindless mashers, but only slightly tricky against actual good players. You still have to get good with these set ups. It’s really fun tho just cuz it looks so badass.
I’m just procrastinating and potting off that death poker bird . He’s waiting for me in the swaps. I killed 2 all ready but the Death bird in the snow hills by the walking mausoleum that throws magic snow balls gave me hell.
I ran into someone while I was invading that was using a blood colossal sword with offhand nagi. The nagi combos from the colossal light and they tried to roll catch with giant hunt but it was too slow to punish a panic roll. Seeing that it nearly bled me from just the light into the offhand nagi I decided to try it for myself and found that the light attack of the colossal into the nagi and then crouch poking the panic roll consistently bled. Wasn't sure what ashes of war to use, but found this little combo disgusting as is.
So assuming they never fix offhand great spear, there will never be a reason to use collosal greatsword 1 handed. That said i really like zweihander 1 handed with offhand dagger/fist. It adds mixups to a game that is mostly just putting yourself in a certain position and using the 1 option that works over and over.
Smashing out of hitstun... it's probably one of my least favourite parts about elden rong pvp, it creates you a bad habit that can be dangerous depending the situation... The ammount of times i fought hosts with low hp left and instead of rolling away and try to heal they decide to keep attacking, even if my weapon has priority. But i'm start to accepting it as part of the game, and i doubt it will ever change.
cool video, I would like to share a good build, moon veil and straight sword in offhend, alternating attacks of the sword and katana allows you to maintain priority, the problem with the long offhand has been solved, you can blend the ashes of war, also the light version of the ashes of war has a true combo in the ss
I'm guilty of enduring in my opponent's face with fist weapons, and it's just too effective. I never start invasions with fist weapons, but usually end them with them.
I hate meta mashing so much. Im not a duelist or tournament player, but sometimes when Im doing PVP, I struggle with meta set-ups, so hopefully I can swap to these set-ups and smash the sweaty tryhards.
How does something fast like catch flame compare to other offhand options? Feels like catch flame + a thrusting weapon like a halberd or spear would be pretty good.
Your video was very informative and I've loved it. But my opinion on it involved moments where the quality/resolution of the recorded gameplay went down so often that no matter how high I increased UA-cam's frame rates and resolution, it still was there. Can you possibly get a better capture card or try to do it as little as possible. If you can't then I understand.

Offhand axe is pretty strong, with a main hand halbred. Always poise breaks even if your opponent is running 109 poise.

My strategy for someone with endure is run away when I see the animation and then try to hit them right at the end of the 3 second mark.

Also hard counterers stormcaller, waterfowl dance and bloodblade dance if you can predict and trade into them
One think that always worked for me on duels is the ol’ Cragblade Offhand Estoc, its nice

I did a main hand Great Stars and offhand Mogh spear set up on my bleed Str build.
It could get real repressive against the more mindless mashers, but only slightly tricky against actual good players.
You still have to get good with these set ups. It’s really fun tho just cuz it looks so badass.
yea the slow mainhand makes it struggle. it would have been much better pre-1.10, but you just cant outpace small,fast weapons :(

I ran into someone while I was invading that was using a blood colossal sword with offhand nagi. The nagi combos from the colossal light and they tried to roll catch with giant hunt but it was too slow to punish a panic roll. Seeing that it nearly bled me from just the light into the offhand nagi I decided to try it for myself and found that the light attack of the colossal into the nagi and then crouch poking the panic roll consistently bled. Wasn't sure what ashes of war to use, but found this little combo disgusting as is.

No, actually
So assuming they never fix offhand great spear, there will never be a reason to use collosal greatsword 1 handed. That said i really like zweihander 1 handed with offhand dagger/fist. It adds mixups to a game that is mostly just putting yourself in a certain position and using the 1 option that works over and over.
Offhand Hand Axe is a pretty oppressive offhand option too
Every pvp content creator cried in favor of ds3 pvp and now you got that
PS. Spiked Caestus has the same range and poise dmg, but lighter weight.

Smashing out of hitstun... it's probably one of my least favourite parts about elden rong pvp, it creates you a bad habit that can be dangerous depending the situation...
The ammount of times i fought hosts with low hp left and instead of rolling away and try to heal they decide to keep attacking, even if my weapon has priority.
But i'm start to accepting it as part of the game, and i doubt it will ever change.

cool video, I would like to share a good build, moon veil and straight sword in offhend, alternating attacks of the sword and katana allows you to maintain priority, the problem with the long offhand has been solved, you can blend the ashes of war, also the light version of the ashes of war has a true combo in the ss
moonveil aow is a true combo into r1 as well, dont need the offsword for that

I'm guilty of enduring in my opponent's face with fist weapons, and it's just too effective. I never start invasions with fist weapons, but usually end them with them.

Yo I used to offhand butchering Knife for roll catches , I spent a while getting curbstomped before I got the hang of it

I hate meta mashing so much. Im not a duelist or tournament player, but sometimes when Im doing PVP, I struggle with meta set-ups, so hopefully I can swap to these set-ups and smash the sweaty tryhards.

How does something fast like catch flame compare to other offhand options? Feels like catch flame + a thrusting weapon like a halberd or spear would be pretty good.

Your video was very informative and I've loved it. But my opinion on it involved moments where the quality/resolution of the recorded gameplay went down so often that no matter how high I increased UA-cam's frame rates and resolution, it still was there. Can you possibly get a better capture card or try to do it as little as possible. If you can't then I understand.
i play on a laptop, really nothing i can do about it unless i put in for a PC
