      Agreed. Even if the vehicle won’t let you move the shifter without the key on, there’s always a fail safe way of putting the trans in neutral if the battery is dead or something else like this happened. It would’ve came up a lot easier if they had done that.

    The tow driver left me with more questions than answers. I assume he extended his bed out for more weight over the rear tires but why not use your winch? He almost rammed that Mercedes into the dock. Once it was out of the water why not try to put it in neutral? Probably had an electronic ebrake maybe even an electronic gear shift? Regardless it looked like his first day on the job, at least the new camera lady nailed it 👍

    • @nospoon4799
      @nospoon4799 2 роки тому +1

      Probably an electronic parking brake on a modern Mercedes. Also looked like it was in gear, and had four or five tons of water in it.

    • @conanruisi
      @conanruisi 2 роки тому +3

      So to answer your questions:
      1. The bed is down so that the cable doesn’t put tension against the edge of the bed, that could cause it to snap
      2. He likely did use the winch, the issue is if the car is in park you could just burn out your winch or your hydraulic pump, as opposed to putting the mechanical brake on the winch and yanking it out with truck power, both methods work but since the car is totaled it doesn’t matter if he breaks it or not.
      3: there was no reason to not put it in neutral, there are two possibilities, either the tow driver is an idiot, or the Mercedes wouldn’t shift out of park after being submerged for so long, it’s about a 50/50 chance of either.
      I’m just shocked that park in Mercedes language means a gear which makes the front and rear wheels turn opposite directions.
      Sure Mercedes that sounds like it’ll last… 🙄🙄

Tires lose an extreme amount of traction when wet, and in combination with the algae and oil and whatnot from all the boats the ramp is extremely slippery. All you would need is a car on the flat dry pavement, literally a damn Camry would've been able to pull that SUV back out, and a rope to tie the two. All it takes is patience. Emergency brake wasn't on, the car was in park. If the brake was on, the rear wheel wouldn't move at all. It was moving backwards because the wheel on the opposite side was getting more grip, and therefore rotating the differential with the driveshaft locked (in park) which turned that wheel the opposite direction.

    I'm from Indiana and there's not a lot of scuba divers we know of that wanna tow. So to have a diver come out it's a automatic $1000.00 to have a diver come out and that's only for 1 hour. Every hour after is 500. That's on top of the tow/recovery.

    I sank my 79 ford truck in the lake in February one time. The emergency brake didn’t work an it was a three speed on the column. It popped out of gear when I was just about to load my boat on the trailer. I almost got hyperthermia diving down to hook a chain on it.

    “Das Boot” - U-GLA250- (The MB) was just following the the sign: “Move your vessels back”....after all German subs at one time were quite good. Mercedes/MTU a part of Daimler AG makes the German U-Boot engines. It was originally founded by Maybach. So that engine should be good after the oil is changed. For the rest of the vehicle, I hope that bought the rustproofing package from the “stealer”. Auf Wiedersehen!

    Question. I have never faced the stress of a public boat ramp though I did learn with jet skis on a private ramp how to line up. And I had driven trailers before but my question is would the jet ski have been able to push at all. When the others were also trying to pull. Just curious. Thx for answers.
