I think we have been down this road a bit together. Our palates differ a bit when it comes to rye, but I will say, these bottles are worth some time. Cheers!
RayK All you need to do is pick up Barrell Rye 13/14 year Canadian (Alberta) Rye store picks throughout the US. Some of them exceed hazmat ABV. @@peterwhite507 Thank you for the recommendations! It must be serendipity as I've been looking online at a Barrell Canadian Rye Single Barrel Pick from my local Total Wine. I guess I need to take the plunge now. And I'm going to be looking for the other ones you mention as well. Happy Holidays and Cheers!
Hmm... THREE bottles on the table, eh. Should we worry? 🤔 This was a fun review. Can't get any of these here at the moment, sadly. I'd looked at the AB Premium CS early this year, should have picked it up at the time. Too many whiskyTube videos coming out at the moment to keep up! I've had to pare it down to a few favourites. Glad you're one of them! All the best, Jon! Marian 🇨🇦
Edition 3 was available in Illinois and Mass. through Binnys last year. No mention from Corby's on an edition 4. Just the new 48% double barreled Dark Oak.
@@WhiskyNeighbour That seems to be the consensus. Ontario has yet to release Dark Oak and there are mixed reviews of it. Of course being Lot 40 everyone will get a bottle and come to their own conclusions. Cheers and Merry Christmas
@@WhiskyNeighbour hope you can find one. I would love to hear you contrast and compare it to batch one because I didn’t get that batch. Thanks for your videos. I appreciate your channel because of all of the Canadian whisky you showcase. I find most other whisky youtubers neglect or disregard Canadian whisky. Keep Up the good work and showing off the great products coming from Canada.
I stumbled across your channel when looking for a review on the Aberlour 12. You have earned a new sub sir! The laid back, relaxed way you present these videos makes me feel like I'm listening to a mate. Cheers!
Can't believe we only stumbled across this now. It's an honour to be mentioned in the same breath as those two titans of the whisky world. Really appreciate your honest, unvarnished opinion on the spirit. The grassiness is a marker of youth, which mellows with time in oak - but it's also ultimately the real flavour of the rye. This one ended up winning Best New Whisky in Canada at the Canadian Whisky Awards, and is long, long gone. We do have a 5.5 year cask strength rye out right now that you might enjoy though.
Well, this is going back a bit! Glad you found it, and so thankful for this release. It was a cracker for it's age for sure! Thanks again for creating quality releases!
Only know Lot 40 out of these, but really enjoyed the review. Just curious, but if you were relaxing and drinking the Last Straw, would you add water or drink it at cask strength? Have a great weekend Jon 🥃🥃
Great question. I enjoy a bit of water or over ice for both Lot 40 and AP caskstrength. However, water seems to amplify the herbal or grass notes even more with the Last Straw, so I have taken to just very small, slow sips when enjoying!
I also got one of those 48 bottles of Last Straw. So of the 48 bottles I know of 3 that made it to Alberta. The 43% Rye is a distillery release only as well, may swing by and get 1. This 11 year Shelter Point release #2 is at Kensington Market www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/171915/shelter-point-2009
Awesome! Have you had a chance to try it? What are your thoughts? Thanks for the link, now I have another bottle to hunt down! Have a great Christmas break!
@@WhiskyNeighbour The 11 year has not arrived. I have the 9 year which is excellent. The 11 year is noticeably darker as the second barrel was heavier charred for the 6 years aging on the Island. I have not tried the Last Straw Cask strength yet. Too many open bottles
I thought of you as a bourbon man first, but it seems you've shown your hand recently and turns out you need the rye, no? Great three-way comparison! Cheers!
Tough to nail down a favorite style. Strong Bourbon? Spicy Rye? All good. I may prefer Rye by just a bit, but the spectrum is wider. Bourbon seems more consistent for me.
Cheers, Jon!
Thanks!
That is a tough line up! Very inspiring. I think I need to revisit my rye whiskies tonight :)

Some amazing Canadian ryes! Need this pandemic to end so I can get up to Canada to try some higher-end Canadian ryes! Cheers!
Yes! And Yes! I wish these were more readily available around the world. Take Care.

I got a bottle of the second release of Alberta Premium CS a couple weeks ago. $60 in BC. It sold out first morning it was in stock. Fantastic whisky.
So glad you could grab a bottle. i haven't had the second release yet, but I'm sure it's amazing. Cheers!
