My Dad loved this song and it was played at his funeral service as the last song. And it still manages to make me smile, even though I thought it'd hurt to listen to it afterwards. It's a great song and my Dad had great taste in music.
I remember me and my husband would always dance to this song every night when we would go to a bar. 3 years ago he past away with cancer, and everytime I hear this song I just want to remember him with me all the time. I miss him so much

I worked on this video. It was a mad shoot. We had to clear out an entire house in New Cross. It was about an 18 hour day if I remember. The video still looks great to this day. I remember the director loved those fairy lights and put them all over the place. I spent a lot of the time encouraging people to dance on the top floor to keep the vibe going :) Those were the days, hanging out with fashion models and going to wild parties - another lifetime :) This is the first time I have actually watched the whole video! I worked on so many back in the day but I remember this one.

It was so beautiful and for once in awhile, I felt like there’s nothing to worry about and I wanted to remember this moment as long as I can.
This is exactly why it was written in the first place, in fact it's quite a sad story. Writer of the original, Sherman Kelly says; "On a trip to St. Croix in 1969, I was the first victim of a vicious gang who eventually murdered 8 American tourists. At that time, I suffered multiple facial fractures and wounds and was left for dead. While I was recovering, I wrote "Dancin In The Moonlight" in which I envisioned an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyful celebration of life."

Yeah, then it ends and your problems continue. Sounds like alcoholics. Drink to forget, but as soon as you sober up, the problems are still there, so they constantly drink to be away rather than solving the problem to begin with.
Its not about dancing in the moonlight, its about dancing in the moonlight by having good time with family and friends. And also that song gives you nostalgia about your late parents that you're not forgotten.
This song hits hard, I used to listen it with some friends in high school on our way to revise for exams at the library, then one of them died unexpectedly the year after I left. I listened to this on repeat the week of my friends funeral. She would have been in her 30s now, she was only 16. Be grateful for every day x
So I used to work in this italian restaurant in Clapham Common, in London. I'm italian myself, and I wanted to work abroad for a while. I packed my things and left. The restaurant was busy and had this repeating playlist that basically shuffled 30 songs over and over. This was the BEST tune we had, I remember being so happy serving the customers with this music, it brings me happiness just to think about it again. Music is truly a great thing
Fellow italian here! Ahaha And this happens to me too! I work in a bar (in Italy) and the boss always plays some kind of UA-cam playlist, but when the good song finally comes around you'll see me truly smiling, not just smiling to be nice with the costumers 😅 and I'll try to move and do everything following the rhythm ahah
It's so amazing that such a traumatic event inspired such a beautiful song. Life's all about perspective I guess and you can literally make the best out of your worst moments too.
It was the last song of the night, just my dad’s band and close friends and family left. Wonderful way to end the most important day of my life, unforgettable! ❤️
This song reminds me of the feeling after a feel-good movie, when the credits start rolling up and you just sit there with the feeling that life is good and that everything will just turn out okay. I don't know how to describe that feeling of bliss, but this song is that explanation. I cannot express how much I love this song.
I'm 64 and due to my neuro issues I didn't recognize it at first as a song of my teen years. Although we'll always love the original version, this band sang it with a slower pace and I love it as we can enjoy the amazing vibes much better!
This song has a certain vibe. You could play it at an old folks home during puzzle hour and at a dingy club at 0200 in the morning and it would be loved by all who heard it.
I bet many here have no idea that this is a remake...crazy that when u put this title in UA-cam search it should always have the original as the very first choice to oick.
@@ossyable I completely agree about King Harvest - I think this Toploader version is missing the chorus harmonies (also enjoy the Orleans version - I think the bass player is from King Harvest).
Sherman Kelly released this, july 9, 1972 after the tragic events. Kelly and his girlfriend were jumped by a gang while they were trying to spend the night on a beach together. They were both severely beaten. Sherman Kelly is still alive as of this writing, 80 years old🫡 For those who don't know💛
"Dancing in the Moonlight" is a song originally recorded by the French-American rock group King Harvest. The song was written by Sherman Kelly, produced by Jack Robinson, originally recorded in 1970 by Kelly's band Boffalongo, and then released as a single by King Harvest in 1972, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2000 a cover by English band Toploader became a worldwide hit and achieved multi-Platinum status in the United Kingdom.
Yeah. You can blame today’s music, often played more than these underrated songs. Btw, According to the original song, it was made for more than 10 years.
Just back from seeing you guys in Glasgow supporting Paul Heaton (01/12/2024). Thank you for putting on such a fantastic show. This was definitely a two for one deal. Hearing Valerie live goes straight into my live music highlights.
I swear this song helps you get through your day, if you are having a bad day listen to this and it changes you entire mood and energy towards the day. This song hits different😁
In this absurdly hot Italian summer night, I'm listening to this song, chills running through my body, bawling my eyes out because of this song and what it reminds me. When I was a kid, 10 years ago there was a tv ad about an Italian drink called estathè and this song played in the background. Everytime i watched it on tv I used to feel incredibly happy to be alive. It was about the first experiences of a lifetime and pictured the perfect Italian summer with you know vespa, friends, parties at the beach at night and so on. I don't know, it just felt the best time of one's life, it struck me deeply at the point that even today 10 years passed and when I hear this song i immediately remember those times, when being a kid with no trouble, no anxiety and when I lived those awesome moments. This song is so nostalgic that it actually hurts. Too many memories. It's so meaningful and will be my all time favorite summer song for the rest of my life.
I know right! It makes me so sad and teary eyed because I remember all the fun memories when I was younger with this song I made fun videos and everything!
Hi there, smiling person! If you read this, then i hope you have a GREAT day! And don't worry 'bout what other people think about you, just be yourself! If everything looks dark, just remember that somewhere, there'll be light! I just had one of these dark times, but then everything got turned upside down, now, instead of bad things, good things keep on happening for me! This song helped me ALOT getting happier! So, again, have a lovley day, friend! :3
This song gives off the best vibes I have ever received from music. It’s just so happy. It’s something you play to drown out your problems, and drink a beer with peace of mind. Absolutely beautiful

What a GREAT wonderful tune! It’s hard to believe the original came out fifty one years ago. It’s Dec. 2023 today and I may be old, but this song always makes me smile, groove, and feel young!
the body may be getting older. but that heart of yours is still as full of passion and care as it always has been! make sure that flame never dies will ya?
When this song came out I was partying and getting high in college and starting a family wasn’t even an option in my mind, now I’m listening to this on AirPods with my wife and son sleeping next to me, shits cray

I've always said as a 90s guy that music started to decline after 2001, but this album makes me reconsider. Certainly, part of it is that some of it was created in the 90s and also, a lot of it is from the UK, a place that still managed to maintain some semblance of creativity and originality musically in the 2000s.
I suffer from depression due to my PTSD. But, this song just makes me forget and smile. It hits a sad happy spot in my soul. And makes me smile and forget.👍
Back during my first love, this was 'our song.' The original, anyway. That was 14 years ago. The song always hurt to listen to, even long after it felt like my heart healed. Hearing this version, it doesn't hurt anymore. It's just happy.
@xXErnestoZedillo1994Xx " Sherman Kelly and some friends were running a nightclub in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, in 1969. One day, they decided to rent a 65-foot yacht and travel to St. Croix for the day. Unbeknownst to him at the time, Kelly was prone to seasickness, and he and his girlfriend got really seasick on the crossing. When the group arrived in St. Croix, those onboard took a dingy to shore to look for some dinner. But Kelly and his girlfriend were both still sick and weren’t interested in eating at that point. The group got its food and decided to head back to the boat to spend the night. Kelly and his girlfriend looked out into the harbor and saw the boat’s mast swaying back and forth, and instead opted to stay in town overnight rather than risk more seasickness on the boat. There was only one problem: Due to his extreme seasickness and disorientation, Kelly had left his wallet on the boat and had no money or credit cards for a hotel. The two went to a small inn, explained the situation to the innkeeper and offered to settle up in the morning when Kelly could return to the boat to retrieve his wallet. “And he said, ‘Sure, you can stay here if your girlfriend will sleep with me,’” said Kelly in a telephone interview from his home in the Finger Lakes region of New York. After being turned down at a second inn, Kelly’s girlfriend said, “It’s a beautiful night. Why don’t we just stretch out on the beach?” “So we did,” said Kelly. “And that’s all I remember very clearly.” What happened after that was pieced together through bits of Kelly’s own memory and the recollections of other people. According to those accounts, while sleeping on the beach, Kelly and his girlfriend were the victims of a vicious St. Croix street gang. Kelly was severely beaten by five gang members wielding baseball bats. His girlfriend was raped by the gang leader and the rest were in line. But Kelly’s girlfriend later reported, that Kelly regained consciousness during the attack and fought back, making enough noise to scare off the attackers. With Kelly drifting in and out of consciousness, the two managed to follow the lights along the shore, eventually making their way to the only St. Croix hospital. Kelly and his girlfriend were thought to be among the first victims of the notorious Fountain Valley Gang, who in 1972 murdered eight tourists and wounded eight more thereby devastating St. Croix tourism for many years. “I woke up to the sound of my hospital roommate screaming in pain. Finally the screaming stopped and I heard two doctors talking about him. ‘That’s it, he’s gone,’ said one doctor about the other patient. ‘What about him, you think he’s gonna make it?’ And the other doctor said, ‘No, I doubt it.” I realized they were talking about me,” said Kelly. Kelly did make it, though. He spent several days in the St. Croix hospital, eventually returning to St. Thomas, where he stayed at a friend’s house while he recovered. Eventually he was healthy enough to get back to New York, where doctors at New York Hospital were able to re-break and re-set the bones in his face and address his other injuries. Returning to his home in Ithaca, New York, still in pain and with constant headaches, Kelly was in no shape to be in a band. But that didn’t prevent him from writing songs. And it was during this period of convalescence that he began to write some verses for a song, verses that would later become the lyrics for “Dancing in the Moonlight.” “I envisioned an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyous celebration of life. It was just me imagining a better world than the one I had just experienced in St. Croix,” said Kelly. An unspeakably traumatic experience that almost cost him his life had turned into a beautiful song. “It was amazing. People liked the song right from the start. I liked it, but I wouldn’t have predicted that it would become a big hit,” said Kelly. "
@@martyflipman4737 alr, but you just could simply said that he based the song on his memories while in the hospital because of the attacks at st. Croix.
I don't know what the reason is but everytime I hear this song, it hits a certain spot in my heart and it makes me almost cry. beautiful song as always 🥰
Due to my ageing memory, I didn't recognize it at first as one of the amazing songs of my teen years in the 70s but rewatching the original version, I realized this band performed it in a slower pace which I liked even more though the vibes of the 70's are obviously irreplaceble and the bitter-sweet memories of an era long gone too precious.
Mohammed TheMapler I think that this is the first song i ever remember hearing on the radio in the UK. I was being dropped off to school in the car by my mother! I was about 7!! :D
@@MarkFonts If you could elaborate just how this cover doesn't convey what the original song does, if not doing it better, I'm sure everybody here would love to hear it, because you're clearly wrong.
@@JonnyBoyOfficial i missed your eloquent opinion besides “nah it isn’t.” This cover is paint by numbers “make a caucasian hit” by taking something original or groundbreaking from Black culture, e.g., rock & roll/the beatles, the r&b/hiphop into pop of the 90s, and all of jazz, and removing everything of its cultural import until it is en-blanded for the mainstream to somehow find success because record companies promote white artists far more. can you identify anything significant this cover did to transform this song other than apply the top pop 100’s styling? every part is worse, stolen, and much more inauthentic.

This song hits hard, I used to listen it with some friends in high school on our way to revise for exams at the library, then one of them died unexpectedly the year after I left. I listened to this on repeat the week of my friends funeral. She would have been in her 30s now, she was only 16.
Be grateful for every day x

life’s a crazy phenomenon, I don’t think we’d ever be capable of truly understanding it’s greatness🌅 rip🫶🏼
Are u italian?
😍😍
Fellow italian here! Ahaha
And this happens to me too! I work in a bar (in Italy) and the boss always plays some kind of UA-cam playlist, but when the good song finally comes around you'll see me truly smiling, not just smiling to be nice with the costumers 😅 and I'll try to move and do everything following the rhythm ahah

I don’t have a sad story to share for this song, I just really like it.
Me as well.
If you want a sad story, look up what the original song was written about. It's awful.
@@martyflipman4737 what was written about?
Why don’t we just stretch out on the beach?”
“So we did,” said Kelly. “And that’s all I remember very clearly.”
What happened after that was pieced together through bits of Kelly’s own memory and the recollections of other people.
And it was during this period of convalescence that he began to write some verses for a song, verses that would later become the lyrics for “Dancing in the Moonlight.”
“I envisioned an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyous celebration of life.
Thats what good music does....heals the heart, and reassures the soul that not all is bad in the world. 🎶

@@JonnyBoyOfficial i missed your eloquent opinion besides “nah it isn’t.”
This cover is paint by numbers “make a caucasian hit” by taking something original or groundbreaking from Black culture, e.g., rock & roll/the beatles, the r&b/hiphop into pop of the 90s, and all of jazz, and removing everything of its cultural import until it is en-blanded for the mainstream to somehow find success because record companies promote white artists far more.
can you identify anything significant this cover did to transform this song other than apply the top pop 100’s styling? every part is worse, stolen, and much more inauthentic.
