Day in the Life in a Japanese Manga Artist Shared House

- Опубліковано 3 лют 2022
- A day in the life of a Japanese Mangaka aka Manga Creator living in shared house in Tokyo Japan. This is life in Tokyo and life in Japan as an aspiring manga artists living with other mangaka in the same home. Nobi, 25 years old lives in the outskirts of Tokyo. Now living in this unique shared house reserved for only aspiring Manga artists. He lives with 3 other mangaka under this special program called Tokiwaso which provides a living space in addition to support to help develop a manga artist’s career. We follow his daily routine from when he wakes up in the morning in his Japanese home, what his life is like working in Japan as manga artist as well as what he does at night living in Japan. As an aspiring manga artist, his daily schedule varies quite a bit as he has the freedom to dictate his working hours, whether it be spending all his waking moments developing his craft or taking it easy to follow other pursuits. At the end of the day, Nobi knows it’s his personal responsibility to guide his success in becoming a professional mangaka so he puts in the time everyday to create as many opportunities for himself as possible.

Please do Day in the life of a Japanese Martial Artist.
Please sub spanish the japanese home builder, toy maker and this, please and also great videos of the Day in the life.
I like this one I would love to see one about a farm veterinarian🥰🇯🇵.
Please make a video related to train drivers. I am super excited for that
eating healthy, getting out to socialize and get some fresh air, standing while working,
This dude is doing all the right things to avoid health issues common to manga artists
But is he gonna make the deadline?! lol his struggle feels so relatable
if he can do all that while making a tight deadline and keeping the story in tact, that's incredible.
@sylene Yup, the more traction they get the more pressure goes along with it, that's why most of them burn out; It's quite sad:(
Togashi could learn from this guy lol
@@steelyeyes9190 far too late my friend. 😭
This was really awesome to see a young but promising manga artist as we usually see well established people with careers. So it's nice to see what it may be like when you're just starting out in your career.
Glad you liked this peek into his life
@@PaolofromTOKYO is Nobi a halfu? His look is interesting
If he becomes a fully established Mangaka, I would like to read his first serialized work.
Pretty cool to see from that point of view.
@@PaolofromTOKYO cool
That’s so cool how the housemates pass around their manga and can get feedback from each other at the dinner table like that.
Yeah so cool
They shouldn't. The only one that should do that is the corresponding editor.
now i want to share a house with someone
@@Rukiman_no16they should! your editor won’t be the only other person to read your manga, ideally you’d want a ton of people to read it. so it’s good to have others input as well as your editor
@@peachii4894the editor is looking for a successful manga, not one they like. They want to sell, not to like it.
In fact, they will like it if it sells.
I don't create manga, but as another creative (writer), videos like these give me so many ideas for improving my productivity.
Yes, me too
This is probably my favourite series on UA-cam
Aha...me too...i love the series...waiting each day
Agreed. A lot of work goes into these videos.
Same. I look forward to it so much.
Ah neat. Fancy seeing you here

I can appreciate all the little ways he's taking care of his physical and mental health - it must help a great deal with such a stressful career!
He is in it for the long run, let’s go!!!
it's just a must on art careers
This really inspires me!!! I always hear of people starting as children, the fact that he started as an adult and got so far in 6 years is inspiring
that's very rare most don't start that young.
I dunno if anyone else noticed this but this guy is left handed. U rarely see any artists out there who r left handed. I'm so glad that he actually chose to show us his life as a mangaka.
Well yeah because only 10% of the population in the world is left-handed

We have to admire how cinematic Paolo's Day in the Life videos are---all of the different camera angles, rather than just following behind the guest, are so enjoyable to watch.
ohhh that is why it is so interesting
Imagine how annoying the shooting must be for the whole day
Report this bot.
The videos are so professionally done! Better than some reality shows. I appreciated the production value and the editing.
Yeah it looks cool.
Can't help but think it would be quite awkward to set up the angles lol.
You have to tell the guys to wait till you go outside and set the camera or set the camera and tell them to act normal or stop them from leaving till you set up the cam.
Obviously I am not blaming Paolo. I am pretty that doesn't take that much time at all and they probably know what they got into after agreeing to film from watching his other videos
I hope he makes it, looks like he's working hard and I loved the part where his passion for making manga got reignited after seeing his classmate get published.
his manga looked way too simple tho
@@nainoa2323 you must have a sad life
Where can i find his work?
@@nainoa2323 Hello there :) I saw that you seem disappointed but please understand, this is very hard work. Maybe you try it yourself and see. I illustrate my own series and sometimes less is more, because it's easy to get way too overwhelmed, when the storyline or the picture is very full or complicated structured. Simple is not bad in any way and also doesn't equal easy. Simplicity oftentimes brings the point across much better too. There are many people who enjoy simple things, when they want to be entertained, especially after a long day of stress.
@@soleil7259 akira toriyama always followed the philosophy of "less is more." And considering how successful he is. Safe to say that's true
Not only does this video introduce awesome artists, but they also give pretty great advice on background shot angles and story ideas. And it's cool to see a bit of the behind-the-scene of the people who give us such great entertainment.
Tokiwaso is a reference to a famous apartment building that housed legendary manga artists like Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori, Fujiko Fujio, Hideki Mizuno and many more. The building was demolished in 1982 but rebuilt in 2020 as a museum.
So it's like their A23 (the classroom a lot of american 2d animators went to college in). it's cool it was rebuilt into a museum you don't usually see that with apartment buildings.

These "Day in the Life" videos continuously level up. I appreciate how Paolo brings attention to details that might be taken for granted by Japanese people or simply missed or misunderstood by non-Japanese people, like flipping backpacks. His role as the mediator between Japanese people and Japanophiles is crucial to these, and although he makes it look easy, it requires a lot of experience and knowledge.
I was taught flipping my pack forwards decreases the chance of things inside being stolen. Seems like not a JP specific thing.
@@ratlinggull2223 Theft isn't a problem in Japan, the flipping is so you don't hit someone with your backpack when you move around.
@@Mwoods2272 From my comment, have you figured that I had been living in another place before moving to Japan yet?
What's a japanophile?
@@Ditto-. Someone who likes Japan. -phile as a suffix means someone who likes something, like cinephile, audiophile, etc.
This really reminds me of the first time I moved to Tokyo ! When I first lived in Tokyo I decided to stayed in a sharehouse in Ryogoku area instead of an apartment. It was the right choice ! I gained plenty of new friends in that sharehouse that were willing to help me settling down in a new city and I never felt lonely.
My room in that sharehouse looked exactly like Nobi's room, the only difference was that mine has a medium-size fridge. So thank ypu for this video !!
I lived in a shared living space like this while I was in college! It's super super helpful and uplifting so it's cool to see other countries doing the same!
Paolo's ability to create a compelling story is just amazing. I think he's one of the most entertaining channel in UA-cam right now!
hey mate are you from arizona
Hearing that this artist took a break after university because of worry re: his skill level was actually really inspiring as an independent artist myself here in the States.
A wonderful episode!
What an amazing program. Its so good they have such support for up and coming mangaka. 👏
Makes you appreciate the time and effort mangakas like oda put into releasing full manga chapters weekly or biweekly or even monthly. It's crazy stuff man 🙏🏾
I find the Day in the Life series most interesting. It’s like getting to test out a job industry in a single video. Randomly, I wonder if I’m the only one to notice that the manga artist in this video has such unique tan lines on his feet. It’s cool! Wild how he can draw at such a professional level after only starting to draw six years ago instead of drawing from a young age. Nice video!
This was great! I love seeing manga artists at work. It would be awesome to see an episode about an animator someday.
Great work! 👍
I like how he decided to go for a walk or just to get outside in general to refocus. I like getting a glimpse into the tools and tablets he uses to make his manga. I enjoyed seeing how he spent his day and how he worked. I never thought there would be a situation like that where you can live in a shared house with other Manga artists, so cool.
We really hope he and his team's work would able to explode into popularity! The Manga industry is so convuluted and messed up but I know these guys can make it. Salamat Paolo for giving a glimpse of their daily lives wih us
Why is it convoluted and messed up if you don't mind me asking?
The western comics industry is more messed up right now. All are going down the drain currently, and the established comic makers left DC and Marvel to smaller companies because of the toxicity of the work environment within DC and Marvel
@@bael6472 Exactly. I'm from the US and I have my own website to put my work on, because you can't trust any of these comic companies, they're either very shady or not liberal at all when it comes to the individual artist.
Western comics even becoming more woke lately...sacrifice characters for wokeness. Letting minorities from twitter affect their industry. Japan would follow if this continues.
@@kawaiipotatoes7888 eh. You could argue that, but reality is that big western corporations have deemed the comic media a high risk low reward investment and will let it die sooner or later. "Being woke" has very little to do with this reality, the decline started since the 2000's. I would argue that the lack of a strong "cash culture" (unlike japan) has done more damage to new artists since we are less likely to buy physical copies or merch.
I like Nobi’s art style, will definitely try reading his manga and maybe buy some copies if I like it and becomes available in my country❤️
Did he create any other manga?
Its online first only probably
This is so good , the place and the way they works so nicely is so cool , really amazing , would like to see more of the manga artists

As someone who recently got hooked into the world of Manga, it’s cool to see how the artists work. I crack under the pressure of deadlines, but these mangaka handle them like champs. Whether if they’re on time or behind.
My respect for them definitely increased!
Handle like champs? Not really.
Like Nobi said, Mangaka lifestyle is very unhealthy and long hours and low pay usually. Even Mangaka like oda of one piece fame got sick from overworking himself. Such lifestyle is not healthy and in the long run can be very damaging to not just your body but also mind.. Especislly if you're not superfamous and rich
/talented like oda. For every Oda, there's probably tens or even hundreds of thousands of low paid assistants and unknown and unpaid or low paid aspiring mangaka like Nobi. Just being mangaka is hard enough and u healthy enough on the body, but they even need to get a second job to support their passion of being a mangaka, which adds even more stress and takes away even more time from your deadline which is already hard to meet for many published mangakas of even well known series, even with lots of assistants helping full time.
@@ex0duzz Isn't the bad distribution of profits the source of the problems related with the profession? (well actually that can be said with any job...) even if the work of the artist becomes a hit, most of the profits go to the publisher rather than the creator, the same applies to anime adaptations, wasn't there the new that the autor of Demon Slayer only received a small part of the revenues of the movie despite the success?
Manga is for incels produced by incels
@@BPchadlite said by incels
@@ex0duzz okay so how does that long ass essay prove that they are not handling it like a champ? Infact you just proved how difficult their job is and the fact that they can still do it means they are even more of a champ :/ smh

For some reason, Paolo walking around exploring the shared house like that made me think of the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. “I wonder if anyone’s in this room. I’ll go in and check.” Or, “Oh, that gyudon smells delicious. Nobody would mind if I just took one little bite…”
He’d better not. Hungry manga artists can be aggressive.

The Day in the Life format is now very popular on UA-cam, but no one does it like Paolo.
Thinking about all the work that goes into this in terms of locating a person good for the video, and trying to get them to do as many entertaining things as possible is just insane. I like that technique Nobi was using to come up with plot ideas, by mixing and matching random words and concepts. You could get some crazy stories that way!
Funny, I try doing that for my own stories, but it never really works out. Although if you're a writer, you try many techniques to come up with something. My go-to is my favorite manga, and use their elements as a reference.

It'd be funny to see some bloopers of all those B-roll shots where people need to walk past the camera :D
PS: How warm is the weather Japan right now for Nobi to be wearing sandals?? :D
he should do behind the scenes at the end of the videos.
well the alternative is working yourself to death for a job you don't like so might as well be poor and happy

wow such a busy schedule! He is so determined! I sincerely hope his manga will be a success!
love this series! It would be great to have longer videos!
Sabía que no podía ser el único que a veces dibuja de pie.
Me alegra que veas estos videos, Dreamaru. Saludos desde Nueva York!
dreamauuuuuuuuuuuuu no pense encontrarte aqui jajaaja
Artists in Japan really do have an impact. Their dedication and workflow is just so inspiring for other artists around the world >.
Would love to get a follow up on Nobi's story. Did he make his deadline? What's next for him? It's amazing to watch all of your 'Day in the Life' video's Paolo. I look forward to each new one and you never disappoint. I'd love to see one with someone new to Japan, living there - what they have had to overcome and what they have discovered. It would be an excellent way to live vicariously since I doubt I'll ever get to see Japan and experience it myself. Please keep making these wonderful video's - I can't express how much I enjoy them! Thanks for all your hard work!
as someone who writes stories as a hobby (mainly one-shot romance stories), i understood exactly what he meant by not liking one thing and having to change previous things he wrote/drew, then having to change the rest when it doesn’t make sense and doing that over and over again lol. it makes me procrastinate
do you post your stories?
@@louisasnow9314
i haven’t posted any of my stories recently, but i have a few (extremely cringey) stories that i wrote when i was in middle school that are published on wattpad
As someone who's 25 and really want to learn to draw, I've been debating whether I should even begin learning this late in life. But seeing Nobi who started 6 years ago gave me confidence that it's not too late.
ありがとう、ノビーさん
dude, im 30 and i began learning to draw a year ago, and ive actually surprisingly improved a little. You can learn to draw at any age , it just takes practice.
Hey, I started to draw with 24 and 8 years later I'm a full time artist and do this for a living. Many of my colleagues started at a similar age. 25 definitely isn’t too late, no matter what your art goals are. :)
@@ElbenherzArt Exactly. I only recently (for a few years now) took drawing seriously and now have my own website where I put my works on.
Becoming a full-time artist is something I'm working on :)
It's never too late to learn something new! It doesn't matter if you're 25 or 46. Don't give up on doing something you're interesting about, I'm sure you can be a great artist
@@ElbenherzArt that’s so inspiring! I was 26 when i started learning how to draw and i always regretted not starting when i was younger
I always love how these videos turn out. Straight up TV show level production!
More Mangaka videos pretty please! You're so amazing at making these videos!!!
as a struggling manga artist in the US i really appreciate this video because man planning and drawing my OC characters is so freaking hard but rewarding lol
Hey Paolo, just wanted to say
I love these video series so much
Really gives a deeper look at the people living in Japan
Please never stop being passionate about making these videos
They really make my day!
Finally a manga artist interview where the mangaka actually looks lively and has nice energy when answering questions. Nice interview as well🔥
I love this video! So inspirational and motivating!
Really love to watch your content dude
The fact that we get free 'A day in the life of a Japanese' videos on UA-cam by Paolo is truly a gift. 👍👍👍
This is an amazing video! Being able to see someone working that hard to do the thing he loves is awesome
I'm an artist from India too producing a webcomic in manga style. I can really tell it's a very very tough path to pursue and the hours are long but really hope manga gets in the eyes of the masses 🤞
Where can I see ur work
@@me6240 nowhere he's capping
Awesome, I also love the music in the soundtrack of Tenchu 1.
As a 2D Animator, I love to see how an animation studio in Japan works. Just loved the manga Comics as well. Please more on the line like this
Hi Paolo. I was so excited to see another “ Day in the Life” video. No one can do them like you. I enjoy watching all of your videos, especially the other channel with your cute little family 🥰
Jobs will pay your bills, business will make you rich but investment makes and keep you wealthy!
Last year, I was working full time, budgeting groceries, unable to afford date nights, and missing time with my kids. Now I learned how to make money online. Now am a SAHM, homeschooling, and making profits every week.
This video got me hooked, and now I’m determined to become a billionaire in just two years! 💪💰
That's great! I'm motivated too! How can we achieve this challenge?
No specific one really, because there are lots of investment plans and strategies littered all over the internet today, for instance, investments like real estates, gold, drop shipping crypto currency and lots more
I've heard alot about crypto currency investments and how effective it can grow your income! Any recommendations on a guide?
Would love to see more episodes like this! Very inspiring
It was so nice being able to see a peek in an aspiring manga artist’s life. Wish him best of luck!
Always love to see a new day in a life, and this one is about manga artist too. Always feel like this is an under-appreciated profession! Will enjoy this one
Thank you so much for this series
And here people telling me being a mangaka is an easy job, you just have to stay home, eat, draw and done..
They don't even know how much stress, hard works and dedication to make 1 chapter for the stories. Not to mention the deadline too, especially for a solo mangaka..
This man teach many thing in this video, thank you so much!
I don't think I've ever seen or heard anyone claiming that a mangaka is an easy job.
@@DGP406 well.. I been told by many peoples in my society like that..
Although now Anime and mangaka are being accepted in my country society now, 15 years ago anime or manga related are not as hype as now..
If anyone ever say they want to be a mangaka, the elder will say like that..
Some elder were nice but some still say the same words..
