Norm Stockton, solo artist and bassist for Lincoln Brewster, demonstrates a Gallien-Krueger bass rig and explains why he's a strong supporter of the brand.
As opposed to being an in-depth demo for this specific rig, Norm demonstrates some of his personal playing techniques and explains why GK amps and cabinets are right for him. Thanks for visiting and sharing your talent Norm!
when ever I see a band - It's finger style and pick. God knows why all demos are slapping
Probably because they want you to hear all the over tones and sounds.
This is a perfect demo, don't undertand why everyone is complaining. When I'm looking at buying gear based on video reviews, I like to hear a variety of styles from it, and this covered just about everything.
Every freakin demo has some guy slappin and poppin on these dam amps. i need to hear WTF they sound like when their rode hard and put away wet. Drive the dam thing.
Right!!! I don’t have shit with people playing metal or punk or anything heavy that pushes the cabinet or amp
I have the same complaint. Hate the sound of slapping. I want to hear the damn thing.
Yes, I understand that. I was talking about amp output level, not pre-amp gain. Two separate controls. But some will attempt to drive a large cab with an underpowered amp in order to fit a low volume venue. So, maybe able to use higher gain but the lack of overall power will still affect the tone by not pushing the speaker enough. The point is to have both amp and cab be able to run at optimum levels for a given venue.
At 2:00 he describes the rig that caught his attention at the NAMM GK booth. It's the rig he still uses and the one in the vid. 1001RB head, Neo 212 cab and Neo 115 cab.
I hear what you're saying. As the input level and output level are controlled individually on the 1001, I assumed that you would be able to drive the input gain while still holding the overall output at a reasonable level.
Love your playing!
nice playing... but i was looking for the amp demonstration
If you're looking for a little more low end, consider a 2x12. The GK NEO 212 (like Norm's above) can be ordered in either 4ohm or 8ohm impedence. A lot of players are also using a pair of 1x12's with amps in the 300w range. Tote your amp and axe to some shops and try it through different cabs and see what floats your boat.
Two cabs rated at 4ohms each will produce a 2ohm load. If the minimum ohm rating for your amp is 4ohms, you will not be able to use those to cabs together. You could use two cabs if they are both rated at 8ohms. Two 8ohm cabs create a 4ohm load, which would work perfectly.
I've heard people say the 700RB has a generally slightly warmer sound. There is a VERY good chance this is only because it gets the trademark GK "growl" or "grind" at a lower, more practical volume
Great demo Norm. The variety of techniques really showed off the tone - finger pick, hammer ons, slap and pop, lows and highs, chords - pretty much covered it all (except for thrash metal LOL). Also answered my question of whether or not you use the 2x12 together with the 1x15. GK site shows both as equipment you use but didn't know if you used them separetly for different applications or together as one rig.
P.S. If the jacks on your cab aren't specifically labeled "in" for one and "out" for the other, they are probably wired in parallel. Therefore, daisy chaining another cab to it would lower the impedence load just as if you had plugged both directly into the amp. So, yeah... do some shopping.
Have you seen Norm play with Lincoln Brewster? He does the pocket perfectly, as well as being able to do this crazy technical end of it.
Does anybody here play metal? How do GK's sound with a 5 string and low tuning?
they sound great with the built in eq u can really get a good low yet punchy tone it’s probably better masia boogie amps and those things r built for metal
Sounds fantastic, even with extreme lower tunings
Looking at an amp reveiw and came across some sweet bass playing too! awesome!
Checking in late (sorry!) & sorry not as much groove stuff in this demo (it was 1st take & not really thought out). More groove in upcoming GK demos for MB stuff. Blessings- Norm
P.S. To learn both groove & pyrotechnics, please visit me at my instructional site, ArtOfGroove.
great opening and ending minutes! would've loved to hear more growl. i'll check the full review.
As long as you turn off the limiter at lower volume levels, you will get the same tonal definition as at high volumes provided you pair it with the right cab. It's not a tube amp and so is not subject to having to be driven in order to produce tone as long as you're playing through an approprietly sized cab for the venue. What could decrease your tone at low volumes with any amp is if you're playing through too big of a cab. If the speakers aren't being driven enough, you won't get any tone.
Just bought the head and it is awesome. I was messing with the settings for two days and decided to try yours. Really ,great sound. Was this trial and error setting this or did the GK rep help u out? Anyways ,I own two custom built cabs and am playing it through a Emperor 1x15 & 2x10 .So thanks for the video and thats some nice playing. I even tried it on the 8x10 ,even better. These cabs use Eminence speakers which have a nice low end sound for 10s thanks
I like the way Norm explains things. And he makes me laugh. There is a video for one of the G-K heads and he stops in the middle because it's raining outside in Southern California.
Ahhh ... I see the "scrunchie mute device!"
Hope ya had a great summer Norm!
Carl
Can your 4ohm cabs be daisy chained? In other words, do the cabs have an output as well as an input? If so, you can connect them in series: One cable out of the amp to one cab then, a second cable from that cab to the other. When speakers are connected in series, it increases the impedence. So, two 4ohm cabs daisy chained would create an 8ohm load. That would work with your amp, although you wouldn't be able to get the optimum power from the amp as you would with a matched 4ohm load.

yes it has two ports but at 300w i don't want to lose any power but thanks for the info. Maybe i'll just get a 4x10 because I bought a cab that i could afford at the time and it's a Seismic Audio 3x10 and that missing 10in doesn't give me the exact low end I want.
God bless you Norm!! You're so sick!! Hope one day I could be like you playing solo ;)
Hi! I just want to know what bass are you using, and the strings...
do you have to use the bi-amp output of can you run into any other cab with full range?
What does the 212/115 give you over 2 x 212's? I am currently undecided whether to get a second neo 212 or a neo 115 to go with my 700 rb.
daamn. this guy is.. AWESOME
IS that 2 x 4 x 10,s i would like to know what you all like most double 4 10 cabs or one 15 inch and 4 x 10,s or 2 x 15,s
I love that there is not one mention in the description of what equipment he's using besides the brand
I want to hear both simple stuff and the technical end so I can make sure it'll remain clear when I play faster. Is that so wrong?
My question is very straightforward, can a Gallien Krueger 1001RB Bass Amp Head drive a double GK 4x10 bass cabinet put together on top of each other? I will really appreciate your response. Thanks
If both cabs are 8 ohm then yes. It would be the same thing as running a single 4 ohm cab.
If the speakers are efficient, yes, one can achieve full tone at low input wattages. This would not be true if the cab has loose, inefficient speakers (many vintage cabs) which require more power to make them move and produce their full tone. This a pretty widely understood concept.
Don't listen to the haters man. Awesome demo! Great skills too!
Hai, can i use 410 and 115 with rb700?
Nice!
Can someone help me out, I just got back line 600 at 300wts 4ohms my question is if I am going to use two separate cabs can they be 4ohms each or do I need to use different homage when it comes to that. I have never used two cabs and am a drummer first so I never got to technical with amps
It explains it on the rear out puts of your GK head.
2023 and the 1001rb is still a standard
Can this be played through an 8 ohm cab?
+Devin Molina Yep! Gallien-Krueger make 8 ohm cabs too if you're wondering.
My gullien Kruger has a humming of and on can you help me
And it's also important to understand that people have different tastes. What appeals to you may be different than what appeals to me. It doesn't mean that one or the other doesn't "sound good", just different.
Hi! What type of amplifier does RB series heads have?
solid state
This video tells me nothing about the equipment, just about Norm.
Hi +mikeb56 & all- Thx for your comments; this wasn't intended to be a comprehensive demo (1 take, very quick shoot during visit to Sweetwater). For my full demos, pls go to: www.gallien-krueger.com/demos/
ikeb56
Is it me or is there a huge dent on the grill in the top cab?
Considering the type of mic, the compression of the video, and the speakers or headphones you're using are between you and this amps true sound, it's rather pointless making a video like this to illustrate the sound of a particular amp.
Incidentally, the intro music for this clip is called "Variations on the Seinfeld Theme."
Is this a Warwick bass?
wish he would have told us if that was 2 x 4x 10,s and if they are 4 ohm cabs we know its 800 watt cabs
i,m looking to buy 2 of them
Thank you, drums are alot simpler haha. That means i need new cabs!!
God bless
Charles
sounds great! and powerful. my band's style is mix of thrash/grindcore/melodic death metal? my set up- carvin 5 string with active pickups tuned down 1 whole step, into the gk backline 600 head, into 2 cabs. one gk goldseries 4x10 (painted black), the other gk backline series 4x10. this rig shakes the walls at my rehearsal studio. i have leaked through the "soundproof" recording room almost 100 ft. away onto a recording. oops!
MTD with GK is sweetness.
It is Tony Iommis brother who play bass.
The amp please!!! Don't mind about your way to play...
Oh Norm can play alright, he just dos'nt show his chops in this presentation, and if you ever meet him he's a real gentleman!
I wanna see backing tracks of classic songs and hear the bass tone.. thats all.. from the amp..
the sound is super quite while norm is playing the bass. I wish it was louder.
Are you related to John Myung?
GK amps are fuckin great for metal. i got ibanez bTb bass and man its heavy as shit
The most appropriate God damn it comment on you tube, ever! :)
LOOK AT ME!!! LOOK AT MEEEEE!!!!
No kidding. Thanks for telling me nothing, Norm haha.
Was hoping this would be an actual demo. Not about "this is what i like about GK and how i kiss their...." Audio levels for the little playing there was are to low to boot... No sale here
As for the cab, you misunderstand. I would never recomend driving a bass speaker to a mild breakup for the reason you state, as well as it sounding horrible. To give an exagerated example - imagine someone playing a coffee house and running through a 1000w 4x12 with the amp output at 1 or 2 to get an appropriate volume level. The speakers aren't even going to move and the tone will suffer. Cabs must be driven (not over-driven) at least to near half of power handling in order to sound their best
All you slap haters don't like funk I take it(you must as their one). I for one am a flying funeteer for life sir nose. Most bands tell their bass player stay there in the corner and play the tonic. Slapping and virtuosity on bass is revolutionary as the bass is essentially a mix between guitar and drums.Yes your role is supportive but not to be a mannequin who plays 3 notes a song. This cat plays very well, how could you hate on him unless your insecure in your ability. YA, Funketteer fa life.
The bass is a MTD. G.K. lost me as a customer when the did away with the RBS series of cabs. These were the cabs before they came out with their Backline series, Too bad.
Totally agree! Slapping is so over-used as to become tiring.
MTD bass
what an ignorant comment, why do you you think basses have 20 or 24 frets, obviously to put some use to it .
Mucho bla bla y poco testeo del cabezal.
I got to the 40 secs mark and shut this off. I want to hear bass playing in a review, not noodling. I think I'll go try a Mesa.
Ahh....more slapping...thanks?
I'm from outer space.
that bass amp is so expensive... i would better buy somethins cheaper..
its all about egos ...
Pas la peine de nous provoquer on se rend !
It would appear that you are in a glass house... and your hubris is showing.
You need to see Billy Sheehan play. You'll go home crying to your mommy.
What the definition of a really good bass player? One who knows how to slap, but doesn't..
je n'aime pas du tout le jeux du bassiste :(
Ridiculous noodler
let me play some gibberish tapping (that naive people believe they can replicate by simply buying the amp) and then babble on endlessly... then go buy this amp.
----
why do you use the bass like a guitar??
fuck.... I hate when bass players do tapping or play the bass as a guitar!
Tired of all these demos that just slap.
